Only major nitpick I can think of is that it still is incomplete. There is still a lot of questions I want answered and yet the anime just ended(though spectacularly, it just ends...

You know, stuff like.... What will happen with the selection? Who is the Jealous Witch? Why does she hound Subaru? Is this connected somehow to why he just transported in Lugunia? What is this dragon stuff? etc. etc. Makes me wish so hard for a season 2

Though, this can be a positive to the show if you look at things differently.

Overall, it's a great piece of fiction.

I'm just 5 episodes in.....if I have to point out a flaw it has to be how everyone is an ass to the MC. I also feel a storyline with time travel can get messy. So far so good for now but I feel this could be a problem later.

The horribly written characters, especially Subaru, and the constant feeling that the Anime is trying very hard to deconstruct the genre by all means. It feels as if some pillow-clutching guy who just finished Evangelion thought "I can do that too!"

tbh I liked the show but maybe it's because i've seen so many romances, but I kind of feel like the show could do without it LMAO.

Also I think the time spent between Rem and Emilia as heroines kind of struck an imbalance in the show. Of course Emilia to did so much for Subaru, but we don't really get to see her fighting or in action or really showing MUCH emotion, albiet from yelling at Subaru for being selfish/and humiliating them both + the ending scene where she explained some of her feelings, where as Rem get's a lot of time payed attention to her back story, her emotions...everything, but then basically becomes irrelevant from the last few episodes to make room for the "true main girl" Emilia. ofc people will go overboard on Emilia vs. Rem, but I honestly was worried about literally everyone else those last 5 minutes while waiting for something bad to happen that I wasn't that touched by Emilia's big character moment- or w/e. IDK how to really solve this problem other than balancing their relevance, or maybe getting rid of Rem's little romance thing- and making them just super good friends lol ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I also think sometimes the fanbase can get a little intolerable, especially towards the beginning where literally everyone was complaining about how nothing made sense on episode 2 lol. It's kind of why I tried to stay out of tags/forums until the last few episodes bc it was ruining my general experience of the show lol. I mean, looking back, where their flaws? yes. Did it drag during some periods? yes. I personally dislike the emphasis on romance and would have taken more shots of plot relevant stuff or shots of everyone being happy (b4 instant despair lol) but it seems White Fox took a lot of time to stay as true to the LN/WN as possible as an adaptation so I think the general storyline is something you have to take up with the author bc it seems that the books feature this triangle as well so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Overall i did really enjoy this show though, and I liked waiting each week for a new episodes. I'm sad it's over : ( for rn, i wish they could have gotten 40 or 50 episodes promised instead of just 25 because i'm really thirsty for more answers.
I couldn't think of anything cool to put here.

The most irksome element of this show is its sheer pretentiousness (which is also echoed through its fanbase). It pretends to be a "compelling take" on the self-insert isekai trope and feigns the notion of being a(n) "deconstruction/subversion." It manages to accomplish this farce through cheap pandering tricks, such as running a "waifu simulator" on its entire female cast, and a blatant, cringe-worthy edginess. Wrapping a generic story in all this subterfuge herds the masses around a notion of hype and creates source material elitism the likes of which I rarely find myself seeing.

Pretty much. I never bought the whole subversion shit.

Pretty much here. I kinda don't care if there is a second season in the works or how good the show is supposed to get, I've been hearing that for the last 4 months. The only thing that has changed is that they've upped the gore and increased the melodrama. And from what I keep hearing is that is pretty much all there is in store in the future works.

That goes without saying. I felt like the protester of a civil rights sit-in at the end of every episode. I could praise most of the episode or simply question the logic of a character and before I knew it I had a page worth of innuendo and ad hominem.

Same here. Apart from the second OP I could care less about any of the OST. Most of it was blocked out by Subaru's crying, or Rem and Beetlejuice's screaming.

Subaru is motivated almost solely by saving his waifus. Much of his dialogue is also about his waifus. Every time he gets a breakdown, he rediscovers his love for them and works out better plans to save them. Give the guy more interesting motives.

