Why would these main pokemons want a boring MC like this? Delicious food? Just let her die or eat her in the first episode... you dumb Hagmon.

@KingYoshi watched the scene again and I guess I mistook the big tail looking thing for being the sea yokai she was attacking. kinda hard to tell what was going on in that shot. And doesn't really make me any more interested tbh.

Uh... you do know you don’t actually need her permission for that, right? If you really wanted to die, you could just... well, you know. And yeah, I get that when you’re depressed it’s incredibly hard to look beyond yourself. But I still hope one day you’ll be able to look up and see that there’s someone who truly cares about you, someone who’d be devastated if you just gave up on living. And okay, I’m just going to assume by “want to eat her” she means ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Still, it’s hard to find reasons to live when you’ve lost your entire family so young and are left alone in this cruel world. I just hope her mindset changes as the story goes on. Honestly, I’m expecting a 180 plot twist at the end, I’ve got a bad feeling this might either dive into heavy drama or end with the monster abandoning her. Either way, if it wasn’t obvious already, yeah... this one definitely has yuri vibes. Starts off grim, with main girl here losing both parents and openly longing for death.

Seems like this might be a more depressing, emotionally heavy story and honestly I’m here for it. I’m really curious to see where it goes.

@IzanaSolos where i watched that line was translated as 'she might help me die' which i think conveys her feelings much better. i don't think she's talking about permission but as shiori doing her a favor (kindly killing her)

love the detail in Hinako's eyes and how they made the water\depression connection. She seems to be disassociating for most of the episode and they left the last line with such a good delivery

The premise is interesting so far, and the atmosphere with the background soundtrack is pretty good, im looking forward to seeing where the story could go with the protagonist being actively suicidal and how that affects her relationship with shiori the mermaid.

My first impression was really about the atmosphere, especially the underwater scenery in her mind was mesmerising.
Overall simply beautiful, characters, scenery and all. Looking forward to following it through the season.

a bit cliche introduction, i was expecting it to have gone deeper and disturbing but still okay so far, just curious why the author decided to give the protagonist a caring (and comedic) friend, imo kinda ruined the mood and theme of "I've got nothing anymore, just let me die", but maybe it was just me mistakenly expecting something else

Poor Hinako is clearly suffering from survivors guilt over whatever accident took her family... I'm excited to see her regain will to live. I feel like it will take a few near death experiences to get there, now that there's this scary pretty mermaid waiting to devour her... but all in all I don't feel like it's going to be an all doom and gloom kind of story? And Miko-chan seems to lighten the mood a lot. I'm gonna keep watching, curious to see what happens next

EDIT: The opening song is so addictive, that melody really gets across this sense of urgency and desperation

First of all, the op and ed are amazing! Second, always happy to see yuri anime with a darker tone!

The pacing of first episode seems a bit slow, but I heard from other fans that the pacing will get faster later on. I really look forward to seeing how the romance is developed, how Hinako deals with depression, as well as more fight scenes from Shiori.

At first, I was hesitant about whether or not to watch this anime. The trailers and promotional images gave the impression that it was going to be a very dark and tragic anime, one of those that want to make you cry, and I'm not really into that. But after watching the first episode, I liked what I saw. Then I watched it again a couple of hours later and liked it even more. And after seeing the comments from other people who watched the episode, mentioning details that I hadn't noticed, I had to watch it a third time, and I loved it. Now I'm really excited to see the other episodes. Now I want to mention what for me was the highlight of the show.

Visuals: It's beautiful. The animation, the colors, the background, the character design—everything looks incredible. So much so that I can only describe this anime in two ways: Terrifyingly beautiful or Beautifully terrifying.

Characters:
Hinako: Poor girl, she's quite depressed, and it hurt me to see her in that state. I hope that as the story progresses, Hinako can overcome her depression and be happy (yes, I know it's not easy to overcome depression, especially one as severe as Hinako's, but still).

Shiori: My first impression of her? SHE'S BEAUTIFUL!!! And terrifying. That scene when she takes out her scales and long nails (Gosh!) and then destroys that yokai was AWESOME, and I would love to see what her full mermaid form looks like. Definitely a 10/10 character.

