I still don't like the way Subaru is in the last 3 episodes. The jump from nice, lovable, caring guy to selfish, arrogant and full on asshole dude is way too steep.

You just have to understand the subtle development towards this current state with the information you got from this episode.

Ever since episode 8's lap pillow scene Subaru unconsciously and subtly built up this obsession towards Emilia. Remember when he said that he thought Emilia would understand him? That's from this particular scene in episode 8. This started to progress his obsession.

It took a crazy level when she got way out of his reach through that entire election event. His safe haven distanced itself from him and so he became extremely angsty and acted without much thought.

Now that she is completely gone and actually made this perfect image of her in his head crack he spirals downwards to insanity which becomes clear through the extreme case of escapism and delusion.

I do like the way you present subaru's developpment here and in an other post. I wonder if you got a better insight because you read the novel, it might be easier then to understand this.

How ever good the reasons are though, it's still hard for me to cheer on a character who is so weak that he broke into an easily hatable nuisance. Some break and become depressed and one wish them to get well soon, but subaru breaks and becomes arrogant, thickheaded, stupid, aggressive, violent, "delusional" ... in one word despicable and one wish him not to get well soon but to get beaten even more with the hope it would give him back some sense of reality.

In the end it's all a matter of taste of course, but subaru is not simply too weak, his weakness makes him become a real loser on the human level. Some prefer loser's struggle stories, others prefer hero's struggle stories. I'm more one of the latter which is why I have a problem with the last developments.

I'm surprised that some people don't see how Subaru not grasping the situation he is in nor learning from last episode is a sign for his mental illness. He is literally mentally broken right now which results in this lost sense of reality.

He has become fanatic in his idea of reality, his idea of truth that he rejects everyone who tries to deny that truth.

On the one side the words of Emilia resonate in his head and keep bringing him down to reality but on the other side Subaru lives in denial towards the truth. This clearly show us that this whole obsession with Emilia is no mere quirk in his personality no it actually has reached a scale where you can call it a mental illness. He rejects anything that goes against his own truth and even the people themselves. He interprets others' attempts at trying to keep him safe as shortsighted or that they think nothing of him. And not only that, he justifies it all by reasons that no one else will ever trust. No one can believe in that or even cares enough about Emilia to be her ally. Note how every person who tried to talk against his own beliefs got majorly rejected by him. Reinhard…Kadomon ( Apple merchant ), Crusch & Ferris and at last Rem. Personally I love that development or rather the negative development as this is how humans are sometimes, especially in a mentally unstable condition. They become stubborn and don’t give up on their belief until they have to pay a prize for it. Of course this is taken to an extreme level in anime but it replicates a natural development.

You can actually see how he starts to develop some kind of escapism when he walks through the village. Subaru opens the door the first time how there is a corpse sitting in the chair but Subaru just stares at it and closes the door. The second door he opens bumps against a corpse. You can hear the foot steps walking through blood. In these very first seconds Subaru lives in denial to what actually has happened here. He started to develop some sort of escapism but got knocked out of it once he physically interacted with one of the corpses and perceived the horror around him completely.

I don't want you to misunderstand this for any prejudicial cherry picking but as you have compared & evaluated a real world epidemic. With decades of long & subjectively diverse etymology and literature - To a pseudo reality with spontaneous yet emotionally intelligent characteristics, features & most importantly 'adaptations'.

There is a few points that may (or may not) perhaps be educational to your aforementioned comments that seem to be contradicting your claims and not treating the anime with the respect, you have mentioned to enjoy, overall. So based on my understanding, in regards to your mediocre accusations, I must also express my discernment towards vague & irrational contributions towards your comments & overall review that lacks conceptual & inconceivable consensus.

Sadly In my most humble opinion, that it must be treated as something that goes beyond the norm and realm of mere opinions or reviews. Would you consider my implications to be credible that judges you from one comment? Should I now conclude that you suffer from or present symptoms that closely resemble Narcissistic Personality Disorder? Or would you prefer an irresponsible 'diagnosis' & an on-going treatment plan for Borderline Personality Disorder?

