I hope the ultra fast pace is ending with this episode like some are saying. Some scenes simply did not receive the weight they deserved, it was like a slideshow of events with no artistic emphasis. Even Reiner's suicide attempt felt off and not that impactful.

Thank god the animation wasn't as weird as episode 2.

I had a problem with how fast everything went by. I really wish they paused a little to let the dialogues and the emotions sink in. With action scenes, you can show action after action without a pause, but for character scenes, you need proper pauses.

What happened to the voice acting? The characters sounded so weird! Especially baby Reiner. Eren, Armin and Kenny were the only ones who sounded right.

The directing so far isn't very good. I don't know why they changed the directors, but I wish they got someone more competent. I looked up the current directors, and they haven't made anything that is better than mildly good, which isn't enough for SnK.

Different voice actor for child Reiner, Eren has gotten older so his voice actor had to change his voice tone so the older Eren sounds a bit more mature? He said it in his interview that it was a bit difficult at first.

Hope that answers your question.

Also its a different studio so the director for Wit studio can't be the director for snk since its under Mappa now.

Ngl pacing goes real fast , it's almost like busy switching from one scene right after another one and l couldn't really immerse myself into the moments..storytelling is all over the place due to the cut.....but understandable it's due to the16 episodes limit, the rest is all good, Mappa delivered well on the animation side, i love how they introduce the warriors profile and their titan abilities.

However it's a shame the pacing had to be sacrificed here, still they managed to cram all the important content in this episode, kudos to the scriptwriter. Hopefully the remaining episodes can have normal pacing as those little details of character development and storytelling matter the most to me in AOT series...

Overall this episode really feels like a 'flash'-back lolll

really good episode seeing their side growing up really puts stuff in to perspective even more and that traitor scene from Season 2 really hits you fucking different with Reiner's lines i'm still team fuck him but it hurts a little ya know.

also wild our boy is just here lurking, the twist of Eren doing the same shit Reiner did back then supporting his enemy is great

Younger Reiner had a different voice actor? That makes sense. The voice was awful.
Eren's voice was good. I trust Kaji Yuuki with Eren. He is perfect for the role.

I know about the studio change, but I wish the new director was someone who knew what they were doing.

The same guy they were talking to that said he escaped from the titans leaving three kids behind.

If you're asking who exactly is he, just some guy Bertholdt based his fake backstory from.

In the previous seasons, I’ve hated Reiner so much.. I cant believe i’m saying this but im starting to love him, I’ve always painted him as a villian, but after seeing these three episodes I can undertand where he’s coming from. He’s also sucha a complex and well written character! Can’t wait to see what’s coming next. (Also that eren reveal at the end was soo goodd)

Was nice seeing the past from Annie's, Reiner's and Berthold's point of view, also getting to see Kenny! Annie made a dangerous encounter back then.

Seems like someone is doing a counter infiltration and preparing a counter Attack.

Eren's reveal makes everything wrong with this episode forgiveable. Eventhough there is nothing solid mistake except Reiner's suicide attempt scene lacks of depth due to duration.

Now back to Eren's reveal, honestly i love every single shit about it. Animation, Falco, Eren, and the dub just hits different.

Cant wait for next eps.

Yes. Yes, we can. Specially since he held the same beliefs for a long time and, until proven otherwise, he still does.
Hmm yeah I am probably biased since I've read the manga. But I still find it hard to hate him since his environnement lead him to that, yes he could have done better, way better, but his whole family and everyone around him thinks like that. He wanted to save the world, to make his mom proud and to live with his father. I personnaly don't think I would do better. Him betraying marh also equals to his death and to the death of his whole family, what could he do ?

also sorry for bad english, it's not my origial language.

I completely agree! I think that's one point of showing his backstory - to show that not everything is so black and white. It's hard to truly hate Reiner and the others, when this is the situation they're in. But I agree with the other manga readers...it's unfortunate they cut out some scenes

Great episode. We finally got to see the other side of the story and what actually happened to Reiner, Annie, Berthold and Co when they were children. There must be a reason why Marley picks children to become the next Titan generation.

Hmm so that's how Marcel died and Ymir became the Jaw titan. Imagine if Reiner, Annie and Berthold broke up their mission. I wonder what would have happened then. There's still the question, where was Annie when Berthold and Reiner attacked the wall? Did anything happen before? Seems like Reiner and Annie didn't have the best relationship.

With this season I really began to like Reiner more and more. The suicide attempt of him was bit scary but I guess his time hasn't come yet.

I liked his little speech. That's exactly how he and Reiner felt all that time. But now actually knowing it is him, how did he get there? And what exactly is his next move? Where are Levi, Mikasa and Co? So many questions. Can't wait to get the answers.

