I've probably become isekai trash seeing that I didn't mind this show all too much. But that was probably because I never tried to look at it as something like Konosuba or No Game No Life and more so as just a show to pass the time.

Overall I wouldn't really say it's as bad as people depict it to be.

Things of course that I have some gripes with are

1) Developing the idea of Shin's magic more. It was genuinely interesting when he mixed science in with magic. It died off early on. Was hoping that they would keep it up throughout the series. All of the members of the Ultimate Magicians I would assume would have at least learn some of Shin's techniques, so actually seeing them in practice and having them be mentioned at least somewhere during their training would have made this show a hell lot more interesting.
2) As being romance trash, I was honestly happy that they actually managed to confess to each other instead of an endless slew of misunderstandings. Though I do wish they would have spent just a bit more time fleshing out their feelings since it felt kinda forced.
3) Oliveira could have been a much greater character if they spent more time on his ambitions etc. A large chunk of the show was just Shin and his friends slowly becoming demon slaying beasts which I wouldn't mind if it were to stay that way. However coming up to the last 2 - 3 episodes and suddenly cutting back to him seemed rushed and forced. Sure we got his backstory but seeing as how he's already accomplished his goal it kinda just fell flat.
4) Speaking of the last 2 - 3 episodes honestly the tension that they were trying to create didn't feel that way at all. Shin and the others joke around as they fly over to the town burning and crumbling away. They land and immediately split into teams with no real reaction to anything. The fights lacked any sort of danger and they all ended (to nobody's surprise) in like 5 seconds. Just when you thought it might pick up with the guy using the magic gear, what instead happened was that his barrier broke and he was whisked away into our memory landfill.
5) Any sort of drama never went anywhere in this show. Specifically the moments between Shin and Sicily. Whenever Sicily had any doubts or worries, my ears would perk up hoping something... ANYTHING... would happen to strengthen the relationship between Shin and Sicily. But alas, nothing noteworthy happens and Shin just does something to make her feel better rather than to strengthen her as a character. Even that last moment where Sicily feels as if she could never do anything as great as Shin, sure it was sort of wholesome that everyone she saved came to make her feel better but it really didn't satisfy what they were building up.

I should probably put this in a review instead of the last episode discussion but oh well it's too late for that now.

(Side Note: Log Horizon is the best isekai, change my mind.)

You're arguing with a guy who gives a big chunk of scores to an anime with "high tier" waifus. No waifu, 1/10. Waifu, instant 10/10. LOL

I feel like the show had a lot of potential, but also suffered a lot of short comings.

I think it would've made a significant difference if they focused more on Shin's ability to use magic. The premise itself is cool. When reincarnated he still remembers how science works from beforehand and is basically able to apply that to magic to make it better. I really did like that concept of him essentially knowing more about how the magic works in that world than the actual people who live there. The average "decent" magician there thinks chanting a spell and spitting out a little flame that could barely light paper on fire is good fire magic. Meanwhile in the first episode you have Shin explaining that visualizing the magic improves its strength and he was able to visualize the hydrogen burning and oxygen fueling the flame and making it bigger, etc. Then after that they basically stopped that and he would just come up with new magic out of the blue.

I did also like that even the side characters are considered extremely OP by that worlds standards, its just that Shin is almost god tier.

I think the goofy KonoSuba art style was a big hindrance to the show too, and probably the best thing to compare it to. KonoSuba used that art style because the show is extremely goofy and comedic. It's a show that's 95% comedy, 5% action so it works. On the other hand, this show is like 34% comedy, 33% romance, 33% action. So using that goofy art just doesnt look nice outside of the comedy moments, hampers the quality of the action scenes, and just makes it hard to take the show seriously.

I seriously think if they focused maybe a little less on the comedy, built the side characters up a bit more, focused more on the magic a bit, and changed the art style, this would've been an easy 8/10...But it really was just like trying to watch a KonoSuba-esque show that tried to do too much all at once.

Also....was Miria the evil demonoid lady hinting at being/trying to get pregnant by Strohm at the end there?

that was a very open ended ending. thought they'd try to cram even more into the last episode, but looks like even that wasn't possible. this was average as all hell.

What a Bullcrap, this show is way too generic, and i'm actually surprised of my self being able to watch the entire episodes. Why would the author decided to add isekai vibes to the show ? like, it adds no value to the show because the MC didn't even bring out his past life, ever ! the only interesting thing is Olivier's backstory.

