Feels like a 1980s or 90s anime lost in the 2020s and 21st century. But also somehow not and settled exactly where it means to be...

The fact that it's based on a 2019 manga rather than reviving of an older property is what impressed and caught my attention. Ah, so they're still writing and drawing good solid things like this at least as far into the future and as recently as 2019. We don't have to go back to 1992 for it. That's reassuring.

Make no mistake - It could still - and at any point - turn out to be just mediocre and passable or even abysmal and a huge trainwreck, but more than most based off of the first episode, all indications are leaning toward potential greatness for this one. It's nice to only know a few vague disjointed pieces of information about the series beforehand, before going into it, so as to only have a fuzzy and sort of quasi-formed, rudimentary image in mind before being hit with something like this. More than most first episodes of most seasonals taken in over the past few years - the throwback aesthetic and nature of it baked into the premise, the combination of genres involved, oscillation between the cute and the eerie and ominous, the in-the present moments versus the detached wistful and meditative ones - As I said, series like this can just have what looks like a number of the correct ingredients in place on paper/on the surface and still turn out as a middling or low-tier disappointment, but they're also the ones that have the makings of some of the greats - of some of the minority of anime seen I've rated with 8s and 9s out of 10. And to be able to identify or get that sense as early on as the first episode is striking.

A question for the smokers, on a hot day, wouldn't smoking make you even hotter? Seem like it would make you feel uncomfortable?

In the immediate vicinity of the air directly around you temporarily, yes. But internally, any resulting sensation of heat is less prolonged and diffuse than that from drinking a hot mug of coffee or tea or eating a hot bowl of soup, chowder, or spicy curry. And many people don't normally refrain from things like coffee and soup in the morning or while dining out just because of high temperatures outside and summer weather.

For smokers, it's the same. But also keep in mind that many smokers use cigarettes and other similar/related tobacco products as stimulants, taking short and quick puffs to produce a stimulant effect, like little buzzes or bursts of energy. Just the consequent release of norepinephrine in the brain can provide a wave of rejuvenation which folks will likely deem trumps or overrides any discomfort from perception of a minor and fleeting temperature change. Some people can get their chemical fix for an hour or more from an activity which lasts five minutes or under.

Going to preface this by saying I don't like romance I only watched episode 1 because the art style grabbed me. I don't know if I'm going to come back next week since I found the male love interest really really annoying. Might give this show another shot or I might not. Who knows!

For most of the episode (I think everyone had it) I didn't know where it was going but the last scene...the mystery seems interesting, as well as the world, the future and the city that has stopped in time? cool but it's a shame it wasn't marked better, if it wasn't for that strange futuristic thing floating above the city, I would never have thought it was the future xD

As for the romantic plot...we start with a sexual assault reduced to a joke, I guess it doesn't convince me.

But despite everything it looks like something interesting is coming.

A very good premiere!

I thought the general malaise and eeriness gave this episode such a great vibe. It wasn't at all what I was expecting, but I was delighted. The soundtrack did a lot to put us in that state of not knowing what to expect; it's very nicely done. I also enjoyed how the mystery didn't hold our hand, and let us figure things out for ourselves. The girlfriend detail is crazy. I can't wait to find out more. The sci-fi element is also really intriguing; I'm hooked!

I love anime where there is sexual tension between the protagonist and the love interest. There is definitely sexual tension between protagonist Kujarai Reiko and Kudou Hajime. Kujarai reminds me of Major from Ghost In The Shell but a softer version. She is beautiful and in love with Hajime, but Hajime is very standoffish to her for a reason. This isn't a spoiler, as the Crunchyroll description says it, but Hajime happens to be in love with a woman who looks exactly like Kujarai. Absolutely will keep watching this one.

I've been looking forward to this since the previews, but this episode was extraordinarily boring. Like I keep falling asleep in the middle boring. And one thing that bugs me is how people stagnate their lives to keep living in the past and keep this nostalgia feeling they have going by living in Kowloon. I get that too much modernity is bad for everyone but to purposely stagnate yourself and deny yourself the great technological advancements humanity has achieved to chase off nostalgia is the height of pretentiousness, arrogance and hubris to the point that I just wanna wreck this town and drive everyone one out. Not really sure why but this one has bothered me quite a bit even though I feel nostalgic at many times.

