Iwashiro drew the romance supernatural manga in Weekly Shounen Jump from December 2007 to November 2010. Shueisha published the 16th and final volume in March 2011.

SOW penned a side story light novel with illustrations by Iwashiro under Shueisha's Jump J Books imprint from September 2010 to March 2011.

VIZ Media licensed the manga in English in April 2010 and published the 16th and final volume in May 2014.

Synopsis
Ageha Yoshina is a self-confident high school student who helps others for a fee. On his way back from a job, he finds a strange calling card with the word "Psyren" imprinted left behind in a phone booth and decides to keep it, unaware of its purpose. The very next day, Ageha discovers that his classmate Sakurako Amamiya has the exact same calling card in her possession. When he questions her, Sakurako asks him to save her, signaling the day his troubles begin.

Confused by the circumstances of this encounter, Ageha realizes something is wrong when Sakurako goes missing. In an attempt to figure out what is happening, he decides to call the number provided on the calling card and is asked a series of questions by a mysterious voice, ending with a final, cryptic question: "Would you like to go to Psyren?" Thus begins two teenagers' participation in a game of life or death within a strange world inhabited by monsters called Taboo. Granted the ability to use psychic powers known as PSI, the duo fight to return to the place they call home. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

I just hope they'll put atleast above average production values or else I won't be bothering with this. Satelights recent track record is very mixed with most being below average so not expecting anything.

Ok super hyped about this! I always thought this deserved an anime way more than a lot of other jump stuff from the same decade. I do remember the ending was rushed as it was obviously cancelled short notice as it was/is common practice in the magazine.

It's a miracle. This could've just been one of those manga that never got an anime, but now, it finally gets one. I've read the entire manga too, so this is the first time I've completed a finished manga before it got an anime announcement later on. Glad the anime is in 2D too.

And yeah, the manga was axed, despite having over 100 chapters.

Remakes, 50 millions season for the same anime, digging out almost 20 years manga literally EVERYTHING except animating so many recent stories that waiting to shine even more with anime series or making more seasons for successful anime series. Jesus the industry has become so weird

@RippleLover this has been the winner of the most request manga to get an anime adaption 3 times.

Not only that but look at all the old manga getting adaptations. Ranma 1/2, Yaiba, Bleach. Just because something is old doesn't mean it getting a money adaptation is money grabbing.

The director is Katsumi Ono, so I think we should expect cheap shock factor like children being brutally murdered or women sexually assaulted on screen in the first episode.

It's always cool to see something that ended so long ago get an anime adaptation.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

Take me back to the days before MAL became infested with Twitter's favorite buzzwords.

@komic I can't decide if you have severe problems with your reading comprehension or that you are unable to read between the lines or just came here to waste my time seeing you trolling. Whatever the case is, no.... I didn't call it a remake.

It would have been 15+ years ago, not now. What they do now is milking the people who still remember it by taking advantage of the Japanese studios' new trend of reviving fossils of the industry and censoring them like they did with Ranma and Jigoku Sensei Nube (2025).

The manga wasn't terrible, but just why? Why this of all things? I don't think it ever was a big name, at least anywhere close to the calibre of other fossils getting new adaptations.

@Nanaca well if you looked at the trailer you would see it has won the "Manga we want to see Animated" three times. and was in the top ten multiple years.

@Yubisoft Your response to "This is a fan requested adaptation" was "It would have been 15+ years ago, not now." It was requested by fans in 2024. Nothing too complicated there.

Based on your first message, I had assumed your gripe was that "the industry" is making random adaptations of old things that no one asked for, so I posted something showing that's not the case here. Judging by your response, it seems your complaint is actually that anything old would ever get adapted.

I never said they are picking random things but again this kind of thing choosing super old manga a recent trend and the image you posted is the result of this trend. Of course they don't pick random old manga. At least they pick old manga the people want... that is something I guess but it doesn't make the situation any less sad.

They are 15 years late. If they announced this while the manga were still ongoing in 2009-2010 it probably wouldn't get axed because of the added audience. Unfortunately the manga got most of its cult following after it ended.

Hope it won't be another Hoshi no Samidare (Lucifer and The Biscuit Hammer) case.

Berserk is heavily praised so why are we drawing the line at something tamer
Your logic is dumb and nonsensical of that violence equals bad bs
Not everything is gonna rainbow and sunshines
Murder happens in real life too so are you gonna go on a parade how real life sucks because murders exist
If you're actually a person that can actually discuss things with reasonable arguments you'd explain to me why the violence in this case was done badly , not your stupid "violence equals bad" "argument"

Just establishes some sort of expectation.

But you're calling the director's work is bad only just because it has violence and nothing else
You're dumb for saying such a idiotic take
Talk about how he directs badly to call him bad instead like any reasonable person would like how the production ends up being a mess from an animation perspective or sometimes unfinished
That's what makes a director bad
Not any of the BS you ever said
