It's just fan pandering.

In terms of raw power, no one revealed in the HxH universe so far can match the Chimera King. He's pretty much God-tier. Maybe Gon who has potential in the future but not now.

the thing that struck me was the purpose of showing phantom troupe abilities particularly , or even was there any purpose at all...most likely togashi wanted to give us some clue about what to expect next

i read the arc long ago and probably forgot most of the details ... but whatever, watching the last 2 episodes i believe togashi wanted to establish something that only phantom troupe could prove

phinks won because of raw power (not his peak power )
Bonolenov won by summoning jupiter size sound wave , raw power
Shalnark became kind of super saiyan , raw power
kalluto , well that was his ability , was there any strategy involved ?
faitan , he won plain summoning a sun like object , not much strategy but huge raw power
Shizuku could suck blood , won by the raw power mostly

the thing is gon and gang has less crazier abilities compared to raw power of summoning sun, jupitar, sucking blood and their powers has more likely to do with mixing up strategies (remember morel+knuckle vs cheetu ? )
so when even higher level of ants appear, only raw power is not much of an effective option where you cant have op powers like summoning sun ...you also need wit and strategies with huge aura ...so the situation is more unstable at this point for one vs one rather than a 2 vs 1 match... probably that could also be a reason behind troupes short appearance and showing only their raw powers mostly... good job togashi !!

or maybe am thinking too much... but just wanted to find out reasons behind troupes short appearance and revealing their power at this specific point of story which was bugging me ...

Shizuku, Shalnark and Feitan didn't win by only using raw power, they were actually analyzing the situation. Shalnark had to resort to raw power due to his mistake of not knowing that that fat bug is a robot. Feitan had to resort to using his Nen because Zazan was physically stronger than him when she transformed into that monster. Bonolenov had to use his sound ability because the ant was way too fast for him. Phinks was the only one using raw power. Remember they are dealing with Ants, who are far superior than human beings with Nen in terms of physical strength.

There really isn't a reason except to showcase some of the members Nen powers. It's great that we can get to see something new and awesome because I am bored of Gon and Killua abilities which is always the same...

My guess is that at least one of the reasons for this little mini-arc is to establish the Phantom Troupes' abilities for an eventual clash with the main four. And, even if that isn't the case, it was still a nice diversion.

I was surprised at Kalluto's attitude considering he grew up in a family of assassin's but...at the same time I understand it. In his family, they help each other when needed to get a job done. For the Troupe, they're the legs of a spider but they all have a shared idea of how they work, and that's not together in a fight unless the fighter allows it.

LMAO at Shalnark & Feitan teasing Phinks. xD [But it's not just like some girl with a crush. Guys can get really spacey about crushes too. /stereotypes]

Does anyone know the orchestra piece in episode 97? I've heard it before and performed it as a field show in high school but can't remember what the song's called. It's a wild west-themed song which makes me suspect it's an American composer. Best example of it would be at 16:30 when he does the Rising Sun move.

Nvm. Figured it out.

I believe it's called Jupiter by Gustav Holst. It also played during episode 96.

I'm sure it's more than fan pandering. You can consider using the Phantom Troupe as a way to gauge the power of the Chimera Ants, while also showing how far the Chimera Ants' presence has spread in the world. There are other things too like showing off many of the Troupe members' abilities (as it might become important in the future).

Now, I am wondering if ever the Phantom Troupe will ever face off the King, will they have a chance??? Hmm..

I feel like a lot of people are thinking too much or complaining too much about this being "off course" from the main story.

As far as the purpose for this part, obviously I'm not Togashi so I don't know why he decided for it to be this way but I have some theories that I feel are pretty easy to understand that people overlook or over analyze.

Firstly, this portion of the story was pretty much used as a means to show us some of the Troupe member's capabilities that we had not yet seen. As others have coined it, fan pandering. Togashi has made the Ryodan present in every arc since their introduction (in the anime so far). I don't see why them getting reintroduced here should be a surprise. Not only do the fans get some closure with the Spiders by getting acquainted with all of their abilities (excluding Nobunaga, who I'm still salty about not seeing his abilities) but we also get a chance to get updated on things such as Kalluto's reasons for joining the Ryodan, Bonolenov's backstory, Meteor City being shown and also Feitan becoming the interim boss.

Secondly, I feel like the people who are complaining about this being "random" and "not central to the main plot" are forgetting what the current situation is. Right now, there are all the different squadron leaders who spread out to create their own kingdoms. These ants aren't just going to go away. It just so happened by chance that Zazan's kingdom was established in Meteor City where the Ryodan not only reside but are also the benefactors to the community much in the same way the Shadow Beasts were to the mafia. So in the context of the story it makes perfect sense to the main plot. Our current situation is that all of the previous squadron leaders have to be defeated in order to get to the big dogs, which are of course the Royal Guard and Meruem.

With this in mind, nothing here is out of place to the main plot. Gon and company are going to be doing the same thing, so nothing was lost by throwing a bone to the Ryodan and letting them showcase their powers.

yah maybe you are right , i was thinking too much , actually i like troupe very much and was hoping if they got involved , they should have more screen time with more impact in the story ...

as fearthebeard85 said it was contextual , the thought also came to me ... but the spreading was so broad that , including only ryodan seemed small and random part in it...although we have been shown ants spreading other continental parts also ... as i said ryodans are big deal ...but Meteor City happened to be in the middle of the mess kind of justifies it ...

thanks for explaining the staffs fear ... understanding this part is important for me...

Great to get to see Shizuku in action, like her laid back and very slightly ditzy persona.

The Queen channeling Zarbon, love it.

Feitan's great, my fav' in the group status enforced and I'm interested in a back story, though this is often the case in these epic shounen's - lots left to the imagination when it comes to very detailed minors. :(
Love the laugh.
+ the sadism.
