| This episode shows how countless innocent lives are lost because of the greed of a single person — in this case, Shenmei. She is pure evil and doesn’t need any reason to make others suffer. Watching the ending brought tears to my eyes. I felt especially heartbroken for Kyou and his mother. They were just ordinary people, yet Shenmei used Kyou's mother as a tool to satisfy the desires of powerful men. It’s deeply disturbing — I never want to watch an anime where a son or daughter has to witness their own mother in such a state. What hurt the most was seeing Kyou call out to his mother multiple times, while she stood there silently, not responding — as if there was no soul left in her body. She had become nothing more than a puppet under Shenmei’s control. The emotional climax occurs when Kyou-u, recognizing the irreversible damage inflicted upon his mother and himself, chooses to end his life by consuming poison—a decision that is both heartbreaking and a testament to the despair wrought by Shenmei's actions. |

| Honestly, it's time to really write my thoughts on the anime adaptation. This second season is a disappointment based on the adaptation work of the first season. All along, I've tried to ignore the numerous directorial flaws, but when you add them up, it's hard to ignore them. I'm not sure what happened with the staff, but they clearly didn't have the time or the means to adapt such an ambitious arc. Whether in storyboarding or animation, it's just not good enough. Why does episode 16 cut out so many parts to describe the conspiracy in the imperial court that's been building up since the first episode? Why didn't they make it a grander episode? In the light novel, this moment explodes like an atomic bomb, but the anime missed this point. Episode 21, the one we're talking about, is obviously the worst. It gets positive reviews because of the yuri bait (something the anime added, I don't know why tbh), the many reveals and the action. But frankly it was very hard to turn away from all those weirdly drawn faces and messed-up animations (honestly I haven't looked up since the infamous episode 9 of Märchen Mädchen). I'm afraid of the many static shots in subsequent episodes and their usual close-ups of faces (because there's no need to animate) which was a feature I found a lot in the old One Piece adaptation before they changed the staff with Wano arc. But really, this adaptation is a disappointment. I recommend the light novel or manga by Touko Shino. |

Accepting that the same Shisui that were practically sisters to Xiaolan and Maomao is also the person who subjected those kids to the less messed up of two fates is such a painful pill to swallow. Whether it's by Lakan's, Jinshi's or better yet Maomao's own hands, I just hope Shenmei gets what's coming to her.

| Of course Maomao would happily chow down on venomous snakes and insects. As far as she is concerned it's just extra spice XD Loulan going scorched earth was not on my bingo cards. I guess she is trying to spare the children the horror of a clan purge. She has no reason to expect mercy from the Forbidden army. If she survives I expect her plan is to disguise herself as Shisui again and disappear into that role. |

| for some reason, the pacing felt really off in this episode. I think its because they had to fill so much content in so little time, but it kind of felt choppy in that aspect. I've read both manga and haven't had the opportunity to read the light novels. but yeah, thats just something i noticed. |
| Such an amount of gunpowder that Loulan ignited with her torch so causally would have blown the tower to pieces killing everyone in the room and its vicinity. I get that it was all for the dramatic effect but it was kinda nonsensical and broke the previously seamless flow of the events - her throwing silver to the servants (because she is a 'good" girl after all) then without waiting for them to escape she just flings her torch into a metric ton of explosive material. |

| I didn't expect Shisui/Loulan to fully go the Magda Goebbels in the Führerbunker route and poison to death all those children which had been brought there to the stronghold. But I suppose it makes sense. If the stronghold falls which appears imminent, then everyone - not only active combatant and fighting age men, but women and children too, could be killed, as she said. And not only killed, but raped, tortured, or otherwise abused in the case of some of them including especially young women and girls. I say "could" there though because even though that would be more in line with what would be likely to happen historically, it doesn't necessarily mean that it for sure would happen in-universe in the context of this show, since up to now the leading figures on the opposing side haven't been portrayed and characterized as the type of characters who would enthusiastically commit atrocities against mostly innocent, unarmed, and defenseless civilians including children. I'm not saying that it's impossible for it to happen, but if it were Jinshi, Lakan, etc. ordering such things it would be a 180 degree shift in how they've been portrayed thus far and I feel would induce a major tonal shift in the series itself, except to some extent if it was all handled completely offscreen like "107 captives of mixed sexes and ages were later swiftly executed at an imperial army-run site", almost as a footnote just referenced verbally. It just doesn't seem likely that it'd be done any other way if it happened at all considering this series hasn't exactly been Vinland Saga or Berserk as far as showcasing some of the most brutal realities of medieval warfare and politics (in fairness, this is the first real taste of war we've seen on the series apart from brief flashes of soldiers just sitting around rural areas on expeditionary raids) - it seems more to pull its punches in that regard or at least not place the graphic content front and center and just relegate it to being mentioned in passing. But either way, Shisui/Loulan doesn't know that and have any of that out of universe meta context, so again, her actions make sense. Can't say she's necessarily wrong. It's an unpredictable volatile situation. But still surprising in a way to see from a character portrayed mostly positively and as Maomao's friend, since the "Suicide before defeat or death by others' hands!" route, even to the point of imposing it on children and/or any unknowing parties, usually is portrayed as a more villainous action reserved for scoundrels. It'd actually impress and make me respect the series more for just showing it as it is without climbing atop a soapbox over it, but I suppose that depends on Shisui/Loulan's actions in the near future and next episode and how everything goes down. Also, related to that, don't know yet if any of the poisoned children are savable, which I'd imagine would be more plausible to be Kyou-u if any of them since he's the main named character among them we have any connection to or investment in via Maomao rather than nameless background ones. Also, we'll actually see based on how things go next episode and beyond, but after this episode I'm starting to get the feeling that I overestimated Shishou and the rebel faction's capabilities. Because we had been seeing everything internally from their perspective and there was even confirmed foreign involvement with the lookalike women envoys, it seemed their plan and physical position and defenses would be much more robust, but this episode it appears like before even first contact already all the guards are fleeing in disarray (don't know if they're just purely ceremonial and household guards or double as meaningfully trained soldiers too) at the first incitement to do so and already the stronghold complex is rattling at the sounds of explosion and battle, so contrary to what I said before, there is also the potential that what could have looked very formidable from the inside could actually fall comically quickly to the emperor's forces. Since the preview for next week even seemed to hint at a rout with them already being overrun and the inexperienced defensive forces just being cut through like butter in terror. |

Shisui / Loulan really has a troubled past, but she crazy. I think I can save her๐โ๏ธ It really hurt to see Maomao have to force herself to crashout despite it being one of her friends, who had basically killed ppl. Looks like Jinshi is finally taking action with the army, come rescue your woman. Nice set up, real stuff next ep and onwards, hope the drawings are stronger cause the cad was terrible this ep. Whole different feeling to the drawings. 9.5/10 |
