Shiki. What more can be said about this series than ''what a ride''! Seriously though, if I were to look at this series, strictly based on it's core elements, it would probably be just another anime. However, the truth is that it's not just the ''string it together'', type of anime. Shiki had so many factors that contributed to what could possible be claimed as one the greatest anime of 2010 (Yes, I know i'm late!) Either way, a very good 9/10 for me. It had so many great elements, however, just didn't feel that it went the whole mile. It's quite possible we might get to see some more action in the upcoming future by which the preview might have led me to believe. One thing however, is for certain. Muroi and Sunako are ''not'', dead yet! (0.0) Shiki completed!

If there were a "second season", it should be an OVA rather than a new series. That way they can easily and quickly kill that stupid, idiot, deserves a painful, slow and excruciating death Muroi and bitch in sheep's clothing, waste of space, deserves a painful, slow and excruciating death Sunako.

How I wish the old man would stab Sunako... but since he went on a rant before he killed her I expected Muroi whacking him from behind seeing as though he just woke up. I guess there are no winners in this slaughter. Though it would be a good alternate ending if the old guy did kill Sunako - the leader of shiki then lit a cigarette while he died in the fire which would've been dramatic.

I loved this show. as expected the village "died out". I think Megumi's words had heavy meaning. that a village like that really shouldn't of existed.

so wait... it took the villagers THIS LONG to finally get and use guns even though the shiki had them? speaking of guns that Seishirou bastard maybe lived?

and Tatsumi lived through all that to have a decent fight with Natsuno. so if it takes a whole lot more for a werewolf shouldn't Yoshie be alive still too?

glad to see he got Kaoru and Akira out and too the big city. too bad Natsuno didn't make it.

I really wanted that bad ass old guy to finish off that evil little Sunako. why do people sympathize and like her? it's just like old guy said she's just an evil little murderess. of all people that damn "monk" lives too? an accomplice to evil.

Still I can't see it ending like this especially without a confrontation between Ozaki and that traitor monk. If the monk and Sunako win I won't be happy with this kind of ending. still after a slow start I'm glad I stuck with this.

It saddens me to see a lot of my favorite characters dead - especially Ricchan and Tohru-chan :(

This series started really bad - the first 3 episodes were boring, but after that it got epicly epic <3 10/10

The ending was a bit unsatisfying for me. I'm hoping the specials will wrap it up.

In the end I have mixed feelings.

On the positive side, it was a really interesting anime. It did wrap up in the allotted episodes. The characters were good.

On the negative side, the pacing was so slow in the beginning. The humans became ridiculous, the priest failed me on a whole I can't believe he became one of them, the double suicide out of Nasos was pointless, and it was just a need to shed lots of blood. Interesting ending, but still hm...

Overall 7/10

I have mixed feelings, but I mostly liked this episode (Megumi's death, Yuuki's lines, the fate of the village, etc.). However, I really don't like how they never explained some things that happened a few episodes ago, like: What happened after Seishirou and Yuuki were caught by the villagers when they were on the roof of that building, or did they just escape?

I'm not disappointed with the ending...
...because Akira was alive.
As well as Toshio.

I also like the way how the villagers killed Megumi!
Using a road roller to hold her!!! That serves her right!!! XD

Did Muroi-san became a shiki too?

Muroi disguised himself as a woman and drove off in the blue car with Sunako in the chest.

It's uncertain whether Muroi turned into a werewolf, or whether Tatsumi/Natsuno died by dynamite (seems like an excuse to escape the fire).

