Gotta respect Kyoko, she made a mistake and manned up. Not to say that Godai was innocent, he never should have kept the cabaret from her.

Yagami in the bunny outfit was so attractive.
She really would be #1 if she worked there.
Her eyes are enough to make anyone's heart swoon Too adorable. <3

I was starting to warm to Kyoko, after my affection for her had gone below freezing. She had been showing absolute dedication to the one she loved throughout the cabaret arc; always being supportive and even making Godai lunches. But then Mitaka phoned and, instead of turning down an offer of a night out with him, she could only say "but" before giving in.

There are some things you don't do when you're in love with someone and plan on marrying them, and going out for meals at night with people you know are interested in you - and have been for years - is a no-no. The annoying thing is that Kyoko found out about Godai's new line of work when out on a date with Mitaka... and SHE later told Godai not to keep secrets from her. How can she even have a leg to stand on when she's STILL freely dating Mitaka?

Kyoko still didn't learn her lesson, but it was nice - once again - to see Yagami question why the hell she's dating other men if she's supposed to be in love with Godai. (Also, Yagami saying what she did means Takahashi thought the same thing, as she wrote the script. Intentionally making the heroine contradict herself with her actions towards the two men in her life...)

Moving away from the usual Kyoko bashing, I felt sorry for but, at the same time, was annoyed with Godai's stupidity. The way his 'friends' treated him when he was having a hard time was a bit too much - even for them. But Godai should have faced the music sooner, rather than later, since it was obvious the truth would out.

Not looking forward to the next part of the story, as Mitaka is set to appear frequently again and make Kyoko do her submissive housewife/classy prostitute transformation. I foresee more bitching, in the near future...

Kyoko does have this habit of being roped into things by Mitaka. That's how I saw it - less a "date" than just going along with it for whatever reason. As I might have mentioned elsewhere, this sort of thing just demonstrates her emotional immaturity.

Interestingly, in the manga Yagami doesn't question Kyoko about anything. This is because, to the best of my recollection, she never works at the club at all in the original. I can only imagine the ratings for the TV show were flagging and someone thought putting her in a bunny outfit might reverse the trend.

She may not have worked there in the manga, but she might still have got involved in the cabaret drama by seeing Godai as he worked. I honestly can't remember, and will have to re-read the manga in full, once my memories fade enough again to require bitching about Kyoko in the manga sub-forum, instead.

If it was an anime edit, +1 to the anime editing people for taking the time to highlight Kyoko's random slutty fazes.

"Slutty" is far too harsh a word, man. Hypocritical, yes, but it's not like she ever does anything with Mitaka. That particular instance was another example of Mitaka bulldozing his way through Kyoko's indecisiveness, making plans over the phone before she even has a chance to raise any objections. Though I suppose she feels as though she owes him the courtesy of at least meeting with him.

And nah, Ibuki isn't involved with the cabaret scene at all. I read it yesterday, and even with my collander memory that's recent enough for me to be sure about it :D

Earlier on, she went to Mitaka's apartment, after he asked her to - knowing full well what it meant to enter a man's place, alone. Her hesitation at the door was enough to indicate that she didn't have the confidence required to stop anything happening, and had Mitaka not passed out because of the dog/Godai entering, he would've had his way with her, going on how she seemed to have no willpower when confronted with him.

Her inaction throughout, and Mitaka's forcefulness making Kyoko become weak-kneed, makes me think he could have slept with her at any time, if he only acted with a little aggression.

She probably trusted Mitaka not to force himself on her. He is, after all, a gentleman (abeit one who tends to employ sneaky tactics to get what he wants). I dunno. I have faith in her whereas you want to believe she's a whore :-(

But there were a couple of times where she came close to doing the deed with Godai. Back in the first or second volume, when he drunkenly carried her upstairs and she apologized to her husband in resignation. And later at the hot spring resort when a phone call from Ikkoku interruped the "moment" they were about to have. Had Godai acted with more conviction, he could have had his way with her long ago - but then we wouldn't have been treated to 15 volumes of misunderstandings and drama.

