I definitely also had mixed feelings about this "finale". Which is a shame really, because they built it up so well the first 10 episodes and then suddenly Viktor left us all scratching our heads. Long rant ahead fair warning.

Viktor's motives are still unclear to me, since we never knew from the beginning what they were exactly, but it was implied he was done with skating and wanted to move on with life because he found love and life outside of skating. He loved coaching Yuri, and learned so much from that. But then last few episodes suddenly we see Viktor still has the drive to compete and why? We don't know, and it's never answered in the finale. That's frustrating. And when Yuri points out that he wants him to go back to skating and retire as his coach, Viktor says it's selfish? That part I didn't understand.

I am with you. I have ambivalent feelings about this episode. I feel like yuuri winning gold was sacrificed for the possibility of a second season. Also Victor going back to skating seemed forced to me. I mean how will Victor be able to coach and compete? They just pulled that out of their… I would have preferred a conclusive ending. A second season is not always the best thing to happen *cough gundam seed destiny cough*. How will they top the skating routines from this season? Is it even possible? They were already doing things real skater cannot pull off. Also it all seemed crammed and Party... let’s call it…unresolved…

EDIT:
Victor’s ambivalent mysterious behaviour is explained in an interview (Animage 01/17: https://wavemotioncannon.com/2016/12/20/miracle-on-ice-how-mitsuro-kubo-created-her-charactersanimage-january-2017/) with Kubo. She basically says she tried to let especially Victor act the way he does to direct the Story. Normally I’d say that is what you do, but with Victor it feels kind of too obvious. One episode he is like that, next episode all different again…

And the awful podium placing with Yurio BARELY winning gold, seems a little convenient....

This Seems to be a Hommage to Tatsuki Machida who retired in 2014 after winning silver in Saitama. Yuzuru Hanyu won the Gold with 0.33 points ahead.
Kubo is a huge Fan of Machida. Here you can find some background information:

http://iguana012.tumblr.com/post/152696808551/yuri-on-ice-and-the-true-story-behind-it

Still, I really loved it. In September, when I discovered the show via MAL, I would never have thought that it would become one of my favourite animes of all time.

Best thing for me was the Duet, really beautiful and kind of heart mending after all the emotional meddling (with my heart). I wish we could have seen the whole piece. Also seeing the three of them living in Russia was really a nice way to end it.
All in all I enjoyed it and will watch the second season.

So he pulled it off... Sorta.

It was surprising that Yuri was able to make such a big comeback. I didn't expect him to do that at all. I'm pretty sure they will have a S2. It's going to be interesting to see how Yuri will develop his skills even more and his competition against Yurio.

Thank you for explaining about figure skating. I am glad as the same figure skate fan.
To add one, Russians will participate in the Euro Chanpionship instead of the Four Continents.

Also, "Yuri on ICE" is not the Worlds or the Olympic Games, but the Grand Prix series is drawn mainly because broadcasting stations (TV Asahi) have the right to broadcast in Japan of Grand Prix series "adult circumstances" is due to.

Yuzuru missed the Japan Nationals due to influenza. I expect he to be active at the Four Continents and Worlds.

What a shitty ending... Hope they can resolve more stuff in season 2.
I was hoping for Japanese yuri to win, but i guess not. And Yurio, he's one of my least fav character. The way he punches people for no reason really gets on my nerve. Hope he won't appear that much in s2 since he wins gold already...

Yuri on ice definitely surpassed my expectations! I thought that no one would like an anime about Ice Skating, but that was definitely one of the best anime of this season!

I wrote another post about Yuri!!! on Ice, where I show some of the accessories that the characters used, that now are available for sale in the real life! ^^

I cried... I am such a sentimental person. And seeing Victor cry was such a huge hit. But dang, his crying face is so hot.

I am not shock with Yurio winning gold medal. I actually kind of predicted it. He work his ass-off to earned it.

JJ winning bronze does annoy me. He work so damn hard rising from the last spot. But I guess it can't be helped. Since it's the only option left.

The gala was so beautiful. It makes me forget about all of the heartache I got earlier before. Victuri is so cute together, especially with their matching outfits.

