23feanor said: Sounds ok for me, and I need no change just wait for 8 days until I watch ep2 :) I'll need to pick a "serious show" now, for which I had scheduled Noein. But np, I have a lot of heavy stuff on backlog that'll probably never make it to group watch candidate anyway.inim said: 23feanor said: inim said: 23feanor said: From those 3, in order:inim said: @23feanor @filifjonkan Durarara!! is coming to an end soon, and so are my current watches. So it's time to pick my poison for this month and I'd like to harmonize the group watch with the other picks. I basically always want a "hard and serious" watch complemented by an "easy, episodic, ideally dubbed" watch. And the third slot goes to some guilty pleasure or hype of the week. So, my suggestion would be to simply use the runner up from last discussion, Noein: Mou Hitori no Kimi e (2005). As far as I understand the synopsis, this is a more serious (but not dark) mystery (but not overly confusing) show centered around time travel paradoxes. I'd pick a light show as complement in my 2ndary pick then. How about you, that one? My top picks would be Macross, Kobato or Run With the Wind, but as always I'm easy. Noein has come to Funimation this week I noticed, but not the eng dub yet. 1) Macross (because I really want a 1982 show to complete a badge) 2) Run with the Wind (because I heared a lot of great things, like Ping Pong the Animation and not really "only" a sports anime 3) Kobato (not now, I just picked a "light" one in https://myanimelist.net/anime/490/Paniponi_Dash It's a bit like Teacher Despair x Hidamari Sketch x Lucky Star, btw, CGDCT comedy from Shaft) I've wanted to try Macross for a while and would love to pick it up next. Also DtB and D! have felt a bit 'heavy' for me (DtB in a good way, really enjoyed that franchise) so wanted something a bit lighter and Noein seems a bit complicated, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it. So my pick would be Macross but am happy to go with Noein or Run with the Wind (same for me have heard great things about it plus there's an eng dub). @filifjonkan are you ok with Macross, or would you prefer Noein or Run with the Wind? @inim Paniponi Dash, it looks interesting, not sure why i haven't added it to my ptw list as if it's anything like Hidamari Sketch from Shaft I'll love it. Will be interested to see what you think. I've also started Azumanga Daioh, another school comedy that is a cgdct show but at the same time it isn't, it's like Nichijou in that it is just pure comedy. I can't stop watching it. Suggestion: Just peek into episode 1 and make an assessment. Even if we pick Macross now, that's a good next pick after and I could halt the watch. It's light and comedic and still interesting for an old elitist fart like myself. So that is perfect material for the group watch, imho. If you're talking about watching PaniPoni next that sounds great. I checked out a few trailers and love the look of it. I've already added it to my ptw list (recently included the priority function and it goes straight in as a high priority) and it's available in eng dub on Funimation. So maybe watch PaniPoni next and Macross after that (and Noein 3rd)? Does that sound ok @inim and @filifjonkan |

Hello! I wonder if it is the PaniPoni with 48 episodes that is up for a group-watch? @23feanor |

@inim I was just browsing through my list and wondered what your take on the Kingdom series is? I checked your list and can't see it on either your completed or ptw list. I've always quite liked the stories concerning the Warring Kingdoms in China and after the series came to Funimation last week (although the eng dub still hasn't been added yet) I decided to add it. Obviously we're set for shows to watch for a while, but wanted to get your take on it as it may be a good show for a group watch. Another show i saw on your ptw list on high priority is Parasite the Maxim. I started this on Netflix last year and it's currently on hold on ep 8, so I'd be up for picking this back up at some point in the future if filifjonkan is on board. |

Hello @23feanor! Thanks for considering my opinion, much appreciated! I would like to watch Kingdom, since I think history is interesting. Even if it is an anime... For "Parasyte the Maxim"; I have already watched that series and I liked it a lot. |

After writing this message I checked your list and saw you had watched it so we can leave Parasyte, it wouldn't be much fun for you re-watching something again. Also i can't actually remember much of what happened so would have to re-watch the whole thing. I love certain historical shows, ancient China and the warring kingdoms is one setting i never seem to get bored of. Hope you had a nice birthday ^_^ |

