9-10/10 I really liked it!! I especially liked all the insert songs sung by Belle/Suzu ("suzu" means "bell" in Japanese so I thought that was a nice touch!)

The animation was really good, and it was really cool to see a bunch of places around Kochi! They even had a bunch of "高知家" stuff lol ("The Kochi Family", it's kinda like a motto of the prefecture). This movie also shares some similarities with Beauty and the Beast, from the roses, her name in U being "Bell", and even a ballroom dancing scene lol.

I'm not sure how

The confession part between
was really funny xD

I was kinda surprised that

I also want to add

The soundtrack wow, that was a must see in theatres absolutely amazing animation and sound 12/10 it deserves all the praise. Characters overall 8/10 would have preferred a bit more in the end.
My spoiler section is what makes it hard for me to give this a 10/10. It is still lacking in the end so overall 8/10

Saw it last night at the local cinema. Really enjoyed it. Definitely some “Beauty and The Beast” touches in some parts. Soundtrack is awesome. Story is pretty good. 9.5/10 for me.

Can't believe I actually saw it in Poland so fast after the premiere in Japan. As for the movie, I think it's good. When it comes to Mamoru Hosoda, I know he can do better. Script needs some improvements but at the same time, this movie looks so gorgeous I can forget about those flaws. If it's possible for you to watch it in cinema, do it.

Wow, what a cliffhanger that was. I don't know if it's only me or not but I feel like the movie's getting rushed near the end.

I didn't really like the ending and it did feel too fast paced towards the ending. At least we got a conclusion of Suzu and her Dad's relationship.

For the first time in years I found an anime movie that I hated.

Suzu doesn't deserve her father, he looked like a nice guy. And for whatever reason get that silence treatment.
And her classmates are somewhat okay, sure fought over jealousy, but sorry were said at least, something hard to happen.

I should had know that something was wrong with this movie when they got someone from Disney to make the design, which was a bad move, and got disgusted while watching and seeing Beauty and The Beast copy.

The world have 5 admins(Voices) that are just there, "U" sound like a good deep web.

The end was just a hot mess.

I was hoping an upgraded Summer Wars but was Summer Wars with Covid.

The movie was saved by it's amazing soundtrack and gorgeous animation though. The message of this movie about not to judge people by their look, about everybody has their own secrets and unknown sides are delivered quite well. But the message behind her mother's action, I still don't quite catch that because of that rushed end. I know that Suzu was supposed to learned what it means to be in her mother's position that caused a tragedy in her past and that tragedy mistakenly make a huge impact to her by saving Beast, but somehow it doesn't delivered enough...

This is curious because in the novel (also writen by Hosoda) the encounter between Suzu and Dragon (at the end) is described "as lovers (koibito)" when they touch their foreheads. I suppose this is left vague on purpouse.

That was so great, it had some problems in intial part like development of belle and classmate part in song popularity felt fast forworded and also the 5 womens and their what relation they hold with belle was also underdeveloped.

But second half was beyond awesome, the song after the her revelation scene, I was literally tearing a bit and literally after that I see on the screen the audience characters were also tearing up too. Damn that deja vu....I was literally had goosebumps.

Also there the seen with those kids father was so empowering and inspiring scene. Those were some breathtaking moments.

Overall really solid film, initial part were a little bit rushed and badly paced, but the second half and ending makes up for it. Overall this is my 3rd favorite mamoru film after boy and the best and mirai

The animation is undeniable because it's amazing and so pretty (lots of glitter, sparkle and soft colors).

The songs that Belle sings are also really good, I really like the song when Belle and the Beast dance in the castle and when Suzu sings in the U world.

There are some things that are not very clear or less detailed, such as about Peggie (a singer who thinks Belle is her rival), and how people around the world access the U world, and also because it's a bit reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast, I thought maybe there is a little bit of romance lol but at the end, neither Suzu's relationship to Shinobu nor Belle to the Beast has a clear ending. :(

And also the background of the people who want to destroy the Beast.. and how the Beast can have little fairies guard in his castle?

But that's okay, because everything ended happily, especially Suzu's relationship with her father. I enjoyed it.