I had high expectations for this show, and it surpassed all of them. AOTY

Tho I'm lowkey a bit salty that JJ got third over Otabek. He pretty much skated both routines flawlessly and still got fourth :(

If only Yuri hasn't messed up his short program, he would have that gold for sure... Loved seeing Yuri and Victor skating together.
So does that mean we can expect a second season? :p

Yeah but Yuri gave it all. In his short program program he only got 90+ and Yurio got 100 and in final Yuri got a highest score comeback and Yurio only got like 30+ above Yuri so I guess if Yuri got a highest score in his first then it will be 330+ something but it's ok. I'am sure he'll make a comeback.

I... have a lot of mixed emotion. First few minutes in and I was a GONER. And then we get to see Yuuri's performance and I was officially DECEASED. One of the most beautifully animated scene, but I guess it's to be expected. ;~;

I don't know whether I like Yurio winning or not. I loved him, I think he's very precious and I think he deserve the good things in life, but actually winning gold for his debut............ ok? No going down before going up like Yuuri? Actaly just consistent at the top since junior division? ;; He But well, we have to thank him for giving us a season 2, I guess. Although I didn't really think I needed a season 2, but well, sure, why not?? Please give us the domestic Ice Family fluff that we need.

Mixed emotions at Viktor at this episode, especially. Returning to ice? Still a coach? What????? Unless you mean you two are finally gonna do pair skate.... huhuhu speaking of, I DIDN'T EXPECT THAT EXHIBITION??? I was just thinking about how the exhibition's animation was so beautiful and it would've been great to idk, see them skate together, THEN BAMF VIKTOR ENTORED AND I'M BYE

there is no next level for me, im done, i died here, bye

It was a rushed episode. The skating competition wasn't exciting, beautifull though. Victor and Yuri's interactions was cringeworthy as usual. One good Tonly thing that was good was that most characters were not high-school kids, which was refreshing. Final score 7/10

I feel kind of betrayed. It did great despite only having 24 minutes to show 6 FS, Yuuri's exhibition and the conclusion to “let’s end this”, but the story was building up to Yuuri winning gold since episode 1. Gold was always Yuuri’s goal and it was mentioned all the time. And then he loses by just 0,12 point? It would have been so much more satisfying and touching to see him win gold after all the mental struggles he has had. Of course he can still win gold in season 2, but season 1 should be able to stand alone and I don’t feel it can when it didn’t reach Yuuri’s goal of winning gold. I didn’t want Yurio to win because he just feels too flat. Yurio wanted to win like it was a matter of life and death. But why? Yuuri wanted to win to prove his worth to himself by winning gold after losing all confidence in himself and this was one of the last chances he had. I never understood why Yurio wanted to win so badly. He’s still young so he will have a chance the next many years as opposed to Yuuri who is getting old for a figure skater. Because of this I wasn’t able to root for Yurio. It feels like Yurio only won so Yuuri would have an excuse to keep skating.

I feel like the fact that Victor wanted to return to the ice came out of the blue. The only hints we got was when he avoided questions about his plans for the future in episode 8 and his reaction to the other skaters’ SP in episode 11. Of course it makes sense that Victor would go back to skating once he regained his inspiration since that seemed like the reason he took a break to coach Yuuri in the first place. But I honestly got the impression that Victor wouldn’t mind retiring to be Yuuri’s coach (besides, he’s already 27/28 so it wouldn’t be weird for him to retire). He implied that he wanted to be Yuuri’s coach for the rest of his skating career in episode 9, and he even cried and seemed so sad about it in half of episode 12. I wish they would keep being just coach/student. One of the things that made me love Yuri on Ice was how sweet the relationship between Yuuri and Victor is, so I’m afraid something will change if there’s rivalry between them.

Despite its faults I’ll probably end up giving it 9/10 or 10/10. It has been years since I enjoyed something as much as Yuri on Ice.

Ok first of all: CAN WE ALL AGREE VICTUURI IS CANON NOW?! That pair skating scene was truly fricking over the top romanctic maaaaan!! These guys don't need love confessions or kissing scenes, they make love through skating. It's a sports anime after all, what did you expect?

