So basically Kobato if she wasn't as.... Alien. hopefully it wont end up like a Kobato at home situation and is able to stand on its own. At least its a good excuse to go back and finish Kobato so i can compare em.

This is the best première of the season so far for me!
I like the main character so far. She could have been depressed but she is trying to get through this the best way she can.
I was a bit worried she would need to physically get the tears in the bottle, but it's fine, she didn't tackle them to steal their tears...
If they do this right, I expect a lot of tears form viewers like me as well!
EDIT: That will help boost the number, let's think of it that way...

I can't fully judge this with just one episode yet, but based on the plot presented here, it might bring us various emotions throughout the series. The protagonist needs to collect these so-called tears of joy to create the seeds of life and break her curse. The only illogical thing was her teacher suddenly saying, 'Meg, you’re going to die in a year'—it came out of nowhere, without any emotional weight or buildup. If each episode follows her traveling, meeting people, and helping them to obtain the tears, it will be reminiscent of Violet Evergarden.

Not entirely what I was expecting from the show but not bad. Starting off Meg received the biggest bombshell of news anyone can receive and she took it fairly well. Her personality is great and she seems very loved by the people she’s come to known working under one of the great Sages Faust which will be to her advantage considering she needs to get really close to people really fast in order to survive. First episode already had me tearing up a little with the little girl and her mother. I’m excited to see the beautiful moments this anime will show us in the coming weeks.

That was way better than I expected, actually. I only found out about this show yesterday.

The blend of comedy and drama felt really natural. I expected the show to be darker after reading the synopsis but the comedy didn't feel that out of place and the more serious moments later in the episode felt really natural. Meg's a fun protagonist. More excited for this show than I thought I'd be. The only complaint I have is with the animation, but even that had some really good moments.

Wow. This series is rather heartwarming, in a sense.
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

Goddamn, that was good. This show was pretty low on my preseason hype scale, so it really caught me off-guard.

I love this main character already. One of those characters where their dramatic expressions and mannerisms cycle rapidly in a very "anime" way. Those characters are always hit or miss, but I really enjoyed how they handled it in this one. The eccentricities in her personality felt well-timed. For now, anyway. I will have to just wait and see if the delivery becomes annoying later on.

Also, a pretty emotional story for this one. Considering we just met all the characters, I still felt the impact of that ending scene. If I had to guess, tt seems like this show is going to be more episodic in nature. I am all for some emotional roller coaster-ing episode to episode as she collects the tears to save herself. Meanwhile, bringing joy and bettering the lives of those around her. A very promising premise for me, personally.

The art looked super clean. Nothing extraordinary, but quite palatable. Animation looked good too. In the same vein as the artwork.

I'm excited to see how this one continues. Good stuff.

Good start. I like that they just jumped right into it without a build-up. Hopefully they'll allocate more time to the "cases", as the setup for this one was just enough for a microsad. I think I'll enjoy this one.

Concept, style, and characters all really working for me. I love the portrayal of a witch's house bursting with wildlife and elaborate spells for simple needs. It'll come down to the individual stories in the tear collection, though. The first was just okay, but most of the episode had to go to the premise. I'm not expecting Mushishi level vignettes from this, but I can hope for Wandering Witch.

Overall Thoughts on Episode 1 of "Once Upon a Witch's Death":
The story kicks off πŸš€ quickly, immediately establishing the main goal. The pacing felt okay πŸ‘. However, the story seems somewhat simple and straightforward πŸ€”, with the journey to the already clear objective being the potential source of interest due to its adventure and fantasy drama elements ✨. It seems action-packed fights might not be a primary focus πŸ•ŠοΈ.

Character introductions were not very thorough πŸ‘€, but the main character was engaging 😊. A side character felt quite mysterious 🀫, even causing the main character to be suspicious. Initial character connections seemed promising 🀝, but there's a feeling that the characters might not have much room for significant development later on πŸ“‰.

Visually, the art was appealing and colorful 🎨🌈, although no specific artistic elements particularly stood out 🀷‍♀️.

The music was largely unnoticeable πŸŽΆβ“, possibly blending well with the anime. However, the main character's voice was a bit irritating and grating πŸ˜¬πŸ‘‚. Sound effects and opening/ending themes didn't leave a strong impression.

I liked that, hey Guild Receptionist take notes, that's how you make a cute character likable. Tears of joy, oof I would just hang out at weddings every day. Where else are people so happy they cry? I was gonna say the dad and daughters shouldn't count as those were sad tears but I guess she still gets to use them for something.

The comedy part isn't for me, but I like the mc otherwise. It would be nice if the series had a more serious tone, but I look forward to the coming episodes. Anna, you are such a good girl ;___; Edit: And I wonder if the curse has to do with how her parents died? Maybe our mc was cursed then.

