Question about protection - mostly in romance anime

I think i'm lacking Japanese cultural reference:
In many anime shows, male character says something along the lines of "I'll always protect you" or "I can protect you better than he ever will".
That's totally strange to me - is it common in Japanese culture? Or is it just silly anime melodrama? Or Japanese->English translation is lacking?
I'm talking about Slice-of-Life or School anime here and not ones from "Epic" side.

In an actual romantic context, it's a very intimate promise to always be there for your partner; possibly to the extent of the equivalent of a marriage proposal depending on the scene.

Women like being protected by men

Men like protecting women

Maybe "I'll always protect you" is a mistranslation of "I'll always use protection"?

Better question: Why do chicks in doujin always say "My hips are moving on their own"

Male gender role stereotypes are heavily enforced in anime/manga.

Yes, it's fucking stupid and retarded.

ummm to show that they aren't even trying but their body just wants it so much, a kind of way to show innocence while having them fu*@$ like a pornstar i guess

So, I guess feminism isn't quite a thing in modern Japanese culture? You look at Hollywood nowadays and all the female characters HAVE to be able to kick ass because they don't need no man!!!

I am a supporter of women rights and I have always agreed on the idea of male chivalry but of course when a show goes too far on either sides of the spectrum, it does get silly or worse, irritating.

XD Me too

... As to the answer it is romantic. I know it goes against the feminist ideals but there is something special about the thought of the man you love protecting you. It goes back to our more primal natures..just like how many men love the nurturing aspect of the female side. Why it is just as romantic when the strong protector is curled up with his head on her lap, as he rests while she sings to him and strokes his hair.

This kind of same stuff happens in Spanish novelas as well~
But not nearly as much as in anime
Must be a cultural thing that isn't very prevalent in English stuff.

Its natural for men to protect women although its cliché irl bro.
The world shall know the truth soon.
