What anime do you think had incredible atmospheres?
___________________

Personally, I think both Texhnolyze and .hack//Sign we’re perfect in this department.

Nothing can beat Texhnolyze in how well it crafted this miserable, nihilistic, downright oppressive mood. I felt sick to my stomach by the end, sheerly because the atmosphere was so suffocating.

//Sign felt like you were experiencing the world of an early 2000’s mmo, embodied by this nostalgic and adventurous feeling. I remember playing games like Ryzom when I was young, being enthralled in its world, whilst using my imagination to fix all the technical limitations and the god awful game designs. Watching //Sign years later felt like I was a kid again, engrossed in this magical fantasy world inhabited by other players.

Aria's ability to create a soothing, tranquil experience is unrivaled. It's soundtrack can set the mood perfectly and the design for Neo Venezia can make you feel at ease

Revue Starlight. Basically visually ambitious and thematically majestic that both get me hyped and drowned in a sea of feels in every major event.

Shinsekai Yori, Higurashi no naku koro ni (Deen), Nagi no Asu kara.

Deen's Higurashi does an excellent job at creating an eerie and off/creepy atmosphere, especially in the early episodes and the buildups before the gore takes over in each arc.

I can't really describe why I chose Shinsekai Yori & Nagi no Asu kara too, but they immediatly came to mind when I read your question ^^'

Mushishi and Non non Biyori

Both anime nailed the setting and the atmosphere... once you start watching, everything around you ceases to exist

I didn’t think about this but you’re totally right. I’ve only seen season 1 so far but from what I remember it has this incredibly peaceful aura.

Hakumei and Mikochi, as soon as the episode starts, I get sucked in their daily lives for 20 minutes.

Grimgar, I wish more isekai took such a slow approach to their world and characters, and the backgrounds man.

Mushishi, man, watching just one episode a day is enough to make your day so much better, Ginko's personality and adventures just hit differently.

I think Steins;Gate's really nailed its atmosphere. I love its use of color and sound to convey an oppressive feeling, in spite of the settings just being the present.

Mushishi has the perfect atmosphere. Its so quiet, the colors are muted, the characters are always very softspoken, the enviornments are quiet, etc. It creates a mysterious, yet calm world. It feels like anything could happen each episode, Its really such a joy to watch. I should really watch more of it. I only saw one season.

Whilst I personally did find it interesting I will admit the pacing was garbage. The last 3 episodes were especially horrific, and it ended on one of the most bullshit uses of deus ex machina.

This this this. I will stream Aria’s soundtrack while I work because it brings my mind back to the series and it’s so calming. There’s a reason Aria is the premier “iyashikei” (healing) series, it was just perfectly executed.

One Piece for the whole infinite world building it has. It feels real.

Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin. It's just so serious with its theme that it nailed the right atmosphere for me.

Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou. It reminds me of the fun times I had with high school. It had this nostalgic school atmosphere that is just so fun.

And this is not an anime but Saya no Uta has this unique and disturbing atmosphere. It's a great VN, I recommend for anyone to read it cause it's a short read.

I wasted all my time in rewatching to the point of my rewatch total is higher than my overall anime total lmao

I don't think I've seen a steampunk anime nailing that victorian atmosphere as well as Last Exile did.
Who are you and why do you show your hostility towards a complete stranger whom you've not once spoken with before. Are you seriously asking to get blocked? Well, if that's what your intent is; to tempt me into throwing hands with someone as lowly and insignificant as you, then i may grant your wish provided you articulate yourself a bit better when trying to spite a person of my wavelength.

Yuru Camp can physically make you feel warm and cozy with its unbelievable amount of wholesomeness and visual comf.

I wanna be the true savior,
the one with a terrible demise.

Most things Yasuyuki Ueda was involved in: Haibane Renmei, Serial Experiments Lain, Shigurui, Texhnolyze, Ergo Proxy. Special shoutout to NieA Under 7 which is completely overlooked but any bit as good as the ones mentioned before. Want a hidden gem among hidden gems? Watch it :)

The first anime i thought of was MUSHISHI, for real, the director did such a great work with the setting, feels mysterious, uncertain, melancholic in a way yet calm .... oh the music uffffff , the ost nailed it .

Steins gate , that anime totally got the scifi vibes

Monster, thats the best seinen hands down, the way you feel scary of johan is just amazing, i never felt so uncomfortable before with a human like johan, you can understand right away why the anime is called monster. Is a slow burn tho, i seen people call it boring, ewww they dont know what they miss

Maybe not that much but Madoka magica did the trick too, you feel miserable for the poor kids lifes

Anime actually gave a desolate melancholic atmosphere with a lot of mystery of what happened to everyone

Samurai Champloo
The atmosphere of samurai and the Japan back then is perfect alongwith some additions of hip-hop jazz music

Death Parade
A bar where people play their last game and get judged, a very interesting take on purgatory.

Mahoutsukai no Yome: its animation and soundtrack are so incredible that they can give you a signal when something bad is going to happen, as if the same atmosphere had a dark background that in the end explodes into a majestic or murky event.

Kara no Kyoukai is a series that struck me most for its strange atmosphere, as its melancholic soundtrack and dim visuals as well as its themes of philosophy are what make me keep thinking about it.

Mushishi, Mononoke, and natsume yuujincho are the first anime that come to mind when I think of atmosphere and aesthetic. I also really like Mugen no Juunin: immortal a lot, which I am currently watching. I've noticed it gets a lot of flack though, but I think the aesthetic is really pleasing.
