I find it sad Tsubaki doesn't matter after staying by him all this time. Also, how does Emi know what kind of vision Arima had while playing?

Man Kousei's in love. That was quite the performance. Yeah three styles in a single song lol.
Now where will it go from here?

Oh forgot to intepret one part: the mother's smile. I think that represents her love for Kousei even though the performance was completely off score. In a way, I believe his mother forgave Kousei for those final words and is also in a way asking for forgiveness for how she treated Kousei. Of course before she died. Obviously, if she did not love Kousei she would not have been hurt by his words after Kousei's performance before her death. She'd probably get angy if she did not take that to heart.

Reading the manga was enough to move me (while I was playing the piano pieces in the background).. But damn, this anime takes it up to another level. Those internal dialogues, those chilling sound effects. I can't wait for the later episodes. It's gonna be soo good. Especially with all the upcoming drama.

This anime is bloody amazing.

I guess Kousei confirmed loves Kaori? I can't help but feel bad for Tsubaki I mean she was the original supporter of Kousei and now she's been replaced :(

I still love both girls non the less but I guess I'll always be biased towards the childhood friend.

I still like this anime a lot, but I really think there was a lot of unnecessary repetition and overall redundancy in these past 3 episodes. They could have told the same story in just 2 episodes. I hope the pacing gets back to what it was before...

Oh wow, man, I don't know.

Honestly, I loved the first part of this episode, with Arima having a hard time and finally give up, I found it very powerful. I thought it could end here about this competition.
But then, all these cheesy lines, wtf, it was the first time I found this show disappointing, and the first time I didn't like something about Shigatsu.
I mean, all the "I... I'm going to play for you", omg, please.
And to make matters even worse, they add these typical shounen lines like : "Three times... He transformed" ; "Is it really Arima ?!", "His Chopin... Sasuga ! My kokoro goes doki doki and stuff".

I understand how it can be considered as 'awesome' and 'romantic' for a lot of people though, even if the fact is I personally found it quite embarassing.
I was still watching it though, because it was oddly impressive. "It must be the production quality + Chopin", I thought.
However, at the end of the performance, when Arima stood up, walked and greeted the audience, I admit it, I shed a tear now, that's really embarassing.
Perhaps, it was kind of beautiful actually ?
Like the audience says : "What was that ? Was it good ? Or was it bad ?"
To be truth... I. Don't. Fucking. Know.
Even if, objectively speaking, I still find the second part a bit over the top, I think the whole atmosphere moved me, both the simplicity and the sincerity of this episode deeply touched me. And a part of myself probably loved the cheesy lines too. So yeah...
To be honest, I still don't know if this episode was that good yet, but I think I'll rewatch it a second time, just to be sure even if I guess I enjoyed it after all.

I have no idea if I have shit tastes or something, but in its own way, this episode convinced me that Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso is the show I love the most this season (with Parasyte), even more than Shingeki no Bahamut, Shirobako or Fate/stay night. Not because of such reasons like "so deep" or "very clever plot", but because, even if I know some people here find this show pretentious, I have to admit I don't feel that way at all when I'm watching it. This is quite the contrary : from all the shows I'm watching this season, for me, Shigatsu is the most appealing, delightful and genuine.
I enjoy it because it gives me a lot of good vibes, and this is what I value the most about anime or any other medium. It's as simple as that.

P.S : Woooaaah, who is the lady who appeared at the end (the one who's calling Arima "Mr Mediocre") !? I strongly hope she'll become the piano teacher of Arima soon, because I just adore this kind of tropes actually ! :3

This entire episode had me up in goosbumps, so damn beautiful.

And even though that scene at the end with his mother having a genuinely happy smile was supposed to be sweet, I still kinda got the heebie jeebies. It'll be a while before his mom stops giving me the creeps :/

Ahhhh...feel so sorry for Tsubaki for having to watch Kousei fall in love with Kaori :( After that performance, everyone and their dog knows Kousei is head over heels for Kaori.
The impending dorama will be painful to watch.

Too damn beautiful.I feel so bad for Tsubaki tho ;_;; she needs more love - and when Arima was saying ''Only you matter' i couldn't stop thinking about how sad would Tsubaki be if she heard it.
Anyways, this is aots for me without much of competition.People say that this show is being overdramatic, but i think it's because of it's overdramaticness and awkward moments with embarassing lines i love this show so much.It just adds this weird charm to it.Anyways, one of best episodes yet, if not best.

Holy frickkkkk. I love how they put imagery with music. This is the first time I'm watching something (related to music) with so much effort into the animation and art. I really liked the shots of Arima playing with the sunflowers and cherry blossoms around him. Thanks, A-1.

I also really like the theatrical dialogue. Having Arima realize and find his resolve for playing was great. I'm glad he finally got resolution and moved forward from his trauma (or at least a step)

hey who was that girl at the end?? I feel so bad for Tsubaki and Emi cuz they're loosing to Kaori... So at the end of Arima's performance, when his mom smiled, what was that about? Like she's clearly one of his inner voices (at least, I think she represents his guilt and regret), but I sort of feel like Arima didn't really smile after his performance till his mom did. Does that mean he's still at least sort of performing to please her? Also, dang Takeshi was upset. I wonder how he's going to deal...

So true.
This anime is just so beautiful, eye-candy each week.
I know some people would argue it can be a double-edged sword because it's like liking a show only for its graphics, but I can't help it, its beautifulness add a lot to the immersion. And technically, it's not just about graphics, as you said, it's especially the animation, art and all the visual imagery which are outstanding.

