Some of the scenes felt too childish to a point I was cringing. Story wasn't that bad and animation was well done. A movie to spend the time but nothing remarkable. |

I think it's weird how the movie just ends with Suzu going to the boys, standing up against the father and after that she just ends up going home, they already told us that the abuse was never resolved before ... why the hell would a girl standing up against him change his ways, he wasn't even scared of pushing them live on camera. Also why the hell did the older ladies not go with Suzu or hell ... how did the father not decide to come with, surely it's not safe to let your own child go on her own to face against a father that's been proven to be abusive towards his own children. I loved the scene with Suzu realizing what her mother did as a sacrifice for the kid ... is a parallel to how she's now "unveiling" herself to the world showing her real self as a sacrifice for the boys, fantastic scene. Other than that it was a very enjoyable movie, the music was fantastic I just think it could've done a way better job focusing on it's elements of abuse and living inside a virtual world escaping from your real life. |

i feel like this movie had a great premise, and the execution was great, beautiful art, animation and music however, the plot was kind of incoherent and all over the place. i think its because the story tried to do too many things all at once, too many points that led nowhere and an ending that doesnt really resolve anything and leaves far too many questions unanswered everything but the plot id give a 10/10, but the plot really docks the experience. had every aspect of this movie not have been executed so well then itd just be a movie with a confhsing story and nothing very remarkable so overall id give it a 7/10 |

Sort of "Phantom of the Opera" with a bit of Disney thrown in. The best part of this film was the hyper realistic backgrounds in the real life world. The cloud animation did not go unnoticed. It was the first time I saw clouds expanding slowly like they do in real life, not a drawing. Animation was top notch. The last 15 minutes or so were somewhat good to very good. This might be a film worth owning on Blu-ray, to watch again on a big screen. Oh yeah, the 2.4:1 theatrical aspect ratio was great. |

Good movie. I don't know what I was expecting going in, but it was definitely enjoyable. Liked some of the songs. And that scene where Suzu sings as herself and all those lights appeared... beautiful. Simply beautiful. A lot of the scenery art was beautiful too. My favourite parts however were Suzu and her schoolmates. Suzu spending time with Ruka was great. Ruka, I thought, was going to be one of those snobby popular types. But she's just a really sweet girl. Her confession scene with Kamishin was hilarious and cute too. Really loved watching that one. I was smiling throughout that scene. Shinobu was a pretty cool dude too. Really liked him. 8/10. Overall a good watch. |

Glad I could catch this at the cinema in Sweden! I have very conflicting feelings regarding the movie. It's mostly positive, I loved the music, animation, side characters (especially Chikami, and the character designs were very "Hosoda Mamoru" obviously which is a good thing. I also really liked the theme and message that the movie tried to convey. Now onto the things I'm a bit confused over or didn't like. The beauty and the beast thing wasn't needed in my opinion and just made whole relationship building between Belle and Ryuu just seem very fast paced and weird, because the movie knowingly tried to mimic how it went in the beauty and the beast, but in the span of 20 minutes. I'm also unsure about how to feel about the ending. I'm glad that Suzu only replied with "thank you" to Kei's "I love you", because it would've been really out of place for her to have fallen in love with him suddenly, and they they're 17 and 14 respectively which is also why I'm glad for that. Of course like a lot of people, I didn't buy Suzu's stare down with the evil father, not because I didn't understand why he fell apart like that, but because it didn't feel like a natural conclusion to this whole thing. Something better would've been if someone had been filming or maybe if Suzu's friends had flown to Tokyo and caught him in the act, which is kinda farfetched but so was finding the apartment in the middle of fucking Tokyo. I'm slightly dissapointed with Shinobou friendzoning Suzu, but this is very typical of Mamoru so I kinda expected it, but I am still kinda bummed about that. Lastly, Suzu's father didn't deserve the shit she put him through. Although I understand where she's coming from so I'm not saying this in a critical way, I'm glad Suzu decided to mature at the end and reconcile. A slightly better ending or better pacing in the middle could've pushed this to an high 8, but for now I think I'll put this as a 7 on the verge of an 8. |

The "moderators" can just dox anyone they want ? dafuq is this world building ? And gosh I don't like Suzu, the way she treats people (her father, her childhood friend...), the way she just is, yeah they got the annoying self centered teenager right. Erf. I feel like Hosoda is running out of ideas. Summer Wars was already just a remake of his Digimon movie with his own world... this movie is a potpourri of the same ideas with some others like beauty and the beast (somehow) |

