It's really funny to be part of this "challenge"...!

Non-romantic relationships:
- Kagen no Tsuki
- Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
- Higurashi manga series (if you have a lot of free time)

I'll recommend you some shorter stories I liked, maybe you will be able to pick something:
- Oniisama e... (classic)
- Beast Master (pretty good for a shoujo manga)
- Azumanga Daioh (masterpiece of comedy)
- Full Moon wo Sagashite (good drama + romance)
- Fruits Basket (long, but a must for any shoujo manga lover)

Could I get some recommends? I prefer completed and possibly less than 5 volumes, though the actual length don't matter much. As for genres anything's fine, but I prefer something along the lines of Death Note or Chrno Crusade.

hello hello

Right now , I have 199 (completed) manga entry in my list , and I'm looking for a recommendation , a very good one , that would make a memorable read to celebrate as my 200th completed manga . I'm open to any genre or lenght (maybe not too long though , but if it's really good , why not) , but I'd like a "profiled recommendation" (taking in consideration my favorits and ratings for exemple , maybe) .

Hey ^_^ I am entering the challenge now and am wondering if Trigun Maximum can be considered a manga focusing on non-romantic relationship..what do you think? I watched anime and it had friendship themes..

Maybe I'll do a review of said manga for the occasion , could be interesting and fun exercise .

thank you for the proposition , but actually I tried reading it in the past but it wasn't that much to my taste (seems I completely forgot to add it to my dropped list , but now I don't remember where and when I dropped it ! ha !)

As for your question for Trigun , I haven't readed it so I can't really tell , but if there is some strong friendship them and such , I think it should fit (as for knowing if it's the "focus" , I think it's not easy question , and it's left to people opinion . As far as you genuinly think it fit , I wouldn't see any objection and tsuyokunaru neither , I'm sure)

I wasn't sure what would suit your taste better so I'll just list a few titles:
Seizon -Life-
Pluto
Ningen Shikkaku (Not sure if you'll find this online but it's great)
Kimi no Knife
Fly, Daddy, fly
Scientia
Utsubora

^ thanks a lot , most of what you propose look very interesting to me .
Yes , I've been willing to read Ningen Shikkaku for a long time (because Furuya , and also the anime "Aoi Bungaku") , but couldn't find it so I abandoned with regrets , but it seems I found something this time...If I actually can read it , I'll be sure to make it my 200th read as a priority .

Utsubora look especially interesting to me too...
I might end up reading the majority of your recommendation in the futur , so thanks a lot , that was very helpful .

Thirding Pluto! I think it is Urasawa's best work to date, even though the ending chapter could have used some work. Then again, I feel that way about all of his works I've read thus far.

Don't read Fly, Daddy, Fly just yet. I don't think it is that good of a title to take the 200th manga place. In fact, it was rather dull and uninspired despite the opening chapter leading one to believe that it is going to be a heavy read about revenge.

Well, your taste is rather eclectic, but I'd recommend some tried and tested classics like:

Akira
Battle Angel Alita (very cool; the stencil-like art on some pages reminds me of comics)
Please Save My Earth (it is gripping and complex, but I feel like it could've been better without some aspects and the stupid-arse tower drama near the end that was handled rather poorly)
Kubikiri Asa
Banana Fish (another one that feels like a comic book; the shoujo tag is surprising, but you're sure to get that feeling once you get invested in the story)
Parasyte (you can read my little write-up under the spoiler if you're interested)

Other than these, you may also want to give the following titles a read in the future:

ES - Eternal Sabbath
Japan Tengu Party Illustrated
Nemurubaka
The Legend of Mother Sarah

Pfff, I can't even recognise half of the titles on my list with all of the romanisation going on.

Thanks a lot for your message Yelenicus ! I hope it wasn't too long for you too write , very helpfull .

If so many people say "Pluto" , then it's becoming tempting ^^ . Very interesting , I had this sort of prejudice about Pluto , hearing it was one of his weakest work (I don't even know where or who said me that) , and after 20th century (where I was disapointed with the ending , as you point for all his work yes) , I wasn't willing to read some more of him , but now that time have passed I think it could be a good idea to read it , yes .

I really like "Battle Angel Alita" art style too (I readed some of the sequel first , but realised I was missing some aspect of the story , so I went to read the true beginning , but then I found it too shonen to my taste so I dropped it...and of course I forgot to take note of that cause I'm dumb..haha oh silly me...)

I heard good things about "Banana fish" yes , I'll make it in my plan to read list

for "Parasyte" I'm not sure , well I asked one of my MAL friend who readed it about it , but he say I wouldn't like it that much so I trust him . I'm sure it's a quality manga , but well i'm searching for something that would really please me .

