Users of Niconico Douga will launch an artificial satellite from Nevada, US on September 19th. The satellite carries a movable figure of Hachune Miku (a derivative character of VOCALOID Hatsune Miku). The project involves Nojiri Housuke (the novel author of "Rocket Girls").

Social Media Satellite Development Project (SOMESTAT)

The major object of the project is to demonstrate that Hachune Miku can swing a green onion (leek) at zero gravity. Matsumoto Leiji gave a supporting message to the project.

Just in case anyone is worried that Niconico users have suddenly developed the ability to place objects into earth orbit, that's not precisely what's going on here. It's part of an annual amateur rocketry exhibition where they reserve airspace in Nevada each year. None of these rockets are going to pass the Kármán line or most other arbitrary lines that define space, although our virtual idol will have some serious free fall time to swing her leek in zero G to complete her science mission. I'm guessing from the looks of that rocket, somewhere in the 10-15k feet range is reasonable.

By the way, she's not the only one getting launched, and this little fellow has truly earned his ride.

note on news reporting:
You forgot to link to some explanation of what a vocaloid actually is....

comment on news:
My first impression to this was amazement.
I have played with the vocaloid 2 program, and the mikumiku dance program, I even subscribed to tripshots' youtube channel, and look forward to hearing tripshots' album one day, I've seen hatsune hentai and even loli hentai, but this, this news of sending 'a derivative' of her into space... is simply too big... but only because as far as I can tell it serves little to no function, this satellite... I would much prefer an actually useful thing to be sent up into space.... maybe something like a huge parabolic mirror (as seen in futerama) with a projector somewhere on earth projecting hatsune mikus' nico nico douga videos on the mirror...

reply to (quoted) comment by fai:
humanity serves little purpose in the evolution of this planet, its true, we were just an experiment by evolution, never supposed to unlock mathematical truths about the universe, and this planet being able to even support life as we know it, was able to do so against unfavourable odds...

so yeah... if we are to be wiped out by aliens, they too would be, 'evolutionary improbabilities' I would imagine the more rational of them would more likely be more alike to brethren to us, as opposed to our destroyers...

Ah. Thanks for the clarification, my brain was having some trouble connecting the mental pictures of a multi-ton rocket to a Miku figurine -.-

Still 10-15k feet's pretty impressive, not to mention an interesting experiment :P

Dude any chances of diplomatic relations with aliens have been destroyed by sending that...thing into space.

Even the hippie aliens will want to slaughter us for creating and launching such horrors.