What an episode! Finally, after all these years, we got to know how the attack started.
Only if Marcel was alive...maybe things could have been different, he probably was the only one who could control Reiner's anger, and it seems that none of them besides Reiner, wanted to fight the Eldians...
Now guess what, Reiner is the one who plans to swap sides, lmao
Also, Berthold was probably the most normal out of them 3, but he never stood a chance against them, they were stronger mentally.

I do wonder who's that guy who got injured and if is he relevant.

It seems there is still quite a lot of development that has to happen before we see Eren and others.
Another week, another wait.

It was actually pretty good. Stil kinda fast paced but I understand the need to go asap to the action scenes. CG Reiner looks just as weird as ever... too bad Mappa couldn’t match Wit’s style on the flashback, the change of studio is too obvious and distracting. Overall, a good chapter

i just watched the episode and it didn't felt rushed but there were a lot of missing scenes. I didn't really get the point of the Kenny scene lol. If i'm not mistaken it's just to show that Annie was busting her ass working while reiner and bert were busy making friends. Was the hobo's speech cut? i felt like it could have been better with a better soundtrack.

great episode though holy shit. there was just so much to ingest.

Annie was doing detective work in the capital in an attempt to find information that would lead them to the person with the founding titan. She ran into Kenny/or was purposely following him and was caught. So she made some BS excuse as to why she was tailing him so that she could get away. He didn't buy it so she attacked him and escaped.

I agree with @keragamming here, I was depressed because of the animation quality last week, but this week is ok. I really prefer stiff traditional animation to choppy rotoscoped animation. This week was not outstanding, but my eyes didn't bleed. I think we've got a good idea what to expect from the season overall. Ihmo, not bad enough to drop, not good enough compared to previous seasons.

Did anyone keep count of WIT's footage reused in this episode? Am I right in thinking that this scene with Eren before the opening is from season 1, and also 2D Female and Colossal titans in Shiganshina?

I also did't really get the meaning of the episode with Kenny.

Overall it was okay. I didn't feel much emotionally to be honest, but it was not terrible. I'm not particularly sad about the cut parts.

Somebody asked if Reiners flashbacks omitted from the previous episode were shown. The answer is no, and I don't think we'll get them.

It was nice to see again the fierce green eyes of a certain hobo.

7/10

The scene before the opening is form Mappa, the female titan scene is also from Mappa, the Collosal titan scene is reuse scene from Wit.

This scene is also from Mappa, which impress me because it looks really like Wit studio version, the only reason why I know it is not because in season 1 it was thick black outlines and this one doesn't have it.

@eXtripa69

The very fact that they put the Eren scene in the end is for the big reveal, I know chapter 98 would have been the better reveal, but anime only would have figure out that its Eren in this scene, which I think why they choose to put this scene at the end.

I read the manga and I knew it was Eren before we even got to this scene, I think even with a different voice actor anime only would have still notice, as I have watch a few live reaction and they said they realize it was Eren 100% when they saw his eyes.

Yea animation in this episode is definetly better and it didnt have many static shots compared to many of wit's episodes and i like how close it looked to WIT's art style this episode props to that, so i think we cant really complain about animation in this episode since colossal looked so damn good during the showcase scene

Man a lot of enjoyable moments this episode. The first half consists of Reiner's flashback from his training days to his struggles in the Paradis island. I love the fact that if Ymir didn't showed up, we wouldn't have reached this point.

So Annie and Reiner were never really that friendly with each other, considering how our man is pretty flimsy and prideful (like Eren). And the fact that Annie met with Kenny before...it was not that important but hey nice trivia. Looks like after all the mistakes and regrets he had made all his life, we get a very nice and shocking shot of Reiner putting a gun in his mouth. GODDAMN.

And on the latter half, we see Falco talking with a certain man who have a long hair, bandages for an eyepatch and an amputated leg. It looks like the man shows sympathy on Falco's situation, and advises him to live life as a good man...(I don't want to kill you in the future, so you better stay the fuck down). We know who's that man at this point, IT'S OUR BOI EREN.

Reiner looking at Annie dead straight is so scary. Geez Annie you're really going to boil his nerves.

voice acting was good, animation was weak if they are going on animation like these future episodes action scenes are going to look weird. also did they skip some scenes or chapters?

Overall great episode, although I feel like we're losing that original season one AoT energy... it's a bit more.. heavy and tired in comparison to the usual angst and screaming...it's been a long time since someone's been eaten LOL.

Sidenote, I definitely spent a good ten minutes googling the VA of Eren because it sounded like Eren until they showed his face. Wow... I guess time is real. (But also where's Mikasa and the others?)

So Reiner is having major PTSD/regret to sending his friends off to go die, but to be fair -- even though they were together since they were young -- Friend is a bit of an overstatement. If anything, he was closer to those in the wall vs those he traveled with. He's starting to remind me of a more washed out Erwin in his latter days of regret.

Ironic jaws got eaten by a pair of jaws.