About your other proposition , "Japan Tengu Party Illustrated" seems very interesting to me , and "Nemurubaka" look like a simple and cool read that I'll have pleasure to read .

With all those recommendation people gave me , I have at least the month not to worry about what to read , at least hahaha

thanks a lot everyone , lot's of thing to add to my plan to read .

Reall I think 20th Century Boys were a big let down, unlike Pluto, and I don't think it deserves the amount of praise it usually receives but his worst work is actually Happy! which is just a lame copy of Yawara.

I like Fly, Daddy, Fly because it didn't turn out a story about revenge but yes I agree that it's not good enough to celebrate your 200th title.

Hey guys, I need some recommendations!

Particularly for these challenges:
➤Read a manga that starts with the same first letter as your username

➤Read a manga recommended to you by another Manga Reading Challenge participant

For the second one just tell me any manga you liked, but preferably something shorter, around 5-7 volumes. I'm fine with pretty much any genre. Thanks!

Hey guys, can I ask for manga recommendation?
I'd be pleased if it was something not long (to 30 volumes or to 300 chapters) and not a shounen. And if it's possible, manga which has not a TV adaptation. Thank you :D

All You Need Is Kill (seinen, sci-fi)
Beast Master (shoujo, comedy)
Hideout (horror)
Kagen no Tsuki (shoujo, mystery)
Koukou Debut (shoujo, comedy)
The Flowers Of Evil (manhwa - incest, psychological)

Oh, I'm glad you liked it! Yumeka's works are generally pretty good. Unlike the other titles I mentioned it focused more on the father-daughter relationship and their circumstances instead of comedy, otaku humor or romantic drama so it's probably the safest choice for someone who hasn't read childcare manga before.

I was looking at those post exchanges you had , but didn't felt like I should come in , but now it's different because controversial topic are there to be discussed huhuhu ^^

I looked at your manga list looking for "Usagi Drop" to see if you were talking about the manga or the anime . Seems you saw the Anime and not the manga (like me) , so I just wanted to say that I disagree with what you say ^^

Now , I sure understand why some people would like "My Girl" a lot , and what I'm going to say is my personnal opinion and nothing more , but I was quite disapointed about that manga (I readed it during my first attempt to the challenge)

my big complain is how absolutely unrealistic it felt , and by that I don't mean the situation or scenario , which are good and nicely done , but the way the characters are talking and acting . I could extend it to most shoujo/josei works , I found the way they do their sentence , and what they say , extremly far from what a normal and true conversation is , and it put me off completely .

I readed some of the authors other works , and even if they had those "cheesy shoujo lines" I liked them . The reason why I think it doesn't work in "My Girl" is because the author want us to believe that a young girl (and the young boy too) would talk the way they do in reality , when it is soo far from a children mentality and way of expressing their feelings . Basically , the girl is a puppet carrying the author voice and mentality , trying to act like if she is a children , and it doesn't work .

In the matter , I think "Usagi Drop" do it way better . In both the girls could be view as precocious and very mature for their age , but in "Usagi Drop" you can still think her as a true little girl and it feel realistic , when it doesn't in "My Girl"

Now I don't have anything to complain about the art style though , it was very nice , that's for sure .

Hi! first time posting here so i'm not sure if this is the right place to ask

in the past weeks i've been reading an ongoing mangas like Orange (TAKANO Ichigo), Horimiya, Masamune-kun no revenge and Tetsugaku Letra. Today all of them reached the last update, since i'm new and don't know anything i was wondering when will they get an update? how much time does it needed for a manga to release the new chapter?

because i thought it was once a week like an anime but the last time masamune-kun updated is 10th of July while Tetsugaku is at 18th, Horimiya at 22nd and Orange at 28th.

==============================

and if you don't mind could you recommend me any manga similar to Koe no Katachi? like a boy who hurt a girl in the past but he regrets it and wanted to apologize to her. (i've posted this on the recommendation page and got couple of recommendations but maybe i can get some more here)

thank you very much.

Yeah, I don't read Usagi Drop manga. I know about the dark side so I won't even enter it.

That's fair argument. I know what you mean. The main things that sold me are the story and the message afterall. I'm not a fan of a story without "real" problems. While Usagi Drop gets good interaction between the characters, it doesn't have that thing that make me want to look forward to the next episode, and My Girl has it. Everytime I finished a chapter, I am already looking forward to what's going to happen next. Also, it tries to play with our emotions making it become more memorable, and the ending is well executed.