I know it's tagged seinen on MAL, but almost every review mentions "bad shounen writing". My sensory system told me to stay away, and in case I really want an ancient China anime, watch Saiunkoku instead.@inim I was just browsing through my list and wondered what your take on the Kingdom series is? It's 52 eps and by that standard pretty long, but not out of reach. I'm burning down a few long anime next, so that would fit in. Ongoing watch is https://myanimelist.net/anime/427/Kaleido_Star and it's an easy one and very positive and entertaining. Basically shoujo ganbatte with medlodrama and a super-nice female MC set in the circus world. Next 50+ eps candidate for me is https://myanimelist.net/anime/122/Full_Moon_wo_Sagashite which I got raving recommendations for from totally different type of watchers, including AnimeSnob and an actual female German shoujo fan I know in real life. It's her favorite of all time. It's a tragedy at heart, i.e. about a fatally ill girl's last stand and wish. So it may be too sad for the group. OTOH, it's shoujo and by that virtue not "hard", just emotional (I hope). Within the "history 50+ eps epics similar to FY" complex, I see these anidb ratings. As you know, I trust anidb a lot more than MAL as it's audience is more critical and older. https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=87 Fushigi Yuugi == 5.91 Saiunkoku Monogatari == 7.77 Kingdom = 6.98 Tenkuu no Escaflowne == 7.05 (watched) Akatsuki no Yona = 7.07 (watched) Juuni Kokuki == 8.28 (watched) Escaflowne and Juuni are 7 and 8 in my ratings as well, I didn't like Yona that much it's 5/10 for me. The risk I see is that FY is also a reverse harem and that may be a problem. In any case I see fewer problems than for Kingdom. |

There's also an eng dub, which is a big plus for me. I'm thinking of starting Yona next and read your review ("shoujo version of 12 kingdoms"). 12 Kingdoms is another title i want to tackle myself this coming winter. 23feanor said: I'd call 12 Kingdoms soft shoujo by itself, it just lacks the reverse harem Yona and Fushigi Yuugi have / seem to have. The MC still is a strong female, and the way it tells the story is closer to shoujo / emotions / interpersonal relations than to battles, competition and fights as in seinen/shounen. Sainkoku seems to be a good compromise, count me in whenever we schedule it.inim said: 23feanor said: inim said: 23feanor said: There are multiple reasons why KIngdom isn't one PTW. You should really give priority to that one, it's "just" the best medieval fantasy world (Chinese even!) type isekai ever made ... 12K takes a handful of episodes in the "real world" before the heroine is on her track and the world building in the fantasy world can start, don't give up too early. The Macross thread is already up but I'll link you as well ^_^ |

Despite my constant bitching about suspension of disbelief requirement, I find myself liking Macross quite a lot. So I've checked the options to have some more of it, and decided that Macross 7 (49 eps) is skipable. The 3rd season, Macross F(rontier) however has the highest rating of the whole franchise and is a mere 25 eps long. I don't feel skipping is a problem with a franchise of this epic proportions, the seasons take place decades apart and have fresh 16 year old protagonists each. This is very similar to the Gundam universe, different seasons, OVA and movies are all linked by the universe and it's shared history, but their stories and cast are not dependent. Rationale: https://anidb.net/anime/?adb.search=Macross&noalias=1&orderby.name=1.1&orderby.rating=0.2 S1 = 7.64 S2 = 5.03 S3 = 7.78 S4 = 4.75 The top 3 of the franchise are by a wide margin: Frontier, Superdimensional Fortress and Zero. Along with their respective movies, prequels and sequels. So @23feanor and @filifjonkan how about more space idols? Doesn't ave to be our next watch (that's Noein afaik), but I would save Macross F for the group watch if interest exists. |

Here's my suggestion for "more Macross" in baby steps. The 1982 series has two extras produced as direct sequels. https://myanimelist.net/anime/1089/Macross__Do_You_Remember_Love (DYRL, 1984) https://myanimelist.net/anime/1504/Macross_Flash_Back_2012 (1987) FB2012 is a 30 minute fictional concert and AMV show of Minmei songs based on TV and DYRL footage. It also has a newly animated last scene of the TV show. DYRL is widely considered one of the best 80s movies and retells the TV show with minor modifications and modified ending. Then there is the direct sequel OVA, set 35 years after Macross TV. https://myanimelist.net/anime/474/Macross_Plus (1997) M+ has 4 double length episodes and a good rating. The characters are different from the TV and DYRL. Yea, no more Minmei pain. => Suggestion As @23feanor suggested, I'd say we make DYRL and Macross Zero optional watches outside the group. I'll rewatch DYRL anyway. Then we can continue for 5 more days with FB2012 (30 min) 4x M+ (40 min each) After that we have seen what a sequel setting looks and feels like, and can move on to either Macross F (25 eps) or Noein. I'm open for alternatives, yet I'd like to do Noein sooner than later because I "need" 2005 anime for my badge addiction. |

