I'd beg to differ. Ranma and other series like Golden Boy had way more charm behind it then this. As for the ecchi..Daimidaler did it better this season.

Well, that's your opinion, and kinda contradicts what you just said about Enjoyment =/= Quality. That doesn't apply for ecchi, comedies, etc... at all.
Charm is having entertainment too, so, this is just favoritism (on both sides).

The characters in NGNL are cardboard cutouts, the characters in Ranma are more developed (ok, that had way more time to do that). The animation also doesn't strike me as outstanding here and the colors are certainly different, but art direction is once again mediocre. From a technical standpoint NGNL is an average product, I wouldn't say the same about Ranma which - at least as far as I recall it - had fitting production values and looked quite well for a long runner.
A lot of NGNL feels like a very cheap promotion for the LN to me as well.

It's otaku pandering to the max with depraved ecchi comedy and wish fulfillment empowering games. The explanations are exposition dumps, that doesn't make a for a thrilling game, and they're just excuses for the protagonists to seem like the OP NEET/hikikomori "badasses" that they are. These "tactics" just seem smart when they are just explained away contrivances from the author, smart presentation, but that doesn't make the execution any better. And with that all character and personality Sora and Shiro have just falls apart, making them just stand ins for the viewer, the perfect bland self-insert wish fulfillment for any gamer/otaku, both female and male. Because fuck reality right? Being irresponsible and treating everything like a game trivializing any consequences of your actions is obviously how one should go about life, right NGNL? That's the point you tried to deliver now.

And then we have the unexplored world, an entire fucking world. Normal reasonable people will stop treating games as something "just for fun" when they are the only way to resolve any kind of conflict. Most would avoid conflict at all costs and not challenge anyone and no one will accept any games or bargains, the status quo is the most comfortable situation one can ask for. No, let's go right on with conquering the world and add girls to our harem, because we are hikikomoris who have played every game and have genius intellect.

Yeah, I can see where the snobs are coming from. But I'm still an immature teen that is easily satisfied. I'm neutral towards this show, but my god is it hyped as hell. 5/10- just solid pop corn entertainment by otakus for otakus.

True, but here it is extremely noticable. The ending and a lot of the direction make me feel like I needed to read the LN to be able to fully immerse myself. As a standalone product this is not good at all.

Why not, it's anime lol. Of course fuck reality. It's about a pair of badass OP NEETs who want to take over of the world. There doesn't have to be self fulfillment for any gamer or otaku to feel better about themselves. Maybe some do, maybe some don't. It's an anime, there doesn't have to be a point why an anime is made.

I see your point, and respect your opinion. But still, this anime delivered everything that was proposed to in 12 episodes. Anime/Manga/Novel market is a gamble, they never know if something will do the trick and become a Hit.
This is the very best ecchi commedy in a long time, and it is pretty solid with its themes. Is not a masterpiece, but for the genre, is just great.
You can't compare Mushishi, Ping Pong, HxH and NogeNora in the same categories, man. They are completely different.

Best fucking anime of the season. Anyone who says it's overrated can jump up my butt.

Second season needs to start production yesterday. It'll take a lot more than just another season or two to see the storyline to its end, though ... they've only gotten two races on their side and there's 16 they have to assemble. Even at 3 races a season that's 5 more seasons ... if they stick to two and then a season to take down the God of Games, we're looking at 9 seasons in total (counting this one). Of course, the Light Novels probably haven't gotten that far either.

It's too bad, I liked this series a lot. It sure has done its job promoting the LNs, but it's a goddamn shame they only decided to make 12 episodes. It's been a while since an anime left me really wanting more at the end of each episode.

Good "final" episode!

I have to say, the fact that Blank always wins makes it somehow predictable. Of course, in every show the heroes have their plot armour, but here they remind you of it everytime they say their catchphrase. But still, I enjoyed it a lot, also the humor was fine and the fanservice too. The colours made it seem a bit like watching on LSD, but I guess it's just the artistic style of this show.
It's not perfect and a bit overhyped, although not much, but it's still a good watch! :)

I sure hope there will be a second season. I'd say it seems popular enough, although a bit polarizing. But popularity doesn't guarantee anything :(

What's wrong is that he needs to have a real big fucking ego to fav his own characters (siblings by the way) doing each other on his public art account. Also bookmarking loli hentai is pretty much the drawn equivalent to child porn. Which is sickening.

To be blunt. A lot of animes aren't to be standalone products. I'm in the industry and hyping up manga and novels is what anime is almost made to be. Mostly cause it's too expensive to create a long series anime (unless licensed by America or somewhere to be able to make money from it), which is one of the reasons why Bleach ended and not Naruto. Americas bought onto Naruto and not Bleach. And America also recently bought back onto One Piece.

Some anime does it's justice in a standalone, but the majority is a big marketing hype for the manga and lightnovels and games lol. If you're trying to find good standalone products, stay away from adapted-series.