Overall score 5/10, it's a meh

Yeah, the guy happens to remember only those. Very convenient. It's like the writer just be like "How about remembering his family? Nah too much to bring out later. Scrap." Oh wait. The writing is like that most of the time. Still 10/10 though eh?

Don't see this getting a second season. Pretty generic series overall, isekai part didn't really matter that much except for the main characters knowing some stuff which probably could have been omitted and easily replaced by something entirely else. The gags were definitely the best part of this series, together with Shin being overpowered.

10:26 Shin why stop her, you party pooper, let her continue, let the guy die while seeing some anime tiddies ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).

I can understand how you feel with regards to point 4, but the last episode I feel definitely brought the tension with the fight between Miria and the ultimate magicians. I truly felt like she was crushing them after seeing the kids 1 shotting the other demons and she even was able to keep pace with Shin once he arrived.

Funny you talked about the Miria fight. One can say that it was (almost) single-handedly ruined by the blonde little girl's nonsensical Gabriel (from Gabriel Dropout) reaction towards getting outgunned by Miria. I know I wouldn't feel the same way as she did when I encounter a wild tiger in a forest. Unless it's common sense to give a meh reaction to lethal hazards in that world, it's nonsensical. That's not the way to build tension. Instead, that's how to ruin it.

As much as the tension did ramp up a bit, the fact that you knew that Shin was just going to come in and single handedly save them definitely didn't help it. I feel like if they wanted to take this more serious approach to the show, they should have scaled Shin's power down by a lot. I do like cheesy comedy and romance every now and then, but we have seen time and time again that if you want to include drama as well, an OP character just won't do it. It was a shame too since Shin's use of science and magic was really interesting at the start. It wasn't just a one time gimmick for blue fire but actually took into consideration a lot more of his skills. However as he grew up and as we approached the end of the series, he moved from using substantially interesting spells to the "if you put in more power, things will die faster" approach.

My man, someone who speaketh the truth. This show was by no means a travesty, but it was far--like, FAR--from perfect. Bland and generic looking villain (at least he had some kind of interesting initiative, although I completely skipped his backstory, cause why tf do I care). Annoying, boring, cookie cutter housewife waifu that whines too much. ANY of the other girls were better than blue hair whatever-her-fucking-name-was, but skipping 15-20 seconds anytime I saw her face made it marginally better. Yet still, I did finish, so it must have been decent enough to warrant a full watch. With a base score of 7 for any show I finish, this one lost a point for the terrible romance I had to skip past. 6/10. Seriously, I have not seen a show with a worse romance interest, and Death March Isekai had a pretty intolerable one.

(Side Note: Log Horizon is amazing. Not my fav--I'm rather partial to Overlord and Geminar, but one of the best out there. I see a fellow fan of romance and drama has also seen Plastic Memories. By far one of my favorite shows ever.)

Totally agree with you there. They had so many chances to develop Sicily further but in the end any and all complication was just solved by Mr Nice Guy Shin. Her dramatic moments never hit as hard as they could have because of the way they resolved it. So yeah, my thoughts are pretty much the same as you here, the show was by no means the worst, but there was definitely an astounding amount of lost potential.

Sicily was cute and all but, as you said, she pretty much is just a cookie cutter template 'waifu'. Surrounding drama around her felt flat, her overall character never had enough depth to really flesh out their romance and personally I never found her to have anything special or unique. Good characters have a well thought out character, they don't have to specifically be grounded completely in reality but at the same time you can't just have the living description of perfect. There were times too where I had hope for her gain something, anything, specifically those times where she questioned if she was relying too much on Shin. There was something there, something that could have grown into something compelling, but as I said, in the end Shin cut it short and we were left disappointed.

Sizilien is not a typical waifu, shy girls like her rarely get to be main girl. Where Onodera failed Sizilien took charge and never looked back. That is why she is best waifu.

Yeah, because saying unnatural lines during her handful of drama as the main girl ought to make her less typical...

Any girl can persevere. Anyone can write a girl that perseveres. But in the end, just that one character trait isn't going to do anything if it doesn't pair with something else and if the character doesn't develop. Sure, Sicily isn't perfect but in the end she never goes anywhere with her development and remains "the perfect girl" for Shin, and thus she remains boring. She was cute at the start sure, but when she stays within that cookie cutter template you eventually lose interest in her.

