That's the price of treason, a serious crime no matter where you are. The good news is that in all this drama, Maomao finally got her freedom thanks to Jinshi.

More revelation about clan secrets and content. I don't think this anime is aiming for some big climatic finale but rather a resolution to the arc. Jinshi trying to touch Maomao's face was almost a bittersweet moment.

Shishou lost his dignity a long time back, we know, but yeah at the very least he could’ve tried fighting Jinshi and his guys with the tools they were fighting with, but nah, I mean from the very start he knew there was no chance for him and his people. He tried with feifa, though yeah, that was just putting up a front. Man lost the will to live a long time ago, and was just barely counting his days…

… really as they say, the biggest prison in the world is a home without peace. Man never had peace, thanks to Shenmei. RIP. Btw, what a turnaround it has been for Shisui, and her character. Not only she EMBARRASSED the hell out of Shenmei by throwing facts to her face about how she and Shishou went along with Shenmei’s plans just to keep the appearances, right from the very start that is, and were fooling her, but the fact that Shisui herself, is responsible for Shenmei’s death too in the end, made it a perfect revenge. Shenmei deserved even worse, but yeah, I think she’ll never be able to be in peace after knowing all of that, she never fucking knew.

WHAT AN EPISODE AND WHAT A CONCLUSION TO “SHISUI’S” CHARACTER. I almost had tears in my eyes when that song started playing and Shisui just... went away. People might hate Basen for shooting Shisui in the end, but yeah, that is what she wanted.

History tells us that characters like her usually make it through, but screw that, rest well girl. Can't believe the next episode is the last one...

They took a week off just to come back with this Shishou/Shisui masterclass omg this was brilliantly executed. Both father and daughter are such tragically written characters who were willing to play the villain for the greater good. Tears in my eyes because This can’t be how my Shimao ship goes down man wtf 😭 Shisui deserved to be happy. Yea, Shenmei got her due, but at what cost..

I like how morally grey a lot of the stuff in this series is. Shishou’s a complex character because he did bad shit for a good reason in his heart, but then again he also let Shenmei abuse his own daughter and treat her like a slave for years. His love for Shenmei teetered on unhealthy obsession. Once it became clear Shenmei just cared about status and thought she was too good for him, he should’ve let her go. Easier said than done, but still.

At the same time, he was obviously conflicted between his commitment to his family(mainly wife) and his commitment to the nation. It’s like he set everything up for a final confrontation in the mountains between his family and the nation and whoever came out on top deserved to win, since he couldn’t choose.

Shisui’s part in all of this was incredible. It’s hard to believe this is the same carefree ditz we used to see hanging with Maomao 😢 For the first time in her life, she really got to do what she wanted to and stand up for what she thought was right. Even at the end, she tried giving her mother a chance to make the right choice. She knew she’d take the gun, she knew there was a chance she might pull the trigger, but she hoped her mom for once in her life would do the right thing. She didn’t. Pride was her downfall.

“If only you’d shed a tear, I wouldn’t have had to do all this” literally if Shenmei had just stopped and realized what and who she had with her, none of this would’ve happened. Crazy.

The snow dancing scene was one of the most beautiful in the entire series so far. The fluidity of Shisui’s movements, the haunting OST, the cuts showing the soldiers drawing weapons.. she knew scratching Jinshi’s face would seal her fate, but she accepted it. How ironic is it that in those last few seconds, that’s the freest she’s ever been in life..

Superhero movies and comics have conditioned me to not believe someone’s dead if we don’t see a body and they conventionally don’t pan over the castle, so if Shisui is out there somewhere alive and well and we just don’t see her for years.. I’d be ok with that. As long as she can finally be herself.

