I started watching anime in 2021, but only went into mainstream anime in 2023. Prior to that, I managed a personal Top 40 chart since 2013, tracking Western Animation (ie Cartoons).

As of March 2024, I have tried some mainstream anime, and I'm looking forward to building up my anime catalogue. Over the past three years (2021-2023), the number of anime entries in my personal chart has increased noticeably, to become the majority of new charting shows in the 2020s decade to date.


My Personal Ranking System are as follows:

Scoring Criterias for Anime

The criterias in general is based on three factors:

Individual Episode Quality - How does each episode fare as a standalone?
Episode Cohesiveness - How the plot flows? Are the filler episodes well-incorporated?
How much do I like the show? - There's no reason for me to give a good score (8, 9 or a 10) to a show that I personally don't feel like it deserves it, despite it being critically acclaimed



Scoring to MAL Ranking Conversion

I use my own ranking methodology as follows:

Note that there is a bellcurve in place to limit the number of S Tier Shows

S - Superior: The show meets the requirements to score an A+ and it is the best anime that I've seen of at least one of the genres it is classified in
A+ (10/10) - Impressive: The show surpassed all my expectations and is near perfect in concept and execution, there might be some minor flaws here and there, overall, it is done to near perfection and it is something that I definitely will want to re-watch
A (9/10) - Outstanding: The show is something I enjoyed and will want to watch the whole show again in the future, there might be some flaws in the plot but they can be overlooked given the quality of the show as a whole
B+ (8/10) - Excellent: The show is enjoyable and there are standout arcs/episodes of it that I like and want to re-watch in the future, there might be some arcs/episode parts that I didn't really like, but as a whole, the show did well enough to be enjoyable
B (7/10) - Good: The show is enjoyable as a whole, there might be some aspects that I didn’t like but the show is executed well enough to overlook these issues
C+ (6/10) - Decent: There are some aspects of the show as a whole that I didn’t like that I can't overlook, but overall, the show is watchable
C (5/10) - Passable: The show did just enough in terms of plot and character development to pass
D+ (4/10) - Halfway Decent: Plot have potential but isn’t executed sufficiently enough for a pass
D (3/10) - Horrendous: Plot have potential but have annoying characters that ruined the show OR the plot feels incomprehensible in concept and/or execution
D- (2/10) - Appalling: Plot feels incomprehensible and have annoying characters
F (1/10) - Disgusting: The show made me uncomfortable while watching, this can be anything ranging from uncomfortable topics to gross scenes


Notes on Ranking - Personal Opinions

Sometimes, a simple show with a basic plot can outperform a show with a complex plot, there is a minimum requirement for me to enjoy the show to an extent to obtain a B Grade

To obtain a passing grade, the show needs to be at the bare minimum watchable, a badly executed plot doesn't necessarily equate to "unwatchable" i.e. a D grade or lower if there are enough redeemable qualities to push it to C grade or even higher

While the plot execution is the key factor for my ranking, there are tiny details that will impact on the show's final grade as a generic simple plot would likely yield anywhere between a B to C grade, but if the show is able to come up with something that I personally like or relate to, it could be a strong contender for a B+ or A grade
