My favorite story so far (it's too bad that the last chapter is) this whispering woman was a bit intimidating and even more so that girl half "possessed" by the whispering girl, and that this girl killed the whispering woman's attacker was shocking

Soichi is disgusting, how is he going to mistreat an animal like that and then curse it? how disgusting

Good this was the last chapter not bad
I'm not a critic or anything like that but I like to give my opinion

kinda funny/dumb they paired one of the best episodes with probably the worst one among all

if there wasn't for the last story being another Soichi, the whole series would've left a much better overall impression, but like this I'm only left annoyed

I agree. Soichi last part was a bit annoying.

Anyway, a good adaptation overall! As a fan of Ito-san works, I like it so much!!

I'm in the miniority who actually loved the first Junji Itou anime which IMO was great with a harsh critiscm on the art/animation because the story, atmosphere to breath to spirit of the plot and characters with the great cast was great.

... Even though I was very looking forward to this set of new stories from the same director and studio, I am very disappointed in the result...
Most of the chosen stories aren't the best of Itou's work because very few remain that hasn't been adapted to this point, but they could of animated a few better ones.

The problem though was mediocre this was for the most part in the direction. The tone is usually lackluster, along with the soundtrack to evoke the right emotion, and the performances weren't as great as the first anime, but slightly lesser.
The art/animation even though I didn't mind it in the first anime, was far worse in this. Very lazy in not even adding pupils in the eyes to leave them blank at a slight distance view.

The art always paled in comparison for the most part even though at least the characters remain with decent designs, but because the tone in the stories wasn't always fully properly executed while being rushed with lacking context, it lessened the decent to fairly good story that it is.
At least to me, I didn't mind not having equal extraordinary art from the manga because the direction of the stories in anime were mostly well done even with mediocre animation, but unfortunately, again, this one was far worse to the point that it kills the idea of a acceptable grotesque or horrific view like the first one lazily had but better than here...

Most were kinda dull even though I enjoy practically all of his work in its original form, but at least some of the best were good eenough.
I think the best that would have been hard to fail at that they succeeded in was; Hanging Balloon, Whispering Woman, and Layers of Terror.
The rest aren't as great in themselves, or were fairly entertaining but not notable like those, or most were lackluster or rather very flawed in portraying correctly.

Underwhelming. 6/10.
Although, at least it was still kinda entertaining with some very, better than others.

This episode has been a good finishing touch
The first story has been very good
And of course, we had to end the crazy Soichi, the story has been funny.

Some more of the few creepy stories and remaining meh stories. At least the good ones seemed to have been given more time to "breathe" by having entire episodes unlike the previous installment so I'm more satisfied this time around, I suppose. Definitely wanted more of the Tomie story and the one we got was quite good, but ended up liking some other titles too like the Hanging Balloon, Layers of Terror and the Whispering Woman.

Especially the first title from the list above, I found the whole concept to be fascinating and the conclusion left a heck of an impression on me, open endings often leave too much to interpretation but this had just the right amount of it. NGL, some of the developments did feel a little silly, like the mother's death for example which should've been totally avoided in all fairness.

In the case of the second title, the helplessness factor was just on point. Got to feel for the elder daughter of the family there, and the younger daughter definitely deserved better. In hindsight, it was almost entirely the mother's fault for horrible parenting skills and maybe a bit of the father's for trying to mess with the supernatural. As for the third, I liked how they portrayed the heartlessness of the father and the end pretty much signaled "well, that's what you get" at face value.

Souichi's segments were honestly a little too comedic and silly, imo. I know the creator wanted to promote this story along with Tomie and the Hanging Balloon but I just couldn't, some of the dynamics like the elder siblings always at a cross were identical and just felt useless overall.

loved the first part, the second not so much. coron's voice sounded really stupid tbh, that is NOT what a cat sounds like. it sounded like a person doing a really really bad cat impression (which i guess it WAS that, but yknow). second half was a huge disappointment compared to the first (whispering woman is easily one of my favorite segments from this anime, right next to layers of fear), and it was a poor note to end the series on :(

Whispering Woman - idk why but among the many short stories of Junji Ito I've read, this story is one of the few that stayed in my mind. The story is quite creepy and disturbing. The anime did okay adapting it.

Of course the last story would be Soichi. I have nothing to say. -.-

Again, I've stopped comparing the adaptation with the manga as they're in two different leagues. Of course, the manga was creepier. But tbh, this adaptation definitely did a lot better than the previous one. There were actually a few episodes or scenes that scared me. Some fell short, some ridiculous they were funny, but some episodes did hit. Hoping this adaptation would lead people to Junji Ito's original works as the experience of reading those manga is far from watching this anime. Junji Ito isn't called genius for nothing. And his works... reading manga couldn't be any creepier than reading his works.