But I could also, just accept that it's just your way of thinking & just treat this as a mistake stemming from the lack of understanding, on a prevalent stigmatic & despairingly stereotypical - buzz-word; namely 'mental illness'. Of course, not forgetting that the classifications are exclusive to the person involved.

We all inevitably have our own retrospective biases. It's fine, I mean we could condition or rewire our thoughts and regulate our emotions through mere respiration of two well known gases, simple right? Or oppositely we can just find our self in a situation with no experience or knowledge on how to handle or respond to the given situation/s. That's the whole beauty of the mysterious & unpredictable way of life. However I believe even with perspective & speculation, there must be certain limitations & sensitivity, especially when judging a situation with no understanding or clue of a character that has a sudden appearance in an unknown world. That convenient point is most of our starting point?

One must consider, especially within this context of the authors innovative imagination & creative writing before such a conclusive review. This novel/manga creates such opportunities for unique emotional empathy & cognition. With such diversely complex variations it is a laughable to be able to Identify - Classify the generalised notion of 'mental health', in which you have pointed out numerous times.

Try to acknowledge these points, that may enhance your approach to criticality & future judgements.

Before reflecting on fictional characters, try reflecting on your own incompetencies. If this is possible, then at least try to use the fictional comparisons, to your own past and present responses to situations?

Mental Illness as a whole is a very problematic & fragile aspect of our life, we constantly shift between thoughts and emotions, responding to different situations, that in most cases are completely opposites. Try to be more sensitive and enjoy an anime, with more conceptually relative comments.

Not much happened to get me into this one.

Catboy dressed like a girl JPOP idol with the voice of a 40 year old woman. Uh? Comic relief!
Reinhard being a bro. Seriously, real MC material here.
Sub being a jerkwad. Way to blow off your savior punk.
Sub sucking at wood duel. Give it up chump.
Sub whining about Emilia. Rem is more worth it!
Rem being a lovely and loyal maid.
Sub being dumb

Then...

Rem is dead?!
Really, they love making the one they build up die first.

Yay next episode something happens!

Anyone notice how many people were trying to help Suburu but he kept ignoring them and taking their concern as pity and them looking down on him.

-It started with Emilia first telling him to stay in the city

-We then find out that Julius was indirectly trying to protect him (likely knew what enemies will come after emilia and tried to discourage suburu through humiliation thinking he was smart enough to come to the conclusion he could never protect her from the type of enemies that she would be facing.)

-The butler guy tries to make him see that his actions aren't making him stronger, but rather entrenching him in his foolish behaviour.

-Rem tries to convince him to stay and heal and keeping in mind their recent argument, tells Suburu that those are Emilia's orders, which he ignores.

-Crusch tries threatening him into submission and it doesn't work, he instead once again, believes people are against him. In the same conversation he projects this insecurity onto Emilia and says "only we (him and rem) can be at her side".

-The cat dude tries to remind him of the embarrassment and beating he went through in another attempt to make him see reason and heal, but he simply refused to do so.

-Rem is eventually forced to abandon him at the hotel, leaving him in an area she knows that it will be hard to get transport (he had to go to a lot of people just to be able to find someone willing to go there). He then comes to the conclusion Rem doesn't understand him and abandoned him as useless as well.

-Otto tries a last ditch effort to get him to turn back, stating his ground dragon knew that something dangerous was up ahead, another warning he ignored.

And he's so out of his mind it takes him a long time to realize what happened despite seeing the carnage in the two houses. Suburu's mental state is an all time low and it seems like he is beyond recovery at this point.

The number of people that tried to help him out of genuine concern is staggering, even people who didn't know him know staked their reputation to protect him. The worst part is that he cannot see it from their point of view, something you'd think he'd understand after the encounter with Emilia (people not knowing he can come back from the death will obviously try to avoid putting him in dangerous situations). The show does an awesome job of convey how messed up Suburu is mentally and I hope it keeps going this way.

There is a source material for this series, if you're unaware. Fappa has read it.