A beautiful movie that brings together so many concepts and yet aces it. Considering Mamoru Hosoda's greatest hits like Wolf Children, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, The Boy and The Beast and Summer Wars; this seemed to visualize the world as of present. Where virtual life has given the chance to relive a new self and the people behind the masks of this new world. The sympathizers, the observers and the trolls all were spot on portrayal. At first I thought this was a new take on Beauty and the Beast, but with how the story unraveled, this was whole new realization.

Also the animation changing from real life to virtual life and the difference in the 3D modelling was revolutionary I'd say. The soundtracks the songs the art was all memorable. This one's gonna age like fine wine and gonna taste different every time you re-watch it.
9/10

Another amazing movie by Studio Chizu.

This is the best 3D animation in an anime I've seen in my life, the 2D backgrounds and scenery were on part, if not better than from movies like in Kimi no Na Wa.

I was surpised to see MAL rating at only ~7.5. That's probably because people try to look for deep meanings, perfect story pacing and perfect characterisation, sometimes forgetting to enjoy and feel the moment.

The climax song was insane, that scene was definitely a 10/10, in total i would say this movie is a very strong 9/10.

Also from the dragon's brother's words when they meet you can understand that he is the first follower - the angel, from the words that he said when he first met Belle - "You're amazing, you're beautiful", he said the same words to Suzu when they met.

I don't get honestly the super good reviews that much if you look at it from a subjective perspective. The story has actually a lot of plotholes (so many things constantly suddenly happening without any connection), besides the singing the voice acting is mostly pretty static and without emotions. I caught myself being bored/tired couple of times because of the montonmous voices. Feels also personally for me like the voices aren't fitting the character's ages and personality at all. There is not enough depth in any characters sadly. The end is a bit rushed too.
I really was looking forward to this movie for months but I mostly just like the music and some of the animations are very good too. Was expecting a little bit more from the trailers.

For feeling the moment I want at least understand the characters motives or behavior, that's why it's not unusual people are seeing a need in a good characterisation. It's not about perfect one, there was basically non at all which made it hard to feel with the MC but that's of course just an opinion like yours :)

So no offense just reminder that characterisation is actually important at some point.

Interesting! Maybe they left this development out because it wouldn't make sense to show them as "lovers" since there was basically no relationship building happening? Is the novel more detailed by any chance?

Yeah, in the novel there is more explanation about why Bell/Suzu feels attracted to Dragon at the beginning, but it´s more about both feeling lonely (and then because they both lost their mothers, etc.). I only have seen the novel in japanese and summaries, so I dont know the details (sorry), but it´s basically the thing.
There is also more about Suzu and Shinobu, like them being together in the same classroom when they were children, but after that Shinobu´s family moved to the city (Tokyo?) and came back just at the preparatory. Suzu clearly likes him, but the narrative sometimes focus more in the relationship between her and Dragon as somewhat romantic one (and the koibito thing at the end sounds confusing to me... also because the scene is a reminiscent to the end of Disney´s Beauty and the Beast, with the rain falling and all), so...

Sorry for my grammar, english is (clearly) not my first language.

Thank you for your nice words =)

I have read an article about Hosoda´s visit to Sitges this weekend and he said that he pretends to portray how our real lifes are more entingled each time with our virtual ones, to the point this will be confusing sometimes. I think that´s precisely the idea of having Shinobu and Dragon as different posible love interests of Suzu/Bell: one in the real world and the other in the virtual one. Maybe young people are living similar situations, in which they like the popular boy/girl at school but also meet someone "special" on Twitter...

I first discovered Belle from its soundtrack months ago and I honestly had high expectations since the movie received a standing ovation from Cannes. I wasn’t disappointed by the songs at all but the overall execution of the plot is quite meh imo, few questions were left unanswered especially with the kids situation. The movie is unarguably touching tho with its message and theme.

i want to know why this got a 14 minute standing ovation. a beautiful soundtrack and stunning visuals cannot save a half-baked and nonsensical plot. they really should have went the multiple episode route for this one, because everything is too rushed and the reasons they gave for why things are happening are just not plausible.

The film was totally saved by its wonderful soundtracks. However, I found the plot quite sporadic. While suzu was living in a solitary condition(she only had one best friend, she tried to avoid the crowd and sustained a cold relationship with her father), what forced her to attempt to find out the secret of the Beast, the one that she should try to get away from him? Throughout the first part of the movie, I believe that suzu don't have enough altruism to do sth like that. Lastly,do any of you guys think that if shinobu was the beast and he had his own secret and suzu could heal this wound with him, the story would be much better?

