Shiori sees Hinako like a fruit ready for harvest soon. Creepy. The main chemistry is still between them and it's kinda cute how Shiori feeds her.

Tbh though, if Shiori looks just like any other girl at school if you didn't know her. Miko also appears but she seems like a comic relief character.

Another entertaining and mysterious episode. I can't wait to see what kind of conclusion the story will get.

I feel sorry for Hinako. She needs a hug. <3

Gotta love Miko's antics. She's such a funny girl.

New pout face to my collection. :P

Another brilliant episode of peak yuri, this was even better than the first.

“Besides the only thing I want to eat is you.” Lesbian love confessions are so extra lol. So from what I’m gathering, Shiori wants to eat Hinako at her absolute tastiest which would be her full of joy, love and happiness and obviously, in love with Shiori. Kinda like a call of the night relationship with the vampires and humans. The good old fashioned irony of Hinako being “killed” when she finally discovers her love of life. Seems like an obvious metaphor to me for Hinako’s old self being devoured and the new version being born.

This yuri love triangle developing.. lol Miko is such a cute bundle of joy. Keeping with the water metaphors, she’s basically Hinako’s life vest that allows her to stay afloat. The way she apologized for asking Hinako to come to the festival with her was so sweet, she didn’t do anything wrong obviously, but she doesn’t want to pressure Hinako or make her feel uncomfortable.

That scene’s a very accurate depiction of depression as well because Hinako does want to go and wants to make her friend happy, but she genuinely just can’t. Physically and mentally, she’s unable to go out and be around people and she feels trapped in her own mind. Depression isn’t just being sad, it has very real physiological effects. On the other hand, Shiori is much more pushy and aggressive and quite literally pulls Hinako out the house to come(works for some people with depression, doesn’t for others) and that’s exactly what Hinako needs right now.

I do feel bad for Miko because if she sees Hinako at the festival with Shiori.. oof, but at the same time this is a great chance for Hinako to go outside of her comfort zone and experience typical young adult happiness, which she needs. Great episode

More info about the Yokai and their preferences. That explains why Shiori keeps Hinako alive for now, partly, it feels like there's another hidden motive behind her action.

Something tells me Miko and Shiori rivalry is going to be very emotional.

The episode doesn’t explicitly explain why the yokai are targeting Hinako, but the hints are there. If my theory is right, her despair might be the very thing attracting them. And that might also explain why Shiori invited Hinako to the festival at the end of the episode. If the next episode and the festival touch on Hinako’s past or her family’s tragedy, it could be Shiori’s way of deepening her emotional despair, making her “taste” even more irresistible.

Regardless of her intentions, Shiori is undeniably Hinako’s savior, for better or worse. Whether she ultimately grants Hinako’s wish to die or helps her rediscover the will to live, Shiori stands at the center of her fate. And that mystery of whether this bond will end in salvation or consumption is what keeps me hooked on this series.

Cannot decide if Shiori is evil, or helpful, at this point. I also get the feeling she knows more about what happened to Hinako's family then she is letting on here.

@Sheol01 I like the idea that she's both. She wants Hinako to be happy and healthy, but for purely selfish reasons. It's an amazing premise.

This combination of pretentious drama and comedic relief is quite endearing, I can't help but love it.

Another beautiful episode ✨❤️

Something tells me that Shiori was the one who saved Hinako when she drowned with her family and now she wants her to enjoy her life not 'cause Shiori wants Hinako to taste good but she might genuinely wants Hinako to find happiness and gain the will to live. That's the kind of vibe I get from Shiori. I maybe wrong.

Or Shiori must not be knowing about Hinako's past and she just really wants to eat her. But through the time they spend together, Shiori might change the way she feels about Hinako and they both can fall in love with each other.

Miko really seems to be nice, caring friend who understands Hinako and her possessiveness over Hinako is so adorable.

This premise is so refreshing. I got easily hooked to this. Can't wait to know how this will end.

And our love triangle is put into place. Hinako attracts a type. We have a red-headed losing heroine (and childhood friend) instead of a blue-haired one. The Summer Shiori Ate has a good story. but unlike "Hikaru" the OP & ED songs leave much to be desired.

So it's not just the physical health, but mental too that she requires of her.
And the moment she reaches the peak of her happiness, she'll be eaten alive. At that point, would she be resentful about it? Or would she be glad that this monster helped her cure all her wounds and make her happy? Even if the end is ugly...

Hmm the monster transferred into the human realm lol. Think offering someone their entire lunch is a bit too kind tbh. Hinako really has a wish to join her departed family huh. The contest between the childhood friend and the newly transferred Yokai is sure gonna be lively. Summer festivals being family themed events would had been things that she would have attended with them after all. If anything Shiori's actions so far have been pretty enigmatic in purpose.

I gotta give my weekly appreciation to the opening song god dam its so fricking good, really feels like they took inspiration from some older horror titles with how it sounds.

To talk about the actual episode I was curious on what kinda logic they would get behind for Shiori not eating Hina immediately. I had seen some people question why Hina don't just kill herself if she's depressed but I mean its extremely obvious especially if you've been under similar mental troubles. She's scared, that's really all their is too it. Dying is scary for most and Hina is scared to do it herself their don't need to be any kinda deeper reason.

And yeah I wondered what logic Shiori would have but they gave a surprisingly logical reason, she basically just wants Hina to be in a more consumable condition, the whole ideology about humans and how they handle livestock actually made perfect sense.