You seem to have increased your post size unnecessarily, eh. But I guess you considered necessary to make it fancy.

Subaru was a loser in reality. Subaru was a winner in fantasy. Subaru was brought to fantasy, that was actually reality. Subaru lost to reality, that looked like fantasy. Subaru denied his loss, and forced himself to win. By being aided by a gift.

To deny reality and escape into fantasy, is what we consider escapism. This escapism harms his mind. And it leads him to harm his body. It originates from the mind. It's then considered a mental illness.

iRels

Hmm. Feedback appreciated, I'll have the word length confirmed for next time, but I’ll pass this once. What you have completely blind folded your eyes to is that, any individual who feels sensitive to witnessing pure ignorance towards this term will probably understand what I tried to mean in without a specific focus, as it had no direct accusations. I also simultaneously, tried to link the level of irrelevant factors considered, assumed & concluded as a 'casual' comparison, and that it simply lacked clarity, which is also discussed and clearly justified.

You have an interesting idea of 'fancy' words, but although your short summary is likewise, it explains nothing at all or provides anything I could genuinely debate – For example your description of Subaru is short but your just repeating yourself. I do not recall to accusing his reading list or history but his method of evaluation that just makes matters worse if he has actually accessed the source material? I personally did not disregard the possibility of dissatisfaction, its fine to hate or dislike anything about certain episodes, chapters, scenes etc. That had not met his expectations but it seemed more of a conclusion & like skipping the shallows and diving in to the deep ocean to me. If I really did misunderstand his explanation or clarifying would have been suffice. Not a defence statement from a random member or whatever relationship you have with him.

You should have at least made a solid point - You are basically implying that the source material presents character development of the so-called blind eye/ignorance towards reality and or distortions between fantasy and reality. You also confirm his earlier comment and somehow attribute that to real-world issues, linking it to a controversial & ever more stigmatic medical term, interesting.

It just goes to show that you have not considered what I have (at least put effort in to explaining) and just tried to reverse the odds or redirect the attention. Despite me explaining the underlying conditions for off-context comment, you have just demonstrated an even worse understanding and attitude towards the term and its bizarre application for a fictional anime character within a quiet reasonable margin to consider (even in the real-world) a response to 'stress'.

I take time to both understand and clearly deliver something I believe to be wrong, as it will be nothing more than spreading hate and favouritism. I also try to avoid any meaningless emotional comments. If everyone were to think the way you did, then I’m assuming that everyone, everywhere could experience anything disguised or manifested as a Medical Illness rather their natural response and or adaption to varying situations.

By the way I appreciate the recognition of my “fancy” predicament, I would have not known otherwise. But it really isn’t fancy to label a fictional character as a loser and mentally ill individual; as it makes no sense with the prevalence in popularity & ratings for - He is the MC? So regardless of what you think of him, it does not change the figures. By the way, who told you that losers aren't cool? Or are more prone to be mentally ill? Are winners mentally stable?

Criticise my point, that's fine, I'm up for a debate/discussion but try to focus your attention more appropriately.

That's not what he was doing though. He was going there to assist and Rem and the village like he did in last arc. There is nothing wrong with that. If not for him taking action in moment several people would not be alive today like Rem who needed to be rescued after reckless going after the demon dogs by herself.

Besides he needs to know whats going to do anything. You don't need to be an expert fighter to save people. Your knowledge can be used prevent such thing from happening in the first place can do just that.

I get that he needs to be there in order to know what's going on, but the matter of the village is a different story. Back then, he enlisted the help of Ram to go together into the forest which I was totally fine with. He did his part well as a decoy.

However in this scenario, he was recklessly intending on solving this problem by himself to prove that he is all that Emilia needs out of an idiotic sense of self-righteousness. If he suspected something, it would have made much more sense for him to ask for someone with strength (i.e. Reinhard) to come along in case shit gets bad. Going by himself is just suicide, but the main problem is that Subaru isn't consciously thinking of "okay I'll go once to gather info and if I die it's no big deal since I can restart with my newfound knowledge". He is overconfident to think that he can solve this issue alone.

