So does this anime only has 1 swimming competition that will be in the last episode or 2 or will we witness more than that? zzzzzz
after 5 episodes this show has 80% slice of life + comedy 10% talking about swimming and 10% actual swimming (Sports Genre Tag -.-)
a ALRITE slice of life n comedy show but a BAD sports anime.
3/5
my thoughts exactly..
lmao. Guess which swimming races are the most popular? The short ones. Why? Because it's boring as f to watch people swim for an extended amount of time. Swimming, like running/track, are like adrenaline shots to the audience. It's different from basketball, soccer, baseball etc. Free! didn't label itself as a sports anime, but if I were to take that label seriously, I would say it's a good sports anime since it's not overloading us with characters swimming laps. Having several different competitions in such close proximity (12 episode span) when the only two people really competing are Haru and Rin is like watching someone declare a winner at the end of each lap - totally pointless.

its starting to get borderline stupid how Rin's swim team always happens to be in the same place as the iwatobi swim team surely they can come up with better ideas for them to meet than just pure coincidence.
Always. Being twice...
I'm not asking for a competition every episode.. just maybe 1 every 4 episode.. so lets say the regionals, the nationals, and then a showdown between the main cast. Would be way more interesting to me in my opinion than a full cour of slice of life comedy.
Fixed that for you.
Well, we had a race back in episode 2. And it looks like we're going to be racing for Rei's life in episode 6 soooo. There you go =)
That many levels of competition would require them to introduce SO MANY new characters. It would be horrible and a wreck. No thanks. Also a competition between the main characters would be 100% predictable. Frontcrawl and butterfly are the fastest and Haru is a genius and Rei is not. It wouldn't even be a competition.

i'm a girl and no i do not watch only for that
is an enjoyable anime -.-
You're not watching it for some actual swimming. That says enough.
Yeah. That says she's not stupid because if someone wanted to watch ACTUAL swimming they would watch ACTUAL swimming. Just like how people who watched KnB weren't doing it to watch ACTUAL basketball - KnB is fantasy basketball. And just like how people who watched Slam Dunk and acclaim it love it for the STORY. Sounds like she's saying she's watching for the story as well.
the point is slam dunk and kuroko no basuke BOTH have tons of basketball in it. Free has barely any swimming in it. i wont even comment on ur "fantasy basketball" thing since ur obviously talking out of ur ass right now.
also WHAT story? free! has one of the most bland and boring storys ever with no plot or any substance behind it. do u really get excited over that cliffhanger (which isnt one cause we all know Rei isnt going to drown).
get real!
Iunno if you watched K-On! but it was not an anime about music. It was not an anime about the hard work and effort and trials and tribulations that one has to pour into learning how to play a musical instrument. It was not about intense plot based around concerts and the meteoric rise of a band build around high school girls. Yui learned how to play the guitar proficiently in like half an episode, it was not realistic because it was not meant to be, it was not trying to be.
K-On! was about close friends brought together by a shared activity they were all passionate about, and how this initial attraction due to said shared activity lead to time and experiences in which close bonds and friendships were fostered.
Please replace K-On with "Free!", Learning to play Guitar with "Learning to swim Butterfly", and Music with "Swimming" and you have Free! You are clearly watching the wrong show for the wrong reasons, though there actually is a fair bit more swimming in Free! than there was (probably, it has been awhile) music playing in K-On! but it is first and foremost a show about close friends going through life with their passion for the activity at hand the nucleus of the show, but not necessarily the focal point.
I'm sorry you're watching the show for the wrong reasons, but that doesn't make those of us who are watching it in a manner that makes sense for a Kyoani anime incorrect. If it pains you so much, I would recommend not keeping it up, least you hurt yourself.
