Well, I was certainly wrong, I had assumed that this filler would not take place in the actual world of One Piece. Upon seeing the Navy ships I did not think it was a mirage which honestly doesn't make that much sense to me, but I had thought it was Smoker. And beyond that, I feel conflicted on this episode. By all means it is good. I love the new outfits, filler is always great with that. Franky’s is outrageous and Sanji's in particular is one of my favourite costumes of his ever, he has never looked so cute. Of course it was fun to see everybody kicking falling hail and having Robin collect the avalanche with two massive hands. And past the genuinely funny character moments like Chopper thinking there was a ghost on board, or “punch, kick, cut”, I even found Lily to be interesting. She enters the ship like a Goku figure, stealing their food like her father would have and using the justification that she's not stealing it's just laying around. She has a unique power, it's interesting how she was initially massive and is now tiny but has the ability to change her size and always keeps the strength of a giant. I love how she came here with a very dedicated mission, got caught on their ship, and proceeded to forget about what she was doing and ate their food. We saw that continued again and again as she kept losing track of her goals due to her simple mindedness. Well freaking out her head grows but her body doesn't! By all means, Lily is really good for filler standards, she's interesting, she stands out, she's funny, she has an interesting background.
So why do I feel conflicted about this episode, why did I feel bored halfway through? Other than the fact that it tries to make me invested into the stakes involved of these Neo Navy and the Navy and Lily’s father when I don't have any reason to care about any of them yet, it just feels overdone… To have Lily mutter the words “I’ll save you father” as she's drifting out of consciousness and then later to have Luffy’s eyes covered by his hat before he decides to tell her that they will help her, at this point it all felt like such a cliche. Everybody could have known that was going to happen. To introduce a filler character who has such a straightforward mission to be a detour in which Luffy agrees to help her, it's just over done. I think what filler doesn't realize is that you need to have the audience get invested into the characters and the stakes regarding the plot. As much as I think Lily is fun, I do not care about her, I do not care about her father, and I don't care about anybody except for the Straw Hats here. Instead of trying to set me up to care about them, it went straight into forcing the plot forward. Instead of having everything moved forward constantly I wish that it would not try to shove in introducing everybody involved and moving the plot forward at the same time. For me if it was given an episode of mundanity and character exploration, and then it started to move us into this plot I'd like it far more.
Interestingly I have this theory about a real Neo Navy happening in the One Piece Universe. In all honesty, it is not a theory but a fantasy, one where Magellan, Aokiji, and Smoker team up to fight the unjust navy with their own values. Yet this one feels rather boring, for this idea that they have of killing all the pirates and not giving them any sympathy to force the pirate era to an end, it’s not that far off from Akainu’s world view of crushing enemies without mercy. Then to have Ain be the by the books and serious type as Shuzo is the rash and bold type- wanting to increase his rank and willing to betray plans to do so, there was nothing about them that got me invested. At least that animal on Shuzo’s ship was a nice touch.
I would like to rehash, I did like this episode, there was just something about it that made me want to check my phone during it and I wanted to try and express what that was. |