Betelgeuse may be good for memes, but he's so over-the-top crazy there's no moral ambiguity here. And since Subaru is mostly heroic and altruistic, you have a pretty black and white morality going on. Some side characters might be better at this, but they barely get any screentime.

Poor pacing and moves too slowly sometimes, mostly because there's too much time spent on fight scenes and gore which, while sometimes artistic, aren't really that interesting in terms of plot advancement or character development. The mansion episodes felt especially slow. This was time that could have been spent on the royal selection or the mystery surrounding Emilia.

fucking hell this was so bad just everywhere

how do I even begin...

1) subaru is an obnoxious moron that nobody would get along with; anyone who calls him a fucking deconstruction of a LN protagonist needs to kill themselves. at least he "developed" though.

now he's just a normal generic protagonist... x fucking D

2) everything was extremely forced. terrible storytelling, terrible execution.
the conflict in the court with subaru yelling retarded nonsense at the knights? the fuck was that? and wtf was that ENTIRE scene? everyone just casually fucking walks up to subaru in the middle of a formal meeting just so that they can show he's surrounded by lots of friends or some shit?? lmao

3) what the fuck happened to felt

4) what the fuck happened to ram

5) what the fuck was puck doing the entire time

6) in other words, shit characterization and character development. literally just introduces some characters, then throws them aside. What terrible storytelling.

"best girl" rem is literally 3 different girls. and the only fucking one that got any actual screen time...

7) seriously wtf was puck doing the ENTIRE fucking time in the last arc

8) the ENTIRE last episode

that trap to kill betelguese? the hell was that??? why didn't julius just fucking come to him with subaru? or better yet, why didn't they just fucking surround his ass and kill him like they did the first time? he obviously couldn't fucking tell all his fingers were dead, so he clearly has 0 sensing abilities or whatever asspull the writer wanted to stick in

9) that bag of rocks at the end...wtf was that nuke??? LMAO. first time around it was a shitty half assed explosion, second time it was literally a mushroom cloud. holy shit this retarded inconsistency

10) deus ex machina...

just so much of it....literally seconds, they just introduce some shitty asspull to make the writers life easier. easiest example, the latest one - blondie randomly having the ability to talk to trees and animals??? seriously????

11) all subaru "fight" scenes. he does nothing. actually stands there and monologues at betelguese for a good 2 minutes before throwing shit at him.

and to try to make the fights seem hard...he gets pushed. he literally gets pushed and falls over and is like "ahhhh, that hurts!!!".

what the fuck.

I can't even write properly after watching that last episode, just needed to vent...holy shit.

the entire anime was just....disgusting too. not "shivers down my spine this is creepy" disgusting, just trash disgusting. Just a generic tale wrapped up in shitty gore as a pathetic gimmick.

the only thing remotely acceptable was the parallel between betelguese/the witch and subaru/emilia.

though I feel that may be giving far too much credit to the writer.

I mainly dislike how much of an idiot Subaru is during the early episodes (so much to the point where I dropped this show after six episodes) but I also hate the lack of subtlety, and the rather uninteresting world I was presented with. Seriously, who didn't compare the ogre story to Rem and Ram as soon as they heard it? What kind of interesting features does the world have so far? If your story does not give me any reason to watch it early on, promising that the interesting stuff will come at a later point, then I have no reason to watch it.
I'm just confused by the whole concept of scoring by "Writing and characters." If you're not entertained, why should you care?

Another issue I had with Re:Zero (althoug this one is a bit more on the subjective side, but I will still try to explain my reasoning), is the fact that I feel like it didn't really impact me in a way that was memorable.

This is mostly due to the show not really developing its story or its characters in a continuous manner. I've already mentioned how short Subaru's character development in the 3rd arc was, but most of the development other characters received was lack luster and or dropped when things began to get interesting. I understand that White Fox were attempting to make the anime adaptation to Re:Zero as close to the source material as possible, but when producing the show, you have to realize the possibility that you may not get a second season and therefore amend certain parts for the anime adaptation for it to stand on its own. If you produce a show expecting a second season, and the show isn't successful enough for one, then it only makes the first season look incomplete. I'm not saying that the entirety of Re:Zero should have been forced into one season, but they could have moved developmental points of certain characters into the first season in order to bolster its integrity as an adaptation.

