Seems like some of us were disappointed when episode two came out. But seriously, I beg to differ. For someone like me who didn't read the LN and whatnot, I would say that the episode was presented fairly well. Lots of action & nice fighting scenes.
Can't wait for the next episode! =D

If I didn't read the LN, this would be an awesome episode. But since I read the LN, they seriously butchered the best part of Aria, Asuna and Kirito's meeting and how they got to be so close. The part about Diabel was slightly disintegrated but didn't affect the story a whole lot and Argo's character is mostly used to connect Kirito and Diabel's situation so it also didn't affect too much of the basis of the story.

Doesn't this make you hungry?

I kind of prefer the adaptation this way because as I recall they don't really get close until much later

Won't even bother. Just buy out when it's out on the net. I saw Berserk Swords and Fate ones along with FF ones so most likely this sword will be available to buy. Too bad I saw only one anime/FF sword made to be used for combat also. I would love to use this one to hack shit like wood.

Or to fight off intruders tbh like in this article:

GASP! If only it were an English Release. Want that Elucidator so badly. XD

I believe it's the one that they used as a basis for the Anime version. I remember that interview...
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/anime-spotlight/2012/summer/sword-art-online

Speaking of Anime Contents Expo, you all actually made Elucidator (Kirito's sword) and displayed it?

It's convenient to have a sword on hand as reference for the animation, so we originally planned to buy a cheap one. Elucidator is a little long for a one-handed sword, but we wanted to know what it was like to swing such a sword, and how it would move. Then our producer, Kashiwada-san, said, “Then why don't we make the real thing?” And he even talked about making Asuna's Lambentright in addition to Kirito's Elucidator. When we don't have events, all our animation staff uses them to practice their sword skills (smile).

The boss fight was amazing, but this episode had one of the most pointless sacrifices I have ever seen. You can’t afford to let anyone die, even if they have been deceiving you, because players are your most important and most scarce resource. I can’t think of anyone who would turn down a health potion in a situation like that. I doubt we’ll get to see it, but I would really like to know what kind of society the players ended up forming in the game. Not everyone has to be a warrior, and they made it sound like there are a finite amount of enemies so people can go through the entire game by being a blacksmith or something and support the warriors.

No, Asuna will not be in the next episode.
Not unless the author decides to change the story.

And @ScarletMuse- thanks for the compliment.
I know what beta testing is like, so I kinda feel for the poor testers who got all that pressure.

Heck, the developers might fundamentally change the game for its release, and new players would still expect a beta tester to know what's going on. >.<"

I've been in closed betas before and, I can admit being in a closed beta gives you far more of a advantage then, being a regular player however in normal cases this isn't a big deal since there is no loss other then, time for new players. With that said I don't approve of the hatred towards beta testers in SAO however if your life was on the line you wouldn't want to go out and, test different methods for fighting and, etc. you would want any and, every bit of information to keep your life the furthest away from danger

Well, a good episode. And if the next one, RNR, is just like the light novel version, there's gonna be some emotional moments.

the reason why he died and refused the potion was already cleared in the past pages, he life had already taken fatal damage and he was dead the minute he hit the the floor, his hp was only following suit like how most rpg's are, the potion would have no effect on an already dead man so there is no point wasting it when kirito was still alive and well and may need it

Man, can't lie this is damn good, but why do I feel like it's lacking something fundamental. Why can't I put my finer on it god dammit.....

Well reading some of your comments maybe I feel like this is slightly rushed without me even realizing I feel this way. Maybe I was just looking for some of the extra character development that is in the LNs, but regardless still a great start to the series.

I guess, it is as everybody mention about "Anime being too rushed then" While I could understand the logic behind each character action in most of the anime I watched. I not see much of logic here. So may someone explain this to me?

1. That knight guy, so it is in fact that he is just pretending to be a good guy, but greedy inside? Since he told that everybody will have equal distribution in the loot, and change the strategy that everybody should finish it together to his single finish just so that he could steal the rare to his own? (As MMO player myself, I would says that this kind of greedy person is failed as leader though.)

2. Main char seem to be the only guy who realized that the knight guy is such a greedy loot stealer, but he seem to think good of him when he flash it back??

3. In any MMO, it is important to have party. as main char said so himself that there are many things impossible to do it alone. Then why he chose to act like a bad guys and ditch everybody in the end, when he is actually a nice guy and could lead them if he explain it well about how the boss pattern changed from beta?

