One of the most popular anime of this season is "Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku" or "The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity".

A short excerpt of the plot is as follows: "One day at work, Rintarou sees a customer at a table, but she runs off before he can talk to her. The next day, he receives an apology from the girl, Kaoruko Waguri, who explains that she did not run away because of his appearance and that she believes Rintarou is a kind-hearted person. Although he is not used to Kaoruko's bright personality, Rintarou looks forward to forming a friendship with her. There is just one obstacle that stands in his way: Kaoruko is a Kikyo student!"

It is ranked the 48th best anime of all time as of August 8th, 2025.

I have always been wondering for a few years why is romance anime so popular? I don't watch romance, but please explain why this appeals to many people

Are romance anime shows realistic depictions of romance? Or are they completely detached from reality? I would like to know.

Because romance and sex are some of the most basic human needs. Likewise, anime about violence or entertainment always attracts a lot of viewers. Another issue is that, as we know thanks to shipping and fanservice, people often try to turn even quite chaste shows into this, which were not intended to excite the viewer or tell about the romantic relationships between the characters. There is even a list of authors who deliberately avoid romance in their titles, believing that it would either devalue the platonic themes in their manga or distract the reader from other plot topics. For example, Oda, Miyazaki, Ayano, and the author of Natsume are against it.

I have no idea, there are like 4 billion women/men in the world. If you want vanilla romance or sex, just go and have it IRL, it shouldn't be much harder than buying groceries.

Because romance anime are relatively easy to watch, especially if it's pure and wholesome whenever I want a dose of diabetes.

It's a shame we don't get to have many romance stories that are simple but feel amazing...

@DesuMaiden Nothing's wrong with it, in fact there's a show that has healthy sexual scenes and it's called "I Have a Crush at Work". FYI, it's the most mature workplace romance I've watched.

The human mind (including fictional characters) is so fascinating to analyze or dissect.

I guess it’s because most people consume anime, shows, books, and movies to feel emotions, and romance is one of the genres where emotions are most present. Plus, it’s easy to self-insert, project yourself, or at least relate to the characters.

Next question will be why we buy food or something like that..

Atleast it should get more popularity the teenagers/mam child shouting hype genre..

I tend not to watch romance manga and anime. I enjoy the Mahou Shoujo anime the most. Like Sailor Moon and Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Those shows contain romantic elements, however. It is not overly dramatic romance for the most part.

I'm a romance junkie, I love me some good lovey dovey type shit. We go through a roller coaster of emotions - the yearning, the uncertainty, the self-doubt - until we get to the payoff in the end. it makes me feel good.

Now I'm not sure why "Kaoru Hana" in particular is so popular. As an anime-only it seems like a pretty standard "Romeo & Juliet" type story so far but we'll see. But the beautiful art and animation from CloverWorks certainly doesn't hurt.

You can ask that question about anything. Why does horror appeal to people? Why does fantasy appeal to people? Why does action appeal to people? Why does sports appeal to people? So on and so forth. Even down to themes. Why do people like historical works? Why do people like delinquents? Why do people like psychological themes? So on.

It's simply what they like.

God created Man. It was not good for the man to be alone, so God created for him a wife. Men and women are supposed to be together. It is a longing we all want to see fulfilled. This longing has been magnified in our modern era, where the atomization of society (eg, you don't even know the name or your next door neighbor, maybe don't even speak the same language as them. Constantly moving every few years in search of work. etc) means that people aren't finding each other, and the skyrocketing cost of living means that people can't afford to get married until their 30s, if that. So people are alone, and they live vicariously through entertainment.

What is not to like in watching 2 cute individuals struggling to comprehend and accept each other and themselves, all while environment around them offers challenges that they work together to overcome.

Romance is always the most popular genre be it in anime or not. Most people are love-brained, they talk as if love/romance is everything in their life, they yearned for it. Romance/love story/someone's love life is always a common topic to talk about, people really take interest in it be it IRL or fiction.

Humans are romantic creatures - romance is one of the 2 ancestral genres, other than heroic epics, humans developed once humans created story-telling, and is definitely the first ancestral genre for women. There is no appeal to explain, is simply something humans are naturally interested in, the same as listening to music, food, or sex.

It's a genre that at least on the surface is easy to relate to given majority of people are going to have experienced romantic connection or at least have longed for such. Of course there are a whole slew of others reasons too, emotional intensity, indulging in the fantasy, wish fulfillment etc. Of course some of these are also the same reason others dislike it *shrugs*.
