It's a mixture of different genres - romance, action, drama, history (done accurately), and even a bit of comedy. (It just lacks sci-fi and robots)

It features one of the best anime protagonists ever, Lady Oscar, a character who is a great well-developed heroine.

It was directed by Osamu Dezaki, one of anime's best directors, and features a great cast, visuals and music.

It's pretty much flawless.

It's a great show, beginning was a little boring but I loved the rest. I really need to rewatch it to remember all the details.

Wouldn't call it the greatest ever made though.

Wow haha, of course I finished this anime just today and this topic has sprung up so soon.

Rose of Versailles easily earned a spot in my favorites as well. However, it always irks me there's some public declaration made that "x anime is the BEST ANIME EVER", even if it's something I really enjoyed and consider a favorite of mine too. Many anime tend to achieve something unique in their respective genres and stories. While it's true, for example, that my only 10s remain to NGE/EoE, I still recognize it's not the BEST anime ever. It's personally the best for me, but I fully acknowledge other anime achieve some great things over NGE.

Also, I don't really think RoV can live with a "comedy" adjective attached to it. Maybe it's just me, but I can't really recall any memorable moments where I at least chuckled. Things got pretty grim as the series went on and never really stopped with that direction.

Who needs romance on a over the top action anime.

On topic: ye Rose of Versailles is pretty great and one of his strong aspects is the historical accuracy. Also it has one of the best ending in the medium alongside Ashita no Joe.

The Sword Art Online may be the most perfect anime ever
It's a mixture of different genres - romance, action, adventure, isekai, and even a bit of harem. (It just lacks sci-fi and robots)

It features one of the best anime protagonists ever, Kirito, a character who is a great hero who develops through the series.

It was directed by Tomohiko Itou, one of anime's best directors, and features a great cast, visuals and music.

It's pretty much flawless.

RoV is a decent anime, but it's by no means perfect.

Issues:
- too much melodrama
- too many sparkles
- caricaturish villains
- Jeanne
- slow-paced in the middle
- not enough cute Oscar and Andre moments
- predictable

She was just the character that annoyed me the most. She caused a lot of the melodrama that made the middle of the show feel so slow for me.

Ah I see. Personally, I found the inclusion of her character in the series to be the most compelling.

For those reasons, I think she's easily the highlight and not really a 'fault' of the series.

It's definitely in my top 5, although it is definitely not perfect. The direction is great, but the screenplay is not perfectly polished. Anyway its flaws are inconsequential because of the great impact and memorability of the series, and Oscar is one of the best mc ever. There aren't many series that had me that much engaged with the story and the characters.

Fair enough. I know that a lot of people love to hate certain characters, but for me if I hate a character to the point that it makes it difficult for me to keep watching, then it's a problem.

You are dead to me.

It doesn't match with the mostly serious tone of the show, though I suppose you could argue that the gradual decrease in the use of sparkles as the show progresses is symbolically relevant.

Yeah, I do argue that. I also think it fits really well as a subversion of all the other period-European shoujo mangas that were popular at the time, keeping the sparkly shouji tone but without the happy ending where the spoilt princess lives happily ever after. The story itself could well have been told in a less fabulous and less bitchy way; all stoic, LotGH-style, but that completely misses the point.

You're incorrect on a more fundamental level though.

There can never be too many sparkles.

It is kind of a famous anime, though it is also vintage 1979-1980 so unless you're into classics it's probably something somewhat obscure. It is licensed in the states by Rightstuf (Nozomi Ent.) though.

I can't get into the show's aesthetic to save my life. 70s anime are just something I'm afraid I'll never get into, even if there are many, many classics to delve into. I don't usually let aesthetics prevent me from watching an anime, but I have to draw the line somewhere, and that line sits somewhere around 1984.

Investment in the characters in respect to Madoka Magica is what held it back from being amazing to me. Interesting story and some neat animation, but... kept feeling like I was missing a connection between myself and the characters' struggles. 12 episodes just seem ineffectively used, and perhaps could had benefited greatly if allotted more episodes.

but madoka methodical pacing and the constant usage of plot twist are probably the best element of the story slowing it down would only hurt the experience even if the character were forgetable

Weeellllll

That's the thing, even with that significant plot twist, it personally didn't impact me since the characters felt as though they weren't able to stand out beyond the story's threaded line. In other words, it just didn't' work for me because they operated like tools in my eyes; difficult to describe. I REALLY wanted to have my feelings evoked, but for some reason, even though I marathoned it, hardly anything stuck.

Sucks because, as I said, story is pretty good, but that alone isn't enough to stand out to me. It definitely wasn't boring, but I'll take a slow burner anytime if it means giving more depth to the characters and then letting the story throw its punches.

Edit: Just noticed we gave it the same score, interesting.

I am aware that people have the right to have different opinions, and that's fine. It's just that I have seen very few anime that IMO as are good and timeless as ROV. It's not a favourite of mine, my tastes lie towards action/adventure/comedy, but respect where it's due.

People should watch the show and see what it's like.

My mom may be the most perfect mother ever.

She's a mixture of different behaviours and moods; sympathetic, angry, etc. (just lacks loving and nurturing).

She represents the best of the lineage on the female side, she may not be all too well-rounded but there's a lot of emotion in there.

She was made by my grandfather and grandmother, as I figure they had flamboyant characteristics.

She raised me.
