Along with the common problems such as harems or love triangles, one aspect would be when a so-called "romance" anime has no real romance with the main characters only becoming a couple or having the romantic elements explored right at the end rather than showing their romantic relationship throughout the majority of the show's run. Any anime that does this that's classified as "romance" is just false advertising, not to mention being the epitome of generic. |

NTR & shitty love triangles & forced melodrama petty misunderstandings that go on for 80000 fucking years bc the characters dont know how to communicate with each other teacher x student or inappropriate age gap/power dynamic stuff rapey/noncon vibes like "uwu i just cant control myself anymore" or "you came to my house alone, you know what this means right?" or *pins character down* "you really should be more careful letting your guard down, someone could take advantage of you like this-- luckily i'm a nice guy who would never" like bro thats not romantic its cringe tsunderes who are overly violent for no good reason making the anime look more convincing as a story about bullying than a story that has anything remotely to do with love doormat mcs who think everything is their fault and the love interest must hate them for existing even tho theyre already in a relationship and never get any character development throughout the whole story villainous side characters added just to stir up drama, such as the 'jealous school thot who challenges you to break up' or the 'jealous possessive childhood friend who feels entitled to your affections' or the 'annoying ass overprotective sibcon who tries to sabotage your relationship' also it doesnt always tooootally ruin it for me but i hate the trope where a character gets blackout drunk or has a horrible fever and confesses their feelings or says/does something crazy that they dont remember the next day leading to more annoying drama also idk if this counts but any time characters kiss and it leaves that string of spit hanging between them i wanna throw up lmao |

Cliche scenes, for example, when the couple goes out on a date to an amusement park or the mall or some festival. Honestly, I think if there were some better date destinations they could go to it would make it a lot more interesting. You might be thinking, where would they go? Good question, if you give me an anime to write I could probably think of a few places but I don't have an anime to write so I'll save my energy. :) |

Then I'm in. But when two girls fight over a guy - come on, ladies, he's not worth it. Unless he's Shiba Tatsuya, then you can fight all you want. But SoL romance is great too! Like Akkun to Kanojo And can you please tell me who's the Nyanko-chan in your signature? She hypnotized me, I want her in my life Other than Vision of Escaflowne, I haven't seen many animes with one girl pursued by two guys. Not exactly my cup of tea but not an immediate deal-breaker like reverse harems are. The girl in my sig is Rin from Little Busters. I highly recommend it, the characters are too goddamn cute OMFG. Even the dudes are cute. I'd almost consider going gay for Kyousuke. Kaichou wa Maid-sama! had one. And I also know that Chihayafuru has MMF love triangle in it. Isn't Little Busters a harem anime? I heard it was, that's why I removed it from my PTW list. And thanks for mentioning Escaflowne, I'll definitely watch it! Little Busters is about a group of friends: 4 guys and 6 girls. Each of them gets their own story arc and since the first season is all about the girls it might seem a bit harem-esque but romantic relationship type stuff is a very minor point that only briefly comes into play in the second season. Oh and there's two versions of Escaflowne. I haven't seen 2000 movie but the 1996 TV series is excellent. I just see people mentioning Little Busters as one of their fav harem shows, that's why I was so concerned. Guess I'll give it a chance after all - mainly because I can't resist this Nyanko-chan Rin and also Kudryavka looks extremely cute. Thank you so much! |

Mostly that it never happens. I like romance, but as a secondary aspect of the story, so I rarely watch any romance focused anime. The romance sub-plots almost never develop beyond the red cheeks state, when it does it's usually in an epilogue or final credits montage. Even the romance focused stuff I've watched, either someone dies and nothing happens, the romance is poorly explored or it actually don't fucking exist. There are a lot of stuff where there's just a connection between two characters and they end up together in the last second possible, but their dynamic is barely explored, or the dynamic is actually explored, but the relationship doesn't evolve. I wish they would treat romance in a more realistic/mature way in regular action/ adventure anime, the classic childish very slight romance (like ash and misty) is ok, but it wouldn't kill anyone to make some non ecchi actions or adventure anime with the ever present ships going somewhere during the story, not only in the last 3 minutes or not at all. |

