If you're saying you can switch the gender of this show so that they are all girls without changing a single thing, that's great, you know. You can do the exact same with the show Kimi to Boku (focusing on the daily lives of high school boys) which by the way has a very girly character as well

Actually no you couldn't. "Boku" and "kimi" are both pronouns that only boys use. This show doesn't even give us that much. The characters in free are actually using feminine terminology (~chan, no high school boy would call another this). When I say that you can swap without changing anything I meant that literally, not figuratively. I have no issues with guys who act "like" girls. I have issues when the creators just write their typical female character and pretend it is a male character.

They clearly use 'boku' 'ore' 'omae' in their dialogue. The name of the animation trailer was "Ore to omae no sa o oshiete yaru yo!" and Rin even repeats that in the episode.

Also, these guys have known each other since they were little. Back then, it would've been more common for other people use to -chan to refer to them. Haru says 'stop using -chan ALREADY', meaning it used to be socially appropriate for boys (and not purely feminine). But if some of the characters aren't going to let ~societal expectations~ change their affections or erase their history of closeness and decide to continue using -chan even as older boys, then whatever floats their boat, props.

I'm telling you to cut them some slack, because it actually works

You are ordering me to cut them slack because YOU like it? How very, hum, seme of you.

As for working, I doubt it. Unless they change the characters within the next 2 episodes there will be a massive drop off of viewers by episode 4 when the novelty begins to wear off.

It works because there's nothing wrong with it. Sure, go file a complaint to them so they can change the letters. Title it "STOP MAKING THE GUYS ACT SO GIRLY". See if I care, in fact please do. Most likely, nothing will change and your complaining won't really do much. Everyone else seems to be okay with it, you're the only one who seems to think differently which is fine, but no need to keep complaining.

Takuan_Soho said:
As for the rest of the post. I can't help it that you are an idiot. Here is a free clue. Your comments about Haruhi above not only prove my point, they were actually far more sexist than you are accusing me of being. "No girl would act like that, she is actling like a boy". How oblivious are you? Do I honestly have to point out that you just imploded your own argument?

Thank you for calling me an idiot. The point I was trying to make was that it's okay for some girls to act like girls, and it's perfectly acceptable to have it the other way. Excuse me, but what in the world led you to believe that I was "supporting your argument"?

You say that she strips in front of her guys and whatever, and that girls do in fact do this. I'm saying that he strips in front of everyone and it's perfectly normal for a guy to do this.

You say that the guys in this anime are acting like girls and can be exchanged with female characters without changing a thing. I say that it's perfectly normal for a guy to act this way and that you can practically do that with any show at all.

Did I say that there are absolutely no girls in the world that strip in front of guys? Did I ever say that she's acting like a boy so it's perfectly unacceptable? Stop trying to change the point I'm trying to make, because I don't remember ever saying any of these things. I remember making it clear that usually girls will not behave in this manner. Here, I'll even quote what I said and prove that I didn't accuse her of acting "outside of how her gender should act". Who comes up with those crazy accusations anyways? Certainly not me.

EarlCiel said:

Okay, so one girl changes for gym class in front boys...would KyoAni girls do that? I think not, or at least I hope not.

Actually, I don't think any perfectly sane girl would, to be honest. You'd think most girls have a least a little modesty. And privacy. And aren't complete attention hogging girls who literally are that desperate. Or that stupid.
Haruka has no shame, he will take it off no matter where he is, no matter who is front of him, no matter what
anyone says to him...he's definitely a guy xD

As you can see, I'm making my point by saying most girls don't act that way and that just because you stated two examples of girls that strip in front of guys, it doesn't mean that all girls do. I know you were trying to make the point that it is possible that a girl could say the same words, but what I'm trying to say is that in real life, girls typically wouldn't do the same. If you evaluate the situation and there are guys in front of you while you are taking of your clothes, in real life, a girl would probably think twice about taking off her clothes. How is that sexist? I'm a girl, and as a girl I'm simply saying how I feel about you using two examples of girls taking off their clothes. Need I go on further about my many thoughts on why a girl exposing herself in front of guys makes me question that actually happening?

hikoghert basically summarizes my point exactly:
hikoghert said:
even if Haruhi did act in that manner, it should not be used as an example of 'guys of Free! acting like girls', because IRL societal pressure would have molded many girls to reject acting in such a manner. Guys would more likely act in that manner.