Right, but my point is that his reason for doing are understandable. That is how he solved the other issues. He's past successes him to put everything on his shoulders and it's difficult let go of that because he doesn't know what else to do.

Wow, Crusch-sama is really a cutie in her casual clothes. I think I like her. Also Horie Yui is doing cat again? I'm sold :D

But main character surely grew egoistic and selfish, you can tell something is very wrong with him just by listening to his seiyuu and he is also thinking mainly of himself.. witch influence maybe?

The OP was great! Better than the first one and we can already tell that Emilia is main goal of Jealous witch.. too bad Subaru only helped her getting more and more grief by the quarrel.

Rem x Subaru moment was precious.. but the ending... that was harsh (since right now we still don't know is Return by Death works here and now). I only wish they can be healed somehow.. would be bad if we have to repeat last arc here.

Well it was pretty obvious Subaru would fuck up again but I didn't think it'd actually be worse than what happened last episode.

I wonder how long it'll be before he finally realizes he's not some super powered hero and stop acting like the arrogant prick he is.

He might be the most unlikable MC I've seen in an anime in quite some time. His constant blunders and increasing insanity are becoming more and more annoying. I'm mostly intrigued by EVERYBODY around him and their motivations. The witch/dragon etc...Unfortunately I have to see it through the eyes of Subaru.

Subaru still acting like the retard he was last episode. I get it, he's going a little nutty because of everything he's been through but you can't expect me to believe he's not fully aware of his actions. When he mentioned about Emilia getting mad at him to Rem in the hotel, Subaru knows his choices are stupid. Thankfully the ending scene seemed to have brought him back to his senses. As much as I am saddened to see Rem like that, it was important for Subaru to experience ultimate despair. Emilia leaving him may affect him greatly but she is still alive, I would assume so, at least.

Now... What the hell happened to the village and Rem at the end there? I saw a bit of white fog too. After a couple slower episodes it's nice to get back into the grind.

Subaru's obsession with Emilia must be planted by the witch who brought him there otherwise it just seems unreasonable for him to be like this even if he died so many times.

MC's a suicidal maniac at this point, best girl also died, so better kill yourself to save them. Would be hilarious if he wakes up in the inn, then I hope he'd go exploring like a normal person would do rather than be attached to all this stressful crap caused by being around an half elf.

What's with the MC? He thinks too highly of himself even though he's a delusional, pathetic loser! He so needs a reality check and follow the advice people are giving him. If he stayed in the Crusch's mansion, Rem would've been alive. Prolly cant say the same about Emilia, Ram, etc.. in the other mansion... but point is, REM WOULDVE BEEN ALIVE!!

Subaru is getting to my nerves!!!

More should've been unveiled there.

In this episode, Subaru himself asked Rem whether she considers him a pathetic loser. Not sure how much I've to tell you... But he said before that 'hot guys' have it easy. So, he compares himself with dudes more successful with girls. He said that it's been a long time that he had been intimate with a girl. He has been working hard, as he said, like he never did before, in this new life. He was unhappy in the real world. But games should've made him happy.

Escapism he already had. Because it didn't seem like he was working on confronting his issues. More like that had given up. Sighing and looking down. As Crusch referred to, in this episode. He was already doing it at the grocery store.

But in this world he couldn't accept that he'd not succeed. He clearly didn't want to give up on Emilia - the first girl in years, that's shown him kindness. Why did he sigh at the couple in the grocery store? Why does he calls Emilia 'Major Fairy/Angel'? She's saved in ways, yeah... What I think is the case, is that she might've restored his faith in girls. I've a theory about some love interest disappointing him. He not blaming himself, but her, for not recognizing his qualities. Of being a good, trusthworthy person and such. But it appears that those qualities are something he grabbed on to, for seeing them as the most valuable aspects of him. Without them, he'd consider himself worthless. As what would stand more in him, otherwise, would be flaws.

Criticise my point, that's fine, I'm up for a debate/discussion but try to focus your attention more appropriately.

xD People probably identify themselves with Subaru. Even if not with all of him. They've been saying that he was some shut-in gamer. Those should be common nowadays. Games are really enjoyable, heh.

