Pacing is too quick!!! I hope its not gonna end with 12 episodes

Bad news, at this pace, it will end the SAO arc in 12 episodes to make way for next arc.

Holy shit. Holy shit, man. Now, this episode wasn't as impacting as I wanted it to be, but still, that was tearjerking... Even after reading the entire LN, I still tear up even when I knew what was going to happen... Poor Sachi... ㅜ.ㅜ

But, I hate [well ain't that a surprise] how the anime rushes the impact of Sachi's death. This arc should have at least taken two episodes to really develop the new characters or at least let the audience sympathies with them instead of wiping them out on the spot.

I still cried though. /._.\

I'm starting to realize that all the "It was rushed" crying in the last 12+ pages is done by the Light Novel readers who want a reasonably correct adaptation.

I mean seriously guys, if it bothers you that much you best stop watching the series cause if my calculations are correct they still have 30+ chapters to finish in 22 episodes if they hope to clear the Ainclad arc. There's going to be a lot more changing and rushing involved in the story. It's just the nature of the beast in regards to Novel to screen adaptations.

Unless your willing to invest 30 million US dollars and give it to the anime production team and ask them to make the series 50 episodes so that can adapt the story from the novel line for line, your going to have to settle for rushed moments.

more 'Rushed' thoughts for Light Novel readers...

--------------

They do a good job showing Kirito's mental anguish and the fact that there were times he tried to break his lonely solo cycle and become part of a group it ended up horribly. The "Beater" stigma attached to him is also haunting him. Especially after he loses Sachi and the group and the guild leader unfairly blames him and disowns him after he came clean about being a "beater". The reality is the Black Cats were doomed to die cause they were naive and foolish. The reason that Kirito joined them is because they almost lost a few members in some battles and Kirito rescued them. But Kirito can't forgive himself for what happened to her, even after she leaves him a farewell message telling him not to.

Sachi should have never been thrown out in the front lines. She could have been a better support player being an in town specialist. But in this game there is no second chances. :(

Hmm, fast pacing or not, I'm going to assume that this episode existed to make him develop anthropophobia or something. But hey, Sachi was one cute lassie.

Sounds like the next episode will be intense.

This is how episode 3 should've really went. I don't know how I thought of this but its 3:30 and I'm braindead.

So since this episode sucked uh this is how ep 3 actually went. Retarded crossover with Fate/Zero and other references.

BLACK CATS OF THE FULL MOOOOOON!

K so Black Cats of the Moon people are getting owned by monster things but Kirito saves the day since he’s A HERO. What a nice guy. He takes them to the best training spots and shit so they can get better and stuff. Sachi is also really cute.

LATER, dat thief guy opens the chest cuz he’s a dumbass. BUT dun dun dun, instead of being beat down by the monstars. He takes out hilts that look like keys. Then, 2 lightning fast strikes hit the axe dude (or w/e weapon he’s using) and he dies.

Lancer dude takes out his red and yellow lances and beats a few monsters up. Sachi starts falling in love with him after seeing his face. Since Lancer is being all badass he starts talking about LOYALTY and HONOR. Unfortunately he trips and stabs himself through the chest. Being Lancer is suffering. Then the mace and shield dude dies since who uses a mace. Kirito signs in as using Heathcliff’s password and starts duel wielding Excalibur and his jedi lightsaber. He uses like uh, Eclipse and stuff dies.

UNFORTUNATELY, Caster appears with his army of squid monsters. Sucks to be Black Cats of the Full Moon guild. Oh yeah uhh, Sachi is being useless. Then Kirei, I mean stupid thief dude that opened the box is REJOICING about people and monsters dying. Uhh, what else should I put here… Caster made his giant Cthulhu monster so oh noes Kirei and KIrito cannot win! (Since Kirito’s Excalibur can’t shoot giant beams of light). OH NO DESPAIR AND STUFF!

BUT THEN KAMINA CAME TO SACHI AND SAID “ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWAH.” So Sachi used spiral power and made her lance into a Giga DRILL BREAKERRRRRRRRR. Sachi pierced the heavens! and killed Caster and his monster. She got to lv 9001 from the battle exp and beat the final boss =D. Now everyone is free and happy! Yay.

All that I see in this thread was raging LN readers that thinks that they can do a better job at adapting this anime.

[rant]
"Okay let's make Aria a 2 episode and this a 2 episode and the next also a 2 episode, let's see how we can actually finish volume 1 while inserting these side stories."

for god sakes, they've actually decided to insert the side stories, but like usual these people doesn't know when to be thankful. You guys need to fucking stop comparing every tiny bit of the LN to the adaptation. Why bother watching the adaptation when every second you watch it you'll feel disappointed just because some things cannot be on par with the LN.

