It's my own fault for getting caught up in the hype for this fight. Don't get me wrong, it was a good fight, but I was expecting them to add a bit more to it. For example, the details of Minazuki are still pretty unclear.
Still a good episode but it could, and should, have been so much more.

I'm incredibly excited to see Everything But the Rain from next week, as well as the community reaction to what is to come.

Please stop asking info dumps for Bleach as that would ruin the series. There's beauty and poetry in subtext and we do not need to be told exactly what something as conceptual as a zanpakuto power should do as those are based on the very soul of the user.

This is something good but also bad about Bleach. Kubo is really good at creating amazing designs and characters. The problem is there is so many of them that a lot of them don't get the screentime to shine or even get to show their powers

Absolutely THIS.
Bleach has so many cool characters with sick designs and great backstories, but a lot of them have NOTHING to do in story. I am actually shocked Kubo had no overall plan and just kept introducing new and new fractions of characters (Ichigo, his family, his schoolmates, dudes from his town (like Don Kannoji), entire Soul Society with half a hundred of different shinigami, outsiders like Kukkaku Shiba, Yoruichi and entire Urahara shop, then Espadas, 0th Squad, Visoreds, Fullbringers etc etc)... only for a bunch of them to dissapear completely or do "that one specific thing" and dissapear as well. I am not talking about the ones who died, obviously, but you would be surprised with how many characters are still alive (even the ones that were already shown, like Harribel or Nel).

I would have 0 complain if they all had some sorta role in this- but they don't, there are not enough villains to fight and stuff to do.

There is no other way to say or discuss it.

This... THIS. This is my favorite moment in all of Bleach. Since I read the manga around four years ago this has been the highlight of the story for me. The passing of Unohana, their entire clash is beautiful in the original black and white comic. I was honestly worried about how they would handle a battle so important to me whenever it would come in the anime. I was overwhelmed by joy. Thank you Pierrot and all of you animators involved in this. Thank you Kenapchi's VA's, you have done magnificently, I love your work and interpretation of these moments.

That tease at the end...

"EVERYTHING BUT THE RAIN". Title and cover of volume 60 of the comic, in my top 10 title and covers in the series, the anime commences its volume highlght next episode and will probably end this first 13 episode season. Another majestic and moments that reach the peak of the narrative will come soon. I'm so happy.

This. I totally agree, but it doesn't work like that for most people, unfortunately.

My only complain is about the second half, someone else has mentioned this already, it's super hard to focus on Nimaiya's palace after Unohana's death, first half is too impactful to just throw some comedy scenes right after.

God can people who just come here to complain about this, or complain about that just drop it if they don't enjoy it, like please just stop making the forum toxic with your useless complaining, anyway, excellent fight, I know some wished it to be on the level of 6 and 7, but that was likely asking too much of the animators, it was still great however. I cannot wait for the flashback mini-arc, it's going to throw anime-onlies for a loop

CLEARLY a rushed episode that massacred these beautiful chapters in the manga. I seriously hope it's not representative of what we'll get later on.
If you're an anime-only, I URGE you to read chapters 516-527 on your own. The emotional load and delivery is MUCH better in the manga.

Not sure how to feel about this one, they definitely did something special for the fight animation, but I felt the choreography and specially the music choice to be lackluster…

Unohana’s bankai looked great, but I felt like it was kinda rushed, I’d love for this fight to last the whole episode…

Maybe rewatching it with subtitles will make me enjoy it better.

100% agreed. When Brave Souls, a mobile game, manages to do the bankai scene more justice than this whole production, you know there's a problem.

How’s being in a bubble of “the episode was perfect” is any better? Having different perspectives is a good thing imo. For the most part people are not being toxic at all, just mentioning what they didn’t like about the episode, doesn’t mean they hate it either.

I wonder what do people here think Unohana bankai does ?
They definitely extended it compared to the manga. But I still don't get if it's for healing or melting

1: she can instantly heal herself

2: the blood she controls is all the blood of her slain enemy’s. Think of byakuyas thousand blades and now think of it like that where every drop of blood is a shard of metal that she can control for both offence and defence

3: she can open up any and all previous wounds previously healed regardless of if she healed them, someone else or if it was naturally healed. Basically making her Bankai an instant kill if she chooses re-opening an opponents prior deadly injury

4: just like her Shikai heals, her bankai is the furthest opposite. Her bankai has the ability to inflict immense torture whilst having the ability to heal herself and or opponents instantly. Hence why kenny keeps blacking out and coming back stronger, fully healed.

