Well I doubt it, since China is so censorship happy and almost always has the most generic writing ever. Exceptions include Link Click and Scissors Seven, yes, but those seems more like outliners. If the only thing they can boast is a handful of great looking animation out of every few hundred entries or so, then it says a lot about the possibility of them taking over (or lack thereof). It’s not 0%, tbf, but it’s not great odds, either.

Nope it will. just watch. some of the best animators in anime these days come from china.

The trailer looks flashy. I've only seen clips of Chinese animation, but I have no doubt that China already has the technical skills and the capital to make super-polished anime.

The content is the issue, I think. This trailer too doesn't look particularly interesting or original to me. I see hints of Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Dorohedoro and Jujutsu Kaisen... Is this just "everything cool: the anime"?

Also, I'm still not ready to embrace Chinese culture and style. Chinese media still comes across as awkward and foreign to me, compared to how I feel about Japanese culture. I feel they'll have to make something truly extraordinary to break into non-Chinese pop culture. Like Genshin Impact, for example.

Yea thanks for providing "proof" via baseless statements from boomers that don't disprove any of the counter points made in this thread lol.

If you were talking about gaming, though, then you'd be onto something.

No. No country that it is normal to poop in public and has turkish toilets will ever surpass Japan in anything.

I don't think approaching anything with a nationalist inferiority complex helps anyone's cause, just saying.
I love donghua, especially the garbage ones (which are about 99% of the total); but it's silly to judge a whole industry based only on the animations of a handful of shows. In fact the donghua I dislike are specifically the ones with the best animations because they feel like a knockoff with no distinct identity.

Also, not everything needs to be a competition, but if you do want competition then maybe compete to have better work standards for the creators and the animators than japan. Love yourself more, bro

I've been ready, but foreigners today better understand the appeal of China than the CCP dynasty does.

Is there donghua from the 70s, 80s, and 90s you can recommend? If not the answer’s clear to me.

Donghua are mostly have godtier animation with generic plot.
@Mackyreels

I always felt the animation quality was the worst aspect. They often look like PS2 era CGI cutscenes from video games.

Or others, like Boonie Bears and GG Bond, look like an early 2000s CGI direct to DVD movie.

It is weird as when I studied in China I met so many talented illustrators said they wanted to get into animation.

Unless an engaging story is created, Chinese anime has yet to surpass Japanese ...... I think. I also think that China has stricter restrictions on story content than Japan. So I don't think it is possible to create a free story.

As I recall, China had some restrictions on viewing anime, even the Demon Slayer anime, due to regulations specific to the Chinese market, right?

That trailer looks great! I've been meaning to check out some of the Chinese anthologies for a while. There have been a number of promising works form China coming out in recent years (and they've produced good animation for a very long time - https://myanimelist.net/anime/producer/471/Shanghai_Animation_Film_Studio). However, just like anime, among the highlights are a lot of things which just don't look appealing.

There is... one Donghua in MAL's top 50. I don't think that change is coming anytime soon, if it's coming at all.

Also I've yet to see anything from the Chinese media scene that makes me feel the emotions that a number of anime have made me feel. It's well-made, but the bombastic, overcreated emotions, ideals, and motivations just aren't there, it feels like, to me. Everyone seems so... restrained. The appearance of animation isn't the only thing people like about an anime.

Donghua is on the rise and causing quite the stir among fans like this OP, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. anime has been ruling the animation kingdom for decades with an iron (and often sparkly) fist. It's got a massive, global fanbase that Donghua is just beginning to tap into.

Donghua is like that up-and-coming diva who's starting to steal the spotlight at the grand ball. But surpassing anime? That's a tall order. Anime's crown isn't slipping off its head just yet or ever.

For every donghua with this quality animation there are a hundred with garbage animation, same with anime imo. Unless the standard trends upward for one and not the other I doubt that's gonna happen
@SawronZXZ Donghua is probably the most Cherrypicked medium that i have ever seen in my entire life since almost 95% of them aren't any better or even worse than seasonal anime nowadays. It is probably why they only recommend the same 4-5 series over and over again

1. OP has a shit taste in Chinese
2. Fuck the Chinese for butchering Ravages of Time with their "cutting edge CGI"
3. 95% of Donghua, Manhua and Webnovel nowadays are straight up bad (and i'm saying this as a guy who grew up with Chinese films, Hongkong Comics and Chinese TV drama)
4. Did I say OP has a shit taste in Chinese?

Tho it has 33 entries from 16 franchises in MAL's top 50 ONA - https://myanimelist.net/topanime.php?type=ona
One of those is Zhan Shen: Fanchen Shenyu (Slay The Gods) which is quite new and relatively short (only 15 episodes), thus didn't have the time to accumulate a "cult following" like Mo Dao Zu Shi or Wu Liuqi for example.

Hard to say, China is in a rock and a hard place, the world needs the country but the world also doesn't need China making knock offs of everything. Regardless, the real issue is that the communist party doesn't want LGBQT stuff over there, there is a reason stuff like Boys Love can't work over there, especially things like NANA. There was a webcomic over there I was reading but it was paused due to the author getting pursued by the authorities for 6 months all because of a bisexual couple in their web comic. Unless China gets its act together and stop doing 95% Wuxia style anime or references to them; I don't see this happening.

A majority of the anime from there has highlights e.g. Fog Hill of the Five Elements. as shown from here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIzGwQS8PDc

My thoughts? China seems very focused in CGI more than any other country, unlike Japan which has always had mixed results from
bad to mid to below mid to okay to well it doesn't ruin the 2d but could be better
clause. People just don't want to admit this fact that CGI has always been never consistent, meanwhile China seems do be doing ok with it but the cutscenes in Chinese are too fast so you tend to have to rewind alot more -- and this is the one problem I have which maybe could have it compete with Anime.

But we'll see, give it a couple more years. ^^