My argument is NOT that girls who strip aren't real girls. My argument is that guys can act however they damn well please. So what if it's "girly"? There's nothing wrong with that. How is that being sexist? If anything, you're the one who needs to reevaluate all that your typing because you seem to have a problem with the creator making the guys act like girls. Fine, that's the way it is. Like I said, that's your problem and you have your own opinions so whatever.

You seem to have convinced yourself that the people moving in front of your face while you're watching the show are supposed to be girls. Fine. Just know that there are high school boys who use "-chan" maybe playfully or as a joke (they do exist) and that in this episode they do refer to themselves as "boku" every time they talk about themselves. Have a listen yourself, go watch the episode again. I watched it several times already, and no matter how many times I look at it those are guys.

I don't like those sharp movements. I was hoping the animation would be more... smooth. Kind of like Tamako Market (guess I was being too hopeful).
Haruka and Rin behave in ways that somehow feel fake to me, and the animation style made me a lil bit uncomfortable. All in all, it's alright, it's still the first episode.
(The dubstep made me laugh really loudly ahah)

Oh my God...Fanservice..everywhere...with purpose....Or maybe as an excuse- under the pretenses of being a purpose. Either way, oh my...Rin is so damn fine! And his theme music! His theme music is friggin awesome! Why did they have to make him out as the cliche antagonist? And the fangs? Not all teeth can be canines.

If I want to get a bit critical here, I'd say his personality better develop throughout this anime or it'll get stale pretty fast. Plot seems pretty nice overall and an anime about swimming is a fresh take on sports. From what's been hinted so far, neither Haru or Rin are all psyched up about team work- and the latter is clearly got ambition and no patience, and I almost hope it stays that way. Instead of bringing everyone together and preaching about the power of believing in one another and support and 'giving it your best', I want this anime to focus on personal growth and interest- but we'll see. I also dislike the voice of the tiny blond guy- sounds like an annoying kid than an actual teen.

Right now, I'm way over my head from all the fanservice. Who knew anime guys could take off their shirts so aggressively?! And the V-lines near the hipbones? Holy toned chest, flexed arms, and luscious legs dripping of chlorine water- thank God they wear boxers! I've NEVER felt this way before anime guys! I don't even WATCH those animes with pretty-boys tailored for fangirls to ogle at. Was it cause they never took off their shirts like this? What is this mysterious emotion welling up? I feel as if a nosebleed's not to far off at this rate...I hope they don't become bishie. Please, please don't be bishie or make this into a yaoi. I've got nothing against yaoi, but I really want this show to focus on the plot and keep the fanservice to a minimum so I can still have reasons to justify why I will SO watch this show every week. But seriously, that green-eyed guy's eyes keep vibrating in his sockets when he looks at Haru- I'm just crossing fingers at this point.

Also, these lines concern me, "I'll show you a nice sight" and "I want you to show me that sight again"...Are those sexual undertones I'm hearing or have I lost it? And why did Haru's hair spurt glitter when he waved it back and forth after coming out of the water? I'm all for him in a speedo but hair that sheds glitter? At least it helped me snap out of it for a bit. Anyways, best line was in the beginning, "When you're 10 they call you a prodigy, when you're 15- a genius, and by 20, you're an ordinary man". Too true, bud. But the opening song and ending song? Forget the lyrics! Do you SEE these guys shirtless?! I wonder if this 'shirtless-guy' effect will wear off soon...I think I'll keep pausing, staring, and replaying for now.

- I heard those sexual undertones too, but then again, I misinterpreted just about everything they said so I'm 100% certain I lost it
- Haruka's epic hair flip is golden. Do not question his ability to shed glitter...it's magical. Like him. xD
- I'd like to point out that as much as my eyes enjoyed seeing the speedo, I cringe whenever I see a guy wearing them IRL. I literally fall down in fetal position and hope that they walk by and never come into my sight again. There should be an age restriction on wearing those. Seeing grandpas wearing speedos isn't good for my eyesight.
- My sister actually used that quote by his grandma today. She was supposed to be studying for her finals for summer school but she used that exact line emphasizing how she's just going to be an ordinary person by the time she goes to college, so it doesn't really matter what her grades are. She's supposed to be really smart, but quoting from the anime Free? lol, she could have just used sensei's advice..."YOLO!"
- I believe I will never get tired of seeing shirtless guys in this anime. Never.
- Don't worry you aren't alone. I killed the replay button.

