That was well, trash to be completely honest. We created and resolved at least three different big problems each within minutes continuing the typical shoddy pacing. Not to mention the disgusting creatures that were Morty's family. I know they weren't in the 2001 version and if they were in the manga then the 2001 version was better for cutting them. Also god damn I have to thank 4kids for once for not having giant hairy tanuki balls. Ponchi and Conchi were always a bad Ren and Stimpy knockoff but there's some things that just don't belong in a show like this. And Morty being clamped by tanuki balls and pissed on by a fox spirit is definitely in that category.

After the disappointing fight against faust this was a little better but the rush is still there, they ruined manta and yoh fight, solving the problem in the same chapter made it look silly...

I was hoping that Manta was going to leave, but I knew that was wishful thinking.

Another boring episode, this time it was training for Yoh’s fight with the Chinese kid. Something I don’t understand is my Yoh’s grandpa never taught him about the Over Soul technique, but I guess he taught it to the premonition girl with the spirit that has fat fucking nuts? What the hell was that about anyways?

Also, why the hell would the pompadour guy go to America to learn how to make sushi when he is literally in Japan?

The next fight might end up being the make-or-break point for me in this anime.

Tamao a cutie as always, can't say the same about her spirits though, disgusting.
Yoh's training felt somehow rushed though I don't think there was more to it.
Ren was pretty cool in the end.

To be fair, the Oversoul technique not being taught really makes no sense. I mean, maybe Yoh just didn't want to learn it from laziness and only got the base element, but it really makes no sense at all why Tao Ren didn't use it in their first fight, and only used Hyoi Gattai.
That's the biggest part that makes really no sense.
Life can be cruel and unfair. At worst it can traumatize and cripple you. The desire for wanting things to return to the way they were can cost everything and changes nothing. The best way is to keep moving forward, struggle on.
Anger can be powerful but can only get you so far. Let people into your life even if some of them leave you in time.

imo it gets a 4-5/10. i do like the main character, but the rest of the cast + the plot + the pacing are either mid or bad.

There is a reason why fodder tier Shamans that can't even produce an oversoul are tested before the pre-eliminaries, because anyone who can figure it out, create and maintain an oversoul despite a threat of death - has the wisdom that makes them capable enough to potentially matter - despite the fact they are trash.

Both Tao and Asakura families are some of the most powerful shamanic families with long history. We can very reasonably assume they know about the testing process, and they believe in the value of the test.

Basically the screening is the last chance for their heirs to be spared from having to participate, and most likely suffering an excruciating death later in the tournament.

As Yohmei - if Yoh doesn't want to train, he won't force him to be a shaman and die a meaningless death - he must WANT to participate more than he wants to live.

On the Tao end, they may be full of haye and spite, but one thing they do care about is their family. Ren was taught excellely producing a perfect oversoul on his first attempt was a result of constant training that was preparing him to master an oversoul - but should he fail the test - they'll just wait another 500 years.

Consider than En is one of the strongest characters in universe, and he still doesn't participate in the tournament, that's how unlikely it is to survive the tournament.

So yeah TL:DR - they weren't taught oversoul, so that they could participate in the the entry test, which could save their lives, or at least confirm whether they want to die trying

Yoh coming out of that cavern, still being the same was so great. A little focus on Ren's background so that's good. Now for the next fight, should be a big one.

I didn't understand a lot of what you wrote, sorry.

I get the part with how Yoh's family deals with training, but I still don't understand the part with the Tao's or Ren.

So if you have an Oversoul, you don't even get tested for participation? See, I was thinking that everyone got a test to see if they could 'damage' the instructor, vs whether or not they would have to use an Oversoul.

I mean, yours makes more sense, but now I still don't know where Ren decided to learn it if he didn't before. Yoh got it during his match, but Ren apparently had already mastered it in time to flat out kill the one who tested him. So how and why did he come upon it?

Shaman King 2021 score:6.99

What's wrong with peoples

How does any of that relate to episode 8 of Shaman King again? ^^'

Give it time for the story to get going, and the score will go up. I would say that Shaman King would never stand on top of the scores among the average viewers, but with this adaptation rushing or cutting a lot of the things that make Shaman King, it's actually likely it will be highly rated.

I really doubt it could ever compete with Demon Slayer though. Regardless of anyone's individual opinion, Demon Slayer has made history and made what is likely to stay as unbeatable sales record.
the score has gone down a lot pal

No, no. Only the people the abilities of whom are in question get tested before the pre-elimaries

There are only 10 officiants to test thousands of people that want to be shaman king. And absolute most of them fails.

