Baccano.
I can see it being a Guy Ritchie/Quentin Tarantino style of movie. I always thought Baccano as a combination of Pulp Fiction and Snatch.

Nobody mentioned LOGH? It was essentially a live action, only animated. I think it would work great with live actors.

It already had a stage play so it's doable, but they would need a ridiculous budget to show the actual battles.

Probably slice of life, highschool, psychological anime would be good live action.
Especially Ore Monogatari, Welcome to NHK, The Tatami Galaxy etc

Only Monster has an animation style that doesn't feel like it takes advantage of animation. It just replicates reality.

Everything else I've watched is obviously animated. There are no attempts to replicate reality, to hide the fact it's all drawing. These are stories meant to be told in drawings, not with real people.

Uhm really?

I can't imagine The Tatami Galaxy in live action. It will be a completely different experience, one with a completely different focus in the style, and style is maybe the biggest identifier of the series.

On topic, maybe Monster... or what I've watched of Gangsta., or similar shows. I am not too convinced about Makoto Shinkai in live action form, photorealism as an artistic choice works precisely because it's in the context of animation, so this aspect would be lost in translation. I have considered something like Only yesterday or Grave of the fireflies (there are two live action movies of this after all), but as close to reality as they may be, they still have some sort of stylistic approach that can't be fully replicated in live action form. Similarly to stuff like Usagi Drop, which has a great live action version, but aesthetically speaking, they are quite different...

Monster and LOGH. I think LOGH would be better as a live action show, as actors can truly bring out the charisma and personality of the characters better than the anime could. Monster is fine, but it feels like a live action show already due to its tone and depiction of events.

I guess I'm in the minority of people who think a good live-action adaption of an anime CAN be done. We've just never seen it before because a capable filmmaker has not come along to treat the properties with care. Knowing and respecting the source material is most important with this sort of thing. And Hollywood isn't taking any risks these days, so due to them not knowing how well Japanese culture will translate here in the west they 'Merica that shit up(Dragonball Evolution). I think it could be done well in Japan if somebody gave them a damn Hollywood budget.

Anyway I think this would be flawless: Ghost In The Shell TRILOGY, Directed By James Cameron. BOOM. 10/10.

No, no, don't misinterpret me (if that was somehow directed at me, I dunno). I think there could be great live action versions of any of the shows I watched, except maybe those that are very filled with fantasy stuff that is difficult to translate to live action no matter how good the special effects are, and those that are very stylish with their art and animation (The Tatami Galaxy for instance), but in between there's quite a bunch that wouldn't be difficult to make. My issue here is that they would be to some extent different; I tried to answer taking into account which shows would be less affected by the change. I've seen a live action version of Usagi Drop that worked nearly as greatly as the series, but as said, their aesthetic approach is not even close, and each has their own individual strengths. I interpreted this question as which anime could be adapted to live action without losing any of their key traits, and that was more of a stretch since there's always going to be elements (aesthetically speaking) that are lost in translation or replaced by others.

Oh damn you're right, I thought that was just a rumor. Well, I guess Death Note could translate pretty well but I'm sure a million other people already said that. I still believe a Ghost In The Shell movie directed by James Cameron would be an entirely different film than whatever we end up getting. I want that specifically. Still pumped for the 2017 film though!

Agree with Psycho-Pass. Of course Hollywood should be the one to handle it.

SAO will be bad. How can the live action be good while even the source is bad? ;)

Makoto Shinkai's films replicate real life scenes quite often.

There are some side by side comparisons online.
See here

I can't say it's done well-done. The attention to detail is amazing and some stuff looks more real than reality.

It does make me wonder: Why waste all that talent on just replicating reality? The original photographs are beautiful, too. But I'd rather see artists try to express something in their drawings, rather than just copy reality.

I'm just reading this now, and no I wasn't referring to you. Although I totally agree with what you said, liberties will be taken from every anime that is adapted 100% guaranteed. Unfortunate reality of film-making. I believe Pacific Rim is the best live action anime movie even though its not based on any series. I think the best bet right now is filmmakers taking inspiration and learning from anime while still following their own vision. In this way they won't have to try follow a series beat by beat while still leaving out important aspects, nobody will be happy with this.

Steins;Gate - Their take on time travel is just amazing.

Psycho-Pass - Sci-fi police drama? I'd love to see the dominator in action

Sword Art Online - The first arc would be nice and it could give us a take of what the nerve gear would look and feel like, also in virtual reality

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso - I don't know. It looks better when performed in the anime. Musicians might be all over this. It's a good love story too

And Assassination Classroom gets it's own live action..

I think u have an awesome selection but would like to add a few more

- Akira - this is where i started and its about time they had a live-action
- Another - Pretty good horror movie unlike the lame ones they have these days
- Ghost in the Shell - Major was a real crush for me, wonder who could play that role in live action
- Monster - That would be an artsy movie, also my fav anime
- D-greyman - Some one please complete this !!!

id say something that wouldn't require a ton of CG.. Japanese studios don't got the kind of money that some bigger studios have to make their CG look legit.

So how about Phantom: requiem for the phantom.

You don't need much to make this. Its story can easily be modified to fit 1.5 - 2 hour movie while still keeping close to the source material.