Nah, KyoAni had no desire to troll, they just noticed that the demographics for animation is changing and woman are now a very lucrative market. So I think they took a pre-existing script for a girls swimming club and just changed the characters to male without bothering to revise the script (outside of their little in joke about how every male character has a feminine sounding name) to appeal to that audience.

KyoAni animation is remarkably devoid of any sexual implications, even their most moe-esque shows barely have any reference to sex. Even when there is some romance, there is no sensuality. So I doubt that they meant to have any gay sexual undertones (that probably would make the show more interesting). What they are doing is having their traditional female character interactions, but they are having these male characters carry it out. I bet in a future episode we will have one of them sick, and they will have all three go over to his room ala K.On with Mio and Ritsu.

I am going to be interested to see what the dvd sale's for this series are. They should be higher than Tamako market because so many female fans have been waiting for KyoAni to give them an animation aimed at them with KyoAni's traditional high end animation. No one can blame them for being excited and hoping that this show will be great. I sympathize. However, so far the only two interesting things are Haruka's obsession with swimming and his competition with Rin. The other two main supporting characters (the two "gays" as they were called above) are pretty much voids as characters. One is the stereotypical "supportive mother type friend" the other one the "ditzy, isn't he adorable friend" (basically Ui and Yui in male form). Unless they do some serious upgrading of the characters, I really can't see this show averaging more than 3,500 per episode. The first one might be in the 7K range, but the drop off to the 2nd volume will be pretty large. Take away the fact that the characters are men, and this is just a below average KyoAni offering.

^ This. They need to enforce that law right now. My grandpa doesn't seem to understand, and this summer with all our family trips to the beach, becoming blind is something that is sure to happen very soon

Maybe I should show him Free! and at the end try to make it look like I didn't show this to get his reaction, make it look all innocent by saying "and this is why these guys are the only ones that are allowed to wear a speedo...understand?"

I wish I could actually do that and then put his reaction on Youtube. That would be hilarious. Too bad I don't have the guts to do this because my grandma would probably want to join in and make the most embarrassing comments ever. I could never walk out of the house again.

Well that was refreshing!

Characters remind me a bit of Tsuritama - all pretty likeable; topic is pretty original as far as I know (though I don't know much, there very well might be a couple of series about swimming); animation was great overall.

The most surprising (in a good way) part about this show for me was the music. The subtle hints of dubstep in the last couple minutes of the episode... it was interesting to see what KyoAni's experimenting with, and consoling to see that they're willing to take chances stepping in new directions.

True, but that doesn't change that they love trolling, and it terms of Haruhi there was temporal trolling througout the series: episode order in first series, "endless 8" in the second, date of the movie premiere and disk release. When you are 10, they call you a prodigy, when you are 15, they call you a genius, when you reach 20, you are just an ordinary person.

I was already pumped for this anime, and it was fantastic. The ED is fabulous.

I am so glad that KyoAni is doing something like this. I lose nothing of my manliness for watching this. It is different from other KyoAni shows and being a fan of the production studio, I knew I would be enjoying this.

KyoAni has been creating some awesome moe male characters for some time now, it is about time they had a show of their own!

Suddenly I have a really big urge to go swimming.

Same here~ XD

I know what I have an urge for.... I have officially crossed into creepier territory as of right now. I'm so sorry. Goodbye sanity!

Well, at least none of the guys have had sex together yet.

They almost wrestled naked in the pool though!

Ladies and gentlemen, here comes the modern era of aggressive shirt removal! I wonder how many guys will put this to the test and try it out =P

I didn't mind it so much. It does have a lot fanservice and typical KyoAni moe but with males, but I'd feel like a hypocrite if I made that into some big negative considering I easily watch the reverse. I dunno if I will watch it till the end, but I'll give it a chance.

I may watch it just to see how girls into anime/manga/games feel when having to deal with all of the fanservice for guys.

Man, if you do, I will seriously respect you. After Gargantia's fanservice dish, I've been in a bit of pissy mood until I found this odd gem. Looking forward to your future feels =)

2 guys and 2 gays
What does that even mean?

aren't they all gay?

