I think learning about culture fests and sports fests were probably the most interesting thing i've learned about and i always look forward to episodes with them

My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

I learned that Japanese like baseball a lot, they are very polite and use honorifics all the time, nobunaga is always the main historical villain for some reason, the country is high tech and forward thinking but also very traditional and conservative, they eat a lot of rice and fish and noodles and pork, they are a mix of buddhist and shintoist with other smaller religions, they have an extreme work and school ethic. They value social uniformity, duty, honor, loyalty & family.

Ah, a lot of things I suppose?

• Teenagers almost always live by themselves.
• The ecchi wind can strike anywhere, even indoors.
• Boys are born with a six pack apparently, or gain all their mass from just lifting a few everyday objects once or twice.
• Panties are edible.
• School kids run to School with bread in their mouths.

Japanese people who have kids tend to die a lot. if they don't, they often need to travel abroad for work. I guess that explains the low birth rate.

  • They bow twice and clap twice before praying at the shrine.
  • They always say "thanks for the food" before eating (I love this one).
  • They always refer others by their last name unless they're close.
  • Christmas is apparently the most romantic time of the year.
  • Their omelettes are sweet (the ones in my country aren't).

Nobunaga is one of the most important historical figure in Japan known for "Unification of Japan". He depicted in all manners including as a waifu

I learned about the dish okinomiyaki. It's technically fast food in Japan but it's pretty unique for being called that. Probably one of my favorite dishes to make from that territory.

@Retro8bit I love it. Hiroshima-style for me.

I suppose the most surprising thing I learnt was that on school trips teachers will join the pupils (of the same sex) in the onsen. Indeed I separately discovered that the last mixed-sex onsen to be used by a school was closed not that long ago in the 90's partly due to the rise of digital cameras.

I can't imagine the mayhem that would result in a pool full of naked male and female teenagers in the UK.

The Japanese should bring mixed school-onsens back, IMO, and fix the falling population problem.

@Otakupervert890 if you're judging an entire country or culture based on television shows that is a huge misguided mistake ...its a huge fallacy, if u want to learn about & experience a cultures everyday life then go visit the country to find out for yourself at street level.

I assume since this is animation we're talking about, a lot of things are exaggerated to some extent, but one thing that always stood out to me was the indirect kiss thing. I've done things like share drinks directly out of the same bottle before, pre covid , and I never had the thought that I was indirectly making out with the other person. And I don't want to have that thought; one, because some of those were family members and two, in hindsight sharing the same drink is gross enough without the thought that I'm kissing someone I'd rather not kiss.

@tchitchouan Youll be surprised at just how little of that is true.

Baseball is the most popular sport. Honourifics are used most of the time, but polite is a bit... of a misunderstanding.

Nobunaga as a villain isn't really true, but he was heavily villainised by the guy that usurped him (surprise surprise).

It isn't high tech - some companies produce "new" tech (not necessarily high tech) but most of Japan is actually backward compared to the West. "Ohh fancy toilets!" yet everyone still uses fax machines, endless unnecessarily paper documents are the norm, cashless is still spotty and other technologically backward aspects are mostly forwarded by the ageing population and the fact that most companies and government officials are elderly men with no desire to change. It's not traditionalism that holds Japan back - it's "old person hates change".

Rice, fish, noodles, pork - that's about half the food groups right there. They also eat lots of chicken and veg. The only thing missing, really, is beef. Which is still common here, just less so due to expense more than anything else.

Most Japanese people are atheist, not buddhist. Basically nobody is shintoist. You'll find more Christians than either, really. Many atheists will identify as Buddhist in censuses, but even that's got its own reasons.

The work ethic isn't a work ethic - it's "fear of being shamed". They don't work hard because they want to overwork themselves. It's because not doing so will look bad for them.

This ties into social uniformity - people do it out of fear of ostracisation, but most people wish they could be more individual. Honour isn't really a concept here, nor loyalty and family. In fact, cheating is ridiculously common here - and it's mostly the women doing it.

I even hear about Japanese history though anime a lot of times, like, I first learned about Oda Nobunaga through Drifters.

Before i got into anime i didn't know the first thing about Japan except that it's called the land of the rising sun and that it has a red circle on its flag
The most fascinating thing to me is probably the depiction of different eras like Meiji or Edo

@Lucifrost It isn't necessarily less shameful, it's just that you can easily be seen to be "working less" or "a lazy worker" while cheating is usually hidden.

Hard to say really, watched a metric crap ton of Japanese live action stuff before I got in to anime. I’m sure the tropes of running to school with toast in mouth and learning the most vicious killer in Japan is Truck-kun would be the stand outs.