I got this info from the bleach wiki fandom. There’s more levels to her bankai from what I remember but these are the most noticeable. Feel free to look up the page, it’s an interesting read. The 2 sides of the coin of her shikai and bankai are frightening. One to heal, one to kill

To be clear, the wiki is NOT trustworthy.

A lot of those theories come from people who read the manga where it wasn't really clear what it does

With this episode of the anime, and after rewatching it, I think the scene with them turning into a skeleton was just a metaphor. It's about him breaking out of his bounds

I think her bankai can do 3 things :

1 create something like a domain (like in Jujutsu Kaisen ) full of blood that she can manipulate.
2 manipulate blood and use it to fight like a whip.
3 use the blood to heal herself and her enemy to enjoy the battle as long as possible.

It’s not really that it doesn’t make sense, it’s that the fight lacks proper story development and basic set up and payoff. Unohana does nothing all series and then this happens, and we’re suddenly lead to believe her entire narrative purpose was to sacrifice herself to make Zaraki stronger. Meanwhile Zaraki has one flashback concerning the whole Yachiru thing and that’s the main instance of “foreshadowing” for this. When I was reading this years ago I couldn’t even begin to care about this fight and I still feel the same now. At least it looks nice.

Also best shonen flashback? Have you read Shaman King? Rurouni Kenshin? Claymore?

^ Exactly! Although I love the art quality and the animation for this episode, just something about this was lacking. The fights between them felt so anti-climatic and felt super rushed overall. I feel Unohana did not get much screen time compared to the other shinigamis, so her death felt underwhelming. I was also confused about her bankai; I don't read the manga, so I wouldn't know. I would assume that her bankai has acid ability. I wish they could further explain this.

Rewatched the episode again with subs and better quality, I will bump up my score to 9/10 (10/10 first half, 8/10 second half) since I really enjoyed it more this time, but I still mantain they should've made "The Battle" the entire Kenpachi vs Unohana episode and threw the Oetsu stuff in the last episode, because going from a bloodbath to humor in the same episode was pretty jarring, even if the content itself was good in both parts.

Anyway, excited for the flashback and the two episodes of Bleach back to back on the 26th. Hopefully we don't have to wait too long for 2nd cour after that.

My honest opinion: this fight would be better if they dedicated entire episode to it. With no cuts, no shit. Take half the previous one, and take this one, extend it- and you will get the masterpiece. Meanwhile we got amazing fight... and then focus instantly shifts to Renji and Ichigo. Think of Yamamoto's death, there wouldn't be so much hype if the fight was split into parts and immediately after we were shown some other scene for 10 more minutes.

Worst part, the order is reversed from the manga. Kubo originally - and brilliantly - had Ichigo and Renji enter the pit of Asauchi BEFORE Unohana and Kenpachi fought, thus giving a reasonable sense of time to the narrative.

Unohana Bankai looked cool but it was quite weak, what was it supposed to do anyways? blood attacks? if so, they were ineffective, healing? Unohana still died from a stab
to be fair not all bankai are supposed to be OP, so i guess its fair that perhaps Unohana just didnt had a powerful bankai

i was hoping for a few extended scenes since i thought this fight was lacking in the manga, cool visuals but average fighting, i think the anime version is much better but still not that great

So... we still don't know what her bankai does... That makes the fight hella weak because it felt like she released her limits, but all she did was swing blood around lol. It looked cool but that's Kubo problem. His designs and sense of style is unmatched but his way of storytelling could be so much better.

Not the best episode imo. I would have liked the fight to be the whole episode. Explain more of Unohana Bankai, and what actually makes a Kenpachi. If the person with the title is the strongest in the Soul Society, why don't we always send this man/woman to handle everything lol. That's the same problem with Superman, with him around why is there ever any crime lol?

Ichigo and Renji screen time was whatever. Manga readers hyping up next episode, so I just have to see.

@Kokorowagurasu I never said it was perfect, I have issue with the adaptation, like cutting certain pieces of the manga like Byakyua's speech, but it's so god damn annoying to see the same people complaining in every single thread. It's not a "Different perspective" it's people who barely enjoy anything being whiny about a series they most likely jumped on for "hype"

The fight was told from Zaraki's perspective. Each time he dies and loses consciousness and gets healed he gets a powerup. The fight doesn't show what happens between him dying and reviving, as that's when Unohana heals him and the fight then continues countless times.