Lol, that's what I thought...

well haru is attracted to water, so i guess he's not gay.

He's an...objectiphile? An adhesion-er?

If I had to put my finger on what I didn't like about this show it would be that if all the characters were girls, they wouldn't have had to change one bit of dialog or (outside of changing the gender) the animation.

To be clear is isn't as if they guys were acting like girls, that isn't what I am saying - it's more that they ARE girls, just drawn as boys.

Dude...stop making me question my sexuality. I'm already having a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that I just watched an anime detailed in fanservice, fully enjoyed it, will probably continue to watch it every week, and have decided to stop questioning why wet hair tossed around throws glittery water (this was recent news broken to me by Red_Keys, thanks mate). I have yet to experience such glittery water but I look forward to that encounter!

(It was a joke, please don't stab me)

But on a more serious note, after rewatching the episode, I kinda see where you're coming from. Their body language and conversations can be easily redone with females as well, that I have to admit. Although these may not be the best examples to contrast with, if we put these guys beside some other main guy characters like Edward/Alphonse Elric, L/Light, etc., they do seem more feminine. They touch each other often and easily, act in rather stereotypical anime girl forms (the happy-go-lucky, tsundere, etc.) and communicate in a familiar female sequence utilized by the average girl (based on my experiences). Of course, that may also be cause of the relaxed school environment- thus, I'm willing to give this show the benefit of doubt since it's only been the first episode and considering most actions are unisex. If the directors want to, now's the golden time to prove us wrong through the next episode and onwards but even if they don't- at the very least, we'll have a bunch of very satisfied fangirls every week.

Forgetting Haruhi, why would Kyoani be "trolling" us right now?

Because they can? It's just when I see an episode which looks and feels like it's heroes should be girls and they do behave like a bunch of schoolgirls, but they are in fact musclebound guys. I feel trolled... well not trolled, more like raped, but still...
Nah, they didn't act like girls.

Some guy said this was "NOT GAY AT ALL".

--Symbolic parallels of helping Haru-"chan" up from the water. Um. Okay.
--He's wearing a goddamn almost-naked apron. In front of a guy. wat
--Sneaking into a pool together at night. not the least bit gay nope
--Haru is so tsun/kuudere it's not even funny.
--Haru quits swimming like a kicked puppy after Rin leaves. UUHHHHH
--"Let's swim together, Nanase. If you swim with me, I'll show you a sight you've never seen before." UNDER A SAKURA TREE *flailing at this heterosexuality*
--[12:28] Why are the swimming shorts in their childhood shortshorts? ...Also, the over-the-shoulder hug there, while Haru looks away dere'ing... REALLY? NO, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
--The trophy looks like a dildo
--"Romantic, right?" AHAHAHAAAHAHAHHAAAHHAA (Haru deres) .....BWAAAAAHHHHAHAAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA
--"Did they just ditch us?" Yes, they did. They're going to get a room, because apparently Rin thinks only Haru is good enough for him.
--Makoto tries for years to get him back into competitive stri--I mean swimming, but instantly takes it back up the moment Rin arrives.
--VIOLENT SHIRT FLINGING LIKE A STRIPPER yep they went to go get a room. BECAUSE THIS IS NOT GAY
--Cue Rin turning bitter, cue Haru to inspire him over the season to change his mind (what is this a dating sim) (oh wait there is a dating sim of this)
--Nagisa sleeps on Haru's shoulder. Not gay. Nope.
--Stripping in random places. ...HOW ARE YOU EVEN ALLOWED
--Haru can't wait to strip. lemao
--NAGISA IS SKINNY DIPPING WITH GUYS WHAT OKAY SERIOUSLY?!?! YOU SAID THIS WASN'T GAY??!
--Water play. wtf
--JUST WTF
--YOU SAID THIS WASN'T GAY
--THIS IS GAYER THAN KUROBASU AND TENPURI COMBINED
--"I want you to show me that sight again"
--okay dying
--ok sers dying
--and then in the ED Rin flips his hair and holds his hand out to Haru and the latter jumps into all the gayety

DON'T LIE TO ME AND TELL ME SOMETHING ISN'T GAY WHEN IT'S OFF THE CHARTS IN HOMOSEXUALITY.

The animation was absolutely beautiful and it was a good opening episode, I'll be back for more! Plus, the ending credits sequence was pretty cool.
