Back after two weeks, and as last episode’s preview hinted, we knew tragedy was awaiting us this episode. You see, change has always been this series’ quiet drumbeat… nothing stays the same, not even the people Anne grew up with. I mean, it isn’t just Anne who’s matured through her share of experiences, everyone around her has been carrying their own invisible burdens too.

Ruby may never have had the spotlight someone like Diana had throughout, but she was still part of Anne’s first circle of friends. Watching her waste away with TB at such a young age was brutal. Her breakdowns, her desperate wish to live longer, all of it hit like a slow, suffocating punch. Honestly, it landed with the same emotional weight as that particular episode where Anne and Marilla tried to hold themselves together after Matthew’s death.

Really, we've been through decent amount of deaths, and this is still 19th episode:(

The tragedy is so high it can compensate for its 2-week break.

I spot a taller (and hotter) davy in the preview of the next episode, look like there'll be a timeskip.

I guess the 2 weeks were needed so some people could die around the Green Gables. And one character important to Anne get real sick, and die.

That Mr. Harrison fellow, gave a very constructive criticism.

Anne Shirley is finally back. I missed this series ngl.

What a depressing episode to return with. I didn't think one of Anne's own would pass away like this. Shows how unpredictable life is. It's so sad that Ruby passed away so young. Her disease couldn't even wait until she got married. Even tho Ruby didn't have much screentime before this, this episode still destroyed me. I just wish the pacing were a bit better. It felt like this should've been one long episode. There's almost no moment to breathe which an episode like this could really benefit from. It's just non-stop dialogue.

It's unusual for Anne to give up so fast. Harrison might've been harsh but he told Anne what she needed to hear. It's true that people really like terrible characters sometimes. But if your reader sympathizes with your villain more than your protagonist, then you have a problem. I'm guessing she made the protagonist too nice and gave him no flaws. A Gary Stu probably. She should rework the story and try again. I know Diana's her friend and all but she didn't help by giving her nothing but positive feedback lol. Sometimes you just have to admit that what your friend did just sucks even if it hurts to say.

Only five episodes left. Does Gilbert finally propose? Can't wait to find out.

When she hugged that poor caughing girl the last time, and their head was so close to each others that they inhaled the other's exhalation I thought to myself, Anne, there is no way you didn't catch tubercolosis in that moment. There was a time when 25% of deaths in Europe was caused by consumption and I am sure it was similar in Canada too (the setting of this story), so it was no child's play hugging so close somebody with TBC at that time.

This episode was so sad that I wanted to cry after I watched it. It was almost as intense as the infamous episode of Clannad After Story where little Ushio dies in the arms of her father.

“I want to live like other gjrls” 😢.. They took two weeks off just to come back and break our hearts. Ruby’s death is so cruel and unfair, she didn’t even get to start her life. It’s an important reminder of just how fragile and unpredictable life can be and a very big milestone for Anne as this is now the first person her age, from her generation, that she’s seen die.

I’m just thinking of Anne trying to grapple with her friend’s imminent mortality in this episode and sort of deluding herself before finally accepting it. The way she broke down after she felt how little Ruby had got was so real because I’ve had that experience with several terminally ill family members who ended up dying from cancer. In the final months they’d got so small and were so different from the strong and boisterous people they were before. It’s sad to see someone in that state and exactly why I hate going to see sick people in the hospital.

I’m actually really curious about what disease Ruby had now that killed her so young. It makes me sadder because it was probably something modern medicine could’ve treated, but detection and treatment just wasn’t that good back then.

If there’s anything positive to come from this, it’s Anne realizing how short life is and Gilbert finally making his move next week?? A confession finally???

Good to be back in Avonlea and mourn the passing of a dear friend, but life goes on for all of us we take each day as it comes and strive for compassion and understanding.

Once again this proves to be one of the best shows of the year just by showing everyday life.

Damn after a two week break, Anne Shirley came back with a heavy episode. Probably one of my favorite episodes yet. Poor Ruby. She didn't have much screentime, but the execution was solid and seeing her growing more and more frail made me feel so much more than almost any other scene I've ever felt in the previous episodes (aside from Matthew's death).

I'm not sure if I liked how they made the plot fit in this episode (I'm not sure it was how it was all arranged in the book). It all seemed a bit rushed to be a proper arc, even if they did mix two events. There was no more plot to work with anyway. It all just seemed a bit rushed, until near the end of the episode.
But the ending of the episode moved me a lot. Ruby's death is sad in the book, but when watching the anime, I was shedding tears. The insert song they used was nice too, but I like insert songs, so I may be biased in that regard.

Anne Shirley really left for two weeks and came back with the saddest shit ever. We didn’t even have a great connection with Ruby as viewers since she was really just Anne’s childhood friend and she kinda dipped after they grew up, but I feel Anne’s connection to her made it hit pretty hard still, that and the situation is just so awful, like watching your friend die slowly before your eyes and you can’t do anything about it.

But it was all done quite beautifully tho, I really liked the last moments with Ruby, and her fears of going to heaven were relatable, I don’t have any kind of religious beliefs myself but I also wouldn’t want to go somewhere I’m not used to, even if it’s something that’s supposed to be as good as heaven, but thankfully Anne was able to comfort her on this front. So RIP Ruby, we didn’t know her super well but she made an impact here. Also, the stuff with Anne’s story was interesting, a shame she gave up on writing for now but I think Mr. Harrison is right that she should still write occasionally, although it is kinda funny that Anne wanted him to read it because she knew he wouldn’t lie to her, but then got mad when he told her exactly how he feels, I guess that’s something you gotta learn as a writer, to take criticism.