When you pay attention Unohana throws Kenpachi to the wall for example and throws a slash as him, that's when he says "I'm melting.." which means he died, got healed and then got a powerup and continues the fight afterwards.

Contrary to what we're seeing, the fight isn't continuous, it keeps stopping every time Kenpachi gets slain by Unohana. Unohana heals him and then they continue the fight. That's why her bankai may have seemed weak to you but it's actually quite powerful when you take the subtext into account...

When she fought him in the past she had neither bankai nor kaido which she has now so she's vastly more powerful now than in the past as well.

This was not so apparent in the manga, yet, as of now, it seems that the story really does divide into two separate segments. The Gotei plot, its serious, it has drama, it involves people trying to make a stand after facing a tragedy, a terrible loss, against an overwhelming opponent, and going to drastic measures, like sacrificing their own compatriots to make each other stronger for the coming battle. It could be a Sengoku themed anime, and nobody would bat an eye. Meanwhile, the Ichigo plot: boobies, highly stylised character, and literally a minute of any development towards the story. At this point, honestly, I would kick Ichigo out of the story, he is just the center of all the shounen tropes. xD

This season never fails to amaze me. As we got to discover, Unohana and Zaraki have a long shared past. Both were always searching for an worthy and strong enough foe, until they finally found each other. I almost couldn't believe my ears, when Unohana mentioned, that despite being so young Zaraki back then was already stronger than her. To think that this was also the beginning were he unconsciously began to bring himself down to the level of his opponent made it even more crazier. Obviously we've often times experienced him holding back, just to able to drag the fight out and therefor get more enjoyment out of it. So even any situations where he was pushed to the brink of death were just a faint taste of his true strengths? My god.

Even before TYBW, I was always wondering about Unhona's Bankai. Minazuki didn't disappoint. A blood world where she seemed to have full control over + blood surrounding her blade made the wait worthwhile and it definitely matches her "true" characteristics. Ultimately, it is sad to see her gone, however, it was only thanks to her help that Zaraki was able to awaken his long-suppressed powers from their slumber.

"Ah, what a sheer bliss to die from accomplishing one's purpose" also tells enough about her feelings in her moments. RIP Unohana.

I had a big smile on my face, when Zaraki was finally able to hear the voice of his Zanpakuto. We all know only too well what that means. I'm already super excited for this.

I admit the transition felt odd, though Oetsu's entrance made slightly up for it. Despite him being the "Blade God", he's such a goofy character and I love it. Surrounded by all these lovely "ladies" and Kon feeling like in paradise, Ichigo and Renji had no idea how to handle the situation. Especially when both of them had to execute that super wacky pose had me laughing. I honestly didn't expect every single of these ladies to be a Zanpakuto. We also learned more about the Asauchi, the nameless Zanpakuto who can be wield by everyone (mostly new members of the academy) and have the potential to become anything. After 3 days of constant fighting the Asauchis, Renji was the only one who passed. It seems like Ichigo, despite his considerable strength and all the circumstances he has endured so far, never fought with an Asauchi, whatever that means. Therefor Oetsu had other plans with Ichigo and sent him into the past (?), where he has to learn more about his roots.

Next weeks episode should hopefully give more conclusion. Looking forward to it.

I get it's part of the standard "hero's journey" motif, but you'd think everyone would be more direct in helping Ichigo power up, given that he's saved their asses countless times, and they need him up to snuff even now.

Sure, he's human (as well as everything else lol), but dude has come through repeatedly, so perhaps be a little more direct in getting him the help he needs? Advising him to look into his roots is a good start, but I guess I just don't see the benefit of being deliberately vague. It works for story purposes, but if this was real life, the soul society shot callers would be like "do whatever it takes to fix this guy's zanpakto dammit! Hurry!"

This isn't fair. How? How is the reboot finale of an old Shounen franchise this good? On an objective level everything about "The Battle" was near perfect. KENPACHI! For both, if I don't call it a tragedy what can it even be called? This story could've been a Josei master piece!! I could see it! The heart of grown women going kyun-kyun with clash of the blade. Destiny, romance, tragedy.

The emotional gut punch to Ichigo at the end was stunning. The pacing was just try to feel sudden yet full of anguish. The scene of the rain in front of the family clinic was just pain to see.

Ouetsu Nimaya what a dude if only he was there for the zanpakuto filler arc haha the honeys would've fit right in. His dynamic with Kon was priceless why's my boy not treated better!