Yeah, I agree in a way, and it's an important step for Kousei indeed.
Nevertheless, I admit I'd be a bit disappointed if his only resolution for playing is his love for Kaori...
However, I'm well aware of Kousei's situation though, he's still 14 and in love, so this is understandable to some extent.

Even if it really looks absurd, to play again a piece during a competition, it is somewhat his own way to say "the party is ruined and nothing left to lose, lets just do this and yeah". I think its kind of cool to admit your own situation and accept your feelings... I wish I could see optimistic and autistic players like him at least once doing this kind of mess up, wouldn't you agree it would be a weird social experience?
There is another thing that we could notice but the characters inside couldnt: Kousei's human metronome doesn't really happen because he memorizes the tempo and the score, it is because he learn the music. Once he stops hearing himself, he loses his tempo. It wouldn't be a problem since he "memorized" the whole deal, right? (just like Beethoven could compose because he supposedly could remember the note's sound through the frequence each time he hit a note in the piano) But then he gets nervous because he can't hear it and loses his own confidence. Concluding, in the end everybody (including Arima) was wrong about Kousei's motionless-human-metronome piano style.

-Skyleo- said:

I actually had a laugh with those dialogues. You know, I think they wanted to find excuses to justify Kousei's sloppy play. That "three times transformation" gave me this vibe.
PS: those flashbacks mention Kousei's oening number (variations on twinkle twinkle...) but he doesn't even get to perform it, baka A-1

If we think about what happened and the idea behind it, I think it was quite beautiful, but the whole presentation was really ugly and a mess. We can only say its good pretty etc because we know what Kousei had in mind, right?
I think the production really hit the mark in the middle section of the Étude. That sunflower scenery and the rest was really fitting, but out of place if we compare the first part and the last (but yeah, we know Arima was in his own world). I think the string arrangement was quite garish, even if it fit the mood, nobody needed that.

I think its more than justifiable. Kaori opened a new door in his life and gave a new reason to play the piano. At least for a good while, I think we'll see Kousei's efforts directed towards her, just like we do when inspired (not necessarily by loved ones)

LOL! they added strings to chopin. that caught me off guard. it wasn't as bad as the terrible winter wind remix. but they're like repeating the B section of the etude too many times, I guess it was hard to make an impact the final time huh. Still can't decide if the "added orchestral feel" worked for the situation or not, but at least it wasn't bad. But we all know there's someone in the music department who is itching to add his or her own flavour to these classical masterpieces! grrr.

but anyway was a good episode as usual. but for some reason this performance struck me more in the manga.

The part where Arima was deciding whether to stop. the playing sounds like some guy whose been practicing for 6 hours straight and about to lose will and fall asleep at the piano.

Pretty good episode. As expected, it was kind of a so-so performance. I'm glad Kousei found the will to keep going in Kaori, though i think ''you're the only one that matters'' was a bit too excessive, did he forget he's got two best friends he's known all his life?

Since even Watari was listening like he was being hypnotized, the second part must have been good. I've gotta say, it's kinda cheap but funny how they added violins to Kousei's performance to make it more epic. That mom better stay the hell out of his mind now.

Wow, that first half was really painful to watch. The melody going slower and slower, it was like he was in a long agony... And those freaking muffled notes give me chills. It's really creepy how such a beautiful instrument can do such a horrible sound.

But I'm glad he stayed on the bench and go on with his performance. It was more fluid melodious. It felt like he was playing everything in staccato at the beginning.

It was cute when he started to see Kaori when he was playing. But that was a bit mean to say that he was playing for one person when you got your bro watching you, your cute osananajimi, you two rivals that have haunted for years because of you...

I'm gonna repeat myself, but what keeps that anime from being a real masterpiece in my opinion is his overly dramatic sequences. I thought we were done with the mom, they have been pretty much in deep about that last week (and it was getting a bit annoying too), but they came back with that this episode too, a lot of time. The facts that the characters always seem to have sudden illuminations also annoys me a bit. I'm okay with unrealistic stuff or inner monologues, but when it happen every five minutes...

I'm not a big fan of this show (I've read the translated chapters of the manga too) but this episode was really hard for Arima.
He couldn't handle it and just stopped. His trauma really is something harsh.
If you watch it from the perspective of the audience, he managed to recover himself and do a good play.
But inside he was trying to overcome his trauma, using Kaori as an excuse to overcome it. I don't like the fact he chose Kaori for this, I don't like her character, but he made that decision since he loves her. I don't think he's done with it but he made a step in the right direction.

I agree, I've been iffy about this so ever since I think episode 3 or so, but what I really like is the way they were able to portray Kousei's suffering of his trauma. The audience can really feel his agony and how it feels to be unable to hear the notes as he struggles to continue playing. But yeah, what I personally don't care much for is his love for Kaori, or Kaori's character so far. Anyways, despite not liking Kousei using Kaori for overcoming his trauma (or as a step towards overcoming his trauma), I'm just glad that he is able to start moving forward. I watched through this episode pretty much straight-faced and then once Kousei looked up and "saw" his mother who then slowly smiled, tears just came out. I doubt his mother would've smiled at such a performance, but since this whole time he's been hallucinating his mother, this means that he really has begun to move forward; it's all in his head, but his "mother" has finally "smiled" at him. Such an emotional ending to the episode.

Great episode. I was wondering when Kousei would finally get past his troubles regarding his mother but he finally broke free! He really did feel like 3 different pianists, and left everyone astonished by the end. I'm glad he's proud of himself, even if is going to be disqualified. I wonder who that lady is at the end? Seems like a whole lot of people in the audience who understood the feelings he poured into his play, there's no way Kaori didn't get them too. It's not like this is news, but damn, he is madly in love with her lol.