Well I don't mind Subaru being who he is. He's prideful at least. That's why... yeah. I'd not enjoy someone that accepts themselves as a loser. Subaru isn't doing so. Because such a person would have no potential, you know. They'd not improve.

At the scene with Wilhelm, he held on to his gift. As Wilhelm pointed out (due to how perceptive the old man is), Subaru had considered giving up on getting stronger, and instead, simply rely on the gift. That wasn't admirable of him, heh. But he was desperate to find some value in himself, it seemed. And it was to be considered needed by a person he cares much about... Giving up on Emilia, I imagine that would be like a black mark in his past. A permanent defeat. A bad memory that would make him sad. And it'd be really significant... Because he considers her too valuable, eh. Why does he values Emilia's goodness so much, huh? Must be because he devalues badness to the same extent. Like I said, someone he cared for might've done him what he considered evil...

A character like Aldebaran doesn't minds Priscilla much. Even though she's shown to be quite evil. She might be too complex for Subaru. So what's more apparent in a person like her, is goodness. It's what he considered she's done for him. But she was just using him for her own amusement. He didn't see that... Shows how naive he is.

Yeah, goodness must be much more obvious for a person as undeveloped as Subaru appears to be. Must be one of the reasons why Emilia caused him such an effect. Man, he even misjudged Crusch. She was wanting him good. She said that she didn't want to consider him a weak adversary and such. She's honorable. Instead, he thinks she was being condescending to him.

The rest of what you said I think I've already considered. That's why I find it unnecessary, eh. So, what do you think of Subaru? Perhaps an analysis is wanted. What it seemed that we and Fappa have been doing, is simplify Subaru's condition so people have an easier time understanding what's happening. And he fits as an escapist. Also as someone with inferiority complex.

By the way, it's Fai that appears to be the narcissistic one. But I guess that's obvious enough.

The thing that makes that hard to go by is just the fact there are many MCs who go through the lengths we've seen, granted they don't go through the prospect of mutilation over and over.

So the magi bowed to Subaru.

Nah...He's got that same obsession when he tried to get Rem. He got that Main character complex where he feels everything important event is related to him and has the duty to protect all cute girls around him. That is why the disdain everyone gives for being weak and useless is hurting him a lot.

Holy shit the (very edgy) OP is STILL pushing Subaru/Emilia as the pairing. The glimpse of what seems to be new villain(?) does not inspire confidence as his design looks liek something that ran away from Akame Ga Kill. The end of op pretty much is biggest hint at Emilia being Satella too. Overall the OP is not as good as the first one. First one had very nice beat and great visuals that reminded me of Steins;Gate. This is just...edge?

UHHHH, Subaru keeps being a pile of human trash. Ever since Ep11, he is easily most despicable character of the year and it seems he LEARNED ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Even Shinji Ikari had more capability to progress from his experiences. And Shinji Ikari had A LOT MORE REASONS to be a regressive asshole.

What's worse is that other characters have to suffer for Human Waste MC not learning his lesson. I am sad for Rem having to put up with his bullshit. But hey maybe their interactions will make him actually learn to not be a despicable scumbag, considering nothing seems to make him learn.

I thought we will see more progress on the political scene and the candidates interacting. I thought we will see Subaru having to own up to the bullshit he pulled.

And instead he went to meet other candidate waifus and woo them. But now it seems are abandoning even all of that FOR THE SUFFERING GUYSE. Because that's TOTALLY why we are watching the show, right?

Should I care that Subaru is involved in this mess now? Should I worry for his fate? Does show expect me to want him to succeed? Because right now is what i am dreading is him succeeding without being owned.

Holy shit was the end of episode edgy, down to rock ost.

3/5

Holy shit dude, i mean, do you have any human empathy at all, based on what you wrote i come to think you are a criminal or something.

Pretty sure you're the pile of human trash if you're unable to stand into someone else's position.

Easy to talk when you're unaffected isn't it?
