Which is more important to you. An anime's quality or an anime's popularity?

Seems like the answer should obviously be quality but I think a lot of people legitmatly are more interested in the popularity of an anime, even if that has nothing to do with the actual substance of the anime.

I think both of it.
The reason is I could never watch an anime that no one knows because I wouldn't find it.
So the more popular an anime is, if I'm okay with the genre, it don't have an MAL rating of 6.xx, I'm more likely to watch it.

If you watch the popular anime, you can at least talk with people about them.

Who's every going to discuss Brain Powerd and King Gainer with me? ;_;

Quality is obviously more important, but popularity is quite relevant as well if we're talking about popularity in Japan. Enjoying an anime which ends on a cliffhanger and then never getting a sequel is kind of annoying.

@Ckan they're both shit anyway...
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

Quality. Popularity means squat, since my likes will not align with everyone elses. Watching an anime because of popularity is a sure way to be disappointed a good deal of the time, in my experience.

I couldn't care less about the chatter(popularity) so i'm sticking with quality. i'd prefer them to be good then just being well known. precisely why overrated and underrated are words, although their both heavily abused.

Shitting on popular anime is an art form, and it's much more satisfying than praising good but low-profile anime.

OP, the choice is obvious: quality.

I couldn't care less how popular a show is when I'm watching it. I know you gave a bit of reasoning as to why you would ask such a question, but I really don't think anyone genuinely cares about popularity over quality in the ah-knee-meh they watch.

Does anyone really think that an anime watcher, as they slump comfortably in their recliner and flip on their laptop television, will think to themselves: "Hmm...this show looks really interesting; I know I'm going to love it!
...
But it only has 400 downloads on Nyaa! It must not be popular enough...NEXT!"

The only time someone may be more concerned about the popularity of an anime over its quality is when they really want to talk with others about it. Obviously, the more people that watch a particular show, the more that are available to talk about it (try finding someone to talk about Tesagure! with as opposed to something like SnK or SAO).

Perhaps that explains why so many people here seem to watch shows that they know they don't/won't like just to turn around and complain about how the show was a waste of their time. It's a social phenomenon, really. Like how people drink at parties when they don't drink in the first place just to fit in a little better with the crowd.

Why do people care so much whether or not they can chat about a certain anime? Why do people show no interest in anime they don't know about?

and sometimes, popularity don't always match your taste

Because most people who watch anime like to discuss what they liked or did not like about that said anime and with people talking about that anime it eventually becomes popular right?

Quality, With 2000s animes it goes well. But that's why I've got no friends to discuss old forgotten anime except MAL.
For that question is also the phrase : "Millions of flies can't be wrong" XD Some shows can be extremely popular, but who told that they are great?

So people are more interested in the discussion of the anime than the enjoyment gained from watching it?

If I enjoyed watching something, that means I liked it, but doesn't mean it's popular or not.
So my answer would be quality.

In most of the case, when an anime has good quality it means that it should be popular and inversely

That's not entirely true.

Plenty of older series which have great quality will never receive the same popularity as shit that comes out today simply because it's old.

Not really as appeal also factors in. How old it is, what art style, how many genres it used, fan appeal, etc.

This is a retarded thread.

Obviously more people are going to be aware of and open to discussion about popular shows than they are about less popular "quality" shows. Because that's the fucking definition of "popular".