Such characters like the relationship between Rem and Ram. We were hinted at their relationship with Subaru's story about the two ogres, as well as the flashback showing their tragic childhood, but that's all they get. You don't get to see how their relationship evolves in relation to their past.

The same can be said for Subaru. We know effectively nothing about his backstory, which if we look at this first season as a stand alone, is a pretty major hole left in his development.

Felt we got to see some development in the first arc, and how it translated into her behavior as a candidate which was nice, but it still could have been more fleshed out. I am especially interested in her relationship with Rom and why they have such a close bond.

Emilia's lack of development made her feel rather flat and boring, granted she didn't exist purely to suck Subaru's cock - no, that's what Rem exists for =]. But like many other characters, she spends so much time being absent through the series (especially the 3rd arc), that her character doesn't leave much of a lasting impact.

The only character who is featured consistently through Re:Zero is Subaru, and for the most part, he leaves a bad taste in my mouth more than anything.

Elsa and Betelgeuse also received no development, making them flat, one dimensional villains.

Maybe a second season will fix this, but as of right now, I can't see myself looking back on season one as a good thing (or a bad thing really, because it wasn't really bad).

TL;DR: DEVELOP YOUR FUCKING CHARACTERS. Even if it means straying away from the source material a little bit.
People who put MAL stats in their sigs are losers lol

What I disliked the most - and what keeps me from considering the anime great (9) instead of "just" very good (8) - is that it is often so damn sentimental and cliché. I didn't like that Subaru falls obsessively in love with the first beautiful girl he meets (who also happens to be extremely kind), and I didn't like that Rem does the exact same thing with him (Rem is great, don't get me wrong, but going to such lengths for someone who you have just met is a bit extreme). I didn't like that he played as large a role in some battles as he did: for example, he shouldn't have been able to evade some of Elsa's attacks, and he certainly shouldn't have been able to defeat Betelgeuse (spirit form) by himself. Without his ridiculous luck (and uncharacteristically brilliant plans), he would have died a lot more often. I also didn't like the sentimental moments in the show: the doves flying in the sunlight after Rem's monologue, the teary confession to Emilia in the sunset, the fact that people cry all the time, and so on. And I absolutely hated the use of pop music (I always do). It's so ... un-subtle. It ruins what could have otherwise been a great moment, or at least makes them seem bland and cliché.

Mostly, though, it was a very good anime. It was well-directed, the relatively realistic focus of the series (the main character has flaws, hates himself for having them, fails because of them, and so on) was refreshing, I liked how the series often had a dark, bittersweet tone and the characters (and the world in general) are interesting and all seem to have complicated backgrounds. Sure, not all of them were developed as much as they could have been, but this is only the start of the series and many characters have already made big impressions. So I'm definitely looking forward towards a second season.

Quick reaction to the finale in particular:

Wow, what was that garbage? Cliches piled on cliches, an eight minute ending of cringe-worthy on-the-nose dialogue, etc. In a show that was supposedly a 'deconstruction,' you're gonna end on one of the most standard phony love confessions ever, with a weepy-happy heroine to boot? After episode 15 (easily the peak of the series), Subaru became the boring, infallible hero character he was never supposed to be. Meanwhile, all the interesting characters were sidelined and basically contributed nothing to the overall outcome. Maybe if the show had continued and tied up just a few of the myriad loose ends it set up, I wouldn't be so baffled; however, as a self-contained season, there's no discernible point to the overall arc of the series.

Based on sheer entertainment value and a few genuinely great episodes, I can't rate it less than a 5, but it seriously took a nose dive during its second half. That was one of the worst endings relative to a show's themes I've ever seen.