I am... a little bit disappointed. I was expecting for Sunako to die, because there's no point in killing all the shiki and burn down the whole village if that whore source of disaster is still alive. Muroi-san, you're one damn of a pedophilia =____=

Megumi's death was to be expected, but I have no idea that it'll be that cruel. And at the end, the pink haired woman whose mother turned into shiki and forced her to drink her blood alone, was she going out with Natsuno's father? And I'm not sure, but I don't think she's human any more. :/
Are there any points in showing us the whole episodes if it turns out like this? Maaan, it really is disappointing. >____>

The moment when Natsuno saw Tohru's and Ritsuko's death is kinda touching, though, and when Megumi had a flashback of Natsuno is really annoying, but still dramatic. Overall, I will still give this anime 10 for its awesomeness in these past few months, since it's the only anime I can enjoy of the season :/

DAMNIT!!!! Muroi FREAKING LIVED!!!! GOD HE SHITTED ME UP THE WALL!!!! but im happy that Sunako made it out... Thinking that she has been alive all that time, you really cant think about killing her that easy hahaha

Megumi i loved her... why did she had to get killed like that =[ and Natsuno.... Ooo WHY!?!

also in both ways i hated but loved the ending.... hated it cause well they burnt the whole place and not killing the whole Shiki but then i loved how they show Muroi and Sunako escaping =]

OMG. I am so speechless. Sunako & Muroi-san are most likely dead. I didn't care about Muroi-san, but Sunako was a favorite of mine.
Then there's Megumi. I know that a lot of people don't like her, and are happy about her death, but I did. I think she helped make the show more interesting. And then she said: "You guys are the ones who're strange!" right before she died, and I was thinking about how true that was.
The only time I cried in the whole episode was when Natsuno died. Although we didn't see it happen, there's no way the two of them could've gotten out of that situation. He was such a good character.
Someone I wish that did die was Toshio. He went way too far. End of story.

In all, I started the series hating the Shiki, and hoping that Toshio would defeat them. But seeing as how the village dealed with the situation, and eventually grew too harsh, I gradually switched to rooting for some shiki to survive. I'm glad the village burned down in the end.

Also, can ANYONE please help me understand two things.
1- Who was in the blue car at the end, and what was in the box? Was that Muroi & Sunako? :o (JUST REWATCHED, and I'm confirming that it was Muroi driving. The person had glasses and the same eyes as him.)
2- Who got on the bus during the credits that the two kids (forgot their name) were surprised to see?

Does this mean a sequel? Because although the people in the car might be who I said, I have never seen the two people on the bus..

(Woah, I just realized how much I wrote, sorry).

to answer your second question... im pretty sure that was Natsuno's parents....

Replying to all people who keep making the same questions:

- Sunako is a normal shiki not a werewolf.
- The F****** pedophile monk is a werewolf. BTW, only the jinrou can maintain their eyes normal as human and if you notice the other shiki cannot.
- The specials will not be a epilogue (after the end), it will be ep. 20.5 and 21.5, which means it will explain to us everything that happened before the end.
- The car in the end was Muroi and Sunako on the box.
- The bus on the ending epilogue was the siblings, Natsuno´s dad, the fat nurse and the redhaired girl that appeared once locked inside her home with her shiki mom. Which means she is not Natsuno´s mom (since when Natsuno´s mom was redhaired?=_=).
- Natsuno saved Akira and Kaori (no they weren't on another city by magic).

IN THE END:
PEOPLE on the bus were NOT shiki (the ones on the bus are all humans!).
The only shiki alive at the end was Muroi and Sunako.

I doubt we will have a second series since they already made the end similar to the light novel, and the manga is currently on chapter 38 on Japan, and they are still on the village and in war Shiki VS Humans.

If you guys didn't understand many things go read the manga, it explains everything. I mean everything! and has a big bonus that are the awesome scenes they removed from the anime.

I liked how Sunako survived. and muroi killed that berserker granpa. He was so annoying.
So villgers went out the village too. and they are the only ones to know muroi because muroi is a jinrou he can walk out anytime. Police won't believe that muroi is a vampire even the vilagers told.

He was my favorite as well.

I would say, that there is something missing with ending, it is just too empty, too simple, there are still unanswered questions. I realy enjoyed this anime, every episode made me realy excited, and number of episodes was very nice, and despite of story, I somewhat liked Sunako, for startest, because she is cute ;] I would not be angry for next season ;>

Well, I was kinda expecting it to end like the novel did.

