Damn, I felt bad for Gaku here. It looks like career path changed in just one episode.

On another note, this episode sets his life path onto something more. Besides Gaku, Kai might be the most important character from their chance encounter. There's food gimmicks in this but this seems far more than the usual slice of life type of show. There's good amount of potential storytellnig and character building for Gaku.

Mangaka Yugo Kobayashi is back with his 2nd anime adaptation after the impressive sports series of Ao Ashi, switching up to cooking. And with the TV live-action drama having some success, the anime there is too for yet another potential.

Oshikikeigo's OP has got quite the charm, though it's just PNG layering with some visual flare.

The boy who was once seen as a mathematics genius, who shut himself out at the very last minute, Gaku Kitada sure has a lot of shoes to fill, and can only fall back to his cooking at Wels Academy, unlike Ayu Uomi, who has a sports college recommendation, and can enjoy his freshly-made sphagetti Napolitan. However, that captures the attention of someone who just comes and goes after tasting his food, and while that is good and all, the Maths Olympiad competition increasingly becomes quite the pressure that he could not overcome. Instead, the same person coming back, who already has a catering business of his own, decides to take Gaku on his word for his cooking instead, the 23-year-old cooking prodigy of Kai Asakura sees a future of food with him.

The irony, however, is with Gaku's explusion from the Chairman's Board and the scholarship money wasted all away, the school principal of Chairmon Saimon sees no point in getting back at Gaku by forcing him to return all that money. In retaliation, Kai adding in the Napolitan to the menu, which looks alone is an insult to powerful dignaries, he certainly can promise that the food will meet their high standards. The problem, however, is with Gaku's self-loathing that he's a nobody, Kai forces him to remake his Napolitan again, though with methods that utilize his mathematician skills to the test.

All's about to be revealed with the guests's tasting of Gaku's Napolitan.

DXTEEN's ED is alright though..everything's off to a decent start.

Gaku, a high school student aspiring to become a mathematician, experienced failure in the Math Olympics and gave up on that path. After losing his passion for mathematics, Gaku met a talented young chef, Kai Asakura, through the napolitan he made as a free meal at his workplace.

On the other hand, the chairman of the foundation, feeling insulted by Gaku's refusal to participate in the math contest, demanded that he withdraw and immediately repay his scholarship. Trapped in a difficult situation, Gaku was faced with a "certain choice" by Kai, who had been invited as a chef for dinner by the chairman.

In reality, there was nothing wrong with Gaku’s cooking; he included napolitan, onions, and tomatoes. But for some reason, the flavor of the napolitan he made was different. Cooking could even be approached through mathematical principles.

Napolitan with ice cubes placed in the freezer? I don’t quite understand Gaku’s cooking methods, but this is beyond logic. I can’t wait to see the results of Gaku’s cooking.

Oh F, that principal, he didn't care about anything related to education or his students. All he cared about was his money and himself.

Back in 2018, when I first heard about manga that combine cuisine with mathematic I thought it's a nice concept but it's not gonna work in a long term since mathematic doesn't play a big role in cuisine, scientific branches like chemistry, biology, or even physics might be able to convince me more than mathematic which I consider too pure to be applied in food.

Turns out that not only the manga is still continue 7 years later, it also get adapted into anime. So I've to admit that it's doing better than I expect.

Interesting seeing this series get an anime, but I knew it was a possibility given how this got a J-Drama, one that rarely I actually got to watch. I've seen like 2-3 at max and this happened to be one of them, and I read the initial chapters early on given this was written by Yuugo Kobayashi, author of Ao Ashi. The concept of implementing mathematics with cooking was always a weird gimmick to me but hey, it was successful enough to get this and the live action drama to happen. Wish the adaptation was a lot more polished than this episode though, felt clunky with how it started and was a bit rushed here and there in the episode, emotional beats and moments like Gaku suddenly joining the staff with cooking the meal for the event felt too out of nowhere for my liking for 'comedic timing'. I didn't mind the start when reading the manga and even the J-Drama, the anime's version feels pretty uninspiring so far. That chairman is still a prick even after all this time.

The premise has me somewhat intrigued. And I'm lowkey a sucker for cooking series. So this has all the ingredients to be a fun watch.

So far, this is the best first episode of the season for me. So many different ways they can go with this.

Math and cooking, yeah i didn't expect any less from Ao Ashi's author, this is already pretty interesting while only scratching the surface, mc is pretty average but Kai reminds me of Senku, some cook degenerate that's obsessed with it, i think this is gonna be fun a ride,

Opening is nice and ending is meh

First surprise of the season for me, didn't expect to like it this much.

I need somebody who can love me at my worst
No, I'm not perfect, but I hope you see my worth
'Cause it's only you, nobody new, I put you first
And for you, girl, I swear I'll do the worst

If you stay forever, let me hold your hand
I can fill those places in your heart no else can
Let me show you love, oh, I don't pretend, yeah
I'll be right here, baby, you know I'll sink or swim

A decent start. The characters aren't very expressive and the pace is quite fast too, but it's okay. Combining math and cooking sounds interesting, although, it's basically true that math is fundamental to ensuring consistency and quality in food preparation.