I wonder whose idea it was to make The Beauty and the Beast take place in a fantastical metaverse where the main weapon is doxxing through half assed wannabe avengers. Very bizarre concept indeed. In any case, this movie looks astounding, even for CGI standards. One can watch it in awe while marveling at the visual effects as well as the heartfelt the featured songs that the movie uses to convey Suzu's emotions. It even has a scene which compares in execution to the one from the first Pokemon movie, although in a different context but retaining the feelings of the audience. Down my spine the chills were successfully sent and there was even a moment when a teardrop filled my right chin. However, that didn’t happen as the story lacks a consistent development flow. One scene transitions to the next sometimes without a proper explanation and others with implications that are never shown. This leads to several questions popping up, such as: How come Belle started to feel interested in the Dragon enough to visit him directly? Is it possible for Suzu's friend (Hiroka) to have garnered so many followers for Belle so quickly? Why is Belle one of the very few AS that looks human? Why are there actually no cybersecurity measures in the U app? How come Suzu had to go tend to the abused children alone? Was the problem even solved by the end? And how does the U app actually work? So points are up to interpretation since the movie doesn’t answer them. In its place, it gives screentime to a rushed side romance (which still gave us one of the funniest confession scenes I've watched so I'll let it slide). Also, the latter half is the emotional one but the former was slow and it made me doze off a few times. In any case, I guess without delving much into the analysis, the movie can be enjoyed for what it is. It's certainly no Summer Wars though, that’s for sure. |

I like it. Really really like it. The animation, the songs, the hole thing. The only that I think it could be better it's the relation between the beast and belle. She says:" someone important to me" just in two encounters? Really? Buts that's it, I loved this movie. |

A visually pretty movie with good songs that promotes escapism, treats domestic abuse in a light manner, has several plot points that don't feel organically connected, and none of them has a satisfying resolution. Wonderful |

I cried at least 6 times while watching this film, it means much to me :’) Finally a film that doesn’t focus on the classic love relationship between twos (not that there’s something wrong) but on the main character herself and her struggles she has to fight for her personal growth; There’s still a little bit of romance but I’m happy that the main focus was Suzu and her social problematic/trauma that led her be that way; The plot was rushed and we all can agree with that but I still felt and understood the message that was meant to reach the viewer! Not wanting to spoiler so I’ll try to be more vague I can possibly can… I really felt it when Suzu said “I’m different and I understand why people are afraid to talk to me”. She was stuck in a loop by herself without anyone helping and she didn’t want to help herself even, she was in a dangerous comfort zone that she created by growing up with a trauma and she was fine with it without really noticing it wasn’t. Escaping from reality by joining the “U” world made her gradually more subconscious (and later on conscious since she faces the problem) of her situation. When Suzu finally made *that* decision (helping that person) thet led her out of her “bubble” is when she realized she wanted to grow up. She wanted to help that person so bad that she did more than she could for someone she didn’t know. And at the end Suzu do realize why her mother helped that girl by realizing she did unconsciously the same! Such a wonderful film! ❤️ Also the music is amazing! Belle’s voice is something beyond the world :’) |

This movie... this movie... is a completely mess. The adult characters don't support the young ones, the father figure is weak as nonexistent, the old ones barely contribute in the development and as a guidance for the young ones. Why did they sent Suzu alone to Tokyo?!!! NONSENSE!! A lot of things were pulled from between the booty cheeks. Maybe the writters, producers and director don't know or never experienced what is a circle of trusts, a circle of protection between close people, that's the reason I can think for this movie to be what it is, and for the characters and plot to be as bad as they are. |

I think the movie needed more time. Time to explore the ideas of being some beauty and the beast. It was everything so fast, so abruptus you know? If they had explored more of their relation, more of how they helped the kids, how their relation become something solid. But beside that, it's a pretty awesome movie. Fantastic musics, fantastic animation and visuals, fantastic comedy, emotions. Pretty awesome movie, 9/10 |

This anime isn't a romance as I initially thought... it's more than that. The Freckled Princess and Beast (or Belle) is a story of being able to endure any obstacle that comes your way. It's a story of fortitude, and that having compassion for others can really go a long way. 8/10 |