Although, I initially disliked Megumi, she became one of my favorites by the end.
Would have liked her to survive, she made one badass vampire.

Sunako and Seishin surviving - I approve.
Clearly there weren't supposed to be any clear winners in this show.
Hopefully they learned a bit tho, so next time when they try to convert a village, they'll do so successfully.

All in all, Shiki will be one of the few animes that might receive a perfect score from me.

in my opinion, they made it pretty convenient because muroi turned into a jinrou (shiki dies first, while jinrou like tatsumi's explanation doesnt take long to wake up again) and is now going to be the caretaker of sunako in place of tatsumi. If he just turned into a shiki, which would take days, well he would probably burn first in the forest fire and sunako would be dead. Overall im glad sunako didnt die. I also believe that tatsumi and natsuno arent dead. Just like tatsumi said but they're stuck and it would take a while to get out. Unless they get pierced in the chest by the boulders that is falling above them. Not to mention if they do not get pierced, they have a lot of blood down there they can drink, well i dont really know if shiki's blood is edible for them though.

I thought it was a great episode. I feel really bad for Megumi though. All she wanted since the beginning was to leave behind this drab village and live an exciting life in the big city. When all the mayhem went down, she thought she finally had a chance to go because Tatsumi wouldn't stop her. Then she gets killed so gruesomely.

Also, Damn. Natsuno dynamited himself (and Tatsumi?). That would suck.

I can't wait for the BD specials, I want to see some of the stuuff that happened in the middle of 20 and 22 (hopefully a story about HOW Akira and Kaoru were saved by Natsuno?).

Edit: Didn't Tatsumi say something about all the werewolves being alive? Does that mean that one girl Seishiro shot is alive?

For those interested, here's two YouTube users who have 6 of the tracks commonly heard in Shiki on their channels:

http://www.youtube.com/user/Aayai
http://www.youtube.com/user/witteveenraindrop#p/u/2/8rwfZb96uhg

Just thought I'd share it. I really love the music in Shiki - it helped set the mood quite well. I'm sure there are others that would like to hear these tracks again, too.

Edit: @Garlogan below me - Natsuno's mom left a note saying she didn't want to stay with the family anymore - but that sounded completely out of her character, not to mention she was acting like she was bitten. I think they actually showed her encountering a shiki, but I'm not 100% sure. Anyways, she was likely taken and killed by the shiki and did not rise up.

At least this explains what Natsuno was doing while he wasn't in many of these last few episodes.

I have mixed feelings about the way this ended but I did like the episode very much. Ouch to Megumi--that was rough. I don't like how Muroi turned out either.

Unfortunately, the final episode cut a lot of important scenes.
In the original novel, Seishin told Sunako about how the life is being like.
That was really deep and impressed me.
Lastly, he said something like "Even though you are forsaken by God, you still should survive, because that is what 'life' is.".
And Sunako responded like "How life is cruel..."
Then she decided to survive.

I guess this is what the author (Fuyumi Ono) wanted to conclude in Shiki. In my opinion, Fuyumi just depicted Human and Shiki equally and objectively. So both natures are equally cruel and respectful for her. This means there is no good and bad in essentials, and only what we can say here is just only preference, like "Shiki and Human are equally right, but I prefer human".

This philosophy is quite typical in Fuyumi's novels especially during 98-01 like "Shiki", "The Shore at Twilight, The Sky at Daybreak(12 kingdoms)" and "Black shrine's island".
Probably this is the reason why there are some Fuyumi haters ( I mean, she is not our side sometimes). But definitely this is one of the reason why I like her novels :)

Episode 18: They explained that in the scene where Tatsumi confronts Natsuno at his house after we find out he was still alive (and Natsuno's dad stabs Tatsumi at the door). Tatsumi explains what werewolves are, and says they are a very rare subspecies, of which he only knows of four: himself, Sunako, purple-hair freckle girl, and Natsuno. In fact, the nickname "werewolf" was coined by Sunako. He feels that he ought to kill Natsuno but says that Sunako ordered him not to because Natsuno is a werewolf and Sunako doesn't want to unnecessarily kill more of their kind, which is already so rare. This is why in the final scene where Natsuno fights Tatsumi, Tatsumi repeats that "I really should have killed you before, even though Sunako told me not to."

