If Sousuke tells Rin, then Rin will pull him out of the relay.

And also, Sousuke has already been scouted and he has already accepted an offer. If they find out that Sousuke is hurt, then they might even pull away their offer. Remember, the reason why Sousuke transfered to his hometown in the middle of his senior year was because he had already accepted a scouts offer.

I'd love to see him swim in the relay but he seems in a lot of pain and it would most likely hurt the team and himself even more if he were to swim. It seems highly unlikely that Sousuke's scouts would terminate his contract for a minor niggling injury and also take into consideration hes having a break year and not really going hard out.

I guess it would depend on what the doctor told him and whether he chooses to listen to that advice. I just hope it wont cause an even more serious injury or prevent his team going to the finals.

Sousukes a tough dude though. I think he will prevail it. If not, prepare for some drama between him and Rin afterwards.

Best episode so far, IMO. Haru actually didn't do well for once, when it really mattered. Kinda stupid, though, to not even think about the future and just want to swim with your friends forever. I mean, come on, be a little realistic. Love how Rin is so worried about him, too.

That was quite possibly he best episode of the series, let alone this season. Damn. THAT'S how you do drama right. I felt like I was suffocating.

Poor Haruka so much pressure coming from his own circle and beyond with the scouts
He just wants to be free and swim like that
It was quite an amazing way to stand in the middle of the qualifying race

Sousuke's injured shoulder isn't going to win the medley relay

This episode hurt.

I got chills and really wanted to cry when Haru was swimming and the water started grabbing at him. I guess it was just because, throughout both seasons, the water was what truly made Haru happy, what made him feel free. Seeing it hurt him just made me uneasy.

I wish that he would just talk to someone about it. Makoto knew that something was wrong, but Haru still wouldn't talk.

Same with Sousuke. That injury doesn't look good at all, and by swimming, he's putting himself at serious risk. He seems to be doing it for Rin, but it's not going to end well if he keeps up like that.

This episode was really dark. The dream was totally unlike Free!, which made it even more eerie. Hopefully things start turning around next week.

Ugh, that dream, with all the pressure Haru's now getting I can understand those feelings. I never liked doing things in front of people anyway. And then things just kept on pushing and ahh, I hardly know who I should feel the most sympathy for.

I wouldn't say that Haru isn't being realistic. He's only a teenager after all and a lot of people in real life have moments where we wonder about our futures and what we want to do with our lives. This episode is reflecting exactly that, a teenager hitting a crossroad. Haru and Rin have different reasons for swimming and for Haru he's more hesitant with his choice at the moment because he's confused and frustrated with all the pressure.

what.

and i'm glad that i'm not the only one who was getting major evangelion vibes. ha ha i couldn't get that out of my mind as i was watching the scene. but really. what's happening. what are you doing haru? why are you screwing yourself over for the future because you not only want to only swim free, you also only want to swim free. i don't know. stopping mid-race like that was all kinds of unexpected and while it was an interesting spin on the anime's part, i really can't understand why haru would do that.

hopefully we get some more insight as to why he's making all these choices and ideally we'll see some sort of resolution where he'll accept an offer and do something meaningful for his lifeee. ugh.

also glad nitori made the relay, though i guess it was pretty much a given. and sousukeee.

The moment Haru started to speak out his mind and vent out his frustrations (to Rin, as it seems) I literally started to feel a deep sense of relief myself...it was just painful seeing how Haru was containing all that frustations to himself I was afraid they were gonna crush him the longer they manifested...

That is one good step ahead, Haru, don't keep it inside.

I was awfully pissed and frustrated in this episode. Haru has all that great talent just gone to waste. He now looks like he's a half-hearted swimmer. I know Haruka's a teenager - can't handle pressure properly yet, living only in the present and all that, wanting to only swim with his friends. If that's the case, he might as well not sign-up or participate in the individual freestyle tournament. If Haru was smart/wise, even though he is unsure of what he wants to do in the future, he could've pleased the scouts, choose a college that was offered, then think of what he wants along the way as he's in college. At least he could've had a fallback. That was a wasted opportunity and blessing! I'm with Rin on this one! If only Haru would've opened up to his friends before the match... maybe, JUST MAYBE, the outcome would've been better.

Momotarou is the cutest thing ever.

I feel bad for Haruka, the pressure must be painful.
I am a little frustrated he doesn't think about his future, though, and would probably act as Rin did only out of kindness and concern for his friend. It'd upset me a little if my friend had no direction to go towards.

Awwww, Nitori's time is way better now T.T

I wish Haruka would be more enthusiastic about those people scouting him...

Now that's one awesome hotel to be staying in.

So Sousuke's shoulder still hasn't healed eh.

LOL, I think Haruka's letting the pressure get to him.