Honestly such a gorgeous movie. Suzu grows so much and it's beautiful how she finds her voice. Even as a plain girl, she found a way to be herself and it's inspiring. One thing I would've liked to see is what happened to Kei and Tomo afterwards but it makes sense that she couldn't do much other than protect them from a beating because she still is a child herself (yes she's a teen I know, but there's not much even teens can do in situations like those). This was such a refreshing and beautiful take on Beauty and the Beast, and I will definitely be rewatching it again. |

this movie barely feels like a hosoda movie outside of his thematic trapping of using the internet as a "real space" for a big showdown and even that doesn't really play out well. this feels like 2 movies worth of ideas stuck into one where not enough space is given to any of them to develop properly. what i love most about hosoda's works are the intimate small stories of profound emotional distress and catharsis that play out with characters accepting and embracing strange ways of being after struggling to find belonging and meaning in a world that often feels indifferent to those that end up lost and forgotten. hosoda clearly wanted to tell a story using the backdrop of contemporary mass communication tech as he's done before, but unfortunately he makes of the mistake of creating a surface level fiction derived from the deeply unstable and complex modern social media as a sort of organic social system in a way that both isn't convincing and isn't particularly interesting. i am deeply forgiving of contrivance as long as it's in service of something cool and fun or otherwise engaging. digimon war game and summer wars have deeply silly ideas about the internet but it's ok because they do cool stuff with it. the world in Belle just isn't cool or fun, it looks cluttered and blown out. it kind of just hurts my eyes. and the cgi just doesn't work for me at all, the stilted animation is distracting and the Literal Disney character design of Bell made me feel a little sick even before i knew its origin. i think the ultimate point of tension in a story like this is that there are smartphones. i can't stand seeing smartphones in movies, they are antimagic devices. they break the magic circle of a fantasy story immediately and pull me into the lukewarm underdeveloped drama that this story actually is. i would have preferred any other piece of fantasy tech, like a vr display user interface in the vein of dennou coil. but of course you have to have the smartphones because of the backdrop of modern social media. i think Belle would have been a much better movie if it was just made a decade ago, before the idea of what the internet is became so poisonous and unmanageable. a lot of hosoda's best tendencies are still here but they're all watered down and made too thin to resonate with me properly |

Show Rate Meter Guide - (5 Great _ 4 Good _ 3 Fine _ 2 Not Good _ 1 Bad).(dismal are sometimes needed) [Story] - 4 [Art/Animation] - 4.5 [Sound/Music] - 4.5 [M-Character] - 4 [S-Character] - 3.5 [Enjoyment] - 4 [Overall] - 4 The best thing about the film to me was the singing but they life she lived in the real world, did not seem it was bad or hard the only thing she really struggled with is not having her mom there with her and for some resin not being close with her father. The animation was really good having to animate two worlds is going to be hard, I liked the 3D world more in this film then in summer wars. |

I did a brief read of the synopsis and like many, fairytale called, "The beauty and the beast", appeared in my mind. Even now I'm inclined to believe that it's inspired by it and... well heartmoving like the original, although this is no short of a parody. I genuinely enjoyed watching it. Thanks for making such an amazing story! :) |

Alright, why does this movie only get 7.50 on MAL ? It deserves so much more love. That was a beautiful story, very different from what I expected it to be, surprisingly dark with very heavy thematics, and sso moving with a very important message about mental strength but above all about how kindness and care can do miracles if everyone puts their heart into it. I noticed some flaws, like for example the fact that the pacing felt a bit too fast, especially when it comes to Suzu/Belle's and Kei/The Dragon's relationship, I also was a bit frustrated that the villain-forgot his name-hadn't been fleshed out at all, and above all I found it disappointing that the ending for Kei and Tomo was so vague-although I assumes that the police would ultimately come- but it still did many things more than right. The story, the music, the characters, the voice acting, the animation, the message... I really liked it a lot, I wouldn't say it was an absolute masterpiece and it didn't impact me as much as some other stories but it was still a great watch, I give it a strong 7/10. |

