Hi fellow animelovers,
I recently started watching anime movies and i must admit, i like it alot :)
So i started off with some much appreciated ones, often called masterpieces, like Spirited Away and 5 Centimeters Per Second.
Trying to find more of these wonderful movies, i was wondering if you guys could post some anime movies here which you consider to be masterpieces (and maybe add why? =D)

Thanks ^_^

Anyway, Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (The Girl who Lept Through Time) is a good one, so get it off your plan to watch list. As for Ghibli movies, My Neighbor Totoro is my favourite.

Interstella 5555, I wasn't sure what rating to give it honestly because there's nothing else quite like it in the anime world.

I 've seen Perfect Blue,Spirited Away,Princess Mononoke,Ghost in The shell and all of them left a very good impression on me(especially the first 2)
Akira is in my opinion a little overrated but overall worth cheking out..

Any Studio Ghibli film (I really didn't like Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind though, wasn't so good...)

Fullmetal Alchemist: The Conqueror of Shambala was pretty cool too (have to see the series to understand it though...

While there are some great anime feature films, I regard very few as masterpieces. I tend be a little more exclusive with that label because I believe a true masterpiece transcends its medium. In other words, I think an anime masterpiece is something anyone can enjoy even if they don't know what anime is or even care.

A few that come to mind:

Grave of the Fireflies
Perfect Blue
Millennium Actress
Tokyo Godfathers
Summer Wars
The Wings of Honneamise
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

If you liked 5 Centimeters per second then definately watch The Place Promised In Our Early Days and Voices of a Distant Star. They're beautiful.

I'd say Kara no Kyoukai (especially the 5th one) and Summer Wars are my personal masterpieces. Eva 2.22 is close, but I thought they could've handled characterization better.

Cat Soup: Both mentally disturbing, and in the epitome itself. Despite this also having an amazing plot with an underlying story as well.

THese two I totally agree with.

Though Master pieces depends on how you view the movie, story line, voice actor and animation.

You should check out everything Satoshi Kon has made up to this point and the Kara no Kyoukai movies. If you want good examples of movies based on pre-existing anime, I recommend The Cowboy Bebop movie, the Utena movie, and The End of Evangelion.

I would recommend Mamoru Hosoda's films, but I need to see them myself. I want to see The Girl Who Leapt Through Time so badly! >_<

Everyone's recommended everything by Satoshi Kon and Miyazaki. They're right on both accounts. Other than that, Akira, Ninja Scroll, 5 Centimeters per Second, and everything Evangelion.

I think Ninja Scroll is the only thing not already mentioned. Definitely check it out.

I dont want to duplicate any of the movie above but all of them you need to check out. Air the movie is also a masterpiece that most people discredit cause is a movie based on an anime but could stand on its own as a great movie, and it my opinion could stand with movies like Spirited Away, 5cm per second and the Girl that leapt thought time.

Castle in the Sky is my personal favorite Miyazaki film, so that's definately a must if you love his films. The Girl who Leapt Through Time is also amazing. End of Evangelion is fantastic, but you need to see the orignal series to understand, much less enjoy it.
