I thought it was incredible, every minute of the movie was jam packed with so much artistry and the fairly toned down story was greatly elevated by the insane ambitious animation coupled with the beautiful soundtrack, while I did think it was pretty obvious it was going to move in the direction of one of the girls dying it still was handled so well I was getting very close to tears in that final montage.

I sincerely think this is the kind of work that is going to inspire a lot of people to create something of their own.

@FragmantLemon
While there's probably ambiguity to interoperate another way, that felt pretty clear to me that this section was not literally a alternate timeline and was Fujino creating a what if scenario in her head as a coping mechanic.

“Thank you for bringing me out of that room”

This was the best Fujimoto work for me, the hype for his other stuff just fell flat to me, but I found myself throughly moved when watching this. Beautiful in every aspect and some of the best art I’ve seen in a long time. Was such a fun time seeing this in a packed cinema. Was honestly surprised to see so many fans.

Fujino and Kyomoto story was heartbreaking and I hate that they didn’t get a happy ending, but that’s truly life sometimes. People don’t always get the ending they deserve. Still, that doesn’t invalidate the time they spent together.

One moment can really alter the trajectory of our lives and although it’s terribly sad how their relationship ended, I found myself desperately wanting to reply to Fujino’s “if I never took her out her room, she never would’ve died” with “Yea, but she never would’ve lived either.” It’s no one’s fault for what happened to Kyomoto, but she would had never got to experience friendship or all the joys of life if not for Fujino’s inadvertent koma panel drop lol. There’s also no guarantee something wouldn’t have happened to her at some other point, just too many variables.

What does really hurt is how they left their relationship. I just felt a lot of shades of Kimisui/I want to eat your pancreas in this one even down to the news broadcast scene. Also just based off what the axe nut was saying, was this made in the wake of the Kyoani fire? Crazy how you claim your work was plagiarised and then kill people like yea buddy now your work’s never getting acknowledged lmao.

S/O to Kawai Yuumi for her job as Fujino as well. Really elevated the film. I love when characters talk like normal people. Getting people who aren’t trained seiyuus is such a good choice for these sort of films.

This was such a good watch, it’s not too long but still resonated with me a lot. You never know when the last time you’ll speak to someone, so make sure it counts. I’m feeling motivated to get back into drawing as well after this!

While the movie is indeed emotional, it didn't hit me the way I was hit by some other works. It was crucial on why I rated it a 9 rather than 10. However, I understand that it could be that I couldn't relate that much.

That walking sequence though, I typically only see that sort of artistry in a Cloverworks anime.

Same. I even read the one-shot manga years ago and either didn't catch it back then or just forgot. I feel pretty dumb.

I would like to think that the title was intended to have a double meaning; looking back on your past and contemplating on why you keep going, and the many, many shots of Fujino's back, seen from the viewer's and Kyomoto's perspective.

I saw it in the theater today. In my area in the US, there are only daytime showings. And American theaters always have the sound volume cranked super loud.

I agree with most of those above, the movie itself is quite wonderful. Do what you have to to see it. There is a bonus at the end, interviews with the director and the two lead VAs, stay for that too.

"Look Back."
It was finally released in the movies.
I read the one-shot but I didn't remember almost anything and in a way it was like I was watching the story for the first time. I loved the movie. the characters, the animation, the seiyus and especially the soundtrack.
It was amazing.

Randomly scrolling through MAL top list and saw that this was on theaters? Bought a ticket and watching it tomorrow.

Edit: saw it today, the death of one of the character felt like a cheap plot line but the movie was overall pretty good. I'm stuck between giving it a 9 or an 8, I hope that good bye eri gets a movie aswell.

That was absolutely amazing. Probably the best movie I’ve seen all year. Only an hour long and it manages to have better pacing than most movies which are longer. I legit thought this movie was animated by Science Saru at first, since the animation style is so similar.

Was also pleasantly surprised that everyone in my theatre stayed behind to watch the end credits. That usually never happens. My only major gripe is the montage at the end consisting of all the still imagery.