The principal can just drown in the sea for all I care.

The Chairman was an asshole, but what he did seemed fairly reasonable considering the student that was given a full-ride scholarship to give the school more prestige decided he wouldn't be doing that anymore.

Very eclectic combination of things. I kinda see the vision, but they gotta cook for it to work. Otherwise it's going back into the microwave.

I don't know if I'm supposed to find the main character endearing or not, because in all honesty I feel like he's the biggest door mat I've seen since rent a girlfriend, and until that next season comes out. Maybe its his personality quirk that he's just kind of a weenie or it'll be revealed why in a later episode but right now he just comes off as obnoxious and tedious. I identify with the cooking aspect of the show in so far as the guy enjoys it and is good at it and it gives him a nice zen feeling.

The long white hair guy and his squad of Hisoka's cousin and Diet Danganronpa brought some life into the show but I kind of wish they had actually established some more names or relationships or something before Gaku gets sucked into whatever shenanigans the squad has in store. I dunno maybe its just kind of wild to witness the blinding pace at which the main character gets curb stomped and then just readily and happily gets up again before someone new comes in to take another swing at him; juxtaposed with the way he just kind of hard freezes when some dude is like "yo can you make that ketchup spaghetti for like 5 people instead of 2 without turning into a coma patient?". All of that said it isn't really a boring show which is enough for me to give it another episode before I probably drop it.

It's like watching the anime Ameku Takao no Suiri Karte. The main character can solve the clues with just his genius without giving the audience any explanation. He'll probably explain it at the end of the arc, just like in Ameku Takao no Suiri Karte. Honestly, I don't really like this approach; I'd prefer it to be explained while the main character is going through the process. Of course, that would make the anime unrealistic because he's pressed for time and doesn't have time to explain it, but I think a monologue would suffice without having to explain it through character interactions.

Visually, I like it; the food looks absolutely delicious on screen. Perhaps the only thing I dislike is the main character's odd-looking hair design.

Yes, I had this thought as well and was wondering how many watching this episode held similar views on it. The way he said it in terms of phrasing, tone of voice, etc., was that of a jerk and he obviously is being heavily coded and framed as a villain by the show itself (well, he is a villain or antagonist to the main character), but in reality, his actual actions weren't unreasonable. It's often easy to understand the logic and motives of the supposed villain of any story, but this one is even more understandable and sympathetic in that respect than most.

The kid is given a free ride at the school for performing certain tasks - everyone and their mother knows that even if it's not stated up front explicitly, you're always there under a certain informal agreement and have to act within certain constraints; you can't freely express yourself or pursue or not pursue what you wish and choose to on a whim. That's the double-edged sword of agreeing to attend any institution, especially as part of a funded scholarship program. From the little monologue on the subject that was all we heard on it, he (main character) obviously has a reason to feel strongly about it and there's probably even more to it, a certain logic and reason behind his actions and decision which make perfect sense. But there's no real reason to expect the chairman to care about any of that.

The students are a means to advancement and puffing up the record and credentials of universities, not charity cases.

Boy does this get off on the wrong foot; a shonen protagonist with an inferiority complex who hits rock bottom because of his own actions (for which no acceptable explanation is provided). Luckily everything else I have seen has convinced me that this is worth coming back for more episodes.

I have seen the live action on Netflix it was really good and now I’m excited to watch the anime. Similar to the live action has a good start. If you’re all interested watch how Gaku did the Napolitan exactly. Since I saw the episode on Netflix there’s no other way this pasta dish to make. It tastes exquisite you should try it

This did not seem too interesting. Since I tried to (for about 6 months) study maths at a university + I liked other cooking-themed shounen (Shokugeki no Souma) I wanted to give it a try. Somehow did not check things too closely and I first thought the guy from the pic that looked more "elite" was the maths guy.

Turns out it was the cook. I think I'd have found it more interesting if the cook was kind of a more normal outgoing guy - working in a restaurant of his family + the main from an elite school looking elite (+ being elite and shy) and then somehow getting into cooking.

With this it seems like ... both will just be super good at cooking and the maths guy ... doing stuff + them showing a thermometer and that then being the math (cause there are some numbers for the temperature). Lol. But we'll see. Watching ep. 2 soon.

This does not seem like something where they could prolong it for multiple seasons worth of source stuff. (Like with Shokugeki no Souma.) Might get "old" fast. + them showing the cooking ... was not really much. (Barly anything.) That was that made Shokugkei no Souma great. Here more focus on the other characters.

Painfully average in my opinion because this genre show make you want to eat the food and make you hungry, but the tell how good it is without showing. "Show Don't Tell" is a big thing when you make any sort of entertainment and this show just explains everything the food is without showing the details. 4/10 so far.

I honestly adore watching cooking shows so I’m looking forward to watching this anime in particular! It reminds me a bit of Food Wars, but the plot is entirely different.

I'm already obsessed with Kai, he’s odd but extremely perceptive. Gaku, on the other hand, seems to have a lot of potential which even Kai took notice of.

Also L Principal. Dude seriously doesn't care about the well being of his student.
