Wow... just wow. This was easily the BEST episode so far.

Honestly was I the only one trying to figure out who the spy was during the whole episode? Also I fucking LOVE how this series manages to give you small clues but still make you feel lost until the end where they mention literally the last piece of information missing and the whole thing starts to make sense. It's so satisfying.
The way everything was handled also shows a different side to these guys, it shows that they don't need to do everything by themselves but just put some influence here and there to make things go their way.

By the way, the spy this episode was Fukumoto for those that don't know.

This doesn't really have anything to do with thinking. The spies didn't get a decent introduction making it harder for viewers to remember them AND their faces actually look similiar. Also this episode was kind of meh - I didn't really care about the whole (rather obvious) mystery and this episode's spy appeared for such a short amount of time. I'm beginning to doubt whether this "1 spy / 1 episode" formula was a good idea ;/

You do realize they are SPIES right? I mean the whole point is that they're not supposed to stand out.

It's your fault for thinking this is a normal anime where you can differentiate spies by how badass one is or how cool the other looks like. They have no clear personality because that is irrelevant to their jobs, there's a reason they don't have names.

Another one that doesn't understand what the series is about. You should probably go back to SnK or something.

As spy thrillers go, this isn't very exceptional. While I do like the series for not being the usual crap we get every season, the writing is only slightly above average. There doesn't seem to be much focus on one character or anything for that matter. Really hoping this gets better.

well all of you guys complaining about you dont know who the spy is ? well thats how a spy is supposed to be. dont expect this anime to be one of these standard anime where you follow one guy the whole time and basically know what hes doing or will do.

this episode was ok. didnt like the conclusion with this "i take revenge". could have been something more interesting and twisted. though is still enjoiyed it.

I feel racist for saying this, but all the spies look the damn same. I like the premise of the show but I feel I miss out on some of it because I'm trying to figure out who the spy is the whole time hahaha. Once I realized it was the reporter, everything kind of clicked. I hope there's some sort of over-arching story though... this episodic feel is meh.

All those spy fuckers from the D-agency and regular characters look the same. How am I ever supposed to tell who is the spy in the episodes -_-. I mean last episode it was obvious, however, I still didn't know the guys "name," since all the spies look alike anyways.

I find it exactly the way it's supposed to be. The secrecy behind the characters adds up to them looking alike. I think that the ultimate idea behind this series is for you not to tell who is who, or even follow up to it, it's more of giving you the feeling of a twist in the story. I find it that the way they do this (in general) is intelligent.

That said, the revenge part had me a bit confused, nonetheless doesn't change the fact that it was a great episode overall.

I was reading some comments and I can't be more in disagreement. I like this episode, like I do with the other ones. The most significant in this anime isn't characters. The thing you must be aware is story. You must look for any detail you could overlook if you don't pay attention, discover who is the spy among characters presented in each chapter and try to know before it's said who is the traitor or the killer, all this things are the main purpose of this anime. Don't worry about names. They aren't important. At least, at the moment it isn't important. Maybe later you will learn their names, but you don't need it right now. At least that's my impression.
As I said, I really like this anime. It's treated some taboo topics in a serious anime, like this, and that's a big plus point in my opinion. I will continue watching this anime only looking for a good story. <3

Episode's better than the previous. Although I couldn't point out the spy, there was an interesting mix of elements used in the main villain and story (those faces he pulled were amazing) and the ending was a bit intense. I liked that there was a little more to the setting this time as well.

I really need to study episode one by learning all of the names of the trainees as well as what they look like because for the longest I was very lost as to why we were following these people xD

Good episode overall tho....Dat yaoi tho lol

Same XD I forgot all of the names and what they looked like. The fact that I thought the opening had like 4 guys at different angles and it was like about 12 in all that looked similar, I am going to struggle knowing who is who.

I think this is the best episode I've seen so far. (The second will be the first two episodes hehe / Joker Game Parts 1 & 2) The story was great, how "Kusanagi" lead Homma was a great way to reveal a plot twist. It does have some of its flaws, for example; I went WTF towards the end wherein the other officer killed their captain for vengeance. I wish they gave light to his "lover" more in order for viewers to understand. Overall, I'm looking forward to watch the next episode next week. :D Two thumbs up!