I was going to mention the drunken Godai incident in my previous post.

At that stage in the story, Kyoko wasn't in love with Godai. She liked him, and I'm pretty sure they'd already had a few moments by that stage (already, I've forgotten... woe is me), but she was still thinking of Soichiro. Going on Kyoko's comment in the manga about not knowing when she fell in love with Godai, I think it's safe to say it wasn't love at first sight - I always got the impression he unintentionally pressed her maternal buttons by being such an idiot and, as a result, pity eventually turned into love. (Think of Tatsuya in Touch.)

...I'm starting to go off on a tangent here. The point I'm getting around to making is that, with a bit of forcefulness, Kyoko was - even at that early stage - willing to have sex. Maybe because Godai lacked Mitaka's confidence and experience, that was the one occasion where it was shown that, had he been more aggressive, he wouldn't have had much trouble sleeping with her; the same as Mitaka. She probably would've hated his guts afterward since he'd have used her body without winning her heart first, or caring about her feelings, but the point remains that she never seemed difficult to get into bed with; in spite of her jealous outbursts suggesting she'd wear the trousers in her marriage.

I'm honestly not sure how much to blame on Kyoko - viewed as a person - and Takahashi extending the Mitaka drama to such a point that her still dating him seemed like she was cheating on Godai. The larger part of me believes that Takahashi damaged Kyoko's characterization by preventing her doing what she should have done near the start and told Mitaka she didn't like him in that way. But without added drama, and a male love rival, a romance isn't as entertaining. The biggest mistake Takahashi made was probably making it crystal clear whom had Kyoko's affections, from near the start.

Edit: I can't decide if it's fair to describe Kyoko's actions towards Mitaka as that of a whore, high class prostitute, or any other nice term you can think of, even now. I love the half of her personality she shows around Godai but will always HATE the way she toyed with Mitaka with her submissive housewife routine; unwittingly or not.

Edit 2: The lead of Genji Monogatari would love Kyoko. He wouldn't even need to use his impossible to fail seduction line on her.

You have a point when you say that it shouldn’t have been made so clear who Kyoko favoured so early. Continuing to keep Mitaka’s hopes alive when it was obvious to everyone that she wasn’t going to choose him didn’t reflect well on her.

Having said that, she was still considering the possibility of marrying Mitaka until fairly late in the story. Godai was always going to be the first choice if everything worked out, because he’s the one she really loved, but it wasn’t as if she’d made up her mind at the start.

But it’s this complexity and fallibility that makes me love Kyoko. Personally I wouldn’t feel strongly about her without those personality flaws - she’d just be a human Belldandy.

Also, you’re totally right about Godai triggering her maternal instincts. During flashbacks Soichiro is portrayed as a bumbling idiot who isn‘t particularly smart, good looking, or charismatic. Kyoko needed a husband she could take care of, a husband who really needed her, and that’s why she chose the clumsy, hard-working one over the smooth, successful one.

Adachi deals with the subject of pity/mothering leading to love, and women needing to see weakness in their men for them to feel needed, in most of his works. In H2, Hikari (the H2 equivalent of Minami) felt distanced from her partner because he never showed any signs of weakness, and the end of story drama was set around the lead needing to give her other half a total defeat for Hikari to be happy.

You should compare Minami against Kyoko, as you progress through Touch, to further understand why - after not long since finishing that - having to endure Kyoko's antics irked me. Minami had a lot more reason to marry Kazuya than Kyoko ever had to marry Mitaka (Kazuya looked identical to her love, was the successful version, and shared more interests with her) but she never went against her own feelings, which lead her into the arms of Tatsuya. You've already commented to me about Minami being far from a Belldandy-esque doormat, so you're well aware she was devoted to her love without being fake.

Kyoko only seriously considered marrying Mitaka to get revenge on Godai for not coming home on that fateful evening. Because of being a child, emotionally, she reacted by being willing to say yes to Mitaka, purely out of spitefulness. Aside from that, she only ever stalled for time.