Here is my list from another thread with a few changes:

Episodes 14-18: Aside from the shock value, it was repetitive. How it goes is like this 1. Rem is perfectly nice, 2. Rem dies, 3. Subaru breaks down because he is a "realistic automatically means good" MC for three episode with the fourth being a bland eyeroll (seriously Rem you spend 5 minutes on how you dreamed of your future with him). Once was good, twice is pushing it and by the third time, the shock value has worn off and I stopped caring if you're trying it again.
- The story also repeated itself from arc 2. eg ep 18 with Rem is similiar to the lap pillow with Emilia, ep 15 Subaru is broken and gives up remember Subaru staying in the libary or Subaru's outbrust to Emilia.
- Subaru in 1 episode goes from running away forever to I can do anything.
- The tone felt like it was thought "dark" and "suffering" automatically means good. eg ep 15 especially the Rem scene.
- I believe ep 15 can be correctly called melodramatic
Rem becoming bland and boring during the second half.
Cool character being introduced, but not getting enough sceentime.
Ram and Rem's hairstyles. I know it is petty but the fact the bangs just have a flat cut off bug me. Maybe that's why I can't fully like their design. Hime cuts are fine but this I just can't be on the bandwagon for.
No one (except for the villians and minor background characters) died and stayed dead. I would rathers see Subaru making the difficult choice of letting someone die for the greater good than seeing him watching Rem die over and over.
The royal election being put aside for Subaru and Rem's suffering corner.
Betelgeuse being the big bad. He is fine for a side villian, but he seem like straight out of Konosuba (which would be awsome if he was in it). To prove this look at him fly.
Al being in the series for like 10 minutes. Best boy deseres better.

Well, it feels like an insulting deconstruction of a type of anime I really like, so that kind of irked me. KonoSuba was the same way, but at least it was damn good comedy so it was really easy to forgive. Re:Zero felt more like a pretentious, nose in the air deconstruction whereas KonoSuba felt less up its own asshole but still knew what it wanted to do and put forth a lot of effort into doing it well.

Lack of Felt was awful, she was the greatest thing this show had to offer

Everybody talked about Rem as if she was great, but I didn't see much about her that interested me on a personal level. Nor did I see anything interesting about her on a general where I could at least understand where other people were coming from - Ram interested me more with the dry humor she displayed early on, but Rem never had a lot going for her; she was just kind of an extremely thirsty side bitch without much definition past that. She's devoted and does a lot more for Suburu than Emilia does, but what else is interesting about her personally? Her backstory wasn't something I found particularly sad or sympathetic, even if I got why it'd hurt both her and Ram so much. When she did anything it was mostly just for Suburu's sake, putting him up on this extremely high pedestal, without ever really showing much about herself past she really wanted his dick inside of her. Why is she so popular? I mean, normally I don't mind this kind of thing. I tend to enjoy it, even, but this show didn't rely on other aspects that makes Isekai entertaining to me, they were near absent because this show tried so hard to be realistic instead of being an idealistic and fantasy-like storybook. It clearly really wanted to be more character focused than the average Isekai, so what about this character is so good? I wouldn't dislike her so much if this wasn't a deconstruction, truth be told.

And why did Suburu even like Emilia so much to begin with? Why is that his endgame? On more than one occasion, Rem did the exact same thing she did, if not better than she did, but Suburu is just so far up her asshole that he couldn't even recognize that her devotion was shit. She just giggled and smiled sometimes and got mad sometimes. Hell, I don't like Rem very much and she offered Suburu so much more than Emilia did.

It also felt like his raging boner for Emilia made Suburu hold the idiot ball a bunch of times. The scene where he declared himself her knight at the gathering thing in particular was absolute cringe because of how stupid he acted, and not even a funny cringe. I felt so much secondhand embarrassment for the guy, even though he acted like an idiot.

Overall, I gave it a 7/10. I enjoyed watching it, but there was a lot about it that annoyed me as well. Sometimes I found myself imagining things it could do that I think would make it less irritating or more interesting. It did a good job at capturing my imagination and there were quite a few characters I actually enjoyed, so I'd be hard pressed to say I had a bad time watching it, but it was just...so much blech at some parts.