AH I needed a good rewatch because there was too much going on in this episode! I've been thinking about it all night and i came to the conclusion that I actually really like this ending of season 1! Most of these finalist made history!!
JJ struggled his way too the podium (which was really unnecessary imo) but yeah he landed that crazy loop so I guess it's fair, he made indeed a great comeback.
Let's not forget about Phichit! He did great too because his score was really high (like 50 points higher than Yuri last years GPF score) I'm looking forward to seeing more from him!
YURI FRICKING PLISETSKY MADE HISTORY!! I did not expect him to win tbh! Ofcourse I wanted Yuuri to win but if they were going to place him 2nd anyway I'd rather see Chris win but Yurio proved my expectations wrong and he really did win his first medal in his SENIOR DEBUT wtf. He is just too good for his age, it seems they're all in Russia in season 2 so I wonder what training Yurio gets from Yakov. Victor can learn some coaching tips and he can help Yurio out mentally!
Ok, I'm getting off-topic. The one who had the best fucking free skate ever is my absolute favorite Yuuri Katsuki!! His free skate was so perfectly satisfying to watch, it was just as how good I expected it to be: absoluty flawless and breaking a record of a skating legend! Most of the characters were crying and so was I, Yuuri Katsuki made history too! He was only 0,12 points away from a gold medal. If he skated eros like he did in ep 8 he would have easily become first sooooo yeah, I'm definitely ready for a season two. I'm ready to see this man win a gold medal and getting married! Everything we wanted for tonight's finale can still happen!!!

10/10 and a place at the top of my list for excellent ost, extremely likeable characters and top entertainment. This is the first airing anime I've followed from the first episode to the last (I've only started watching anime in spring) and it truly was an amazing and special ride, I'm gonna miss waiting every Wednesday and I'm looking forward to more content c:

Amazing episode.

I ended it with a huge smile on my face that lasted a few minutes.

Of course it felt rushed and incomplete, like we needed 3 more episodes to have a staisfying ending. I didnt need any of the JJ, Chris, Otabek moments tbh. I actually forwarded when they were on screen.

But I dont mind, all in all, it was a great ending. Yuuri was Yuuri and Im so happy he was able to do his free skate so beautifully like that.
Also Yurio did great and deserved the gold. I admit I was disappointed Yuuri didnt win, but its okay. It will give him drive for next season.

I dont see how Victor is going to coach while being in the competition (I actually think its stupid), but I trust the authors.

Im sad wednesdays will be Yuri-less now T^T

Nice. The ending is a bit disappointing though. Putting Yuri's performance in the middle of the episode is a bad move, because his was the most exciting but the ones that came after his were kind of stale. Yurio's was a good one to put last though!

Anyways, I hope there will be a sequel!

This song was very beautiful overall. The voice acting was the highlight actually. Tosshi's versatility as well as Ucchi's range of emotions. And of course, Mamo as JJ.

I wanna write more but I'm sleepy.

I'm coming to terms with the finale slowly.

Unlike a lot of other people who are mad, I'm not upset that Yuuri came second and Yurio first. That's actually what I wanted to happen, so Yuuri wouldn't retire, and I was almost certain I wouldn't get it so I'm glad to be wrong! I'm also glad Victor is returning to skating, which I know some people are mad about but I could see it coming.

That being said...I got the major plot ending that I wanted, and I still feel emotionally unfulfilled?

The pacing in the last quarter of the season was terrible, and the last two episodes in particular were so rushed it was heart to feel any emotions during them. I thought the opening scene with Victor/Yuuri's confrontation was good, and Otabek's skate to Beethoven leading into Yurio's skate was very good and handled the issue of how to make it suspenseful (even though Yuuri wasn't skating last) very well, and the pairs skating was beautiful, but everything else...left me a little empty?

The opening scene was too short. The emotional/personal story arcs of everyone were rushed. Victor and Yuuri still weren't honest to each other about their feelings, both skating and personal. Yuuri still doesn't know how much coaching him has opened Victor's eyes, and Victor still only has a mild understanding of how much Yuuri loves and respects him.

The banquet plotline was completely dropped, which has me livid because it was a gamechanging moment and so far...all it's done is have Victor's actions at the start of the season make sense? If they don't touch on that plotline next season I will be very, very mad, because that was such a big moment. (Also the kiss, but ignoring that seems inevitable for now.)

Basically it was rushed, and possibly would've worked better having a whole episode cover the first three skaters, ending with Yuuri, and then have the last episode cover the last three skaters with extra time to focus on the non-skating emotional plots and character arcs.

I hope season two will touch on all of the loose threads, and I'm glad Yuuri isn't retiring, Victor is returning, and my son Yurio won gold. I'm gradually starting to like the finale better, but all in all the last two episodes of the season were far too rushed and messy compared to the solid start to the show.

I also really feel like the original ending was going to be Yuuri winning gold, Yurio silver, and a more solid conclusion as to where Yuuri/Victor's feelings for each other were, but that ending was thrown away to set up season two. Which is a damn shame, because the last minute changes really show.