Will be pretty messed up in the end though like eventually Hina finds some form of happiness and gets into a real healthy lifestyle and Shiori just eats her in the end. Cause honestly I'll be surprised if this ends with Shiori and Hina falling in love and just living a normal human life. Cause really right now im treating this anime far more as a horror than a girls love anime I said it before but this anime has 0 girls love vibes behind it so far

I mean they even avoid doing that troupe girls love have were for some reason men just are extinct, like their may not be any main characters but their are still men in this anime. Other than Shiori potentially falling in love with Hina you then have Miko and honestly she has her own sense of mystery behind her. I mean right now Im most interested in her since she's probably the character surrounded in the most mystery. Plus the opening song does kinda portray her in a mysterious vibe.

Like genuinely I'll be surprised if she's just a character for comedic relief, especially since I get the feeling these 3 will be the only major characters for a while

Another amazing episode, definetly the best thing airing this season

Ah, so Hinako’s mental state does play a role in how good she tastes, well what’s a better idea than to hang out with the future devourer at a summer festival lol, really tho if the end goal is Hinako actually getting eaten once she’s regained the will to live, then that will be beautifully messed up, it’s for that reason I don’t see her getting eaten, but hey you never know! I also liked the stuff with Miko in this one, I like her possessiveness of Hinako when it comes to Shiori, it’s cute rn but I wonder if Miko might have more going on or not, I’m hoping so.

I also liked the way Shiori described Hinako being like livestock to her, that painted a perfectly clear picture what she’s doing by protecting Hinako despite planning to eat her. Shiori also mentioned Hinako having a certain smell that others don’t, I’m thinking that might be related to her depression but there are a lot of depressed people out there so maybe it wouldn’t be so rare in that case, idk I’m just throwing stuff out there lol.

"Is it morally acceptable to gaslight a suicidal person to live a happy healthy life if they promise to help kill them one day" is a funny concept. Not ha ha funny, just an odd interpretation of "being a good friend that helps someone work through their mental health crisis". While the yokai mermaid is more than just an analogy - Shiori and her yokai kind that want to eat Hinako do in fact exists - I can't help but further interpret this as a kind lie; a theatrical game where Shiori is just playing at the idea of eating Hinako but actually is protecting her out of love due to some sort of fated encounter they had but Hinako forgot (a la Haku from Spirited Away).

Maybe this is the boring interpretation but it's the one that makes the most sense considering how Shiori is acting. And you can milk an extra layer of tragedy/irony out of this encounter being related to the day of "the accident" that Hinako is currently suffering from. It's also just an odd thing to be so casual about. Hinako's lack of reaction is endemic of her depressed state of mind but I can accept it as her not thinking through things clearly like "would being eaten be the most preferable way to commit suicide"? I think that's too gnarly even for a suicidal teen. I dunno, maybe she thinks its a metal way to die?

The mood swings for super serious melodrama to cute whimsy to appears to belie the stories true aim. An odd start but who knows... It could have the makings of something sweet.

Depression surrounds Hinako, but the lively festival looms outside...

A pretty decent followup episode, and I still find Shiori and Hinako's relationship to be unsettling, but interesting. I do wonder why the yokai are targeting Hinako, including Shiori herself. Let's say if the yokai feed off Hinako's despair, then why would Shiori need Hinako to be more happy to be more "delicious"? Again, really like how Hinako's depression is being handled, with the water flowing around her like she's about to drown, and Shiori's hand reached out at the last second to pull her out of the depths of despair. I guess we shall see if the festival can bring some joy to Hinako's life, or any change whatsoever.

The animation is pretty average asides from the three girls. But what elevates this anime is the soundtrack and Hinako's stream of consciousness which often waxes poetic.

It is rather diabolical of Shiori. All Hinako wants to do is die. But until she rediscovers a zest for life I don't think Shiori will grant her wish. I feel that at the point when she is the happiest is when Shiori will strike.

I don’t get why there isn’t a farming tag on mal just for this. Hinako is simply a farm animal to Shiori and any perceived relationship is irrelevant. I hope Shiori knows some good recipes and doesn’t just make stew or curry.

So at the moment Shiori is playing the role of It, though her seasoning of choice is happiness instead of fear.

Mermaids in folklore aren't always benevolent so the motivation could definitely be played straight, but there's some odd vibes to it that make me wonder if she doesn't know more than she lets on and has a different goal entirely.

This anime is morbid, and depressing. It's ironic that one of the shinning lights of hope here is the monster. But, wouldn't that mean that the happier Hinako becomes, the earlier she will be eaten? If that's what she wants then she should get happy sooner.

I'm not sure if Shiori will actually try eating Hinako later on but for now she wants her to enjoy life and go out rather than being cooped up at home, and it's because of Shiori helping Hinako out that I wonder if she will really eat her, we'll see. Also, if Miko sees both of them at the festival, which I think is highly likely, sparks may fly between her and Shiori, perhaps that conflict will drive Hinako to plan more outings which should help with reducing her depression.

@deltahalo241 Couldn't agree more. Definitely frontrunner alongside Towa No Yuugure for me. Will see how it goes!

As for this ep, the soundtrack is still incredible, as is the voice acting. Ai Fairouz is such a good choice for Miko and her energy is such a contrast to the rest of the cast. Makes her stand out a lot as a character. The jumps between the dark/moody moments and the humourous ones is really something. I'm currently really enjoying that aspect of the show.

It's hard to hold back on reading the manga for this, but as soon as it was announced, I knew I wanted to enjoy it as anime first. So far, so good.

I would put Shiori at the moment in the monster section. She is only helpful to Hinako trying to improve her mental health to increase her taste. The minute Hinako doesn't want to die and live instead might be the time Shiori decides to enjoy her meal.