@inim i thought i wanted more Macross, and i do, but after this last arc I'm not sure I'll be able to stomach any more Minmei and her singing. I'm honestly waking up in the middle of the night with "Kyun Kyun" from My Boyfriend is a Pilot playing and Minmei saying "Hikaru" in that voice of hers. The characters have firmly gotten inside my head (a bit like Utena) and after we finish Macross I'll be glad of the break from thinking about Minmei, Misa and Hikaru. I would like to watch the movies DYRL someday but think i need a break from the love triangle. We could watch the Macross Plus eps and then move onto Noein and plan to watch Macross F at a later date as I'd like to see more Macross, I've just had an overload of Minmei, Hikaru and Misa. Would that be ok? Also @filifjonkan what are your thoughts? |

@inim Happy to join and, yes, it appears as though we are very much in line with some of our shared interests. Interestingly, one of my all-time favorite AMVs is for Casshern Sins, and it's one of the main reasons I want to pick up the series (wish my backlog wasn't so massive...) As for this list, among them, I'd be most interested in The Ambition of Oda Nobuna, Nadia: Secret of Blue Water, Kobato. Kokoro Connect and Joshiraku. I hadn't heard of most of these, but the first two especially sound intriguing, and I've been meaning to get to Kokoro Connect one of these days (lower priority). As for this list, among them, I'd be most interested in The Ambition of Oda Nobuna, Nadia: Secret of Blue Water, Kobato. Kokoro Connect and Joshiraku. I hadn't heard of most of these, but the first two especially sound intriguing, and I've been meaning to get to Kokoro Connect one of these days (lower priority). @inim @whiteflame55 I'd been looking at Fruits Basket again recently and something I wouldn't mind picking up after Noein if that's ok with you both and @filifjonkan? I've heard of Casshern Sins, but don't know much about it. Will check out some trailers but I'm always up for checking out something different that I haven't seen or heard of (Darker Than Black was amazing and a franchise i didn't expect to like as much as i did). As @inim said, would be great to have another watcher along |

Brief note on "backlog". When I started to explore anime a few years ago, I've picked a very systematic approach, watching critics' lists top to bottom. With today's experience, that were a lot of 10-8/10s in very short time and without means to compare. Yet most really influential classics are "completed" by a previous version of myself. If you guys agree on some S-tier title, I'd use the opportunity for a rewatch. E.g. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu or Planetes would be examples of the type of show I talk about, pretty much all shows on https://anime.jhiday.net/hof/challenge/criticsConnoisseurs?user=inim#challengeItems |

I'm rather scattershot in getting through my backlog. I'm at the point where I'm fine with that, though. Finding ways to determine which series/movies to prioritize by my own metrics, which have largely worked out. |

After Noein a lighter show may be in order, and Fruits Basket (2019) sounds like the perfect pick if it's on all our ptw lists. |

Hi everyone! I'm new to the club but group watchalongs sound like great fun! I'm more into romance and horror, but if something sounds good I'll watch it no matter the genre. I have a few suggestions for shows that have really blown me away that I think people would like: Gakkougurashi Flip Flappers Mysterious Girlfriend X Be VERY careful with Gakkougurashi spoilers, it's very easy to get one big thing spoiled, it happened to me just by scrolling past the reviews, and wish it didn't. Nazo No Kanojo X/Mysterious Girlfriend X is a bit infamous for it's gross out plot device, but the romance here is legendary imo. These are my recommendations but as I said, I'm down to watch most things. |

Hello!! I would like to watch Fruits Basket )2019) as it looks like a fine series, at least to me and my taste. I have unfortunately watched many of the other suggestions. @23feanor I was also wondering if you are any ongoing series at the moment? Also, I noticed that the storm in England was called Arwen..isn't that Elronds the half-elf daughter in LOTR? Take care, minna-san!! |

Yes Arwen is Elronds daughter and one of the main female characters in LoTR, the movies actually gave a larger starring role to Arwen than she has in the books, where she only makes a couple of minor appearances. I've spent the day watching a bunch of OVA's which was quite fun, You're Under Arrest in particular. I'm about to start Baccano and then 12 Kingdoms. |

If, or when, you start watching the Taiho Shichau zo (TV) series don't be to disappointed if the first 4 episodes seem like re-runs. For some reason, many of the groups subbing the series group the OAV in as the first 4 episodes of the series. Partly because the OAV were the pilot episodes for the series. Sadly, the quality of the next 47 episodes were not as good as the first 4 because of this. Not to unusual really, but I thought you should have a heads-up. If you do watch the series, the writing doesn't suffer from the continuation of the OAV, just the animation, so it's still a good watch. Enjoy! |

It depends who did it and how they got the subs. I really hate clunky bitmap subs on some older releases (the ones that are usually an ugly yellow), which were ripped off cheap DVD versions. |