You watch this because you want to see the world of SAO and their characters move and talk, not making it a substitute of the LN.

I'm actually thankful that they even gave Sachi a full episode not just a 3 second flashback.
[/rant]

Question:
Would you rather see "this" episode animated as it is? OR not see it at all because of the time constraint?

First Day + Aria = 2 eps.
Sachi episode -OP -some guild crap +longer fight scene +explanation of Red Nosed Reindeer would be better IMO.

SAO is not that long if we're only talking volumes 1+2. The animators have all the time in the world with 24? episodes for SAO. I guess they really want ALO... *sigh*

Fate/Zero was very faithful to the LN and widely acclaimed.

Yes, but the adaptation should be fulfilling by itself. If not for having read the novels a few times, I wouldn't even have had any enjoyment watching this episode.

Seriously, I would of have been fine withjust Kirito quickly talking about the events to Asuna in Egil's shop. It's not like they have so many episodes to spare ...

Red-Nosed Reindeer should have been an OVA, it has no impact whatsoever as an episode 3 ...

Perhaps, but if it was the exact same episode as this, I'd still rather it never happened. Like I said, that moment when he tells Asuna about it in Egil's shop would be good enough.

That was retarded (maybe not for sales) my point is that Fate was a lot more faithful to the LNs and it worked very well. SAO does not need to be rushed IMO.

I haven't read the LN, actually, I never read LNs. But for some reason, the episode seemed awfully rushed. Although I have a feeling Hayami Saori's character Sachi will play an important role to develop Kirito's character. Damn, she is in the OP and I thought at least she will survive through the trap.

The episode tried to carry a lot of emotion, but it couldn't in the end, because it felt too rushed. They could either make at least a couple of episodes to let the characters develop or just make a flashback episode.

5/5 none the less. Because I think Sachi's character will help develop Kirito's character a lot.

This is how I rate this episode,
Based on the episode itself (Assume that I didn't read the LN at all), this is episode is pretty much decent, but something is still missing like the scene when Kirito fight with the boss (which was skipped and there's no proper outcome from the fight) and I didn't feel as much emotional as I have in any sad scene in some anime. Despite all these, there is some development in the main character, which was good.
So I rate this 4/5

Based on the LN and correlating with that anime...
OK, from the way I see from this episode, this side story should be about 1 1/2 to 2 episodes worth.
Yet again, it is rushed, but unlike the previous episode, some important points from the LN are still missing!!!
- How Kirito met with Black Cat guild
- The outcome from the boss fight (One of the most important point!!! )
- Kirito's reaction when retrieving the revival item (One of the most important point!!! )
- The message sent to Kirito scene is too short and fast and not that emotional as what I had in LN.
So I gonna rate this 3/5

Sword Art Online is turning out to be a true masterpiece.
That being said this episode left me sad but still intrigued by such a great story. And looking at certain things while having my own little theory I expect to see Sachi again. Something tells me that she'll be back (and no, I haven't read the novels so I'm purely speculating here). 5/5

This episode felt way too rushed. Many events moved along too swiftly, characters were painfully underdeveloped, and the amount of emotional content was overwhelming. Nonetheless, I loved this episode, since it changed my overall impression of this series. Honestly, I felt like crying - when Sachi died, when the revival item was found useless, and when Sachi's message was playing, my heart was torn to bits. The fact that I wanted to know more about her character but never will makes me even more depressed.

this is a bad episode 3 IMO.. i haven't read the novels but unless the next episodes tie this in, i'ma blame the series composer for just lamely putting this in the middle.. now i don't know if they're still going for chronological or random orders, because in either case they're not doing a good job presenting it.. the only thing we have are dates and our imagination to fill the gap of one year after last episode.. anyway, as a stand alone episode, this was indeed sad, but they didn't give much to give more impact.. 1-episode characters are hard to feel for.. and they weren't successful to give me the prospect that this is needed either for world building or for protag's character development.. heck, to me, suddenly doing an emotional episode without making us knowledgeable enough of the world beforehand would not really have an effect.. so hopefully, the future episodes can do something about it..

There's a lot of time skips in this series, but that is to be expected and I don't really mind. This episode was pretty emotional. Poor Sachi ;_;

I also wonder why he hid his real level from them. Maybe they would've hated him if they knew. I'm surprised there wasn't actually a way in their interface to read his level though.