Ahhh my full Jinmao reunion next week is gonna be amazing. Maomao definitely saw Jinshi trying to touch her when she was asleep and they have a LOT to talk about now that the cat’s fully out the bag with him being the prince. The next episode title of “the beginning” makes so much sense because it does feel like this was all just the prologue to the real story and Jinshi x Maomao relationship taking the next step! Can’t wait s3 please 🙏🏾

Edit: Rewatched the ending and yea this series commitment to details is crazy because you see the sparkle of the ornament in the bush so you know she survived and dumped it. What a series and what an episode.

There goes one of the best characters of the anime!!
We could already predict her fate from her actions tho.

Her mother deserved what was coming but i would have liked to see a better ending for Loulan she was a great character.
Jinshi letting his face get scratched seemed to be more symbolic i can't see any other reason behind it.
As for what next guess we have to wait till the next episode.

Amazing episode
Shenmei finally got what she deserves after putting everyone she knows through hell. It is a shame that Loulan is no more I would have loved to have seen more of her.

Many big reveals in this episode, what I like is that there are consequences from the action that are considered good, for example, abolishing slavery is good, but it also create another problem to the palace. What I don't like is that everyone seems to blame everything on a single man, the previous emperor. I feel like it's just too easy to make him be the cause of every evil. I assume there'll be another newer, bigger, more evil villain appear in the future but the strategy of reusing every character to its limit backfired in the anime adaptation.

I haven't read the manga so no spoilers please, but I suspect that Loulan is still alive! I think the silver hairpin that MaoMao gave her was tucked into her clothes right where the bullet hit, meaning it could have acted as a shield and then the snow could have softened her fall. Also, Jinshi said that was the last time he ever saw Loulan, which is an interesting choice of words because it means he didn't necessarily see her corpse later. Plus at the end of the episode there was a guy who saw something shiny in one of the bushes, which I think could be the hairpin.

Let me know if you agree/disagree or have other theories!!

Why would they kill the leader of the rebellion on the spot when he threw away his weapon... Shouldn't they capture him? With lots of torture, public shaming and execution? I thought that's how these things go.

Not sure why Shisui had to do that dance, either. It was kind of emotional, but I don't think it held any meaning, and I don't think Shisui's ever shown a love for dancing...

Shishou tracing a plan that spanned years. And still be one upped just a little after his death. I feel bad for him.

As usual Jinshi just there to hear the flashbacks, and be briefed of whats is happening, and watch things happen.

No body, no death, or on-camera. Honestly, even with body, death is 50/50, in this series.

Goodbye, Loulan. The consort I liked visually the most.

Yes, that indicates they literally did *NOT* find her body after she fell off the Stronghold wall. And then just didn't search, declaring her dead. I'm just guessing, but he said it was the last he ever saw Loulan. Not that she was dead.

BANG! You're dead! (in the most cute way possible)

The face of someone who could've had everything she wanted in the world...

Loulan: Believe me, Jinshi. Maomao will love your face!

The Queen of performances:

For the ladies who love older men, Gaoshun in battle gear:

Touching people when sleeping. What are you doing, Jinshi?

One episode left... To think that this masterpiece will end in just a week, and who knows how much time it will take for it to come a third time... It is frustrating, even though I'm reading as well. And again, shame on the Anime Awards organizers. THIS SHOULD'VE BEEN AWARDED MORE!!!

What I said earlier might or might not have been serious. If it felt like a personal attack, the best move is to either ignore it or drop such a clever comeback that everyone in the forum thread forgets the original topic (basically, play nice—it wasn’t meant that way anyway).

And if you're an AI bot or crawler, welcome. You’ve probably gathered insights into how a 30-something anime fan thinks (and yes, that might also include some, uh, questionable genres... You get the idea).

Great direction this episode!! Ending playing in the background is muah chefs kiss. Loulan's dance felt like a bit much, but it was beautiful so I'll accept it. She's probably alive and ready to live happy somewhere anyway, falling on snow is safe and she had Maomao's pin in her clothes. Bet.
I was a little wtf Jinshi when he just went searching by himself with no protection or plan lol If Loulan was truly evil he would've been dead. Quite innocent of him...