Ah ok, i usually watch the english dub so subs aren't an issue. The eng dub for the OVA was pretty decent. I meant both the subbing groups and the animation. Depending on the group doing the subtitles some of the groups package the series with the OAV as the first four episodes of the first season. Others package them separately. I usually try to get the ones that package their subs in MKV format. That way you usually get a choice in whether to watch with or without subtitles. I'm glad you enjoy the English dub and feel they did a pretty good job. To many times I have watched a series on a DVD listening to the dub and with subs turned on and the subs don't match up with what the dubbers say. The Tenchi Muyo series comes to mind although they did a pretty good job, it just came out weird, so now I tend to watch it with just subs. Is it a bad thing that I turn on close captioning for EVERYTHING so that I can understand what they're speaking in English now? |

We're on episode 6 of Fruits Basket 2019 so if you fancy catching up and joining in you'd be more than welcome. There's a list above (3rd December) listing some of the possible next shows we may pick up. I think Joshiraku is a possible one, suggested by @jdvz, as we haven't had a comedy in a while (last one was Paniponi Dash and it went down well). Other possible picks may be Macross F or Kobato and I know @inim and I wouldn't mind checking out the original Sailor Moon at some point. If you have any suggestions please put them forward. We watch one ep per day and it's informal so no pressure to watch and comment, we all have lives outside of anime. |

I've compiled my AWC 2022 plan and would like to share it because these are the shows I "need" now for my badge and list addiction. The tricky part is that when I burn down the list, I'll also have earned new levels for Samurai, Space, Dementia, and the year 1998 and by that my 3rd red star. I really love those puzzles with anime :D https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1983768&show=150#msg65425712 Anyway, I suggest every anime in the list for a group watch of course. That would kill one more bird with an already multi-functional stone. In particular, I'd suggest http://myanimelist.net/anime/2559 which is the shortest AND highest rated World Masterpiece Theater show on anidb. Now that ya'll have tasted long running show blood, what's 33 episodes among friends? I'll be happy with any show from the list of course. Others methinks would fit the group are: http://myanimelist.net/anime/1483 (insurance detective episodic stories by the director of Monster) http://myanimelist.net/anime/33337 (steampunk police, highly praised by critics) http://myanimelist.net/anime/37965 (sports drama about runners) |

I do want to try a WMT show at some point, but don't have any great desire atm, there are many more shows we've listed here I want to get around to before that. But definitely count me in when we get round to it. Run with the Wind is one I wouldn't mind watching sooner rather than later and has been on my radar for years. For longer series we have Sailor Moon and we also raised the idea of watching Macross F at some point. @Antalk mentioned he's interested in joining in the next group watch after his break getting his house move sorted (hope that all went smoothly), maybe something sports related like Run with the Wind might be a nice changed of pace after FruBa. @Antalk any suggestions from your end (@inim kindly put together a list of some shared shows on the 14th November, see above)? |

@whiteflame55 @23feanor @Antalk Thanks for the quick feedback. Last year I obsessed and rushed over AWC, and finished it in February ... This year I've not nearly as much time for this and it's perfectly fine to stretch out things well into summer. I've planned so that there are a lot of "joker slots" with trivially to fill requirements such as must be G/PG/PG-13/R+ and the recent year based slots 2010-15 and 2016-2021. This is intentionally reserved to have room for any group watch decision which may come up. Within the narrower slots (e.g. "has a character with heterochromia") I start to burn down. And there is the Barbarian task with well over 200 eps which will take their time. So I'm in no rush, yet a mid-term plan what the group will watch is useful to schedule. Shows we'll never pick would come first, and if we agree on something but not on "when" yet, I can delay that. Given that everybody seems to be happy with Run With the Wind, can we just nail it and schedule for "right after FruBa"? In any case I lock it, we'll get there until summer it seems. |

@inim @JokerVentura @filifjonkan @RandomFriday @Antalk @whiteflame55 @jdvz @KainiusTheGreat I've tagged everyone who mentioned they might want to join in next group watch or is part of the current group watch. It's that time again, looking for the next possible show. Looking back at some of our older lists (@inim's message on 14th November) we have the following: Kobato Macross F Sailor Moon Joshiraku Nadia and the Secret of Bluewater Kokoro Connect Then we have some new and interesting suggestions: ACCA 13-Territory Inspection Dept. Casshern Sins Master Keaton We've had a fair bit of drama in Fruits Basket and Run with the Wind, so something lighter, comedy or action may be nice, but I'm easy. Any suggestions welcome. My preference would be Kobato (I'm making my way through Clamp's works) or Macross F, but am happy to go with general consensus. |