I think that there will probably be a lot of questions after this ep, so I'll just explain some of the things that I noticed weren't explained enough.
*Right after Sachi dies, there is a short time skip.
*Kirito knew that there would be trouble on the upper floors, but didn't tell them because he wasn't meant to know based on what he had told them (lying about his level). He still thought that they could manage somehow if they got in trouble as his level was really high (what he meant when he said his arrogance had killed them). He also wasn't aware of the hidden door, and also knew that the chest was trouble. But he didn't say it immediately, because he was having doubts about how to explain how he knows. When he decides to tell them to stop, too late! they all get annihilated except for Kirito, who managed to survive. If Kirito had not helped them, they wouldn't have been at the level to attempt the dungeon therefore wouldn't have died. Well, that's his reasoning.
*Kirito lied about his level because he wanted to fit in more. Kirito liked the feeling of being depended upon, as he was solo this whole time and never socialized.
*Kirito had the slightl hope that the revive item would work on someone who has been dead for that long because they didn't know for sure WHEN the person died. For all they knew, they could still be kept alive, then killed later all at once when the game ended. Doesn't make much sense, but he was pretty desperate.
*Outside of the 'safe zones' (towns, etc) players can hurt players, so PK is possible. Inside the safe zone, you can not take damage, and any attacks will be nullified (except in PvP). This is how Klein managed to fight against the Dragon Alliance. Of course, killing another player is not in your best interests in the first place as more people = more chance of beating the game.

etc...
I thought the ep in general was alright, just really rushed.

This person basically answered everything that wasn't covered in the light novel. I understand people wanted to make this a 2 episode anime. However, the light novel itself didn't cover a great amount of detail either, and important factors was explained.
Keep in mind, red nosed reindeer is a side story, it was very vaguly and briefly explained within the actual novel itself. The side story didn't really have that much of an extended script.

Their pacing is kept this way basically means sometimes the mental process of the character cannot be adequately explained at times. I kinda hoped they would have more "thinking script". Like with characters close lipped, and they talk about what they are going through their head.

There is apparently 25 announced episodes. According to the pace they are going at now, you can assume 1 of 2 things.
1. They want more screentime for what's to come, I won't say who or what unless you PM me. Or better yet, go read the light novel if you are a fan of spoiler like me :).
2. They are not making 3 seasons out of this anime, instead is cramping everything into 1.

Basically that's what I'm guessing by the way they are going with this anime so far.

Edit: So after reading some of the latest comments, i want to add just one thing. This felt out of order because it's a side story in the main novel. It is only explained later when it was requested to the author to fully explain his past . His personality on SAO before meeting certain someone was defined by this event. His choice to be alone, to be a solo, to not drag anyone down. He is thoroughly scarred by this experience. I think having this episode in a chronological order made the impact seemed a slightly light.

The "hope" of establishing the guild in their own building started a serious death flag.

The moment they mentioned they wanted to fight monsters equal to their level, it was automatic recipe for disaster in making. It's known in games that fighting monsters of equal level is increased difficulty and increased chance of dying.

Kirito agonized over his death for half a year. Interesting that Sachi left behind a message at Xmas for him. That message may have given him some closure on the incident.

I'm certain that Kirito will team up with Asuna again at some point since they she is the only other player to ever synch with him for concerted attacks.

If the story sequence is a bit rushed, I wonder how many eps the series will actually run?

Wow time really flew by in this episode! o_O Really sucks to see all of Kirito's guild members die the way they did. It looks like this game is starting to take its toll on Kirito both emotionally and psychologically. Although this episode was pretty dark and depressing, it was still really cool to see Kirito owning all of those monsters and that huge psycho Santa! Dude's a total beast!

I felt really bad when Sachi died in this episode, I was really starting to like her character. She was kinda of like a warm gentle light for Kirito inside of the dark world of SAO. I wonder how close they really were though. I mean they slept in the same bed for crying out loud! Too bad we'll never know now. Oh well, great episode overall. Loving this anime so far!

well i think it is because we atleast had read 1 volume before we got to red nosed thus we can sympathize more with kirito... that or the LN is more detailed.

ah..hayami saori, her voice is so awesome...made the whole scene seem so much sadder (aah, that moment from Gundam AGE!!!)
looking forward to the next episode~~black swordman~~

the episode was really interesting.lots of action.but i think i have found a fault of sword art online.as we can see the person who dies on the virtual world dies on the real world too.but except kirito none of the others doen't really care about that.for example black cats leader committed suicide in the end, don't you think this makes the anime loss some points.other than that everything is great.one thing don't you guys think there isn't any relation among the episodes.i mean each episodes are starting from a different point.

yea well in the light novel it went from 1 to 74... and i got in the wagon midway through the trans of volume 1 so no side stories... now that was confusing

Yeah lol, people complaining about pacing when the fact that the LN itself jumped pretty much into the 3/4 half of the game.

honestly, people who have already read the LNs should really stop comparing, because they're clearly biased by the details in LN. Even I've read the LN, I just shut down my thoughts about the LN and just enjoy as a stand alone anime.