Miko: I only have one thing to say about her: PLEASE DON'T LET ANYTHING BAD HAPPEN TO HER, PLEASE DON'T LET ANYTHING BAD HAPPEN TO HER! I don't think I can stand seeing another of my favorite characters die horribly twice in the same year, since I think she's going to be the one who pulls Hinako out of her depression and gives her back her will to live (although with Shiori involved, it'll be difficult). As I said, I hope nothing bad happens to Miko, since I adore this silly and cheerful girl.

And finally, the opening, ending, and voice actors are EXCELLENT. Reina Ueda, Yui Ishikawa, and Ai Fairouz performed incredibly well.

Definitely a Great First Episode if it continues like this until the end it could be the best anime of the season and one of the best of the year.

Having read the manga, I was initially concerned about how the anime would handle the emotional depth of the characters. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The adaptation did an outstanding job, and the way it wove the analogy between the protagonist's feelings and the ocean was truly emotional.

I have not read manga/LN this is adapted from, but… Miko is definitely also a yokai, right? And she's doing the same thing Oumi's doing: protecting Hinako until she's al dente? I feel like it's very obvious, and they're not trying to hide it—or if they are, they're doing a poor job of it. Her weak constitution is probably related to her true nature. But that's just a theory, a yokai theory.

Otherwise, I thought this series premiere was very good. I love the visuals. They're very sleek and simple. The vibrant color of the sea is beautiful!

The music is absolutely gorgeous! I especially love the piece they use for the eerie scenes.

Been waiting this adaptation and did not disappoint a single bit, is perfect the way the animation could be so much detailed. Not only that, the colours, the music, the ambience and the dialogues (voices included) were all so good and beautifully set that it was like watching an ideal show, but entertaining and intriguing (even when I already read the manga).
Looking forward to this show and the upcoming chapters.

Muri Muri has ended but new yuri anime has begun - yuri should be eternal.

This is a great anime.
Its just first episode and im already really like it.

I know this is a famous yuri manga, but i havent read it so this is my first time seeing the story.

First of all, i like calm atmosphere of this anime; those moments with the sound of the ocean are beautiful.

Second, i like the characters: the main heroine is quiet and suicidal, her gyaru genki friend, the most energetic in the entire series, and ofc cute and cool mermaid with eyes the color of sea (btw she has a cute little fang, waifu immediately).

This anime has a supernatural theme, so i suppose there will be are all sorts of monsters that mermaid will kill to protect her future wife food.
Even though she says she is going to eat the main heroine...
Eat...
(Nooo, i should not make dirty yuri jokes)

The visuals are very good and beautiful, i like the way the ocean moments and sounds of ocean, the music is excellent, opening and ending themes are good.

So after the first episode i have absolutely nothing to complain about, its perfect.

I hope it stays that way.

We've gone from a supernatural BL anime to a supernatural Yuri anime.

The art direction, the soundtrack, the voice actresses, the OP and ED... everything is crafted with impressive quality.

Beyond the supernatural elements and the soundtrack, what really captivated me was the emotional depth of the anime, especially its message about suicide. Hinako's desire to die could change, or perhaps meet Shiori, with her obsessive need to protect Hinako, to ultimately kill and consume her.

A more than intriguing and gripping beginning.

seeing the reactions, glad im not alone in disliking this basic premise. the animation and art style is mid at best, it denounces any visual style to understand the melancholy and deep seriousness of what the main character is going through, just slap a very generic anime filter that it's known for.

i gotta say suicide aversion and the permission of your death from another is unserious af. she's not depressed enough to do it on her own, people like that are still hopeful and that's probably the end goal for this series. The premise is yet another dramatic shock factor to prolong it for "plot reasons". hopefully they can bullshit their way out of keeping her alive for 13 episodes

hope this isn't yuribait and we start seeing actual development.

This was a wonderful premiere, especially for a small and rather unknown studio. I liked the way it portrayed her disassociation and depression. It was heavy and palpable. The voice actresses were fantastic. Can't wait to see more!

Love the manga so pretty sad to see so many negative reactions, they shouldn’t have given a manga as visually stunning as Watatabe to an inexperienced studio with generic directing style. All the scenes that were good in this were due to the visual direction of the manga. This style of anime is fine for a generic isekai but for a story like Watatabe fuck no. Animation sucks as well.

Voice acting and OST were amazing.