That's a little weird, considering Little Busters anime removed the romance aspect from the routes (at least with how much of it I saw). Which I understand, but it was the reason why I was less than a fan of the anime (The overall story, routes, and Refrain is still great though). Still, I wouldn't call it anything like a harem. Heck, I still think Clannad barely fits the category. Also, may I recommend the Visual Novel? It's really good. Hmm, I've never played any VN tbh (is "play" the right term? I 'm not sure), but I found it on Steam and maybe I'll try it. Is it like a dating sim where you try to choose the correct answer in a dialogue? |

I hate when the main characters are basically already a couple, they are so in love with each other, then suddenly some good looking gay cunt comes out of nowhere, like as a new student or whatever, and starts flirting with the girl, even though he knows she's taken, pretty much ruining their whole relationship from that point, since her boyfriend will be extremely jealous, he will find them in situations which can easily be misunderstood, since the gay cunt makes it look like that etc Annoying af cliche in romance anime. |

i don't watch much of romance, but... if one of them gets killed at the end...it's fine if the anime is not centered around romance, but it's unnecessary and annoying otherwise. also small misunderstandings, and no-chemistry relationships where the only thing keeping them together is bad writing. |

Poorly written characters mostly. You need good characters to have a good romance. Also, pointless drama (caused most of times by poorly written characters, of course) and strechted-out series with no development. MechKingKillbot said: A lot actually to the point in which I prefer the romance be a subplot rather than the main one. Same old shit in which situation is the same, but timing/setting/whatever is different and the character never learns (and a lot more that I would need to dig further to find) While this is a manga and not an anime, that's what tiring me about Kanojo, Okarishimasu. God damn that main character never learn, he is one of the most annoying romance main characters I've ever seen... |

I want everything to be cute, naive and innocent. And if it's a shounen/seinen romance - I'm skipping it because of reasons. I prefer love triangles myself. It's kinda boring just watching two people go on dates or whatever. I feel like there's times for both. Sometimes, you want to watch drama, and other times, you just want to watch two people develop their romance, while doing cute couple things. Also I don't mind jokes but please keep it PG13. One thing that I feel does ruin anime is the oversexualization of everything. For example, some romance animes include panty shots and the like, and I feel that it is not needed unless it is the plot itself (and now I remembered some siscon anime, yay anime and your depravity). |

What ruins it for me is when there is a love rectangle/harem and all the other love interests are more interesting than the person that they end up having feelings for and end up together with. Perfect example is Kiss Him Not Me I love Shinomiya and Nanashima both are amazing guys after their character development and Mutsumi practically stayed the same the entire time I mean I don't hate him in fact I like him I'm just disappointed his character went absolutely nowhere and he was boring compared to the rest of the cast so seeing him ending up with Serinuma kinda ticked me off. I was kinda hoping for a darker side to his character cause I mean in some panels he did look menacing, but nope just the bland nice guy I just felt like he could've been more. I was hoping he would be a secret yandere cause of said panels so my dreams were crushed. Also love triangles where you know who is going to end up together yet they still throw another love interest in there and the sad part is that character is a lot cooler than the person the main guy or girl ends up with. What is the point in having on when its so obvious who is going to end up with who while best guy/girl strikes out? Luckily I haven't really ran into much when it comes to this cause I usually end up like the main or intended couple. Pedoshit obviously I don't care about age gaps a 18~20 year old can love a 60 year old for all I care, but little kids or young teens in a relationship with adults is really disturbing and gross. |

I feel like the worst thing that could happen in a romance anime is if you don't ship the two main characters and it just feels completely forced some other bad things: - harems - too many cliche scenes - too edgy characters - stupid misunderstandings - shy characters: perhaps its just me, but I rarely feel as if theres any chemistry when one of the characters is shy. - I hate when one of the main characters go to another love interest after there is a fallout with the main lead - I also hate when most of their relationship is just small talk and teasing. Like what do you even love about the other person at that point? The fact that they tease you every time you're together and that you caught them doing something nice at one point so you fall in love with them? It seems unrealistic and theres not much chemistry. |