Haven't read the manga or anything so my expectations are that she's somehow trapped in her own memory projected by the thing in the sky & maintained by the eye drops after some PTSD where her fiance dies/gets hurt.

Off to a great start 🤤

I LOVE how this show looks so far! The character designs, the backgrounds, all of it just looks so good! The music is great too!

I'm with Kudo, I prefer how she looks with glasses <3 Love Reiko! <3

This first episode really blew my expectations out of the water. I got like a pretty general idea of what this would be like and thought it sounded interesting but I didn't think I'd enjoy this show this much!

I need to see where this goes! Why does Reiko not have any memory of Kudo? And what's with that thing in the sky? A fake earth? My guess is that thing is like projecting a fake sky and a fake landscape around the city. Idk I'm probably totally off but we'll see. Looking forward to more!

I think I might have found my favourite anime of this season already!

This first episode is so beautifully animated and gives off the sense of an old school anime, which is very fitting since the main theme of this episode was about nostalgia!

And don't even get me started on the food!! It has no right looking this beautiful and tasty! From the char siu bao, to the wonton soup and even the dim sum!!! Just looking at those dishes made me hungry!! 😋

Gaaaaahh Reiko and Kudo are just so cute together!!!!!! I would have been fully on board if this was just a simple romance anime...

But THE PLOT THICKENS!!!!!!! 😳😳😳 That plotwitst at the end there definitely has me hooked now! Cannot wait to see the mystery unfold!!!

This was such an incredible 1st episode!!! Hats off!!! 👏👏👏

This episode really showed a good intriguing hook to the romance story. I never expected that Kudo's previous girlfriend looks like Reiko, or is it Reiko herself suffering from amnesia? And what is going on with that pyramid in the sky? I'll be looking forward to the next episodes. The opening sounds decent too.

@WatchTillTandava Thank you for the detailed explanation. It both answered the question I asked and revealed why cigarettes are so addictive. I didn't realize that was how they felt to a smoker.
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

This looked great, character designs very comparable to After the Rain as it's the same author. OP song also got some style.

Both characters Reiko and Kudou seems like decent people with relatable personalities. Kudou might be misunderstood from the surface but a down to earth guy. Their chemistry seems like the main part of the first episode. There's a few teasing moments but it's just the first episode..plenty of time to develop their characters. Oh and the setting, Kowloon Walled City has a mystique vibe to it given its history.
@Stark700 @Stark I got the same nostalgic feeling that I got watching "After the rain" so this might be exciting.

Hmmm wasn't going to watch this but saw the source material was an award winner so tried it out. The beginning was good until she started smoking :/ Then it was kinda boring and I thought it was going to be one of those "get a room already" shows, but Ramiel from EVA floating above the city and other little hints, like the eyedrops, made me wonder what else is really going on. Then the ending, OK I'll stick around.

Yeah, although nicotine (main active ingredient) is one of the rare drugs that changes its physiological effects and profile from a stimulant to a depressant/sedative in a dose-dependent manner, with higher doses actually paradoxically creative sedative effects, so in my case for a long while now I only have a few a day with a higher dose as a sedative/sleep aid. But most people you see in public and portrayed in media like this are "on the go" frequent and social smokers.

And no problem.

The story, coming from the author of After the Rain, is gripping and charming, but the animation quality leaves a lot to be desired from EP1. Too bad they can't get Wit Studio and the After the Rain team (also Aimer for the theme song) back for this one. Still, I am cautiously optimistic in looking forward to how this story ends.

first episode didn't disappoint. I haven't read the manga so I don't know what know what expect.
the animation and artstylw ate! I love how it has that retro stylization but also the bright colours of modern day animation. I love the detailing, from the buildings being old and rustic to the orange evening sky. it reminded me a bit of Dohoredoro.
character design is good. Reiko is so well drawn. i love her hair! and kudo has been drawn nicely too. I think the way theri characters look really adds depth to them. especially their eyes. also loved the fanservice too!!
the beginning of the episode had ke a little confused but by the end, I realised its not just a romance but has a mysterious under tone. there's alot to unwrap about this world and I liked how Kudo knows something while Reiko is completely lost. the wolrd itself seems to hide many secrets and that floating satellite thingy
the entire concept of nostalgia hit me. kudo not wanting change while Reiko yearning for it. again, an air of mystery around this theme too.
I liked how the romance is paired with the perfect amount of mystery. it really makes you want to know more. also loved the fact that the characters r mature and the romance too.