This episode wasn't as good as last episode because there wasn't any focus at the spy. There was nothing I learnt at all about him :( and even now I still don't know his name. I can barely remember who this dude is and I think it would have been nicer if they focus a bit on the spy's perspective.

Yeah it was. The whole thing kind of disgusted me and had me doubt for a second if he is truly his lover since it looked more like prostitution :( but we will never know since he's dead. The young ladyboy also prostituted himself to the crazy superior >_> and was probably paid to shoot the guy that was tailoring someone in the beginning of the episode but then ultimately got killed in the end coz the damn superior bombed his own house.

I'll remember him as Reporter Spy, the same way the last episode's spy was French Spy. I just hope that they don't bring them all back for the final episode because the art style isn't helping me at all to recognize them.

At first the fact somebody died already reminded me of "Don't Kill. Don't be killed", so I discarded that guy as Spy. After, when I got suspicious of the boss, I was "but he killed people". Then when he got mad I was "ohhh is a broken spy". And it was none of that. Nice touch.

By the way, the main site hasn't updated to remind us where this episode takes place, but it's after 1937, where the Battle of Shangai took place and Japan conquered that capital. It's interesting that they added this historical context to the story. A lot of people feels that Japan gets too victimized by Hiroshima, and they remind us that Japan did a lot of atrocious things too.

What I don't get clearly is how he inferred the tatooed boy was a prostitute (based on the episode's evidence, not historical).

Cool episode. Some problems about how the shots were composed and whatnot, and I understand if the "find the spy" game annoys people, but I enjoyed nonetheless.

@rayeine The spy is revealed. He gives the lead about who is in charge of the explosions

I like Joker Game. I like the realism a lot. I also enjoy the mystery, though not completely.

Problem for me is that I don't know the spies. They're just blank faces to me. I feel no sense of satisfaction when they accomplish stuff cos I don't even know what they've done or planned until it's all over...

Then again, I'm not sure that's what this anime's about. Will reserve further judgment for when more episodes are released.

I'm pretty sure it was Kusanagi who slipped the coin into the Main guy's pocket when he bumped into him.

Seems to me that Reporter Spy and Kusanagi were in cahoots with each other ie Reporter Spy tips Main Guy about Kusanagi so that he'd follow Kusanagi to the casino

Also, the prostitute kid he saw at the casino had a similar tattoo, which is how Main guy made the deduction.

What I don't get is who Kusanagi is???

The Reporter Spy and Kusanagi are not "in cahoots with each other", they are actually one and the same guy (http://myanimelist.net/character/137449/Fukumoto). You notice that when he removes his spectacles in the end.

Pretty much my feelings on the episode. I'd only add that there wasn't enough "real" spy action. I like to see the cool guys do stuff rather than just watch some dude walk around town looking at stuff and then pulling an explanation for it all out of his ass.

Didn't like this episode. For an anime that's supposedly about spies, there was just so little screen time on the actual spy (by the time I had recognized him).

Is the series going to stay episodic?

It's just such a shame because the anime started off with a great first episode. It may be too early to judge, though.

Pardon my English, It's Fukumoto one of the 8 spies, so if you watch the 3rd eps, on the last part after the preview there is a conversation between 2 spies and as the eps going this far we can see it since the 1st eps XD
and also you might want to read this quote

if only there was an theme tying all the episodes together, yeah they're spies, but each of their stories look totally unrelated from the others

this episode was quite confusing for me, the main focus, that guy who was asked to look for a spy, was acting very unnaturally, like when he finds out his captain was the culprit, why did he go to tell him? and not report it to an higher ranked officier?
then the captain reason for acting being: lol i'm crazy
and the other guy killing him...

so much wtf, and it was all so contrived (and the general pacing and dialogue reactions felt wacky)

agree, their interactions in the first 2 episodes were more interesting and amusing
looks like all the premise of the training school for spies, and the "joker game" as a training, got tossed out of the window for now (or by now)
it would be good to see more episodes of them all coming back and just interacting when they're not into a mission