Dat nightmare damn...

Poor Makoto lost but Rin made it to the finals in style.

Damn, he water is attacking Haruka?

LOL, Haruka snapped and probably spoke with more passion and way more than he did in the all of the previous episodes put together XD.

so glad for Nitori, seeing the fruit of his hard work =)

love Momotarou passion for Gou xDD as how I love the two Mikoshiba brothers relationship, want to see more xDD

Haru for wanting to eat mackerel all the time is a real dolphin!!

it was an awkward moment having Nanase and Sousuke at the same elevator x3 and now Haru know that Sousuke shoulder haven't healed yet.

I really want to know what Makoto was about to say to Rin in the room! just when Nagisa will stop being clockblock >< (he deserved that forehead hit by Rin :p)

it was beautiful seeing again and again how Makoto is the only person who’s feeling and understanding Haru <3

I felt so sad for Rin he was caring about Haru and wanting him thus he felt frustrating when he felt that Haru doesn't caring at all about being scouting, I felt like Rin wanted to say again "swim for me!"
Rin was able to convince Haru to swim in relay years ago, but seems he won't be able to convince him to swim with him to the world level this time.

a heavy weight on Haru's shoulder
life isn't that easy
Haru wants to keep swimming freely with his friends but society is attacking his wish 'cause of his talent
Makoto wants to keep swimming with Haru but he doesn't have that talent
Sousuke want to keep swimming with Rin but he has his shoulder's problem
Rin wants to keep swimming with Haru but Haru doesn't care about that world level

A tinge-bit overdramatic for my personal taste, but this was the best episode out ot Free! for me so far.

I'm very happy about Nitori's massive improvement in breaststroking, thanks to his determination and Sousuke's coaching. He improved a little too quick, but he has the greatest passion to participate in the Samezuka relay team, so that's excused.

Sousuke's really out of luck with that shoulder injury of his. He's definitely going to hinder the performance of the relay team. He needs to be more open and not take everything in so deeply.

I can say the same thing about Haru, especially after seeing his breakdown. It's great to see that he cares about himself and his friends more than swimming competitively, but he still needs to be more open.

This episode really got me excited. The next one is probably going to be as good as this one, if not better.

Cool, Nitori's part of the relay team now.

Haru just broke down in the end.
He has so many scouts, he became pressured and tried running away.
He's not free anymore. But he wants to be.

As for Sousuke, him not telling Rin about his injury will definitely affect the relay.
As of now, I'm not sure who would win the relay.
I just hope everything ends well.

If they'll mess up the exchange - like in the practice - because of his injury, the team will not only lose, but be disqualified. For Rin that'd be the second time in a row, but more importantly with HIS team, the team he built and in his last year of high school.
I don't dislike Sousuke that much, but that would be hard to forgive.

I didn't think Haru stopping to swim was that bad. (At least they'll always remember him now - first he swims in a team with someone from another team, then he stops dead in the midlde of a race). Except I think it might have irritated and influenced the performance of the other swimmers in a bad way.
I don't think he has to become a pro if he doesn't want to. That's fine. Though Rin will have to live with not going to the same university with Haru and swimming together.
I really doubt anyone but Rin will go pro. It's sad, but after school friends get seperated (at least school/career-wise) - that's life.

Wow, that was suffering to watch, as expected. I can't say I'm a big fan of the "I swim only free" plotline because I feel like Haru's such a waste of his talent. Now, the results of the next few episodes are pretty obvious. He lost the freestyle race so now they'll have a big comeback with the relay most likely.

Thank god for Momotarou for making episodes still happy.

The Mikoshiba's are comedy gold, their relationship is adorable.

Haru...I knew he was going to do that. All I kept thinking was "he is definitely going to throw the race". Glad it was just his heat and not the relay though.

Seriously though speak up. No one knows what you are thinking. All Haru had to say was "I don't want a future in professional swimming b/c it's restrictive...I can't be free" ta-da! Then maybe your friends at least would stop bugging you about you but nooo, you hold it all in and go nuclear on your boy. Of course if you are brilliant at something, people assume that's what you are going to do with your life, shut that down quick and no worries.

It was definitely a dick move but I understand what it feel like to think self sabotage is the only option. But in this situation, with people cheering for/depending on him and all, he just lost the respect of his school, principal, swimfans, and other schools (he obviously doesn't care but daaaag)

Well, this is my guess: Haru likes to swim. It's fun. Especially together with his friends. He doesn't want to pursue a professional career in it though, he has no ambition to do so. But because he is so good at swimming, everyone keeps just expecting him to. I mean, if you like doing something and you're really, really good at it - why not make it your career. Everyone would assume you'd be happy to be able to. And because, idk, he wants to make them happy or he doesn't know better or doesn't want to face opposition, he goes along with them at first. But then swimming is no fun anymore. So he stops.