Yeah, sorry elementex, Ray pretty much put the nail in the coffin on this one: remaining Shin’s “perfect girl” did nothing to help her character. There’s a reason “shy” girls are rarely the main romance option. What are you gonna with them? What direction can you go other than not shy. The character can’t develop to be more shy and closed off, that doesn’t work. The character needs to open up, at which point you’ve changed their whole archetype. With a shy girl, there’s just no character development, ergo, boring af.

The poorly written drama lines given to her by the author really backfired on her. Like that one instance when she's harassed by a guy at the academy. Yes, she was a damsel in distress in that scene. Then, she said, "Sob Yes obaa-san. Sob Actually I used Shin to scare the guy off. Sob He's really a goodie two shoes. Sob" Like what were you trying to do, author? Use Shin to scare some dude off? Really? The author must be like "Alright, I got an innocent and shy blue haired girl for MC with ample... assets. This line should make her sound less innocent. CHARACTER DEPTH!! BAM! NAILED IT"

That line pretty much broke the deal for me. Same thing happened in the final episode even though to a lesser extent. The drama she got caught in throughout the season didn't add depth to her character. Instead, it made her look like a pandering prop even more.

Boring af to you maybe, but for many she is perfection incarnate. Just because she doesn't fit your archetype for a girl doesn't mean she is a bad waifu.

It's exactly because she's so blatantly perfect down to the letter she's boring af and the drama made her a badly written character.

What about her is perfect? Being shy is imperfection, and so is blurting out embarrassing things.

But you just said that she IS perfection incarnate. Being perfection incarnate somehow isn't perfect now? What does incarnate mean? Make up your mind, will you?

And that's the exact problem that we were talking about. She's blatantly of an archetype soiled with author's poor attempt to give her depth. There's a reason why we call a certain perfect combo of characterization an archetype, a cliche.

Google "parody" then come back to us. Better yet look up its synonyms. If you consider that elitism then public or maybe even private education has failed you. Stay in your lane.

you're hiding behind the word "parody" cause you have no legit excuse to say why 1 is hated and the other is loved when they're the same. pathetic loser.

Wow this was pretty bad. The idiotic OP main character who is superman from another world with all the cheat codes, the cringe-worthy romance with the awkward fanservice girlfriend, the too many boring side characters that I lost count, and all the fucking time wasted preparing everyone for WW3(magic edition). Even the animation quality dropped after the first few episodes. Not to mention whole demonoid thing felt so stupid. The writer could at least make it creative instead of just having bunch of humans with soap in their eyes running around and shooting laser beams from their hands. Seriously WTF?

The only that kept me going was a hope of some real action but all I got was how to be OP 101 tutorials. And the 2 min fight in the end was so disappointing including the fact that Shin wasn't able to defeat the female demon yet managed to drive of her much powerful boss with ease. It just felt so inconsistent.

I liked some aspects of the show, but there was never any full exploration of so many angles the story could have logically taken. Too much focus on romance at times, too much childishness and school and student focus, not view on Shin maybe one day becoming a demon lord of demonoids if he grew out of check. The hypocrisy of : oh those bad demonoids" instead of fuly investigating more of the social inequities in the world, and the main " villain" Strome, just was done an episode or two before the end...it kinda got a bit action packed at the finale, but it was too little, too late. Still, it wasa decent enough show at times I suppose. This show was but a 5.5/10 at best.

And....it's over.

I really didn't expect from this show yet disappoint me. A lot of unnecessary side characters, bad animation in many episodes and extremely generic without being funny at least. 1/10 for the anime.

U have to admit tho, this level of animation is way better than a lot of shitty isekai we had in 2018 & 19
Yeah a lot of side characters feels like the show had them just so shin will immediately outclass them in their specialty or they are used to make shin stronger or look stronger eg : the making of sword and the magic school uniform thing
But hey, the show uses a lot of bad tropes to give the side cast some level of individuality. Which is better than that smartphone isekai where all the girls just fall more him left and right
Ultimately 1/10 is quite harsh for a show that didn’t completely bore me to death, unlike most other isekai , and btw that reincarnation bullshit all isekai have is used as a reason to justify the protagonist op bullshit powers, basically a plot device, so i can get by the story by glossing over that part
Show had some narrative going, generic but still some narrative
5/10 is more fitting for the more higher up isekai anime this season , really can’t be anymore generous because my standards for any isekai is very Low now