The animation was good. The songs were outstanding. Particularly the singing parts were I thought it was Aimer singing at first hehehe. It's pretty good that the movie tackled a lot of recent issues like the disadvantages of SNS, the powerful impact of internet, overcoming challenges and even child abuse. However, because of that, the story was kind of all over the place. And honestly, I don't like the Beauty and the Beast concept. It somehow feels unnecessary. Anyway, it was a beautiful movie in terms of aesthetics but it could have been done better in terms of the story progression.

I agree with that idea! I was even half expecting that the beast would be shinobu. Although maybe they did not chose that option considering that it might be predictable. On another note though, that kid (I forgot his name. Was it kei?!) being the Beast was somehow an unfavorable twist that made the story suffer for me. I am sorry but for me, the story really lacks some certain impact to compliment its wonderful animation and awesome soundtracks.

ngl this was kinda.. lame. story wise. music was great and animstion was just simply amazing. especially the ones for the "U" world so so cool. though the cgi for the real world kinda caught me off guard, but most of it does suit the animation well so it doesn't stick out Too much

but the story.. man it 1/4 it felt like a rip off of beauty and the beast and the other felt like a kid wrote it idfk if this is just me getting high hopes because hosoda directed it and ended up disappointed so im really harsh but the story was sooo ?$?_!_++ man idk it just didnt click with me how they did the magical fantasy-irl drama thing

7/10. Had a good time watching it but it was pretty disjointed at times. Dont know yet if I'd buy it. Music and visuals were great. Last non battle shonen anime movie I saw in theaters was Weathering With You and thus was a hell of a lot better than that. The funniest scene in the movie was when the abusive father comes out at the end walking like a WWE villain. Also the people commenting surprised by the Beauty and the Beast similarities are prob some the slowest people I've seen online. The characters name is Bell and the english title is Belle with a beast being prominently featured in trailers and posters, wtf did you think it was gonna be?

The movie was kinda... meh.
The music was nice.
We got a cool comedy moment with Kamishin and Ruka.

But the plot was lacking in many places.

I thought they were gonna use the popularity to send some nearby volunteers to take care of those kids. Instead of that the MC takes the train and travels across half of Japan all alone. Like, everyone else of that group too busy to join?!
So, she got the abusive parent to back off once, then what?

The songs were amazing and the animation was ok. But there were many flaws too. The whole thing felt really rushed. They were jumping from one scene to another so quickly. Belle and Ryu's development were too fast paced. There were question marks popping over my head when they just randomly started dancing...I wish they followed a bit more slower pace then it would've been more digestible.

Also I didn't quite like the MC and her voice acting. The MC was overreacting in many unnecessary situations, especially when she just randomly started crying after messaging Luka. The voice acting sounded unenthusiastic sometimes and overly dramatic sometimes. But that's understandable since the VA doesn't have experience in voice acting. But her singing is fabulous. I'll admit that her singing gave me goosebumps.

Thought it would be like Beauty and the Beast and that there would be some kinda romance between Belle and Ryu (Suzu and Kei) XD and they were even indirectly implying that by all those moments and love songs. But at the same time it didn't seem like that cuz Suzu was all blushy blushy with Shinobu. That type of mix up confusion kinda annoys me. But that ambiguous confession of Kei was beautiful.

I didn't understand why the abusive father got scared away like he saw some sort of ghost. Was it because Suzu reminded him of this late wife or something?

Overall 7/10

How did this get a standing ovation at Cannes??? Thematically I think this movie is a bit messy, Kei and his subplot comes at the last minute and makes the big "identity of the dragon reveal" have no real meaning. Would have been much better for the movie to cut out Kei (sorry) and develop one of the other characters as the Dragon, prob. either her childhood friend (bruises from protecting the main character as she grew up!) or the father (bruises from how she turned away). Either of those choices would have made the movie much more moving to me.

Yeah... that was confused and disappointing. Definitely nowhere near as good as Summer Wars, Wolf Children, or The Girl Who Lept Through Time.

Honestly, I really, really thought the child whom the mother saved at the beginning would have played a part in all of this. The survivor's guilt + Suzu's hatred for taking her mother away from her. How interesting would have that been?