Also, the people who got onto the bus are Natsuno's dad, the roadside restaurant lady, and the fat nurse who escaped from Tohru and Ritsuko. It is definitely not Natsuno's mom, who has blue hair anyway, and was shown to have symptoms of being bitten by a Risen before she vanished so she likely died.

Are you sure about that? If Sunako is a werewolf, why does she go into a deep sleep in the morning, and why does Sunlight affect her? When Muroi put Sunako in the suitcase Tatsumi said to be careful because sunlight could get in and affect her. And by "not killing more of their kind", I think Sunako meant Shiki in general, not specifically werewolves.

And by "not killing more of their kind", I think Sunako meant Shiki in general, not specifically werewolves.

If that's true, then maybe the dialogue in that scene was being ambiguous on purpose. I just rewatched the scene in ep18, and when Tatsumi says he only knows of four, they show pictures of the purple-hair girl and Sunako. True, the wording can be ambiguous enough to imply that Sunako simply made up the term "werewolf", but isn't necessarily the fourth werewolf Tatsumi is referring to. Or maybe this was an unintended misleading portrayal on the anime's part, which might not have been in the manga?

EDIT: Also if it's true that Sunako is just referring to not killing Natsuno because Shiki in general are rare, then they would be pretty hypocritical as near the beginning episodes we find out that all the Shiki obey orders because they are afraid of being "eliminated" if they don't follow Tatsumi. Although this is perfectly possible, that it was just an idle threat to keep the Shiki in order.

Loved watching Megumi get ran over, ahaha.
Muroi and Sunako got away, eh.
I wonder how the rest of the world is going to feel about that giant fire and mass of dead bodies.

According to the original novel, Those dead bodies had been investigated later, but they were just treated as no more than "suspicious death" at the end, and nobody was arrested (But survivors in Sotoba perfectly broke up and many of them were disappeared, if my memory is correct ). But a lot of ppl, especially mas-media , still have great interests and they want to know the truth of this mystery.

I don't think there is a second season. But originally (novel ver), there is one more chapter which explained a post-fin. I haven't read comic but probably it would also explain some similar story. Maybe more story would be added when this anime is released as DVD.

I don't know anything about if Yuki was dead or not after that (he wasn't revived as a warwolf in the novel), but Sunako was depicted as a survivor and she was walking on a street in some big city with Seishin at the end of the final chapter.

I don't remember Sunako saying Shiki were rare. I just watched that part in episode 18 with Tatsumi and Natsuno talking. Tatsumi said, "Personally, I think we should kill you. But Sunako wishes for the number of our kind to grow." They don't mention if there is a great or small number of Shiki, just that she wishes for their to be more. Whether she means Jinrou or Shiki could be unclear, but I'm pretty sure she's just talking about regular Shiki.

GarLogan78 added most of the points I was going to bring up, but I also have this to add:

Episode 21 -
Muroi: May I ask you something?
Tatsumi: What is it?
Muroi: Why do you go this far to serve Sunako? To me, Jinrou appear superior to Shiki.
Tatsumi: Are you saying that Shiki are imperfect Jinrou? If Chizuru were still alive she would've been furious to hear that. I wonder how Sunako would feel if she hears that. It has nothing to do with our relative merit as living beings. It's more of a matter of personal feelings.

If Jinrou appear superior to Muroi, and he's referring to Sunako and Tatsumi's relationship, I think we can safely say she's a Shiki, not a Jinrou.

Random note: I added the spoiler tags to avoid a huge wall of text.

Tatsumi, Natsuno, and girl who was shot by seishiro are definitely (tatsumi says it so many times) Jinrou (shiki who do not have some of the vulnerabilities of regular shiki like going out in the day time or dying in fire. Sunaco is a regular shiki.

I think someone else on here has mentioned Muroi being a werewolf but idk-I don't remember.