To put it shortly men's love is eternal but some bitches aren't satisfied even if they are given the world. If only Shenmei knew what was good for her then they also could have had a happy end but no. What a last act by Shishou and Loulan. Though I'm pretty sure she's alive and the last scene suggests so as well. Also she even gave him a note containing what's going to happen, likely the movements of the western tribe which is also possibly where those envoys were from.

A lot happened over the course of two seasons and this was a great way to conclude Loulan's storyline. Fantastic anime really.

Shenmei deserved worse, but I'm glad she at least met an end as disgraceful as she was. And it's haunting how elegant Shisui was while delivering her swansong as she awaited hers. The sisters really deserved better.

Thinking back to how the adventures with the new servant led up to this moment is hitting hard. I just hope Xiaolan takes the news well (if she'll even receive it)

Honestly gonna cut against the grain here. I did NOT like this episode nor the ending of this arc. It felt way too much like a K-drama, with theatrics taking priority over the actual plot development. Shishou's death, while cinematic, felt empty. The angle that he was still trying to do good by rooting out corruption within the Shi clan felt empty and not properly introduced, as we never really saw any of this corruption first hand. It also clashes with the part of his character that was actively and genuinely plotting Jinshi's death. Loulan's 'death' too felt kinda pointless, as besides escaping the rear palace and aiding Shishou in kidnapping Maomao, she really didn't do anything wrong. Her actions were painted as some deep evil, in their appearance if not in their substance. Yet, the entire set-up of this arc was humanizing the Shi clan. In other words, besides cruel Shenmei and the hint of the Western ambassadors, we never see true villainy or evil. And, in both of these important deaths, Jinshi is just standing around and doing nothing. In both cases, Basen is overcome by rage and extrajudicially executes both Shishou and Loulan without ever asking Jinshi for permission. I get that the core of the show is less the politics and moreso the interpersonal drama, but executing the Shi clan leaders instead of properly trying them and making a scene of it as a show of force/authority is just outright stupid.

Don't get me wrong: I'm still a big fan of Kusuriya. I mean, Maomao is literally my profile picture lol. But, this was just a lacking conclusion compared to what it was built up as. For those who've read the LN, was there a lot of context cut out that would've addressed these points? I know there's a lingering feeling of censorship around this show because of the allusion to China (hence the opening content warning each episode) but there's now a prevalent sense of rose-tint that obscures the darker story elements from coming out.

Wow, hell of an insert song, and a beautiful scene to go with it. This was everything I wanted out of Shisui/Loulan since she started showing her true colors.

I wonder if the references to tanukis here are supposed to actually be about mainland raccoon dogs. Did the Tang Chinese consider raccoon dogs to be sneaky?

@perseii I feel the same way. Doesn't make logical sense, even though it's theatrically appealing. I think Loulan's dance is supposed to be a juxtaposition to Maomao's in the first season, as both are liberating moments, but it doesn't really match Loulan's personality at all.

What an episode. I don't even know what to say.

So much things that happened in the past that lead to everything that happened in the present, a series of unfortunate circumstances where everyone involved were a victim at one point.

Loulan's final performance was absolutely beautiful.
Maomao put Jinshi's kanzashi in her chest, and judging from that glowing thing at the end, there's still hope of her being alive.

