The saddest day.
He'll be remmebered forever. Not many people in this world has inspired and brought happiness as he has done to many generations.
May his soul rest in peace.

Okay while art wise it's true, it's also *not* true, Saint seiya came out before dragon ball and it was arguable more shounen than og dragon ball was, it was also a pretty large hit in many parts of the world, so other shounens would have copied the formula regardless
@lycan_

Saint Seiya's serialization started a year after Dragon Ball.

Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z were a couple of anime that got me really interested in watching anime in the first place, and I remember watching these two series on TV very late at night on Toonami when I was a kid. SSJ2 Gohan was one of my very first favorite characters in anime ever since I saw his whole fight with Cell. I remember thinking "wow, he's so cool."

Rest in peace Toriyama-san. 🙏 You’re one of the most influential manga creators of all time.

RIP legend
Toriyama sensei🙏
Thanks for making such wonderful manga and iconic characters.
Even after many decades later, dragon ball will always retain its special place in the anime community and entertainment media as it is today.
Your legacy wil live forever.

I logged into my inactive MAL account to make this comment:

I feel immensely sad, like I wish I died before him so I wouldn't need to feel the feelings of sorrow am feeling right now. People usually feel that about a family member.

Getting into Japanese pop culture led to meeting my Japanese wife and I can thank Toriyama partly for this.

Specifically it was Final Fantasy X that made me interested in Japanese pop culture and started the chain reaction leading to love for anime and Japan.

But Japanese pop culture would not have been as popular without Dragon Ball Z, it was my inception into Japanese pop culture.

Mata Kondo Toriyama San (till next time Mr. Toriyama)

I had to read two times the title i just couldnt believe what was written, akira toriyama with works like dragon ball, z or gt were part of the childhood of so many people of the 90`s i was one of them, he is known not only in the anime industry but also made an HUGE impact outside of it like almost no other series fuck even my grandmother (rest in peace ) who didnt have a single idea of what anime was knew the character, the series and movies with those iconics songs are something that even to this day i dont forget.
He will be remembered forever just like many others ones who passed away very early on his life, pretty sad that he was kinda young to die like this but on the other hand its kinda understandable given how is this industry with many amaizing people passing away very early due to stress and the amount of pressure they have to endure.
Hurts that he is no more here and we will not being able to experience the works that he was working on, hope he can rest in peace.
RIP akira toriyama

The end of an era. R.I.P Akira Toriyama 🥀 Thank you for everything. Dragon ball was and still is a huge part of my childhood. It’s one of the first anime I’ve ever watched. It’s what brought me into this wonderful world of anime and manga. My condolences to his family and friends. 🕊️ His work will forever live on, but will never be duplicated. 🐉

Devastating news. Independently of how you feel about Dragon Ball, it's impact in the culture around the world is undeniable and modern manga/anime wouldn't be the same without Toriyama's input. He even died so young...
May he rest in peace.

@Vene Please don't go to extremes. Dragon Ball is one of the best things to grow up with, but that doesn't mean we can blame those who grew up without it.
@RobertBobert Hey man, don't get so worked up, I'm not blaming anyone, these are lyrics from the Dragon Ball rap xd.

However that statement still holds true for every little boy growing up in Latin America ;)

Rest in peace. I hope you can be resurrected like Gokou or reborn. Love your work and games you created the characters for. I wished I could have met your in person but it is too late for it to happen now. I will miss your work. Definitely will be cosplaying Gokou when I can at convention.

68 was still too early..

A legend has left us, what a sad day.

He's the person who had the most influence over an entire generation.

If you grew up without DBZ, you had no childhood.

RIP Toriyama.

LMAO i'm fucking dead...

its crazy to think just how much DBZ meant to ESPECIALLY us millenials... who doesn't remember trying to do Kamehama, go SS or fly like they do irl? lol

I was one of the many kids who tried doing a Kamehameha

i'll never forget the girl who told me "stop trying to blow stuff up with your freaking hands" at recess back in the late 90s/2000 LMAO

Dragon Ball Z was my first movie (the movie the tree of might to be exact) and Chrono Trigger was my first RPG that I ever played. I’m deeply saddened and shocked by the news of his passing. Both Dragon Ball Z and Chrono Trigger were extremely influential on my fandom as you can imagine.

May you rest in peace, Akira Toriyama.

I argued with my mother about naming our dog Vegeta once... However, my efforts were futile.
Both Akira's death and my verbal defeat were very unfortunate, and I'm very upset over both.

@Vene I just want to say that Dragon Ball is not the only great anime of the 80s/90s that literally raised an entire generation of people. Imagine if girls who grew up watching Sailor Moon said that you didn't have a childhood if you didn't grow up with Usagi and company. But I don't want to argue about Toriyama's legacy at all on a day like this. I just finished the original Dragon Ball anime for the first time a couple of months ago and didn't think things would turn out this way right after.

Already commented on this elsewhere, but for posteriority, RIP this man, just sad.
He was too young still, it really bothers me this happens to so many mangakas, if it is the profession that is killing them, something has to change.
Supposedly he was ill and was keeping it a secret, he should just have said so, rather than something like this happening out of nowhere, it seems brain cancer might be at the root of it, just sad.
This has to be a loss as big if not bigger than Berserker's mangaka, seeing talented people going out like this, when they still had so much to give and share... T_T

OG Dragonball was the first thing I ever seen on TV, and what got me to watch it when I was 3y old, 28y ago, absolute LEGEND.