The movie was beautiful. The animation and art is amazing. But most of all, the emotions I felt while watching. I cried when watching this movie... BELLE sets a very good lesson to life, from my perspective. It dabbled with social problems, and many other things. It showed that anything is possible,. The story in all was magnificent. BELLE sent a chill down my whole body as I watched. I thoroughly enjoyed the songs throughoutthe movie. One thing that just very slightly annoyed me was Suzu's friend just suppressing Suzu. I got over it since it all turned out well, but it got me fumed for a second,, LOL The soundtracks in the movie were DIVINE. I felt every single thing in my heart. The voice acting seemed so genuine. One key moment in the story that had me bawling was when Suzu started crying after she was unveiled I related to Suzu-sllightly.. very useless information, but I believe that's what made this such an emotion rollercoaster for myself. I would 100% rewatch this over and over again. (P.S. It kind of reminded me of Beauty and the Beast, y'know? WWWWW) |

Probably haven't felt this appalled since watching "Weathering with you". For starters, Belle and Ryuu relationship made ZERO sense. Romance? Where? Friendship? Where? Suzu wanting to know the identity of Ryuu was cringe. The edgy guy has a big dragon avatar and he's beating up people (who allegedly protect this virtual world) and he's destroying shit. Why would you look at him with sympathy as if you already know he's a misunderstood victim??? Any sane person would assume the guy's a trouble. Why would Suzu of all people take interest in a person, who, chances are, would likely turn out to be some neckbeard discord-mod - instead of s handsome Japanese boy the same age as Suzu. Odds were literally 1 in 5 billion here! + Imagine if your edgy avatar is chased by a beauty like Belle who asks you to reveal your identity and talk to her about you personal life and "why u mad"! Why? wtf? Suzu basically got interested after the guy invaded her concert, growled at her and said "don't look at me". She for some reason took pity because he was bruised. Did she not see him destroying dozens of peacekeepers? Crazy... Plus of this show is in animation which was great for sure; apart from CG that was less ok. Songs were fine, but not memorable for me, unfortunately. The best part was the beginning of the movie. Now... The last part of the movie is where things get absurd and purely idiotic!!! Starting with how they geolocated the kids in like 1 minute, after series of conveniences! Odds must have been astronomical. What was totally idiotic though is how grown ass women allowed a schoolgirl go to Tokyo ALONE (mind you, she rushes right away, even though travel takes many hours anyways), to locate and then CONFRONT a grown ass male who physically abuses his children, even though apparently several people talked to him about the issue already but that didn't help! Who writes this garbage? Are you freaking serious??? At first I thought the women would drive her to Tokyo and they'd at least confront the father together, but then the shot cuts to them just dropping her at the train station! W T F? Not even Suzu's "bf" tried to stop her or go with her! Even her father didn't foam from mouth after hearing the stupidity of his daughter. Are these people insane? Don't they realize how dangerous this is? Worst of all, Suzu's father didn't immediately drop whatever BS he was doing, jump into the closest car and drive to Tokyo to catch up with Suzu and beat some sense into her. Instead he texts her. He doesn't even call!!! Unbelievable... Oh, and when she returns at the end, bruised, he's like "wanna eat?" Holy shit man... I understand, the story tried to mirror Suzu's mom's sacrifice with Suzu's sacrifice (risking own life for a stranger), but they did an awful awful job at presentation. Sure, Suzu's mom's actions were criticized too, but comparing those two is simply unfair. There's a limit to idiocy when someone tries to be a hero. It makes sense for an experienced swimmer (mom seemed like one) to try to save a kid who is about to be swept away. It makes ZERO sense for a frail girl to rush to a metropolis ALONE to find a specific house (btw she got lucky the boys were outside, despite rainy weather. How convenient) where a mentally unstable guy is beating two boys and can easily beat her ass as well. What can possibly go wrong right? He could've beaten her to death and claim Suzu was interfering in family affairs. Sure, eventually police would likely reveal he was full of shit, but that wouldn't resurrect dead Suzu now, would it? Are we supposed to believe that underestimating a crazy person is comparable to a professional diving in a raging river? When it comes to abused boys. Turns out they aren't locked at home and even have access to internet and a camera!!! How incompetent are Japanese child protection services? Couldn't the boy secretly film the abuse and show it to the cops? Did he not call the cops? Couldn't the cops see bruises on the boys bodies??? We are to believe that the boy tried all of this but nobody managed to help anyways? And yet what Suzu, a schoolgirl did turned out to be enough? BS! |
