I’ve been wondering this lately ever since I started using MyAnimeList, I feel like I’ve become more focused on numbers than actual enjoyment. I’ll catch myself thinking things like “is this an 8 or a 9?” halfway through an episode instead of just watching it. Or I’ll avoid certain shows because their average score is too low, even though I might’ve liked them if I went in blind. Has anyone else felt like using MAL made anime feel more like a checklist than a hobby? Or do you think it actually enhances your experience?

Lol, I don't follow what people say, or I would watch all the top rated shows and rate them a 10/10 or the normal average which is like 6-7/10. At the end of the day you will recieved flame for anything you rate, rate anime what you like, dont avoide series due to people saying they are bad, so many series which are low rated on my list we are talking like 2,3,4/10's are the ones which I can still take one thing from and enjoy a part of them.

Nah. I love doing numeric shit, lists, tier lists and everything related to that. It has actually drastically improved my anime experience, but that could be the case only for me.

Dragevard said: I had a bad habit of starting stuff, and never finishing it before I got on MAL. My list actually isn't totally accurate because there would be like 30-50+ additional shows on hold, and I just decided not to add those if I didn't plan on watching them again, or those like Inuyasha which I did watch a lot of, I just threw back on PTW. Or do you think it actually enhances your experience? MAL is pretty useful for motivating me to finish things, which is a good thing in my mind, since I get to see the end off any works, that are often quite good. That said yeah, I mean if you just focus on checking out the next thing etc, it can feel very consumerish.....so I try to avoid doing that, and focus more on what makes me happy, at least with this medium. I am trying to focus more on re-watches, for instance. I am honestly pretty okay with where my list is at. |

Using MAL has certainly changed my experience watching anime, but not for the worse. I'm not focussed on numbers at all btw. What changed however, is that now it's far too easy to search for an anime I had to put effort into searching before I knew about MAL. My experience is overall better now than it was before, but ngl, I do miss the times I used to find an anime by complete accident and from coming across random memes. Now I always "know" what I want to watch.

Nahh, I never really care about the average score. It's somewhat helpful, but a lower score doesn’t make me any less interested in watching an anime. I like to consider that my taste is very different from most people’s, that way I might be in the minority who enjoy a certain show. For example, the majority might rate an anime a 6 or 7, but I might give it a 9 or 10. With that mindset, I just watch the anime myself, if I like it, I keep watching it. When I do look at scores, I usually prefer checking the Score Stats to see how many people rated it what, since as it sounds the average score is just average, it represents the average anime watcher, but I'm not average. And when it comes to judging popularity, I personally look at the number of members. If an anime have a lot of members, I consider it is or was pretty popular in the past and worth watching. I also like to look at Dragevard said: Or do you think it actually enhances your experience? Honestly, I think it enhances the experience for me. Because when an anime has a low average score, but I end up loving it, it gives me this weird feeling that my taste is a bit uniquer than an average person.

No, rating anime helps me have a better understanding of my taste and I don't avoid anime rated low because: 1) low score usually means below average animation, it's not about the writing 2) low score but positive score progression is actually a sign of positive reception of a niche anime. I fear your brain is irredeemably fried.

I got to that point a few years ago, when I decided to just stop keeping up with all the buzz. Nowadays I just watch what I think I'm going to enjoy and if a few episodes in I'm not hooked, I drop the show without second thoughts, even if that means I'm gonna finish just one anime in a whole year. Regarding the rating, at one point I was so obsessed that it became a burden, so I stopped rating shows. Now I only think about that only after I finish watching the show, so I get to actually enjoy what I'm seeing instead of overanalysing every little detail. My point is, MAL can be both good and bad, but it depends entirely on how you use it. For me, I'd say it has been mostly good, as I can track what I watched and I also found a lot of good anime through the top list, recommendations or forum discussions.

Not sure about the scoring/rating stuff but, I did start paying attention to the amount of Anime I watch per season ever since I joined MAL. Not to mention, I became a seasonal watcher, despite mostly only picking retros or completed shows prior to it. With that being said, I don't consider it as 'less Anime enjoyment' but simply more on being in a different phase. I do appreciate being introduced to the Seasonal watching, and being able to discuss Anime as I watch it, as opposed to enjoying it all on my own when I wasn't on MAL yet.

Maybe both, but probably on the "enjoying more" side. I get to enjoy so many more awesome anime that I discovered through MAL, but at the same time, my standards have risen a lot after watching a lot of anime. Meaning, more anime that I enjoyed, and more anime that I didn't enjoy, at the same time. Maybe it's true that I have now focused on numbers more, but still not more than my overall enjoyment. I do like numbers and statistical stuff anyway.

@XzaR if course, it's just natural process, the more you watch - the more you have experience and it more and more harder to impress you. Plus quantity of great/good anime isn't unlimited too.

Not at all. I mostly use this site to keep track of where I am in an anime or manga. I put the ratings when I'm far into a series or just finished one. I rate based on how much I enjoyed whatever I was reading or watching.

If anything my experience with MAL reinforces that some shit just never changes in the community. Which is good, and bad. I use the site mainly because I like to write reviews. I got used to doing it over at CR before Sony <BOO! HISS!> killed that community. I found it helped me realize what it really was I was looking for out of the media. I stopped throwing mud at the wall to see what stuck. It's was to the point where it was a waste of time, watching a couple episodes, to drop something I'd already seen a million times in a million different eras. It was said by wiser heads than mine, there is nothing new under the sun. Reviewing for my own benefit helps reinforce that. I know how likely I am to be interested in something or not. I do get a kick out of looking at how series get rated around here, though. Always a good belly laugh.

@Nysse same here!!! At some point, i was wondering how far i have actually come in this anime world. i recently just started keeping tabs - it helps me remember, that "Oh, i have already watched this one", especially for animes i happen to forget the plot because it was mid. An example is, i have watched Chrono Crusade before like 3 years back, but i didnt quite remember at all. i redownloaded it recently and was like, havent i watched this before? it was all just too familiar to me though i couldnt recall what happened in the anime. Then i never knew MAL existed. So, i'm glad i found MAL. And these days, i dont update it manually, i synced it to my system and crunchyroll, and other sites using extensions, so as i am watching, it just updates, haha. Its been fun knowing about MAL.

All these ratings don't move me. Cuz i choose my animes off MAL. i select them as each season is coming out. for the old time animes, i scrutinize them well before i watch, you can say i judge the animes by their cover. Or more like, i have a taste for choosing what suits me best. If i see an anime i like, i look around for other like it and watch till i am tired, so me coming back to MAL is just to drop my ratings for whatever i saw, so that in case i=the anime was mid, and i forget about it, i can just return to MAL and check if i have actually watched it. It fun hahhahaha Don't let the ratings faze you, yeah some are good ratings, while some aren't. Thats just it. It depends on what genre you actually like.

| I enjoy the same as before. I do feel I've become more critical, but that's a consequence of watching so many anime. Before MAL, I used an Excel sheet to do exactly what I am doing in MAL (including the rating system 1-10). | Yeah actually I have experienced the same. It made me more meticulous on the rating, that sometimes my enjoyment of the anime doesn't coincide with the "rating" it might deserve in my mind. I also at times catch myself thinking 'what would I rate this', instead of just enjoying the anime as a whole. But it helps me to better understand and share what I felt about a certain anime in a articulate and metrical matter (Not that Im very articulate or my rating makes sense even to me lol). But is still helps |