Silva didn't get to testing Yoh until night time and even there his sacred spirits were insisting that they do not have 10 minutes to spare on testing a kid that uses a human spirit and that they should just go. Testing well established shamans is not only not worth the time, it is also dangerous - they said that they never expected a death this early on - because people that were tested weren't supposed to be strong enough to be dangerous.

If they tested everyone the officiants be dropping like flies. Don't get me wrong, they aren't weak - actually they have to be above average if they are tasked with overseeing the tournament - but if any of them could survive against Shaman King candidates - they wouldn't be judges, they'd be participants ^^'

There is no way Ren was stronger than Chrom, but in Shaman King's power system numbers mean very little.

We have to assume every test looks roughly the same, they show the power of oversoul, they wait for the opponent to create an oversoul of their own, and when that happens they scare them with a scary looking attack.

The point is oversoul is maintained by pure concentration, telling them it's a life or death scenario weeds out people that buckle under pressure - but the attack itself is not meant to kill. I'm sure it could happen but that would be an accident, not on purpose.

If they really went all out they'd just kill all participants ^^'

And there comes Ren, who was unknowingly trained his whole life for this moment. He not only creates an oversoul, but it's perfectly contained, no overflow whatsoever, what's more he's leagues stronger than all the other fodder tiers, he sliced through the blast with ease - if Yoh could have went through, for Ren this was like butter, and the hit landed full strength into Chrom, who did not have anything to protect him. Power levels only decide how strong the oversoul is, being stabbed through the chest will kill you, no matter who you are. And even though the officiants use oversoul to enhance their physical abilities, the totem pole requires it to be disengaged.

Aaah, thank you, this makes a lot more sense now. Wish they had explained it a bit better, since I don't think it was covered that well even in the manga.

You should never waste time on the original. It's not Shaman King.

I'd say just read the manga, but contrary to popular belief, this series is actually following the manga quite closely too, so you'll probably have the same issues until it really starts to get going.

So overall, give it some time.

I thought that was Manta having a bad dream at the beginning when he saw Yoh in the hospital room.

The Pompadour is growing back lol...only to lose it...unlucky

Those two um...disturbing spirits were just pranking Tamao giving her fake prophecies about Manta.

Yoh just "stopped thinking" (hi Kars)

I understand trying to fit in as much "downtime" as possible into one episode to allow for fights and dramatic storytelling scenes more time to breath..
But the training arcs are an integral part to the shonen experience..
I never read the manga so I have no idea if the 7days/7nights is a good training arc or not, but it feels cheap when direction skips out on these things that might not feel as immediately impactful - like there is no real payoff, Yoh walks into a cave and less than 20 minutes later he has an evolved Over Soul.

I get it, but I don't like it..

To be real, Ponchi and Conchi but mostly Ponchi are kind of the reason I watched this show and continued to watch it. My previous knowledge of the characters were limited to their bio on TVTropes and a few photos, which I looked at years ago. I'm a big fan of tanuki (and kitsune) so I wanted to see what they were like in this series. Honestly, I was scared they would, um, neuter Ponchi's endowments, because that's apparently what they manually did in the English release of the original manga. Not only was the content (to my relief) left untouched, it was also (to my shock) much crasser than I had been imagining.
For starters, I remembered the two as wearing matching underpants. But in this episode, Ponchi defaultly just lets the nuts hang. And they aren't simplistic furry nuts, but rather humanlike - partly hairy, occasionally veiny?? - like how a teenager would doodle them. Not to mention the fact that their idea of introductions involves (a) kicking you in the balls (b) constricting you with their balls, or (c) insert Mario pissing joke here. I've heard of "cock and ball torture" but this is ridiculous. We have gone beyond the realm of "you see, Japan isn't as horrified at the sight of fictional genitalia in certain situations..." and entered a deliberate Pee Pee Fart Zone. It's like I accidentally switched the show to Panty & Stocking halfway through the episode.

(Also, when they mentioned Faust had advanced to the next round, I was surprised... I thought Ren murdered him with that explosion)

Before I even noticed the episode had ended. and not in a good way.
Too much was ruined by rushing the story and character development.

It came to the point where I don't know if i ever care for the characters or not.
and i mean by that, that slice of life and character development should have much more time. but this episode just rushed it through. i didn't felt manta pain, tamako character, or yoh feeling strong by the end of the episode.
i still stand hold for the fact that fmab did much better job on pacing the first 12 episodes than this.  and fma chapters are much longer.