I find it hard to say exactly what I don't like from romance because it honestly depends on the series. When it is a male lead, I absolutely hate when he is shown to be thinking or doing perverted things every second. From a female lead show, I hate when a girl acts like moron in front of her crush after she realizes her feelings. Just make the characters act like normal people and I will love the romance. |

1. Characters fall in love with little to no reason All harem/reverse harem. And others that's not in harem/reverse harem genre. 2. Polyamory When a character ended up with more than one love interest. 3. Instant true love When a character suddenly claimed someone is their one true love, especially in case like love at first sight, love during childhood, love only because of physical attraction, etc. I have a very hard time believing such thing is true love BS. |

This term is often defined incorrectly because of all those hentai freaks who are obsessed with the other definition of NTR(basically raping another person's significant other or cuckholding). The real definition is just cheating or unfaithfulness. So I hope that helps you understand why people say NTR is bad when it comes to romance animes because it basically means there's cheating or unfaithfulness involved. |

Maan so many things ruin it! 1. no kiss 2. introducing new characters just for the sake of it. like oh we need a new problem now. lets introduce his childhood friends whose been in love with all along. 3. stretching the story unnecessarily. 4. characters who act crazy dumb and cant take obvious hints. that just happens in anime. They don't keep it realistic. bringing out convenient coincidences for the story to proceed smoothly. such coincidences are understandable in some anime that are sci fi and all tho. but most romance anime just ruin it. out of atleast 30 or so romance anime i've watched, id say only 8 to ten were really good. |

Tbvh love triangles really can be ruin a whole anime series That's not to say I don't enjoy watching a third party try to win over the MC from the main love interest. It's just annoying when the MC actually falls for it! So I guess its more so the "Oh but I love them both and don't know who to choose plots." or even worse the "I'm dating X but and starting to see Y in a different light. ( even thought the entire set up of the series and supposed endgame is suppose to be X. Lets just make X jealous and insecure. ) It just really makes the MC very unlikable imo (of course this excludes harems as thats usually the whole premise, its more so annoying in the typical romance/shoujo series.) Like I just want to see anime display secure relationships not a wishy washy MC. On a side note; Series that have the MC put the third party/love interest Y in their place are *chefs kiss* |

When the whole purpose of it is dragging on until an actual confession happens and ending right after they get together. That's why I mainly like VN romances more, even non-eroges, they feel better in that their purposes are usually about making the characters go all the way out. I know some may say it's boring after that, but seeing the characters together actually feels rewarding after watching them get together. Though, for sure if they make it interesting enough, even those romances that drag on until the confession can be interesting, 5-toubun is a nice example. It mainly depends on how they execute it. |

-When the characters act like complete idiots in font of their crushes. Like, make them act like normal people, for god's sake. -Character's only defining trait being in love, they have no ambition, no goals in life other than gaining their crushe's attention. -When characters fall in love for no apparent reason. -Shitty love triangles, forced melodrama. -Stupid misunderstandings that go on forever which could be solved if only the chars actually communicated. -Noncon stuff with the male char pinning down the female char with the " you should realise, I'm a man, I can't control myself" bs. -Overly violent female character. -Characters that take the meaning of "dense" to a whole new level. -When the female char goes "what is this doki doki feeling i have inside me?", like come on, they need someone else to literally spell it out for them. -Pathetic love rivals that bring nothing of substance to the story. -Too much blushing over simple hand holding, kissing etc. -Only getting together at the end of the series. -Abusive relationships potrayed as loving. |

Unnecessary drama caused by an annoying female lead - that female lead that no matter how many times the male lead confirms that he likes her, he is into her, he wants to be ONLY with her; she still questions and makes that unnecessary drama. and that unnecessary drama makes her annoying. They start going out in the beginning and then there is this circling around, and around, until the end of the series. Like, he said it, he is trying to do everything there is to do to show his good intentions and there she is - 'he doesn't like me' etc. ... I'm not talking about the comedy element in any sort of a way. Igarashi Iroha(3D Kanojo) had this drama, and i was about to drop it because of it. I felt like every two-three episodes are about the same thing. Like there is no character development, like, they don't learn from their 'mistakes'. |