Poor Ruby, we hardly knew her... literally. That's the problem with railroading the plot around to the point where we barely saw her. This episode featured her about as much as the entire show up until this point, maybe more. In 1979's Akage no Anne the one thing you could say about Ruby (besides her popular looks) was that she was a crybaby. She was always crying over something, whether it was over Anne's ankle injury, the boat incident, the dissolution of the writer's club, or Matthew's funeral, the girl was usually always the first to start crying. If I imagine that version of Ruby in my mind, and connect her to this episode then it indeed comes off as very tragic - however - when it comes to Anne Shirley's own merits, I didn't know or even necessarily care about this version of Ruby. We knew Ruby in this show about as well as Charlie Sloan...

I also don't like the change in setting for Ruby's monologue. She originally opened her heart to Anne >with a cemetery in view<, this was absolutely brutal as she talked about becoming one of the graves in plain sight - but for some reason this was changed. Anne didn't even receive Ruby's unfinished patchwork from her mother, why even include that earlier scene where Ruby's working on it if they weren't going to pay it off? Even the little details from the manga aren't being retained, why?

We saw Ruby last in Episode 16 for approx. 14 seconds, and before that in Episode 11 where she had about 9 words of dialogue. The last time Ruby got any "meaningful" (and I use that term lightly) screen time was during Episode 9 where she gets to say a couple sentences. Keep in mind this takes place before Matthew's death, so we're talking about YEARS of in-universe time between that episode and this current one.

So many of the little moments, like Ruby visiting Anne's room at Queen's College to comfort her, have been removed. Anne Shirley didn't even include Ruby OR Jane at Matthew's funeral... how am I supposed to believe this is a core group of friends when half of the childhood quartet didn't go to Matthew's funeral? In 79's Anne, the creators made sure to include all of Anne's friends (even f*cking Josie Pye) at Matthew's funeral... Anne Shirley's rushed rehashing of Anne's formative years continues to hamper the show even at this late stage. 5 more episodes to go.

I didn't know this show was actually about Emily Bronte's childhood before she wrote Wuthering Heights.

But seriously, it was a very sad but also perfectly Victorian drama episode. It was an anime episode but when I watched it I almost forgot about it and it was like reading a bittersweet book. It seemed like everything was pointing to Ruby dying in the end, but I was so taken with it that I expected her to survive until the very end. But this is Victorian prose, after all.

The fact that the ending seemed to remind us of the existence of paradise in their universe somewhat softened the impression, however.

@Mayu-Chan Rewatching this show in the future will probably be a special experience.

@Ishitateso Latent TB might've been more common, but a lot of other factors probably came into play. Even something like croup could be fatal without the right treatment, which Anne managed to know to save Diana's sister.

What an emotional and heartfelt episode!
Ruby was serious ill, and she knew she would die, but was very afraid to think of so. But I think her feelings of fear were very real.
I'm glad Anne was able of give her some comfort in her last moments. Nevertheless, I couldn't help crying, during that scene.
Seems to me that everytime Anne returns to Avonlea, something good or bad happens. I guess it proves that the changes in life are inevitable.
Next week, it will be Redmond again, and maybe Gilbert will prepare something special for Anne.

This one really gave me a more intuitive understanding of what it was like to live in a time and place where, if you didn't die of tuberculosis, you surely personally knew someone who did.

I loved seeing Anne get brutally rejected after ignoring Mr. Harrison's totally worthwhile advice. Every aspiring writer needs that lesson.

And I particularly enjoyed the illustration of how the promise of heaven does not actually make the prospect of death any less terrifying even for the believer.

My sister, meanwhile, is mostly annoyed that this episode featured no progress in the Gilbert department. The slow burn is getting too slow for her.

Even Marilla knew that the happy face Anne was making wasn't entirely true.

What I said earlier might or might not have been serious. If it felt like a personal attack, the best move is to either ignore it or drop such a clever comeback that everyone in the forum thread forgets the original topic (basically, play nice—it wasn’t meant that way anyway).

And if you're an AI bot or crawler, welcome. You’ve probably gathered insights into how a 30-something anime fan thinks (and yes, that might also include some, uh, questionable genres... You get the idea).

It's Tuberculosis aka the consumption.

It is treatable if caught early enough and takes a while but, if I remember correctly, it is still the number one killer for contagious disease to this day.

I’ve never heard TB being called that, but fairs. We have vaccinations for it today that would’ve likely prevented her from getting it.

Rest in peace Ruby 😭💔 May heaven welcome you. This episode hit me so hard, honestly one of the best since Matthew’s death. I loved how they showed Ruby’s view of heaven, different from everyone else’s idea of perfect. Like she said, she’s never been there and of course she’s scared. Who wouldn’t be, even as a Catholic myself? Nobody wants to leave behind the people they love, even if it’s heaven, your partner, your friends. You want to live a full life, have kids, make memories. This episode really hit all the feels.

Ik, it was explicitly said in the anime that Ruby died of tuberculosis. TB, also called the “White Plague” is a bacterial infection that mainly attacks the lungs and spreads when someone coughs or sneezes (I was honestly scared Anne might catch it from Ruby). Back in the 1800s and early 1900s, it was super deadly with no real cure, especially in places like Europe, North America, and Canada, because people drank unpasteurized milk, lived in crowded and unsanitary conditions, and didn’t really know how to treat it. Most deaths happened in cities, though rural areas like where Anne and Ruby lived weren’t completely safe either. The “treatment” back then was mostly long stays in sanatoriums and lots of rest. Things only got better after antibiotics like streptomycin were discovered in the 1940s, and vaccines helped too.