- except for Subaru, Rem there is no development for other characters
- associated with this ; no time for others characters
- what going on with episode 12-13? election shouldn't look like this
- when, why MC fall in so deep-lavu-lavu with silverhair girl?
- there is a lot of unsolved thread
- open ending... pretty slothful WF
- some scheme-break wasn't a good idea ( fortunately the most part is)
- unstable level from 12 to 25 episode
- sometimes im really was embarrassed, cause of MC and must click "pause" in the half episode...

Despite this, i probably could mention more pros than cons, so that why i gave it 9/10.

I swear to god i dont get it, I dont get the hype surrounding this show. I feel like this will eventually become like the new SAO where there is just such a divide in the community in terms of its quality.

Re:Zero stumbles early on but manages to prop itself back up in the middle but then falls apart worse then ever before. The characters are annoying, bland given useless backstories and most of them are just introduced to feel up the screen and i can compare Subaru and Emilia's Romance to Anakin and Padme's from the Star wars prequel trilogy, where Subaru would constantly go back for Emilia and i could never think of a reason why or but Subaru could think of 2000 apparently (kill me). The action for what its worth does look good but im a story and character guy mostly so if it has great action every now and then but im not invested it just looks like money wasted. Also the fact that they havent even hinted at why Subaru is in the world just pisses me of cause i feel like there should be a reason and whenever something interesting starts to happen or is hinted at the show completely ignores it (Subaru being pride but just being like nah). The villains are extremely weak, not threatening and not given as much screen time as they should have been so they can properly develop so when the characters are scared over the edge lord Betelguese you dont understand why cause he is kind of funny. Also due to semi cliched nature of the last third of the show you can just predict the final outcome.

Sound was fine but nothing to memorable for me not gonna waste time on it.

By the end of the show when Subaru died i wish he stayed dead and the show would end, but i was not so lucky. This review is all over the place and not very formal but this is just me letting my unfiltered, not spell checked and formatted opinions out there.

If you like Re:Zero thats fine, i know im in the minority but to me personally it represents what is wrong with not only the anime medium, fans and culture but basic story telling across all forms of entertainment

Honestly, the predictability of the story in general. The overall premise at the beginning sounds interesting, for one, I got hooked at the first episode. But they kinda overkill the ability to return by death. This, in addition to the fact that the director/author is too self indulgent in the sense that whenever ANYTHING goes wrong/not perfect, you know for a fact that Subaru will have to return by death. Once you starts seeing this, the story line gets immediately boring. In fact, one could argue that everything can be seen as filler once you recognized that Subaru will die for sure whenever he is faced with a new/strange circumstances.

While some people would say I'm wrong and autistic for even thinking that some episodes could be considered fillers when in fact, it reveals a lot about the characters and showing indirect character development. Let's face it though, would the anime really be that much worse off without it? Imo, they wanted to include those part to add realism to the story and that's not wrong, but back to my main point, they overkill it and becomes rather a waste of time to watch it.

My overall rating of this show is a 2/10. Before everyone tries to flame me for it, I would just like to say that I couldn't find the appeal of this show. To be completely honest, without glossing over anything, I feel like this is just another SAO shitstorm. Only reason why it is not a 1 is cuz I find the animation pleasant to watch and that's about it.

I hated the loli Beatrice simply because I hate lolis.

I hate the gay ass cat boy because I hate traps

I hate subaru for being weak, obnoxious, stupid

I hate Emilia for being stereotypical female mc

I hate that we didnt get to see Reinhard fight

I hate that the piece of shit witch never appeared

They did not even explained how subaru got transferred to that world

Why are the candidates to become the ruler or a country little ass girls?

What is this world anyways? we dont know shit

Really the only part that I really enjoyed was the White Whale battle.

Only the middle portion was decent (around when Betlegeuse was introduced). Beginning was a snoozefest and the final arc was a trainwreck. Ending was lame as heck. Friends promised me that Subaru gets better but he was a degenerate pos all the way through. Opening theme wasn't even that good. There are much better waifus elsewhere too.

Looks like White Fox won't ever top Katanagatari.

No complains, nothing to dislike either. I enjoyed it thoroughly and thankful I get to watch it for free.