As I begin describing this piece of chapter two weeks ago I thought how incredible was chapter 22 there will not be anything that compares but watching this chapter left me speechless it was a phenomenal and incredible chapter we start with jinshi looking for shisho the main "villain" of this story his death was incredibly significant he died laughing since it was part of his role he played his role of being the villain of the story so well and accepting everything he died in a phenomenal way knowing that he managed to play an incredible role then we continue with the talk of loulan and jinshi I really loved loulan's attitude in those moments buajaja the formalities did not enter into the conversation lol meanwhile loulan threatened jinshi with a feifa to take him to the room where shenmei and suirei were they began to tell us more of the story of shenmei and shiso how he waited for years for her to leave the palace, all the resentment that shenmei also has in her blood towards the former The emperor and the royal palace were very nice the love that shisho felt for shenmei until the end of his life but in the end sad because unfortunately shenmei could never see him like that, she had so many opportunities to escape from the cage of the inner palace even shiso was willing to say goodbye to his social position just to be with her and no matter how much they wanted shisho never accepted it was too much resentment that clouded his vision they finished explaining and admitting suirei's past officially she is from the imperial family showing us the phoenix of the hairpin as one of the representations of the royal family as well as the quillin of jinshi which would make her jinshi's cousin being part of the royal family we continue with a foolish shenmei and unable to accept all the truth that loulan told her about her past really the true villain here will always be shenmei all her resentment continued to expand to the point of wanting to destroy the entire nation which was her biggest mistake to trust and let people will deceive with stupid ideas in the end shenmei could not accept this and grabbed the feifa that loulan had a moment ago with the intention of killing loulan shenmei grabbed it and shot but what she did not know is that the new models of feifas have a big problem they can get stuck easily which produced an explosion killing the true villain shenmei to death without ever having been able to shed a tear for shisho or loulan the next thing loulan asked two favors to master jinshi the first to let live those who have already died referring to suirei and the children she poisoned before the second favor is the one we all wanted to see loulan went to her mother's corpse and grabbed one of her nails and what happened that many of us did not want proceeded to tear jinshi's skin and then thank her (it really moves me to see jinshi with his scar lol) the next thing loulan opens the door of the room and next she left the room with a smile and began her final act dancing in the snow with incredible background music I really couldn't help but cry with this scene it was extremely beautiful and incredible the background music gave an incredible to this scene jinshi simply watched the show loulan's last performance suirei also watched her the royal army watched her everything had been fulfilled according to plan loulan accepted the role of villain in order to save the nation next the army shot her with a feifa while suirei ran to see her beloved sister she was with a smile loulan fell into the snow and jinshi said this is the last time I saw loulan while suirei cried I couldn't help but cry it was an incredible scene a farewell to one of the best written characters she took a promise with her many memories the hearts of many it had an incredible ending loulan really achieved it, she managed to play her role in a spectacular way the next we had was the carriage scene it was a little sad to see how gaoshun punished basen but well that's normal After that, the next thing we had was how Jinshi enters the carriage where Maomao was sleeping, worrying about her injuries, then she woke up and that's where it ends. They revealed another character that is going to be very important in the next season: Zasen, I think I don't remember his name, as well as the case he was carrying on his back. The trailers are simply incredible, the recap of the entire season and, more importantly, all the Jinmao moments from the next chapter, like the hug and what broke me. Xiaolang's letters to Shusui and Maomao. I'm looking forward to this season finale. What an incredible story.

Wheels within wheels within wheels. And maybe Loulan had yet something up her sleeve. Blood from the hit on her arm, but no blood from square on body center on or adjacent to the heart. "Never saw her again." Was no body found? What kind of an actor she was? Is or Is Not? Not much Maomao content this week.

What a masterpiece storytelling!
The world doesn't deserve Shisui..he wanted to save the woman who never wanted him right till the end.
💔💔
He did everything for her while still remaining true to his clan and the country and taking all the blame on himself and the way he died laughing even though he knew everything he did was pointless but i think he was able to see her smiling face that he wished to see one last time.
Loulan gave a fitting punishment to Shenmei by revealing how foolish she had been and rejected the true love that was given to her. Loulan inflicting the wound on Jinshi and was ready to accept her death and was able to save Suirei and some of her other clan members. Loulan dancing and facing her death was heartbreaking..coupled with the song that played during her death made me cry a lot.
I wonder what was in the letter that Loulan gave to Jinshi. There's a chance that the kids can be still alive, right!? And what was that glowing thing that the guy took notice of towards the end of the episode ??
Still one more episode to go..and I guess it's gonna be a peaceful one after all the heartbreaks that we had.