4. Why is nobody slap those who keep complaining about beta tester this, beta tester that yet? Seriously, in real MMO, it is not beta tester job to start over with newbies and teach them how to play..

I have explained this before, but that was nearly 500 messages ago. I'll post it again.

s2012k1993 said:

I haven't read the novel, but this episode seemed well paced. It also helped that the episode didn't stop every two minutes to explain what was going on.

It was clear from the beginning that Diabel was hiding something from others. How could his party have located the first boss and known about the change in the boss' attack style unless they actually have fought the boss? How was it that he picked up on who Kibaou was doubting before anyone else did? Almost as if Diabel wanted to distance himself from the suspicion of being a beta tester. I'm not sure if Kirito immediately picked up on these suspicions, but Diabel definitely realized that Kirito was a beta tester. At least three times, Diabel casts a suspicious look towards Kirito's direction. Diabel even becomes best friends with Kibaou in order to portray himself as a leader/hero.

That is what makes Diabel's sacrifice all the more surprising. If Diabel had been conniving against his party all along, he would have immediately grabbed Kirito's potion and healed himself. Instead he reveals his suspicions that Kirito was a beta tester to Kirito. This reveals to us Diabel's true intentions. He had already realized that there had been division between the beta testers and the first timers. He tried to bring the two groups together. Unfortunately, to an outsider, it would look as though he was plotting something behind their backs. The only way to maintain all his hard work so far and reveal his true intentions was through his sacrifice. Though, I have to admit, it did feel cheesy and a bit contrived, but I will give the episode the benefit of the doubt.

Now what the episode did fail to clarify is how Diabel's actions changed Kirito. The only interaction I see of Kirito having with Diabel is Diabel's death scene. All of a sudden Kirito realizes Diabel's intentions and the meaning behind his sacrifice. The audience has been given clues about Diabel's intentions all along, but I haven't seen evidence that Kirito himself has noticed what we, the audience, have noticed. If the episode had worked on that, the final scene of Kirito's 'betrayal' would have made much more sense and carried a lot of depth. But, oh well, this is what we have.

Finally, the reason, I assume, for people not getting along well is due to the very fact they are even playing the game. Realize that both Kirito and Asuna lack social skills. I wouldn't bet against others being the same in nature. After all, look at the normal Kirito's sister. She has no need to play SAO. The series wants us to assume that these players aren't all normal, at least in a social way.

Well, I never read any of the light novels, (and frankly i'm surprised how many people here have), but I thought the episode was really good. I'm sure it sucks that it didn't cover a lot of material from the novels, but from someone who hasn't read them, it didn't really feel like it was missing anything. I wish they would of made the series longer to compensate for all the original content, but I think this series is really awesome so far. Still 2 episodes in, so it might get worse, or it might get even better. I'll definitely be watching every episode.

Read the first four volumes of the LN. Good, but I don't really have a drive to continue reading.

As for this episode, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. As a reader of the LN, I can say the anime did a nice job with the introduction of Asuna and Kirito, the "beater" term, and Egil.

First: Fuck you LN readers! Damn so fucking annoying every time comparing every little shit and the whole anime discussion becoming one big LN conversation comparison. Freaking annoying. It makes me wish they only made original anime.

Now to the episode. Well interesting enough but personally am still just watching to see where this is going but i do have one big question about the eating scene. Why to they eat? Does it give them points or something? Because certainly eating in the game does nothing to your stomach in reality. Also what about their real body needs? I guess people that lived with others can be found and brought to a hospital where their bodily needs will be cared but people living alone could die from lack of food and water before
they are found. I guess many of those 2000 didn't just die by losing in the game.

Sorry bout that. You know how much Harry Potter fans complained about the movie adaptations. It's kinda like that.

As for your questions both were answered adequately in the novels but let me explain it to you as well. It wasn't really included in episode one but in the LNs Kayaba Akihiko gave the Japanese government a two hour grace period to disconnect the players from the main server in order to transport them to hospitals. This means every single SAO player, even those who live alone like Klein.

As for hunger in-game the system is built such that a player feels hunger and fatigue in-game to presumably make it more realistic. When you eat in-game the system is just tricking your brain into thinking it's already full from eating virtual food. Real sustenance actually comes from liquid nutrients via IV drip. You can actually go w/out eating virtual food but you'll suffer from a constant feeling of virtual hunger. Same applies to rest and sleep. Worst case you'll suffer from cases of fainting when the fatigue is high enough. And if you faint on a dungeon or field that could be very VERY dangerous.