That and I felt very depressed by the end. Maybe I should watch Smile 2 to cheer myself up.

@HansDevX look up kyoto animation arson attack, it's not a cheap plotline, we don't know much about fujimoto himself but the one shot seems at least on some extent to be related to the kyoto animation incident, it was written 2 years after as well.

@dragoncapsule505 You are taking the emotional angle. Where did you get that relationship from? I didn't see anything that relates the two and the type of attack was different aswell unless if the author himself says so there's no way to tell. One was a pick axe and the other an arson, two totally different things. What I mean by cheap is that it felt like the death was just included to add sentimental value and nothing else. It was just a random attack, there was no build up that led to it which is typical of this author where everything is fine and dandy but then the next day a meteor falls off the sky and destroys the earth or kills half of the entire cast of characters (chainsaw man).

Just got back from watching in the cinemas here in the UK. So glad that they brought it over to cinemas despite its length.

Incredibly detailed and expressive animation with a story that while is both short and sweet holds a lot more meaning beneath the surface. Definitely one I'll be thinking on for a while.

For being Studio DURIAN's first major work it's remarkably impressive what's been achieved here, I look forward to their next project.

Well this definitely had that Fujimoto's feel to it. I've only read Chainsaw Man and Goodbye Eri, so I was expecting something like one of the two, mainly leaning towards Goodbye, Eri. And in a way it is, but not exactly—they're more different than you might think. I loved everything about it, from the art and story to the characters. Everything about this movie was amazing. So glad I was visiting France so I could go to this whole special premiere thing. Japan releases in a couple of weeks and the west will get it who knows when...

For some context, Fujino is an arrogant fourth-grader who thinks she's the best artist ever. That's until someone named Kyomoto, who's too socially anxious to attend school, starts submitting work to the school newspaper and turns out to be on another level entirely. At first, it seems like a rivalry story where the winner takes all, but I liked how their art comparison shows that both are missing something. Fujino shows people, dialogue, and plot, while Kyomoto shows details and setting.

The second half of the movie basically retells the first half in a condensed form, showing the earlier symbolism but focusing on Kyomoto. And as a result of their childhood collaborations, Fujino, who has given up manga to focus on karate, saves Kyomoto's life using her karate skills to prevent a massacre. For those thinking this is a feel-good movie, it's not. Considering the madman of a creator that's behind it, there's a lot of violence, blood, and even a school massacre. Few anime touch on such sensitive topics, but I loved how this story handled it.

Besides the story and plot, the art direction of this movie was phenomenal. It's unlike anything I've seen before. I want to read the one-shot later because I think they faithfully adapted Fujimoto's art style and brought it to life perfectly. Take notes MAPPA. I'm just kidding, but there were production issues, though nothing major affected the final product from what I could see.

This is easily one of the best movies I've watched in a while, not just in anime. It doesn't feel like anime anymore. it feels like a live-action movie, and that's what I love about this medium. Overall, a beautiful story, and you'll need tissues because it will make you cry. A solid 9/10, and I will definitely rewatch it when it comes to streaming. After all, looking back is the only way we can move forward.
@IzanaSolos
I know it wasn't your intention with this post as anything more than a cheeky joke but it does make me sad coming out of this film and seeing people use it to put down the CSM adaptation, as if that adaptation wasn't a labour of love clearly made with philosophies in mind to bring Fujimoto's love of movies as a medium to the screen, an ambitious passion project made by a new director who wanted to boldly do the series justice. Just feels to me when people use this film - a film that celebrates creativity and passion - as a means of putting down an already criminally misunderstood and unjustly hated work of art it paints a very ugly picture of the internet and anime communities.

It was genuinely a beautiful art, I love the illustration style everything was good. I was really shocked and said when kyomoto died because she was just so cute and pretty although she is very shy and awkward. I wish she never died and they lived happily together... maybe it would have been better if it was a longer movie

I watched it on Amazon Prime. Holy shit. This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. They’ve elevated the manga, and the artistic choices speak volumes—there’s an emotional depth to it: When Kyomoto was running during the rain, you could feel the weight of every step that was being taken, and the ambiance shifted from a nuanced friendship to a reflect of loss, the OST that supports it all is just memorable, couldn't ask for more. The second half is filled with references to the Kyoto Animation arson attack, a tragic event where so many lives were lost. Really sad ending, especially the credit playing. 10/10, would be way higher for me if I had gone deeper towards my next rewatch. I love Fujimoto's One Shot more than Chainsaw Man but anyway, imagine Sayonara Eri gets this type of adaptation, would be generational.