Plus point from me personally because I can relate with the male lead. I can understand very well his point of view.

The release date for each manga is varying. Some are weekly, biweekly, monthly, or once in a certain period of time. If you're reading through scanlations, it's even more varying. It depends on when the scanlators want to release it. Many are stopped halfway by the scanlators even though the manga is releasing steadily in the magazine. There are many reasons for it, like not enough crews or resources.

I see what you mean , yes . It's just a matter of sensibility and receptivity to certain things I think , we just have different ones .

But then I think you definitly should try the other works of the author , like "Hoshi no koe" or "watashitachi no shiawase na jikan" (They are more on the drama side and romance) . "Bus Hashiru" is good too .

I believe both works have their own charm though they have a very different approach. Usagi Drop, at least the first part, had a much more warm feeling and a makeshift family which is interesting on its own. Though many are bashing it for the later half I think noone can ignore how well written the first part was and all the heart-warming scenes it gave us. My Girl on the other had is a bit more dry, I always thought that Yumeka was the calculative type of mangaka who knows the right patterns to bring out emotions and in one way or another it actually works in her story. The conversations between them, father and daughter, sometimes felt a bit awkward but I thought it was supposed to feel like this. However- at least in my eyes- Koharu looked more as a child who felt obliged to act like an adult instead of a bad written child.

Setting these two titles aside, though I believe 'My Girl' is a nice and safe choice, my personal favourite is Yotsubato. Not only it features a makeshift family but Yotsuba is an adorable ball of cuteness full of curiosity, a bit exaggerated at times, but it's how children are supposed to be anyway and also a great guide of how to be a good parent. However it doesn't have a main plot and it focuses more on comedy so I'm not very confident to suggest it to anyone no matter how much I love it.

@Sooru I believe acting like an adult is one thing and talking like an adult is another. Acting like adult is not difficult. She just needed to understand others' feeling and acted so that she wouldn't be a bother to them. On the other hand, talking like an adult required knowledge, experiece, and wisdom, which of course none of the kids should have had yet so it's just impossible for them. That also bothered me a bit, but the interesting story covered it for me.

Talking about nothing's happening in my previous post, the exact same problem is currently happening right now with Yokohama Kaidaishi Kikou. I have read 5 volumes but are currently struggling to finish the sixth. Will it ever make me sit at the edge of my seat or stay like it is for the rest of the series? Considering I still got +100 chapters to read, I might drop if it stays like this.

As expected. Too bad. Don't get me wrong though. I don't really dislike it, It's just that 14 volumes for a slice of life is overkill for me. I think I should just read it slowly in between other series when I feel like it. Focusing solely on it made me bored instead. Now I feel like I must salute those who finished the whole Doraemon.

thanks but how can i complete the series now ? and why they did't complete translating a famous work like this although it's already done from nearly 5 years

I know that feel bro. My Area no Kishi has been dwelling in my on-hold for almost a year.

What's the best manga you guys read in this challenge?

Mine would be Slam Dunk, closely followed by Ashita no Joe. About Slam Dunk, I always thought people said Slam Dunk is better than Kuroko because of nostalgia factor, but how wrong I was. Slam Dunk is miles better.

I've yet to read some that really caught my eyes: Tokyo Ghoul (so far so good), Monster, Full Metal Panic!, Hikaru no Go, and Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan.

I was traveling and then I got sick so I took a bit to come back, but now I'll start updating the lists again. Sorry for the wait!

@FlameWingman21
I think my favorite so far has been Terra e... I had been meaning to read it for a long time and I loved the 2007 anime so I was pleasantly surprised when I found out it was a bit different because it felt fresh. Though I haven't finished Nodame Cantabile it has been a really entertaining and great read because I can breeze through chapters and not get bored and the art is wonderful.

I'd love to know what you think of Hikaru no Go as it is one of my favorite manga ever. I read Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan and I enjoyed parts of it, though I have a bit of a controversial opinion, maybe? I've never really discussed it with other people so I'm not sure if my opinion is controversial or not, but considering how popular it seems to be, I might be in the minority.

In the challenge that I finished two really stand out.

Bambino! - This was a quick read I think I read all 15 volumes in a night or two. It was a really fun story of a guy trying to become a chef. I like a lot of cooking challenge shows so this fits right in there with it.

A Cruel God Reigns - From Moto Hagio, I love her work and I have been meaning to read this one for a while. It is a tough read because it deals (fairly realistically for a manga) sexual abuse. It can be a little lurid but it is one of the best psychological dramas I've read.