And, again, I feel the need to point out to your less enlightened self how it's wrong to love one man but keep another around because he has money. You either love someone or you don't, and she never loved Mitaka.

Going to watch the other MI bits and pieces now. Goodbye.

After coming all this way, I'm finally this close to dropping the series... maybe Godai is an M and he can tolerate those fuckers screwing with him, but I can't... unless the tenants get their dues soon I'm going to be very disappointed... and yeah, thats an understatement.

I wish Kyoko weren't so submissive. It seems like both Godai and Kyoko have problems when it comes to denying people that are interested in them. (Godai often seemed to get weak knees when dealing with Yagami or... that other girl from way back who liked him. And Kyoko can never turn down Mitaka even though she's obviously no longer interested in him like that.)

100% agree. Sorry, but did Takahashi think it was amusing to have a bunch of obnoxious side characters (especially Yotsuya and Ichinose) treating the main as a door mat? Continuously? It just makes me annoyed when watching... but I have a feeling nothing is going to change before the series is over, of course.

Yea, but wasn't Godai 'supposedly' dating Kouzue a while back. Even though he still loved the manager. It's not all on Kyoko. Anyway I'm not saying she was right. I was pretty pissed when she said yes to go on the date with Mitaka. I was also supporting Ibuki she was right to tell Kyoko to get a clue. She likes Godai so stop screwing around with Mitaka.

Very good ending of episode.
I was somewhat afraid what would be Kyoko's reactions (she went out with Mikata that's always bad sign) but she came trough awesomely thus ending had awesome feeling in it, i was relieved.

Those three bozos and his "friend" were to blame for most of it, without them Godai would just payed off everything and said bye bye to Cabaret. At least that wide bozo time to time speak with Kyoko as if trying to help Godai.
Godai is mess, he lets everyone to use him far too much, it's painful to watch.

What happened to "don't worry, if those bozos come back I'll straighten them out!"??
Godai always lets himself get screwed over, it's very annoying to watch.
I'm glad things at least kinda worked out towards the end of the ep.
Yagami was very admirable as always, glad she stepped in, she shows so much dedication! And yeah, she was the cutest of the bunch in her bunny outfit. =)

All the blackmailing, bullying and Kyoko being mad could have been avoid if Godia man up and told the truth...
And the tenants are easily the worst part of this show.

Goddamn, these characters piss me off. Godai is still a pathetic ballless pushover, the tenants continue to be as sociopathic as always, but Kyoko is the one that infuriates me the most. Why in the fuck is she still whoring around with Mitaka even after she has finally admitted to herself that she loves Godai AND decided to marry him? And just when I was starting to warm up to her again.

Since mostly every comment is about how both main characters screwed up, I'm just going to say that I'm glad it all worked out in the end. Kyoko didn't stay mad at Godai for long and tells him not to bear everything by himself. I also loved the bento design she made for Godai ( wish I could do that!).

I'm going to disagree with most of the comments above and say Yuck Fagami. The way she follows Godai everywhere as a stalker is creepy. The way she imposes on him every time is annoying.
It feels the same with Kyoko's date as Mitaka just imposes on her. And that's why to me, the Kyoko-Godai relationship is the healthiest since they don't have to basically jump in front of their loved one to remind them of their existence.

Sooo it's episode 80 and not even a trace of some more mature romance. I know that 16 episodes can cover quite of story, but I think that from this 80 episodes we can cut like 50% and still get whole story.

Thank god I'm not the only one thinking this. I've seen a lot of people call Kyoko things just because she doesn't say a 'no' to Mitaka, when she already said that even if it's not directly. At the end of episode 76, Mitaka acknowledges that she doesn't love him and that he learned, thanks to the marriage with Asuna, that he has to pursue her even if she doesn't love him. But of course Kyoko it's the one at fault. It's annoying and tiresome.