Man I don't know what to say.. In many ways I'm glad I've already read the manga, as I don't know if I could have handled what was coming otherwise, as well as really appreciating every single moment we were given throughout the first half of the film.

I'm thoroughly impressed that they managed to elevate the story beyond the manga, as there are so many ways they could have fumbled this, yet somehow they delivered above and beyond on every single aspect.

The immersive atmosphere, the stellar voice acting, the art and facial expressions that portrayed emotional depth I have a hard time recalling ever having seen in anime before. And of course the lifelike and vibrant animation on par with the greatest of the greats.

Don't think I've cried this much since Koe no Katachi. Truly a 10/10 adaptation

I went into the movie thinking it will be like short wholesome watch with decent plot. That caught me off guard.
Its like Fujimoto conveyed his personal emotions and feelings through it tbh and also a tribute to other creators as well.

Loved both the Mc's Fujino who is ambitious, headstrong and also had loving goofy nature to her. Then Kyoumoto whos so precious, pure and wholesome but also honest developing not only as a character but as an artist too.
Loved the parallels of showing and comparing an artist whos good at story writing but not art and vice versa. The struggles of being a mangaka, the ups and downs with their personal surroundings well portrayed.
Their journey was great starting as kind of rivals in the school magazine to being best friends/co workers (loved how kyoumouto admired and adored fujino). The last part of the movie just went a full roller coaster of reality and emotions.
My heart really broke seeing Kyoumoto pass away that too because of an unstable person. Fujino regretting, contemplating and the what ifs scenario playing in her head. Her weekly comics, the autographed jacket, most importantly the manga panel which started everything all preserverved by kyoumoto showing how much she cherished fujino and her works.
Always inspired by her and i guess the reason kyoumoto wanted to go to art school and be by herself was to not only be a better artist for her but also to show she can improve as a better person who fujino can rely on.
The scene where the manga panel goes back and forth through door as if passing on a message from kyoumoto to fujino, just chefs kiss. Couldnt have been done better and fujino accepting her message & moving on with her work as a sign of not only as a loving gesture to kyou but also giving respect to her as an artist she adored/respected. Beautiful.

Studio Durian did a phenomenal job. From the transitions, the gorgeous art style and color palette, the animation and the music perfectly woven together to create the desired affect which adapted well into the story line and projected the emotions perfectly. Standing ovation.

Great movie all around for a 1 hour adaptation and i enjoyed it thorougly with heartfelt emotions.

This is such a well crafted adaptation that really manages to convey fujimoto's stile and paneling. It felt really gutwrenching and almost a personal story from the author. Hope this studio gets picked up to adapt Goodbye Eri and Fire Punch, too.

There were a lot of nice homages to other fujimoto's work throughout the movie.. aside from the obvious explosion shot it was really a good surprise seeing the cover for Fujino's manga to be the ones from CSM and even a reference to the Denji x Reze kiss.

congrats to fujimoto on now having 2 amazing adaptations of his work, he's 2 for 2 now and i'm glad to see it. i'll be honest, the oneshot for this was initially my least favorite work by fujimoto, but upon reread i actually liked it a lot more, but this adaptation takes it another level further and blew my mind. beautiful from start to finish, loved the visuals, the directing and camera work, the color scheme, just everything was perfect. didn't expect the drawings within the universe to come to life and even that was so cool.
luffy on the jump cover was so accurate as well, because he is the face of jump. the chainsaw man and sayonara eri references were great as well, and now i pray that sayonara eri gets an amazing adaptation soon as well. thank you to fujimoto for creating this and the staff for working hard with it, and this is an easy 10.