Wow, calm your titties, please. Am I not allowed to express my own opinion? An opinion that includes not seeing a kiss in ep. 7 btw.

They missed their chance to make things canon after ep. 7. When they never adressed the 'kiss' again at all in the following episodes I knew they wouldn't make anything 'canon'.

Well the thing is, it's literally the only thing you ever cared about in the show, isn't it? Every damn week you were whining about how they're still not "canon" and that the fujoshis are taking the bait and whatever. Must be pretty frustrating.

Except that they are canon. The fact that they are going to get married says nothing to you!? I mean, the kiss and the fact that Yuri confessed his love on television should be more than enough, but if it isn't, I think the fact that they are engaged kinda proves they are in love and in a relationship.

I think Victor landed the news to do the opposite. He gave Yurio more motivation to skate, to prevent Yuri from getting gold and retire. Look at his reaction and conversation with Yuri and silver medal.

Yeah, I know. Victor's personality so far showed no signs of foul play ever, I was just being sarcastic. However, this series always made potential drama to end just in bluffs, but considering Yurio's explosive personality, that move was like a double-edged sword and could have made Yurio loose concentration.

Let me post what I posted on FB.

"Okay final episode of Yuri on Ice is over. What did I think? While it gave me an ending I was looking for. It was still pretty predictable but happy Yuri didn't get gold. They did a good job setting up for a season 2 and we are clear where it is going. Now are Yuri and Victor a couple? They kind of just did a lot of hugging....so this kind of comes off as bait if ask me. Also the pacing was very bad. It was so fast. So, yes while I like the outcome but the pacing was very bad. "

I gave the show a 7. I think this is a good show but calling it a top show of the fall kind of shows just how meh the fall was.

Also it ended up being bait in the end. They are just "Good friends". I mean I was expecting a kiss but I got a bunch of hugs.
I haven't updated in years but now I have changed that. I'll be free soon.

To Everyone who's disappointed about Yuuri's ranking I appreciate your messages in here but when I saw the comments on youtube. Please take no offense on what I'm about to say but for me I find it irritating to see them constantly whining. So what if Yuuri didn't won gold, all of us can't always expect what we want to expect from this anime, please remember that this is focusing on sports and the character development of the main characters. For us Fujoshis and Fudanshis this type of anime that shows bits about gay relationships isn't that common to expect in the anime world, we can always expect boy to girl and lesbian fanservices. For me what I like about this anime is that it doesn't require fan service to make it interesting, the character development and the realism of this show amazes me, for example when the skaters fall during the jumps they perform during competitions, when JJ's confidence was shattered due to the pressure performing at such an important event proves that they're human and shows that you can't always get the long end of the stick.

How the hell is this top 40? I don't get it. The characters besides Yuri, Yuri and Victor aren't all that interesting. Animation inconsistencies, bad pacing and the ending was disappointing.

Is this a thing with MAL where they rate an on airing series and then it plummets in score later on? This is a 7/10 at best.

12 was easily the best episode of this series

Happy to see that Victor wants to go back to competitive skating, dude belongs on the ice and not on the sidelines
Also glad to see that Japanese Yuuri didn't win gold, it would've been even better if he got thoroughly obliterated and ended up last but I'll take the silver.

Hopefully S2 will focus on Victor's comeback and the side characters like Mila and Seung-gil. I'm okay with no Yuuri scenes though seeing Victor take back his rightful place on the ice and slaughtered the 2 Yuris will be very nice.

Honestly, I'm dissatisfied at the ending, it feels so ambiguous and so un-ending-like. It's as if they rewrote the original ending to leave an open one that allows them to do an S2. It feels so weird and so inconclusive. I would have preferred a more conclusive ending that still allows an S2 (there are so many ways to do it), or to just have spinoffs following the other skaters as protagonists.

Still, this anime has been solid overall, and my dissatisfaction aside, it's still a fairly nice ending, so this still gets a 9/10 from me. A shame, it could have gotten a 10/10 had they had a better ending. Still remains a favorite anime of mine, and I'll definitely watch season 2 and any OVAs if they're going to have some.

Why are people grumbling about Yurio winning? It was only natural that he did, he's the friggin second coming of Victor himself, a pure genius, and it's been hammered down for this whole show, Yakov seeing Victor in him, Yuri seeing Victor in him, even Victor himself seeing himself in him. So why are you people surprised at a result that was only natural and logical? I don't get you. Did you want a shonen-esque asspull out of nowhere that much in a show that was trying to be realistic when it comes to sport?

