you don't use your golf clubs as emergency spoons some times?

The grassy residue + metallic taste is really just a perfect addition for some mashed potatoes in a pinch, like when you run out of spoons for your guests on Thanksgiving.

This time Satoko is more confident in herself because she took the shot herself. So, I think Keichi won't try to do the things he might have done... However, the ending will be sad still imo.

Higurashi subs are not even that bad if you compare to other shit released by funimation in this and previous seasons.

I could understand if like the VN had a precedent for using that but I guess not. It's just so awkward i had to do a double take. Even the translation on Hidive for the original series leaves it intact as Nii-nii. And it's just gonna get worse bc we all know Satoko's gonna be saying it more

I am so happy to see Irie, I really missed him.

Bought the LN but still haven't played them. Question for anyone who played them:

Finally, Satoshi was mentioned. I love him so much, it isn't even normal.

Okay but this time around Rika is seriously mad at Keiichi, isn't? LMAO. It makes me laugh so much.

I'm glad that Satoshi exists! The constant references to him made everything in the original much scarier.

Also, the King of Maids is here, and his introduction is still creepy af. Lovely seeing Shion being so cute with Satoko, I really appreciate that.

Satoko and Keiichi spending time together was so sweet. I like that they added the second day where Satoko and Keiichi go shopping and eat together. It made their bond even stronger.

Funimation subs have hit a new low with the translations of "Nii-nii" as "Big Brudder" and "Nee-nee" as "Big Shister". It literally made my eyes feel in pain, something that only the fight in ep. 4 had managed. Why not just call them "nii-nii" and "nee-nee"? Or if they do feel the need to translate, at least "big bro" and "big sis" would have felt better.

That's why I'm using fansubs though.
Just saying, these subs are not really that bad if you compare it to anything done by aniplex or almost all other series done by funi (I'm not even mentioning netflix because it's an ultimate abomination).

Wait, fansubs are still a think for airing shows?

I don't like the Nii-Nii to "Big Brudder" translation too but if anyone is interested in the translator's reasoning,

Many characters tease her about that not just Takano, but she just can't tell the difference between the two, it's common in children.
If she really was colorblind then it would've been mentioned in one of the many Higu arcs.

Thanks, I understand the reasoning. And, I don’t like it a bit. I prefer Nii-Nii too.

FWIW The Latin community makes similar translations while technically correct are just awful. The people watching Higurashi aren’t fools or xenophobic, they can handle reading Nii Nii.

What's weird is that she acknowledges it being not-so-good-translation but insists it's the better translation and anyone that uses Nii-Nii doesn't know how translate lol (i don't really care but it's just cringy tbh, Nii-Nii was cute)

Frankly the reasoning is retarded. I watched the OG Higurashi in 2009 when all japanese words still sounded the same to me and I could tell that ni-ni was Satoko's baby way of saying big brother. It wasnt rocket science in japanese.

So either I am really intelligent or that person must get off her high horse and stop acting as if viewers are fucking retarded, asking for internet rewards for her "hard work". In the adult world it doesnt matter how hard you worked if the final product is shit.

And nii nii and nee nee arent the only bullshit translations. Why are there so many liberal, meme like translations?

And okay, lets translate the damn thing....why was bro bro, which is a direct translation(at least based on sound), bad? In what way is Big Bruder better?

Is it that big of a deal? Regardless of how this translator chose to localize the term, you know what nii-nii means, and she still says nii-nii, and you can still choose to use nii-nii yourself. The choice to make it Big Brudder didn't make the scene wrong or hard to understand so I don't really see the issue outside of nitpicking? [[ not trying to start a fight about it, just my two cents ]]

It annoys me when I see translations like that.I read subs so when i see bs like that it is just painful to watch. And I know that if they make such a stupid choice for something like this how can anyone assure me that the rest of the translation isnt just as garbage? And it is garbage in many places.

I think that isn't the same thing though - making a localization choice for something like "nii-nii" isn't the same as a bad or wrong translation.

Actually it is a fairly medium sized deal to me. Part of the reason I watch anime is to get a taste of another culture and world. How would you feel if the used the same argument to replace Satako with Judy or maybe Hinamizawa with East Bumblefck or Tokyo with New York or Manila. There’s no stopping where this line of reasoning goes.

I get what you are saying, but the goal of Funimation I assume is to have as many people be able to access this anime without needing to know or understand any of the culturally specific aspects of the Japanese language. It's kind of the trend of the industry.

It feels like they stick to Japanese names more lately, but iconic series like Pokemon made up new names for the Eng ver.

There where many choices that werent this bad. A localization can be bad.

And it is the same when they seem to treat everything as localization. Lets add memes that everyone can understand. Lets make Mion give an answer that has nothing to do with the context. Lets add words and names that werent said. Lets make Satoko talk like a different person.

I dont understand why a more straightforward translation is such an alien concept.

I think "I don't know" is better but it's not really a big deal.
The problem is when they fuck up something from the mystery like:

from episode 3 (they fixed it some time later but it was like that when the episode came out)
she also translated Reina as Rena in that same episode (Ooishi called her Reina while he was on the phone with Keiichi).

Yeah, these types of omissions or mistakes I can understand being upset about (I think also episode 2 weirdly translates one of Rika's lines to Hanyuu). I'm mainly trying to just make a point that errors like these aren't the same as localization choices that don't change the overall meaning.

I caught both of those and assumed they were clues to this alternate universe. Grrr now that it’s revealed they were translation errors by someone who doesn’t know the franchise.

Satoko's arc is here, along with the mention of Satoshi, and the appearance of that fucking bastard Teppei.

Really chill episode overall, felt more like an introduction of what this arc is about and wich characters will have a role in here. Nothing much to say about it.

Ending tho, Rena was about to go psycho mode with the Oyashiro-sama's curse mention, and Satoko basically entered hell. Waiting for next week!

The more I watch the more excited I get to spot the small differences from OG material. Correct me if I’m wrong but it the major changes I saw were
1. Keiichi’s parents coming home early
2. Shion being a big sister to Satoko early on
3.Rena not having a major break down about the curse?(this one I don’t remember much)

But I’m super curious about how this arc plays out. I’m hoping I enjoy it because honestly Satoko is my least favorite character so her arc bored me majority of the time.