Well, this series is already in good company of the new spring seasonals in the sense that it's among those I decided based on the first episode that I'll very likely end up watching through to the end, as opposed to those I already implicitly decided that I'm probably not going to continue with based on the same first episode or even just a few minutes of it.

I don't expect this series to match or exceed Majo no Tabitabi either in the fun and funniness as well as refreshing honesty and "twisted" vanity or intelligent ruthlessness and pragmatism of this Meg lass compared to a gem like Elaina. She follows the footsteps of giants there. Nor do I necessarily expect its more episodic stories where I suspect we'll be meeting one-off or two-off sets of characters to be as varied or engaging.

But what I did like is that for whatever reason I seemed to have the wrong anticipatory impression of this series, because I expected it to be a lot more dry and melodramatic in a way which would be dull for a series like this where the plot (or at least the series of episodic mini plots we can probably expect) isn't anything not seen a thousand times before. I pictured it something like the stereotype of Violet Evergarden in my mind (haven't actually watched the series, but just a stereotypical impression of it) in the form of a witch/magical girl series. But instead I liked how Meg was rather a goofball, they seem to be having fun with it, art and color palette was nice, lively, and no characters were unlikable. Reminds me more now of the energy of Sabrina the Teenage Witch or certain cartoons. I'd kind of rather a show like this be a comedic Slice of Life or a dramedy versus a heavy melodrama. At least just at this point in time with what I have already seen behind me.

And setting fantasy series clearly and quite openly in England with the main character as a witch or mage or wizard or sorcerer will never not bring me back to Mahoutsukai no Yome. I wonder if Meg knows Marielle and the coven which would recruit Chise, if we were ever in the same universe.

Great storytelling so far!
I need somebody who can love me at my worst
No, I'm not perfect, but I hope you see my worth
'Cause it's only you, nobody new, I put you first
And for you, girl, I swear I'll do the worst

If you stay forever, let me hold your hand
I can fill those places in your heart no else can
Let me show you love, oh, I don't pretend, yeah
I'll be right here, baby, you know I'll sink or swim

This ain't bad. I wasn't too sure after reading about the premise, but it struck the right balance for me between sappy wholesomeness and wacky/whimsy. Meg is the key to all of this, and she was surprisingly likable. Funny that this is Bocchi's voice actor.

For me this slots next to Yaiba and Ballpark this season. 3 episode-rule in effect.

It gives off a similar vibe to Kobato, where they have to collect people's fragments to fill a bottle but this time, Meg has to do it or she dies.

I do like this episode. I wasn't expecting a tearjerker, but then again, parallels Kobato.

Pure vs mixed tears of joy, ha? I thought all tears were generated from mixed feelings.. πŸ€”

Anyway, I truly wonder if Meg is truly about to die in a year or if Faust is lying to motivate her to become more social and/or stronger.

That image from the future was the sole "evidence" she showed her, and it was not a robust one; Faust might have manipulated it.

Death everywhere. Her parents—dead. Anna’s mother—dead. Meg, cursed to die.

So… the Witch Sage. Two options.

One: She knew about the curse for years and never said a word. Lived with Meg for a decade—nine years of silence. Not exactly trustworthy, is she? Whether Meg was "ready" or not doesn’t matter (and frankly, I don’t buy that excuse). Plus, Meg has no memories of her parents or early childhood—which suggests something darker behind this so-called "congenital" curse.

Two: It’s all some twisted motivation to force Meg out of her shell. But if that’s the case… it’s just cruel.

By the way, doesn't Faust the Witch look like Yubaba from Spirited Away?

@integaah wow, you're right I was wondering why it felt like I recognized Faust.

Nice first episode. Meg's a quirky friendly and capable MC on a time limit of a year to get one thousand joyful tears. Easy enough premise to swallow.

It was nice of Faust to give her a magical bottle that teleports the tears into them, that gives Meg more of a fighting chance!

ppls are saying it's like Kobato.

I can sorta see that.

But what it really remind me is that [Scribblenauts Unlimited PC game] I saw a random streamer played. Where the MC has to go around doing good deeds to make people happy in order to save his sister (with a time limit) from being turn to stone.

The having a time limit part in this anime gives me that same feel.

So she'll have to gather at least 3 tears every single day, for 365 days non-stop! That's crazy! Who cursed her though, wtf? Maybe her parents were special and it's blood related?

Anyways, Faust dropped bomb very randomly. "Btw, you gonna die" wtf, maam?
It's hard to say if she's honest about Meg. Maybe Meg is cursed but it's not lethal. Maybe Faust is doing all this as a test, plus to force Meg on an adventure?

If curse is true, at the very end of episode they already spoiled us, with "a story about a witch who made a miracle." So she survives then. No tension lol.

As for the quest for 1000 tears. The reward is immortality, in addition to surviving the curse, which is a solid bonus.