Last too episodes hit differently, tbh...
And that souichi was a great comic-relief
When Souichi appears, I just feel like laughing (although he gives the vibes of a scum for human)

Junji Ito Collection was much more enjoyable and sadly underrated, I agree with and don't need to elaborate on what @waalex11 said. This was watchable but disappointing as far as Ito. Stand out was the floating heads

Last episode was good. I enjoyed both stories.

Overall, I didn't like Maniac as much as I did Collection but I still enjoyed watching it. I was always eager to see the next episode. I think the source material for most of these stories is probably strong. The issue is that Studio Deen wasn't really the right studio to give these stories a good adaptation.

Anyway, just want to also mention that the OP and ED were awesome and that I hope we get another Junji Ito anthology series. Also, hopefully the Uzumaki anime lives up to expectations.

The last story with Souichi and the cat was good, a shame we didn't get to see Amigara Fault animated in this tho! Hopefully we get another project in the future!

The Whispering Woman is one of my favourite short stories by Junji Ito and it was adapted quite well so that’s a W.
As for the second story, I really don’t care for Souichi whatsoever so pretty disappointed to see him get two of his stories adapted in these few limited episodes and not a good way to end off this series imo. Although the chosen stories were very much hit or miss for me, I did overall enjoy Maniac and give it a (admittedly quite generous) 7/10. Looking forward to the new Uzumaki anime adaptation now, which we will hopefully get this year at last, after multiple delays.

I absolutely loved the Whispering Woman. I loved how they lived symbiotically and raised questions on the morality of forced dependence. The two ladies completed each other. As someone who relates very much to the girl who couldn't make a single decision, this hit hard for me. I live by rng and actually, it's how I came across this anime; by a randomizer because I can't decide on anything. I thought this story was perfect and very wholesome and sweet. It only makes me happier knowing that the manga version is even more fleshed out.

Shoichi getting beaten up by his own creation was the perfect way to end the episode. You little shit lmao. Shoichi is literally that little brother from Hell we always describe to our parents.

5/5 ep

7.5/10 series. not sure if 7 or 8 yet.

I think it was a bad decision from the dad.
If only he saved the woman, his daughter wouldn't have been a killer.

They ended this show with a little bit of comedy lol.

This was a great final episode. I really loved the pretty serious domestic abuse spirit story of 'The Whispering Woman' - one of the most satisfying stories in this whole anthology for me - and the follow-up of Ito's best kinda evil, kinda funny farting cat for a relatively light-hearted story made it a perfect two episode combo.

Last episode

The first short was weak, interesting, and with a gore final!
The second was about Soichi, and this guy never thinks in possitve, always in evils!!!

Great season, fullo of shorts and some with great intensity and horror.

Layers and Whispering Woman are the best of this anime collection of Junji's work.
Even though animation overall is surprisingly lesser than Junji's first anime collection, while the art itself is of course subpar to the original... at least some of these stories were decently adapted.

Although, it's not hard to mess up the two best.
Unfortunately, unlike the first collection, most of the adaptations weren't great.

I expected better from netflix.
What a shame. Hopefully a better director and production does his work justice better than maniac.

In the meantime, I'm looking forward to Uzumaki.
Even though I don't love it's story and is not a favorite to me out of all his work, while also being overrated, but it should be a fun experience nonetheless.

Amazing final episode!

The whispering lady was so nice and accompanied Mayuri all the time, and I'm so glad she got her revenge.

Also, Souichi is everyone's fav, I know 😀😀. I'm glad the cat got his payback too lol. Funny episode.

I liked the first story. Poor Mitsu deserved better but at least she got her revenge.

Too bad that the second one was about Soichi.
He is really annoying. I was not familiar with Ito Junji’s works and I didn’t know about him until watching this anime but I disliked the two stories with him.
I don’t even find him funny, he is disgusting.

Also, I don’t like when it’s about animal abuse but i’m glad that the cat somehow came back to normal at the end. But with a kid like Soichi in the house, they shouldn’t have an animal at all.

Sorry, my english may not be the best, I am french.

This series was a 5/10, and I'm shocked to see that people hate it. Sure, a few episodes were a bit no. But the series as a whole was pretty decent. It was average.

Gotta end it on a Soichi story after all. Man, now I'm in the mood to do some rereading and get to the other Junji stuff I haven't touched. Wanna give it some time though, maybe next October, or maybe earlier since horror is good all year round.