Well, I'm sorry m8, but yes, you are probably a immature teen....

This show is a work of fantasy, is meant for you to sit and relax nothing more than that. If I want to think about what a "true" person would do in this situation, then I would probably look for a anime with the following tags: "slice of life"+"drama"+"Psychological".

Since you picked up a anime that said from the beginning that was a comedy, you can never in any situation expect normal procedures from the Main Characters... So long story short, yap, you still need to learn a little, at least until you are able to differentiate the tags regarding the anime story...

After you learn to differentiate tags, then learn to rank the anime for these same tags, like a Ecchi must be ecchi, a comedy must be comic, a drama must make you feel and so on...

So back to the point, you are still immature and definitely need to learn how to make your reviews for each genre.... or another solution would be to just pick the animes with the genres you like!!!

Personal tastes are like peoples behinds, each one has its own,
and only those who wants to find [...] will smell one another.

I think 9 seasons is too much but I agree with you that there is A LOT of material for more than just 24 episodes (if we get two seasons of 12 eps). If they leave it like this, it'll be a waste of such a good show. But I'm not worried because I'm pretty sure there will be at least one more.

And I also agree that this is the best fucking anime of the season lol.

Being in the industry, unless the sales sky rocket and/or gets licensed by another company, it won't see another season. If it sees another season, I highly doubt it'll get more than 3 tops. There will be just too much to fit for a budget anime. It's more for promotional hype for the LN and manga.

Yet most good manga and anime adaptions still manage to stand on their own feet! Take Jinrui for example. The LN is unfinished, but it changed the chronoligcal order, switched around a few things and managed to create a very self-contained effect.

Iirc the last scene of this episode was supposed to be in the last volume, which makes the intention of those who adapted it clear: Teasing the LN. We could very well just have another kind of open ending that still leaves room for a second season without this change, for example. The coin toss was a good opportunity for it.

It's not about just liking it, I DID like it. I'm admittedly not well versed in genres at all(not even battle shounen and I like my action). So I haven't gone to the level where I have comparison for every genre and basic premise.

But when looking at it from a much more grounded analytical stance and what it contributes to the world, this is schlock. Does it do what it sets out to do and be: yes!
Is just that enough to rate it among stuff with actual substance and meaning? Nope.

I was actually waiting for a comment like this for years (yes, years, long before this anime even aired) to put this opinion out.
Most stories, that involve intrigue, or strategies are ultimately the author pissing in your ear, claiming it's raining. And all it depends on, is if you buy it. If you do, you've got yourself a potentially fun ride, if you don't, you'll have a jarring experience.

Now back to most of your comment...
When you have the weakness of your opponent in your hand, and have them dancing in your palm, what most, if not all sensible people do, is exploit it, when they feel like they need to/stand at benifit for doing it. (Yes, I do follow the sentiment, that most people are inherently evil [a lighter version of it, at least])

And the word you're looking for is not "hyped", but overrated, which I would argue, but ultimately, both sides would boil down to subjective opinion, which gets nothing nowhere. But seriously, the term "hype" is something, you use, when something gets popularity before it is even available. You talk about overhype, when it doesn't live up to the initial hype around it. However NGNL didn't get any notable hype behind it, and only after the first episode did I notice it being visible on the radar for most people. Which of course later on grew to a giant mass of fans, and while I agree with most of them, that the anime is awesome, my own opinion is heavily biased, because I love the novels, and have certain parts of the story, and background building, that was missed out of the anime.

That just takes directing talent. I loved the light novel of Jinrui, while the anime threw me off a bit at first, it did it's own justice.

Not sure how many novels ngnl is going to have, but Volume 6 isn't the last novel. They introduced the old deus in 6. To be honest, they have quite a ways to go having not capture all the pieces yet either. But if there's another season, it'll just be to hype the ln and manga more lol.

So, we agree that the direction of NGNL is not the best then?
It's not like they could have just asked the author or so.. many authors do that in order to make sure the adaptions are successful.

I would love to see a recent LN adaption without some form of incest for once. Fake or not. I do not trust LN authors to handle this theme because they always screwed up in the past.

I don't think blood relations has anything to do with bad writing. Non-blood relation siblings is just more of stereotype of how many times Japanese divorce and remarry. Although their marriage rates are still super low and divorce rates are super high lol.

There are just different styles of writing having read thousands of novels over the years.

Ah thank you for that, I see what you mean. Will keep those concepts in mind for the future.

Also do you feel like they rushed things too much in the adaptation. I got the last part about the ending, jumping to such a huge cliffhanger was just unnecessary IMO. But the studio knows they have something really popular here and had a joy animating it, wanting to do more I guess.

They are also not blood related. Not something that's justifying the sex but i thought it should be mentioned.

It's not the fanart that's the problem. It's the subject the fanart is based on that's the problem.