But I probably dislike it mainly because of fanbase. It's just... too much hype from them for me and that gets annoying to the point where I'm just done with the series overall

You took the words out of my mouth. I always felt Re Zero was overhyped and overrated (not saying it is a bad show).

Gave it an 8/10 overall, but brought my score down for a few reasons :-

I wasn't too keen on how quickly Subaru started bouncing back and forth between being completely fucked up in the head to being perfectly fine again. I started to dislike him in the mid-teens when he became an insufferable asshole, but I became more accepting of it when he started showing signs of being mentally unstable; that scene in the village where he doesn't even realise there's tons of slaughtered people all around him until he physically fell over one worked very well in that regard. His cognitive dissonance suddenly came to a head there, and his previous rash actions made sense, retroactively.
But then he dies once, and suddenly does a 180 because he has new information now. Na it's K that everyone died, I'm back and better than ever! Up until that point, it had taken him what, 15? episodes of dying and starting over with his mental state slowly deterioriating. I specifically mention one comment in the first few episodes, where someone had forgotten who he was because of the time reset. Little comments like that sort of foreshadowed what was going to happen to him if he kept dying and resetting all the time; the constant effects of them would obviously get to him.

But for the entirety of that to be thrown away by a single death - and then later on by a single 10 minute conversation with Rem - seemed dumb. It seemed like a waste of all that buildup. You don't just get mentally broken and then be like "Na it's all a fucking laugh mate, s'all good!" after experiencing such dissonance that you were wholly unaware of dozens of dead people around you.

My other issue would be the intense infatuation Rem felt towards Subaru - it seemed far too exaggerated for someone that, on her end, had known Subaru for only a handful of weeks or so. This point I'm willing to concede on a little because it's hard to remember just how much time actually passed in the anime inbetween all the resets, but that conversation where Rem was talking about how she imagines going off into the village with Subaru, getting married and having kids and whatnot....Na. That ain't the type of shit you imagine with someone that you've known for a handful of weeks, or up to two months at best. I can see reasons for why she would have begun to feel infatuated with Subaru but nowhere close to that extent.

I also feel in a similar vein towards Subaru feelings aimed at Emilia, although at least from his perspective he's easily spent many weeks being with Emilia and then simply having it reset again. It wouldn't be so bad here if Emilia wasn't absent for so damn long.
It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether!

Too much hype for an average series which in the future there will be many similar titles with this sort of plot

-All of the characters that got any depth focused on them were written horribly
-Every other character has their personality that defines them and nothing else
-Animation quality heavily dropped from episodes 1-3 and never got as good(in fact it got progressively worse) until episode 25
-Arc 1 was just 3 episodes of fantasy thriller, Arc 2 was the only good arc and it wasn't for the story it was for the characters, Arc 3 was shit
-Sound design was meh
-Tried to act like it was so cool and subverting and deconstructing shit but it didn't actually do any of that and was just standard isekai fantasy world with a character that someone actually tried to write instead of leaving him as a blank slate. Even if they did write him terribly.
-The only thing you can care about is the conflict Subaru is in during the other time-lines and he's a fuckwit so I can't care about him.
every single one of my forum posts is dumb and invalid except for 1, I don't claim them it was a different person it was all fake

Things I didn't like/annoyed me:
- Subaru was really annoying/unlikable until like the last 5 or so episodes of the series
- Emilia was hinted to have some sort of backstory, but never got one
- We never got to learn who the witch truly was or why/how Subaru got into this world, but we did hear that her voice sounded a lot like Emilia's
- Too little was explained about the whole election, because Subaru interrupted everything
- Too little screentime of Reinhardt!
- No alternative ending with Rem, like in the novel. Hopefully we'll get an OVA...

By the way, when was this 'shipping of characters' stuff created? ... Why do people ship? Guess it's just something simpler for most to understand? To discuss about? "Oh, this character is more this, more that... I prefer this one- I think this one fits that other character well!" Eh.

I'm fine with shipping because it doesn't necessarily have to be canon and it has never ruined a series for me. I find it hilarious sometimes as well. I've personally never shipped either.