As for Yagami, she's only a kid and needs to mature, but yeah she's creepy most of the time.

Kyoko going on a date with Mitaka is pretty infuriating, as other people have said. I'm glad Yagami pointed out how messed up it is. Further confirms she's the best girl.

Wouldn't mind if Godai ended up with her. I can only hope she gets a happy ending.

This is what I was thinking. This anime is a good watch, but it drags on way too long. It could easily be half the length. This is my first Takahashi story, and definitely my last. Maison Ikkoku is one of her shorter manga, so I can't imagine how bad it must drag in manga/anime like Urusei Yatsura and Ranma.

Well at least you gotta hand it to Yagami that girl is dedicated and would go through all lengths for Godai. Same for Kyoko with her constant support. The date with Mitaka obviously caused aversion towards the latter, but believe me, people make seemingly odd decisions despite having genuine feelings.

God I hate this show so damn much. Less melodrama, less stupid misunderstandings, but abhorrent characterization? Finally a pertinent episode to reasonably drop this series. Honestly it would've been a perfect drop if they actually agreed on Yagami being a cabaret servant, but I guess this is good enough.

Hell everyone is at fault in this episode except for Kyoko (ultra-surprisingly). You can hate the tenants however you want, they drag Godai through hell as though he is an object of lower than slave. So far, they truly are just there for no other reason than bringing us great joy of abusive humor, truly grateful I am.

But I must admit the worst is still the ultimate beta cuck Godai. Will he ever change? Too late though, coz he's already an incredibly unlikable character.

its been a while since ive felt this much disdain towards fictional characters, I never truly hated a lot of characters in this show before a few episodes ago, but in the past 3-4 episodes, its become painfully clear that the only ones that really care at all for godais well being are kyoko and yagami (and maybe a side character here and there), but he is surrounded by so many fucking toxic people, I truly hope by the end a lot of these horrible mother fuckers will be cut from his life, fuck the other tenants and fuck sakamoto, theyre all a bunch of selfish tools, and im getting absolutely sick of seeing them hurt godai so much, he is such a hard worker, its really painful to keep watching him get put down like this episode after episode. though in part, its completely godais own fault, hes being such a dumbass by continuing the lies, he has a good and valid reason for what he has been doing, idk why he is being such a dumbass other than prolonging the show and adding unnecessary drama to the mix. I also get where kyoko is coming from with her annoyance, its fucked that he keeps lying to her like this and that she was kept in the dark. the whole thing is fuckin rough man...

@MyLonesomeCowboy 100% I think most of what they've been doing throughout the series is to push Godai to man up and also push Kyoko to get over her feelings of Soichiro and come to terms with her feelings for Godai. They're not evil like many seem to think. Every "bad" thing they've done could have easily been avoided with modifications to Godai's behaviour or choices.

Now this was a sweet one, it seemed like it might get dramatic when Kyoko witnessed Godai and the tenants at the cabaret, as well as her initial reaction to Godai confronting her about it, but once it was all out in the open, it turned out very nice in the end, it doesn’t matter if Godai is working at the preschool or the cabaret, our boy gets to eat his boxed lunch from Kyoko. But what Kyoko said about wishing Godai would explain things simply to her, that is basically asking the impossible in a show like this lol, if everyone was honest then there would be no drama, but hopefully Godai learned to not keep things from Kyoko this time around.

And although it was short lived, we did get Yagami in a bunny girl outfit so I’m happy, the coworker fella shut it down very quickly when he found out how old she was lol. And speaking of Yagami, I liked her moment with Kyoko a lot, she seemed like a true love rival there despite her constant setbacks, I do kinda feel for her here too because this time she truly couldn’t help Godai, but at the same time she doesn’t need to stick her nose in every situation so I don’t feel for her that hard lol. And although Godai is still at the cabaret for now, I’m guessing this marks the end of the arc concerning it since Kyoko knows the truth, not my favorite arc of the show so far but I think the ending of it was very satisfying.