Actually, I think it's rather common for people to just go along with what others tell you, especially when you're still young. It's not that easy, to face them and say no.
Especially if it's about your future and your career and you actually don't yet know any better alternative. After school so many people studied certain things because "my friend does it, too", "the university is close to home and I don't have to move" and such things.

I think it's funny how most of the people just only see things from Rin's perspective and not from Haru's. Having the talent to be a pro doesn't mean you have to be one. It's okay if he just swims because it's fun, i believe that if you work on something you like then the job will be enjoyable but i also think that, to some people, it can also make the thing stressful and not enjoyable anymore. I don't know if Haru will end up being a pro but i sure as hell know that it isn't his dream, that's Rin's. And because it's his dream he's being working his ass off to achieve it, cause he's very hardworking but then you have Haru and he doesn't have to do big efforts, he's naturally gifted, everyone know's that, and because he is everybody just assumed he had to become a pro, because that's what gifted people should do. But by thinking such things they have put a huge amount of pressure on his shoulders, a pressure he didn't even want in the beginning cause he's just being swimming cause his friends asked him to, and now it has become difficult for him to swim, and that's sad.

About Rin, i just think he's a very selfish and oblivious person. I'm not trying to put him in a bad light, it's just how i perceive him. I also don't think he's a bad person, but some of the things he does, mostly those concerning Haru and Sousuke (oh Sousuke!), hurt others, but he just can't see it cause he's so dense it's frustrating. It's sad that Haru had to yell at him for him to stop bothering him, but also i think that's the only way people like Rin understands.

I hurt for Sousuke's character. It's just my opinion but i think that Rin and Haru are examples of normal and minimum effort to achieve something, and then Sousuke would be the excess, to put it some way. He's overworked himself so much that he got hurt, badly, and this makes me really unhappy cause he's probably very close to lose his scholarship, if that hasn't happened already. I just want somebody to help that miserable boy.

I'm just devastated.
The whole episode was really emotional. But what hit me the most was the last scene.
Sousuke, Sousuke, ah baby...Actually he's one of the strongest characters I've seen in anime lately. But I truly think it's a bad thing that he's trying to take everything on his own shoulders (oh, the irony...). But at the sime time I can't blame him, because we all know-if Rin knows that Sousuke is injured, he won't let him swim in the relay. This way Sousuke can't make his dream come true. But right now he probably won't make his dream come true either. WHY. WHY LIFE,why does this happen.
Plus. The whole episode I was like 'Makoto, Makoto, RUN after Haru!'. I truly believe that Mako is the only one that saw that Haru was having hard time. I know that there actually is nothing he could do in the practice but still I felt like something in their interaction in this episode was lacking ;w;
And the conversation between Rin and Mako would be pretty nice if it weren't interrupted. Eh.

But still. Sousuke, Sousuke, my dear baby Sousuke. Just let him make his dream come true please. Please.

It's really dangerous that Sousuke hasn't told Rin that he's injured, at this rate he's just going to make his injury worse (which is possibly how he got injured in the first place...)
So, if he's been scouted because he's such a good swimmer, but then can't swim anymore because of an injury... What happens then?

I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out he lied about being scouted in the first place, and the real reason he came back was because of the injury.

I came back for the second season cause I just loved the drama in the first one and finally, here it is!

I don't know if it's just me but I thought the development was a bit slow until episode 8.
I mean, I thought the whole show was going to explode when Sousuke strut his stuff on Haru a couple of episodes back but yeah...

But I'm not complaining now. This episode is the reason why I love this series.
And I just love that fiery Haru. That scene was perfect, especially his expression, tone and that aggressiveness was definitely needed.
Wow, I mean, I wonder what Rin's thinking after he said all that.

And damn, Sousuke needs help! What's gonna happen with the relay?! Will Rin be fuming?!!

I can't wait for next week. All this tension - I love it!!

I completely agree with you. I wouldn't be watching Free if it weren't for episodes like these that really show the intensity and emotion behind every swimmer !

& i also wondered what was left on Rins mind when Haru finally went off on him! It's not like Haru to be yelling and such, i took him to be the quiet type. But while Rin was yelling at Haru i was mentally wanting Haru to go off and yell back at Rin! I think it was a good thing that Haru did yell back, it helped him clear off some problems he had carrying behind his back.

& you are right i was hoping that the anime would explode when Souske pushed Haru agaisnt the vending machine and told him not to mess with Rin, so i was a little disappointed when Haru & Souske finally met up again in the elevator and did not exchange a serious argument, i was secretly wanting Haru to tell him off from last time, but i was still content with how it ended.

Either way now i cant WAIT for the next episode of Free! LONG LIVE FREE!!!
