| Quality is obviously more important, but popularity is quite relevant as well if we're talking about popularity in Japan. Enjoying an anime which ends on a cliffhanger and then never getting a sequel is kind of annoying. @Ckan they're both shit anyway... |

| OP, the choice is obvious: quality. I couldn't care less how popular a show is when I'm watching it. I know you gave a bit of reasoning as to why you would ask such a question, but I really don't think anyone genuinely cares about popularity over quality in the ah-knee-meh they watch. Does anyone really think that an anime watcher, as they slump comfortably in their recliner and flip on their laptop television, will think to themselves: "Hmm...this show looks really interesting; I know I'm going to love it! ... But it only has 400 downloads on Nyaa! It must not be popular enough...NEXT!" The only time someone may be more concerned about the popularity of an anime over its quality is when they really want to talk with others about it. Obviously, the more people that watch a particular show, the more that are available to talk about it (try finding someone to talk about Tesagure! with as opposed to something like SnK or SAO). Perhaps that explains why so many people here seem to watch shows that they know they don't/won't like just to turn around and complain about how the show was a waste of their time. It's a social phenomenon, really. Like how people drink at parties when they don't drink in the first place just to fit in a little better with the crowd. |

Plenty of older series which have great quality will never receive the same popularity as shit that comes out today simply because it's old. |