Yeah, the claim to "adapt the whole story" in 13 episodes is NOT misleading, it's basically speedrunning the manga and only showing what's relevant for the anime's limited runtime. Yelp...

Reiko’s design was chef’s kiss as it is, and yeah, the adaptation really did make sure it stays the way it is. If anything, I’m impressed with the colouring, I mean it gives you the sense that the story is actually taking place somewhere as densely populated and polluted as Kowloon walled city. Though they started the episode as if this series is going on for years and we as viewers already know what to expect, but yeah, I mean that’s how the first chapter is lol. Also yeah, it really does feel like the story is set-up in a different timeline altogether where people have no problems whatsoever with something that floats above their city and looks like a satellite in itself lmao.

All this talk about nostalgia and stuff which does give a sense of mystery about Kudou, is I think enough for any girl to feel the hots for him… I mean girls love mysterious guys lol. Though we’ll see more of that going forward, as for now the episode itself gave a basic idea of how this series is going to be moving forward. A sense of doubt, dystopia, engaging interactions and LOTS of fanservice( ͡°( ͡° ͜ʖ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ʖ ͡°) ͡°). Reiko’s in love with Kudou from the first episode itself too, so yeah, that is going to be a thing too

Just hope the later stuff doesn't turn off anyone lol. Great premiere, but yeah, this is some serious pace, I MEAN THEY ADAPTED THE WHOLE OF FIRST VOLUME IN THE FIRST EPISODE ITSELF!!!!!! Guys slow it down lol.

Heh after reading some comments, apparently a rare opinion: I’m somewhat worried about pacing of the adaptation.

Like, for context, I’m not even a “fan” of manga yet. I started reading it literally some days before watching the show, and I stopped at the same point in the story where first episode ends (coincidentally). And it’s worrying, because 1 episode adapts the whole 1 volume, 8 chapters. And it feels during the watch, al least I feel it.
I’m not sure that speedrun is the best approach for the story based on idea of nostalgia and “romanticism”.

For example, in the manga there is right from the beginning accent on the idea of “repetition”.
Anime watchers only doesn’t even know about CONTINUOUS banter between Reiko & Hajime, sure it still present in the story… but there is way more in the original. And amount of memeable cute faces of Reiko absent from the first episode is no small.

Certainly some can argue that it is a choice to cut all “fillers” and it’s not a bad thing to concentrate on the main plot… but idk… I really feel that this goes against the very theme of the story.

Anime watchers only did you notice the nuances of the pacing? Have you felt like something was missing, as it was happening in the background?

Really loving the retro style to everything, when Reiko picked her glasses up at the start it really reminded me of Rei picking up Gendo's glasses in NGE. Kowloon looks like it did in Shenmue II- all dirty, cramped and labyrinthine, it's a really amazing choice for a setting. Then there's the central mystery of what's going on, which is very intriguing. This has jumped right up my list of shows I want to watch this season.

@dimidrum I agree with you. The meandering slice of life is very important because it reinforces an emotional theme. Although I have renewed hopes that the anime can pull the story off, and even meet important emotional/atmospheric beats, I don’t think it’ll be able to hold up to the manga. We just won’t feel that same bittersweet nostalgia as the characters in the anime.

It’s a shame the animation industry has changed so much—this series would’ve been a perfect fit for the ’90s style, with slow atmospheric beats, quiet filler episodes, and a much more modest animation budget.

That said, I think even the most nostalgic viewers might’ve dismissed it if it had taken that route. Once you’re used to fast-paced storytelling and high production values, it takes real patience to adjust back.