And I know they're not blood related, but in this case I see it as a cheap method to justify poorly written scenarios between siblings who were obviously intended to be blood related. I'm fully aware that step sibling romance is an occurrence and that it is not strictly incest.

So, we agree that the direction of NGNL is not the best then?
It's not like they could have just asked the author or so.. many authors do that in order to make sure the adaptions are successful

I would love to see a recent LN adaption without some form of incest for once. Fake or not. I do not trust LN authors to handle this theme because they always screwed up in the past.

Incest is a loose term. They had a social illness that required them to be together and while they may be close and show that affection of eventual incest. That's up to the imagination. As far as what's written, they both just love each other a lot.

LN adaptation of the non blood relation has been around for awhile and while it has it's own flaws, it's their own perspective of how they approach it.

Anime of the season for me too. Though I would have preferred one more male character I still give it 10/10. Its hard to be perfect, but this is close enough for me I guess :D

Along with the second part of his comment, along with the general tone I got, it felt like he meant, that "your overall ratings are very low/negative"

Well, sorry if is that so (both of you), it was my misinterpretation then.

no problem, really (tbh, I wasn't looking for an apology, I was merely trying to clarify things ^^')

After you learn to differentiate tags, then learn to rank the anime for these same tags, like a Ecchi must be ecchi, a comedy must be comic, a drama must make you feel and so on...

My personal rating system first goes out to how much I was enjoying the show, and THEN, if I didn't like the show, I go over, and check, wether it did what it "promised", and rate based on that... (This system of mine is fairly new, and around half of the things on my list were rated differently, a good chunk of them on impulse. And I don't plan on rewatching most shows, just to rewisit their rating...

Also, his way of rating should be left up to him, really. Imagine yourself in his boots, getting told, that you're immature, childish, even, and should reevaluate your style of thinking.
I'm assuming, that you would feel insulted, even if you didn't vocalize it.

All i can say to you is to ignore it and the series. Or maybe even ignore japan. If you've been around the internet long enough stuff like loli's shouldn't shock you anymore.

So this anime has already pushed its way into the top 30 anime on MAL, this does not surprise me in the slightest. If there is a season 2 then I hope to see them take over each of the 14 remaining nations individually rather than all at once because it would feel so cheap if they invaded like 4 nations at once.

The real question is this, does this deserve a perfect score of 10? It is really hard to say and I think some time is needed before anyone can say if it really does deserve such a score. After marathoning the first 9 episodes and watching the last 3 weekly, the show definitely works better in a marathon format than it does in the weekly format.

What a fantastic ending to an absolutely fantastic show. Brilliant main character, very interesting plot, the music and visuals were outstanding. This show was a masterpiece. I was anticipating this show to be great at the beginning of the season, but I did not know it would be this good.

Sora was such a brilliant character. He was never given anything, he thought it through with his intelligence and wits, which is what made him such a strong character. Character interactions were always funny and clever. Every episode always left you with a big smile on your face.

A second season is needed immediately. This show was a damn masterpiece, 10/10.

I watched and readed both. Still enjoyed the hell of this show.

Enjoyment =/= quality imho. I am sure you will not deny that both of my examples feature better storytelling, characters, etc.?

NGNL wasn't bad. I still don't understand the crazy hype, but I enjoyed it.

I have the theory that each season needs one hyped anime that everyone can hype bandwagon-style. Sadly, this season's Mahouka proved to be too bad for this so they all switched to NGNL last minute.
Next season we will see the same with SAO2, Akame Ga Kill and maybe one more anime.

That actually sounds pretty plausible. Next season those seem like the likeliest candidates but I'd add Aldnoah Zero as well and put it ahead of either. Aniplex is pulling every hyping trick in its repertoire with that one from claiming it'll surpass Gundam to putting not only Gen Urobuchi but Ei Aoki (Fate/Zero) and both Hiroyuki Sawano (Titan, Unicorn, Kill la Kill) and Yuki Kaijura (SAO, Madoka, Fate/Zero) on music. I've never seen an upcoming show look more blatantly desperate for people's attention to the point where the producers will say and do anything and staff up on anyone that has ever worked on a popular franchise for them just to get people to pay notice it more.

Anyway, NGNL's est. sales are not really bad. 2nd season is totally possible.

the best guess is between 6-7k for the first volume based on Red's blog. It's not bad; but not anything jaw dropping either. With the huge boost in LN volume sales since the beginning of the anime with sales almost quadrupling for all volumes, it might entice the bean counters to green light a new season. The other issues is content. I'm not sure, but i don't think enough of the series is published for another 12 episode run. It might be a year or so.

This anime is hugely entertaining, too bad I find the MC too obnoxious & unlikeable. It made me hard to sympathize and cheer on the MC. In fact, each game they played I wish for they to lose.

Well, at least it's not as boring as the other Madhouse adaptation this season *coughmahoukacough* 7/10
