Why are earrings socially accepted but nose rings frowned upon?

I mean, I see no logical reason other than that it is a cultural thing. I’ve seen quite a few people dismiss nose rings as something only cows should have, but if any of them actually set foot on a farm, they would have said that about earrings too.

What do you think yourself? If you find nose rings ugly but are totally fine with earrings, why do you think that is?

That's a good question, I've always found the prejudice against piercings strange.

Yes, I find nose rings to be ugly and earrings not to be. A quick reason to be personally not receptive to nose rings. Don't nose rings tend to be very noticeable?

I wouldn't get a septum (nose ring) for myself, but I don't mind it on other people (especially because my partner has one, it would be strange for me to hate that haha)

Honestly I don't look down on any kind of piercing (unless maybe Prince Alberts and stuff like that, yeouch)

@Absurdo_N Sadly I wouldn't say it's strange, prejudice always happens with anything that is even slightly out of the norm. It's still quite easy to even find people who are prejudiced against tattoos.

Some can be, some aren't. Just like with earrings.

There are still older people who are prejudiced against ambidextrous and left-handed people in my country;_; maybe in the rest of the world there are people like that too.

Prejudices are so silly;_;

It used to be like that where I live, when religion had a stronger hold on education. My dad is left-handed, and he received quite a few slaps on his left hand with a ruler from his teacher (who happened to be a nun).

Nose rings did look odd to me before, but since I met my best friend who has one, not that much anymore lol. I'm not very fond od them tbh but neither that much against either.
Also wouldn't get one myself, too painful and a hassle (I'm considering an eyebrow one tho)

But yeah it's cultural, both men and women have had facial jewelry, tattoos and make-up across continents since the dawn of time.

Probably a combination of them being more "in your face" compared to earrings and how they actually look (my aunt has one through the middle part of her nose and I've overheard my mother saying she looks like a bull several times)
I'm either crashing out or fujoing out.

If it's done in correct way [not too much] than it is just an accessory which make you differ from the others, that's it.

If there would be 0 logics for such fashion it wouldn't last till nowadays from ancient times x)

@fleurbleue yeah, it's about cows, and not the aesthetics of it! Great question! No men care about aesthetics! NOT AT ALL. They care more about what they'd say if they... lived on a farm. That's the first thing I think of when deciding if someone is attractive or not, Farmer Joe, is she hot or does she remind you of any farm animals??

"Well boy... now let me tell you something..."

Earrings are classy traditional jewelry worn by elegant upper class women.
Nose rings are a sign that your entirely personality is about your trauma.

Well, thank you for pointing out that men shouldn’t base their views on the aesthetics of nose rings by associating them with farm animals. 🤗

My best guess is that it's because earrings are attached to a flap of skin that serves no other purpose.

Nice cows. It is very anti functional. Earlobes are not wet tissue, the same is hard to say about nose. Septum rings get in the way of sneezing, breathing, cleaning, and if it is like what it does in cows, sucking milk. Not a fan of most earrings and earcuffs too.

Cultural thing. Personally I like piercings, a lot. But I wouldn't get a nose ring myself as it's not my style. But a stud piercing on my nose would be fine.

Also piercings on the face are more visible so the stigma for them is understandable. As looking different is frowned upon. And the ears are less visible most of the time especially if you have longer hair

Whatever is more common. In Japan the majority of women are not pierced so I heard they have a less positive view of ear piercing than elsewhere where it is the norm. Same would apply to nose piercings where only ear piercings are the norm.

Because nose rings are at the front, which looks too prominent for most people, whereas ear rings are at the side, which looks more decent.

Kinda similar to face tattoo vs arm tattoo.

@JaniSIr I don't think anyone needs to be an expert to know such a thing. Am I also a tattoo expert if I know about the Maori traditional tattoos?

Anyway, since you said you don't know anyone from Nepal, I take it your actual opinions on nose rings are based on people you actually know?

@fleurbleue I would say yes for I didn't even know they had tattoos.

The nose ring theory has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt in the West, all that's remaining is investigating if it holds in Nepal too.

That's pretty much a thing for a lot Polynesian tribes, though. Are all the kids who watched Moana tattoo experts?

Pretty sure JanSIr is an it bro who lowkey hates women with blue hair. I certainly don’t agree with the aesthetic, but I am not going to make stereotyped assumptions of people over it. Stop trying to blame unseen trauma when women dye their hair black or do not shave their armpits. You are acting like an incel.

Just let people have bad taste.

Haha, good point (but be honest, if people wore tags like this, you'd get the same reaction). Nose rings were worn by the Israelites, so I'm not sure why it's become such a fuss these days, but it's true that I find most of them ugly. However, it's not like I care for all ear piercings either. Something simple in the lobe? Cool. A two inch gauge? Yuck! I think part of why I hate septums is because I know how unbearable it would be for me with all the junk that ends up in my nose. But hey, at least it's not a tongue ring. -shudders-