It looks like they are putting it into one episode again i dont know about that i feel it should be two episodes because of the way that short story was, it was perfect for splitting it into 2. They also seem to of shoved Argo the Rat into this episode which is strange since they cut her out of Aria in the Starless Night where she actualy did appear and played a somewhat meaningful role and put her into the third episode where she did not appear.....

Fine i get the hunger system in game but all the other stuff bring even more questions. If he disconnected the players for two hours couldn't they manage to pull them out of it at that time? Also did he also gave the government a list of the names of the players? Because as i said people living alone would have no one to notice they are in the game or when people knowing them do notice certainly will be after any two hours given, it could take days or weeks.
Also was this guy already in hiding somewhere at the launch of the game? Because what he did will certainly make him a top list wanted man. They haven't managed to arrest him after a whole month?

Maybe am just running ahead of myself and this will be answered in later episodes but if not then i really have to wonder.

Well you're right and some questions will be answered later on but I'll try to answer the ones w/c will not turn out into major spoilers kay^^ About the disconnection thing giving them a 2 hour grace actually served to reinforce the fact that everything was going according to Kayabas whims. There are several conditions w/c actually trigger the "kill switch" namely: disconnection from an outside source of electricity for ten minutes, being cut off from the system for more than two hours, or any attempt to: unlock, dismantle, or destroy the Nerve Gear. If any of these conditions are met, the brain destruction sequence will start. These conditions have been made known to the government and the public through mass-media in the outside world. This would effectively mean that while the government may try to go against the instructions there will still be a very large risk of killing off the players. They need to race the clock and find a way to dismantle the NervGear in under two hours or the players will die. The machine has enough black boxes to baffle even the co-developers who worked w/ Kayaba. Granted that they do find a way to remove it will there be enough time and knowledgeable manpower to effectively carry it out all throughout the country and actually make it in time to save all the thousands of players trapped in-game? Will the parents and friends actually agree to play "russian roulette" w/ the lives of their loved ones at stake? Lot's of problems and the government was basically just as confused and panicked as the players were.

Because of the anime I decided to look into the LN and reading the side story and this episode is based off of I felt like alot of things would have had more meaning had they portraited it in a different way. The anime isn't bad hell from someone who was new to the series I didn't think it was bad at all, I had a couple similiar concerns as posted in the comments above but I didn't let them eat away at me.

After reading the LN It gave me of a background on Asuna, in the anime you sort of meet a random player and just befriend them but in the LN shes like this completely negative girl who just things its fine to die when it happens ... resting in safe areas of dungeons and not leaving the dungeon until she has weared out her weapons. Small things like this gave another scenes like her running up to Kirito has he leaves and breaking a smile and giggle more significance because you see her transform from someone who didn't interact with anyone to someone who is more open to help and advice after her time with Kirito (alot of which was cut off). And then thats just a small portion of my concerns but I won't list them out on here, if you're curious you can always look into it yourself.

The anime would definitely take too long had they tried to tend to every little need of the LN but I can see where the fans are coming from as well after reading them.

I glanced at the LN, it's well written compared to the manga, but i simply prefer watching the animated version for the sword action.

Well one part of the nervgear is real already:

That island alone gets a few game deaths every year so it's nothing new, but it seems to be increasing everywhere.

The entrance of Asuna was sadly spoiled, other than that it was a great episode
There are more people left ingame than that group attacking the first floor boss right?

Of course,
only 2000 of the 10000 died, not 9900+

Well 'Aria in the Starless Night' has a short continuation of it in the Material Editions section on baka-tsuki. Also he wrote a sequel for Aria set 4 days after called 'Rondo of the Transient Sword' though only 10% of it is translated atm.

Sadly we wont see either of these things in the anime since the next episode is already quite a bit past both of these maybe some day in OVA's.
I am still kind of sad that they skipped Kirito's first day story i liked it and it conected well with the novels version of Aria since his sword was brought up alot. They cut that stuff though which is to bad.

I just finished that part and I've got to say that the fight could've been quite epic and the ending would also be nice.

Hmm. The order is messed up though xD. It is also weird that episode 1 is a side story and not 1 from volume 1.

Huh?
Episode 1 was no side story. It was chapter 2-4 from volume 1 if I remember correctly.
Episode 2 was a side story, but I read somewhere they'll be doing the story in chronological order.

If they did it in order wouldn't Rondo of the Transient Sword be next ? The trailer for the next ep didnt look like it was set during that chapter