I think this had the best ending that it could. I get the feeling that if Yuri had won the gold, he may have retired; the silver gives him room to grow.

I found the show frustrating with Yuri's feelings of worthlessness throughout. I kept wanting to scream at him that he's clearly one of the best skaters in the world, though he doesn't seem to realize that.

While it's nice that they highlighted the GP circuit, the emphasis on the GP Final seems odd, as my impression is that the World's is the more prestigious competition. (And they never even mentioned the Olympics.)

My favourite character overall was Yuri P. and I found myself agreeing with his point of view much of the time.

Overall, this show was fantastic. Maybe it'll pave the way for more figure skating anime in the future - maybe focus on Dance next time?

I believe the "NEXT LEVEL" is hinting pair skating. So Victor can coach and perform both at once. So they'll be performing as a duo. Same sex duos are permitted IRL but idk about YoI.

For me personally I think that this anime is the best one I've seen so far, yeah it is genred to sports because it's main focus is sports, yeah I'm a fujoshi myself and I personally enjoy the bits and teases the anime shows, but that's not the reason I enjoyed it, I enjoyed it because not only does it focuses on figure skating but also the realism of the a certain situation and how the people feel or think about it. Yurio deserved to win because of what he went through. Yuuri and Viktor's relationship does improve and renewed in every episode but it also shows us how much they have changed themselves together during the year they faced.

So please stop criticizing this show, there's gonna be a season 2 of this show that might be a good start to the main characters once again.

While the show wasn't all that spectacular (still very good, though), I have to give it mad props for its mature depiction of a relationship between gay men. They weren't caricatures, they weren't presented as fan service.

I watched this without any expectation and yet it managed to disappoint me.
The first episodes were okay, there were something fresh and modern in it using youtube etc... and I was curious about the skating. We already had some forced gay stuff here and there without any subtlety, it was weird but light enough so we can ignore them.
Then Victor became Yuri's personal coach and it completely turned into a 100% fujobait crap, annoying and episode after episode more and more cringeworthy to a point that it was ridiculous. The saddest thing is that they didn't even tried to do something more ambitious, they had some material to do it, but no it's just another gay comedy, with skating as a background theme.
Special mention for the latest episode's french commentator, usually they don't even bother taking native speakers so kudos for this but damn the acting was so bad and inadequate to the visuals, probably a trainee, and foremost why the hell is a french person commenting on japanese tv for a tournament which takes place in Spain? It makes no sense.
4/10

...you do know that the French commentator was real-life Swiss figure skater Stephane Lambiel voicing himself(Stephane Lambiel) in the anime, right?
Though I agree the voice acting was amateur, beats me why he was speaking French XD

I honestly really loved the episode though...I think him winning silver was the best possible outcome, as he wont retire till he wins gold now...:3

Well with all the emotional exchanges and what is being said here. I was expecting another kiss and not just a bunch of hugs. One or two would have been fine but it went overboard after that. It is like there was a kiss planned but it got scrapped.

"See you NEXT LEVEL" ---------- WHEN?!?????!!! Rather, its legit that there's gonna be a 2nd season right?!

I absolutely loved this show. I need more... more of everything. I want to see how far Yuri AND Yurio can go in skating. I want to see more of the other skaters too. I want to see Victor's comeback... I want to see Victor skate... that ending with the pair of them skating was such a treat but I want to see more! Victor and Yuri together is so perfect, I love their relationship whether romantic or not (since people make such a big deal of it), they're just so nice as a pair. But of course since I'm a BL fan, I wouldn't mind (in fact, I wish) their relationship is/would turn romantic. If it doesn't, then I'll just leave it up to my head to pair them together, either way I just want to see more of them period.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. Without that information, it just makes it look a plot device. Yeah, the character narratives were really inconsistent with what the show was built on, but I hope that the creators will find enough new material for season 2. I'm just left feeling confused at to what goals Viktor, Yuri, and Yurio will have now. Will Viktor motivate Yuri once more, but this time as a competitor? Perhaps Yuri now has the strength and confidence to stand alone. Maybe we'll finally see more of Viktor's character and understand him better. And Yurio...well I don't know what he'll be doing since he's won gold and that's all he's ever wanted.
